Beautiful sunny day I walked into The Waffle Bus with my chest pounding like Casey stepping up to the plate full of hope, confidence, and dreams of a flavor grand slam. The smell of waffles and fried chicken filled the air, and I felt the eyes of the crowd my taste buds watching, waiting for victory.
I ordered with confidence, like Casey up to bat just knowing he was about to win the game. I knew the Chicken Thunder Fries spicy mayo, ancho chile honey butter chicken biters, and fries would be my home run for the night. The first bite came, and immediately STRIKE ONE!!! Not enough chicken. The fries were covered in spicy mayo and ancho chile honey, but they couldn't carry the game alone.
'BOOOO !' I could hear my brain yelling in full disbelief. I took a breath, trying to stay calm after all, I still had my side of mac and cheese. This was the comeback moment, the swing that changes everything. I dug in, hoping to shift the momentum STRIKE TWO!!! The Mac It arrived warm, not hot a lukewarm reminder that not every hero hits a home run on command.
'BOOOOO' throw it away let's go somewhere else" my brain went again, sweat coming down. But I wasn't ready to give up. Just like Casey with two strikes, I shut my brain down and thought, let's mix it all together. The Waffle Bus would step up and hit a home run like it used to, back when it was just a food truck and I'd drive around on Saturdays looking for it.
I took a bite, waiting for redemption. The sauces teased with potential, the honey butter hinted at glory, but the magic never landed. A mouthful of fries, Mac and chicken was a swing and a miss. My stomach was ready to cheer, but my taste buds just shook their heads in disappointment.
By the end, the scoreboard in my mind was clear: there will be no joy in Houston today The Waffle Bus had struck out, and so had my smile. I walked out into the rain, head down, wiping away a tear yes, it was raining, lol it wasn't when I got there. The drops matched the letdown of a meal that had promised so much and delivered so little. Some days, even Casey can't save the game and today, neither could The Waffle Bus. My once-favorite chicken shop has fallen.
