The 18 Best Restaurants In Deptford - London - The Infatuation

"If you need a slick, stylish spot that’s as good for impressing mates and dates as it is making you feel like the kind of person who orders venison loin on the reg, The Watergate is it. While the pretty European-leaning dishes add to the scene, they aren’t the reason you come here. On any given night, the moodily lit bar and small plates spot in Deptford is filled with people who want to look cool and drink grown-up cocktails. There are the “we aren’t like normal parents, we’re cool parents” types discussing Pantone paint shades over moreish salt cod croquettes. Over by the exposed brickwork, under dangly orb lights, there’s probably a date playing out. Eyes are locked over an oozing, crispy hen’s egg and chicory salad which is picked at in a way that hopefully conveys ‘stable, datable, no priors’. " - Rianne Shlebak, Jake Oliver, Sinead Cranna, Daisy Meager

The Best Restaurants in Deptford, South East London | Eater London

"The third Deptford venue from Gordon McGowan, who also owns Buster Mantis and Stockton, The Watergate opened in March 2020, just before the first national lockdown. On Watergate Street, towards the Greenwich end of the High Street, The Watergate occupies an intimate space and focuses on natural wines, cocktails and a small plates. As for the food, the menu isn’t too dissimilar to that served at Stockton but, broadly, the dishes are slightly lighter. Think Cornish crab croquettes dusted with flaky sea salt, courgette flower stuffed with goat’s cheese and drizzled with truffle honey, or wild seabass with batons of pickled daikon and cucumber." - Jonathan Hatchman

Second time being there and the restaurant never disappoints! Drinks and food were good — I did try the rabbit, wasn’t expecting the fried texture but the inside was delicious. I was hoping for a birthday dessert since I mentioned in the booking that we were celebrating my girlfriend’s birthday, but overall I’ll definitely go there again!

All-time favourite place for brunch. Good value and good atmosphere. I particularly like the egg royal and the chicken waffle. The chicken is waffle is crispy and a good mix of the home-made sauce.

This was such a brilliant find! We went there for an early pre-theatre dinner after just stumbling upon it while walking in the area and what an amazing find it was! Every single dish was excellent! I absolutely love small sharing plates but as anyone who does knows you'll rarely like everything you try. Not in this case! Absolutely everything we had was fantastic, some even mind-blowing like the burrata and grapefruit salad and the zucchini flower! Don't miss out on the cocktails either as they are also delicious! Can't wait to go back and try all the other dishes we didn't try this time.

Had a lovely brunch here. First of all, the best spicy Bloody Mary I have had in London. We tried the chicken and waffles which I must also say is one of the best we’ve had in the U.S. or the U.K. (we are chicken and waffles fans, are American and have lived in many areas in the states that make amazing chicken and waffles). The chicken was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and it came with a really delicious sriracha hollandaise and what I think was a lemon curd. Just a fabulous combination with the waffle. We also tried the cornbread french toast. As much as I love cornbread, I had never considered making it into a French toast, but this was amazing. It was a nice, moist cornbread that had herbs and corn kernels— I would have enjoyed it alone, but made into French toast and topped with syrup and bacon, it was out of this world. We also tried the rarebit croque monsier which was deliciously cheesy. And finally the baked eggs with merguez sausage. The sausage was so flavorful and the ragout was well seasoned and fully of delicious veggies— squash, chickpeas and bell peppers. Just lots of lovely touches like a germolata and Greek yogurt for a well balanced and satisfying dish. Can’t wait to return to try more options. Service was great- very welcoming staff. Cute and cosy space.

Booked an anniversary brunch here and unfortunately it was a let-down. We’d reserved a window table but when we arrived it had been given away and we were tucked near the toilets instead. Before we’d even sat down we were asked what we wanted to drink, then after our coffees arrived we were asked three times in the space of five minutes if we were ready to order. When the food finally did arrive (after a longer wait than it should have been), it was cold. To top it off, when we paid and thanked the staff on our way out, we were ignored completely. It’s a shame because the décor is lovely and the place has potential, but overall the experience was disappointing — not somewhere we’ll be returning to.

Cute place with a variety of sharing dishes. Also quite small and cozy. The food and cocktails were really tasty (we had the mussels, the cod ratatouille, aioli fries and a few other items). A good place for a date or social occasion. I'd probably visit again.

A great place for dinner or drinks and nibbles. They are open until midnight. We visited for dinner and ordered a range of dishes, cocktails and wine. The croquettes were especially good, the padron peppers were the spiciest we’ve had in U.K. (they said it was a spicy batch), the scallops with onion bhaji and cauliflower puree was delicious, and we loved the chunky chips. All the dishes were good. The place was busy even around 9-10pm for dinner and booking is necessary. The only suggestion I have for this restaurant is to invest in an additional toilet, which appears to be needed for the amount of customers. We were sat at the table just outside the loo and couldn’t help noticing it seems to be the only one for both customers and staff. All evening there was a constant stream of people using it and more often than not people wanting to use it but it being occupied.l
