"As Hubei natives, the owner and head chef do not budge on what qualifies as true Hubei cuisine. They ship most ingredients from their home province; those they can't, they make themselves – sauces and pickles are as authentic as can be. The menu is season-driven, but classics like river fish, spicy fish maw and offal, or grilled-steamed pork coated in coarse rice flour are ever present. Go for spicy or mild when pre-ordering the famous lamb and fish stew." - Michelin Inspector

The staff were a highlight - while English wasn't widely spoken, everyone was more than happy to find a way to help me. As soon as my cab pulled up, somebody rushed over to help with my luggage and to see me through to the front desk. Check-in process was friendly and concise with all the details I needed, and I was walked to my room with some recommendations for restaurants from friendly staff. Thank you especially to Eric Wang who went above and beyond to make me feel welcome with a crisp apple and a wish for good luck! The rooms were a bit tired but well-appointed and exceptionally clean, and the turn-down service was lovely. Room service menu was pretty limited - I walked across the road to a mall with a few food outlets when in a pinch, but plenty of other options a bit further away. A very pleasant walk along the river nearby. Breakfast had a big range of options for eastern and western tastes.

This is a beautiful hotel in an excellent location with impeccable service. The details in even the smallest things were very much appreciated. The buffet breakfast was outstanding with a variety of Western and Eastern dishes. I highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again!

Nice hotel, good location, easy to get there from airport, very professional staff, big and clean room, very good breakfast. WiFi working fine, just in front is subway station in case of need. Only thing to improve is room furniture which is a bit old .

My oh my, what has happened here? Before Covid, I have been a very regular guest at the Westin Chaoyang, probably stayed there more than 500 nights over the years. Back tonight for my first China trip after Covid. A lot of changes… 1. The check-in staff barely spoke any English. The whole check-in procedure lasted about 45 minutes. Even though they must have had me on record, it took a bit of discussion to convince her to accept my Bonvoy lifetime Platinum status. Access to the executive lounge was granted after some more haggling. That was a very different experience from a few years ago… 2. At 8:30pm, all food outlets in the hotel were closed. We needed to search for a restaurant in the vicinity, which was no problem. 3. Back in the hotel: Since the formerly quite properly stocked minibar now only contains a few soft drinks, I tried to open the room service menu via the QR code provided. Didn’t work, no response from the hotel server.. I called ‚At your Service‘, and after some transfers of my call I had someone on the line who understood me - language wise. Tried to order a bottle of red wine, instead a waiter with a paper menu was sent to my room. He doesn’t speak any English. I showed him the number of the wine I wanted - Marques de Riscal. He was back a few minutes later with a Malbec. I showed him the wine and the corresponding number in the Chinese part of the paper menu. He said alright, disappeared, and a few minutes later he was back. This time no wine but a fruit basket. He apologised via his phone translator and told me that the Riscal was not available. I then settled for the Malbec which then delivered.. One hour of back and forth. Not worthy of a Marriott Group 5-star hotel in Asia. Reminded me of my first rounds in China in the late 80‘s. Welcome to the new old world… The room: large (I was upgraded due to my Bonvoy Platinum status). Same design without any change since opening in 2008. Corridor outside was a biy smelly. Cigarette smoke and alcohol. Seemed to be a 'party floor'. There were droppings of cigarette ash in the toilet compartment which didn't disappear after the room cleaning on day 2. A bit yuckie. Definitely not 5 star standard, even in China. What a shame..

This was my first time visiting China. The Westin provided top notch, luxurious comfort and service - both of which added to my overcoming jet lag and getting on with the purpose of my visit. I would rush to return to this hotel of highest quality.
