Classic Boston tavern serving cocktails, oysters, burgers & more

"You have two bars to choose from at The Westland near Symphony Hall. We like the more casual bar in the front as opposed to the one in the back, which is a little clubby and seems like the type of place where people complain about the entitled millennial in their office who didn’t laugh at that hilarious Obama joke. But at either spot, you can get a juicy, sloppy burger that’s pretty much exactly what you want out of a meat sandwich at a pub." - dan secatore
"The Westland is one of the closest sit-down restaurants to campus. As a result, if you come here for brunch it’ll seem to be filled entirely with Northeastern students double-fisting cups of coffee in an attempt to hide their hangovers from their visiting parents. But you should keep this American gastropub type place in mind for just about any occasion. It has one of the best burgers in the neighborhood, and the front bar area that’s separate from the rest of the restaurant is a great place to have a few early-in-the-evening cocktails." - dan secatore

"A prime spot for post-convention drinks, the Westland is located right by Symphony Hall; maybe you can find time for a musical performance in the midst of your conference obligations? Sit at either the front or back bar and order a bourbon cocktail, or sample some local craft beer. The Westland also has a full food menu, including a filling burger that is proving to be an early favorite at the fairly new restaurant. [Full service]" - Dana Hatic

"After a long wait, the Westland — Douglas Bacon’s long-anticipated Symphony-area, 124-seat brasserie-style restaurant that he bought in 2012 — has finally opened. Bacon told Eater that the bar is currently open each night from 4 p.m. until 2 a.m. and the kitchen runs from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m., with a late-night menu promised “in the very near future,” and plans for daily lunch service and a weekend brunch service possibly starting within the next month. The menu is billed as “international comfort food,” with examples including oysters, grilled pizzas, a rotating crudo, and more; Matt Drummond is the Red Paint group’s culinary director and Danielle Dorcil is the Westland’s executive chef. Bacon said, “I’ve got a very good feeling about this restaurant,” and that he’s very happy with the team and how the space looks; the opening comes after delays caused by issues with one of his Allston properties (Shanghai Social Club, now Hopewell) and related licensing-board appearances because the liquor license had already been secured." - Terrence Doyle
