Craft Beer Bar the Whale Anchors New Charleston Development the Refinery | Eater Carolinas

"A craft-beer bar that opened as the first retail tenant in Charleston’s new mixed-use development, The Refinery. It offers a wide selection of beers from around the world for on-site consumption or to take home, and its name references the beer‑world term for a hard-to-find brew—likened to Ahab hunting a whale in Moby-Dick. Founded by Jesse Van Note and Andrew Ross, who met while working at a brewery in Asheville, the owners launched their first location in Asheville in 2017, expanded to Greenville, South Carolina in 2019, and opened this Charleston outpost with an official opening on September 28. The space will host food trucks and expects other bars or restaurants to join the Refinery, currently operating in an early “build-it-and-they-will-come” phase. Hours are Monday–Thursday 2 p.m.–midnight, Friday–Saturday noon–midnight, and Sunday noon–10 p.m." - Erin Perkins

If you love beer, then you should be here. This is a craft beer bar that has one of the best selections you will find. From holy grains to local favorites. You can also order delicious food from their neighbor Cleats. Our beer tender was knowledgeable friendly, and attentive making sure we felt like regulars. Also the crowd it brings in is fantastic, beer lovers sharing the experience. I wish I was local, I would be there all the time. Thank you The Whale Collective.

Very knowledgeable bartend who is passionate about craft beer. Top tier draft beer selection. Great live music venue.

The Whale is essentially a beer tasting collective. It offers a large number of locally brewed beer on tap as well as an extensive collection of canned and bottled local brews. It’s inside The Refinery and has a nice minimalist vibe bar area and out side tables on a large elevated patio. We were there for a late afternoon beer tasting before dinner and were well served by the variety of offerings and a competent bartender. Plenty of onsite parking and food options include the adjacent restaurant and transient food trucks. This is a good addition to the charleston beer community and we recommend a visit. It gets four clams on the coveted Five Quahog Rating Scale.

We arrived and thought we had gone to the wrong place! But tucked around the corner, we found it. Absolutely love the 80s vibe. They even had a little pop up with vendors and we ended up getting two 80s vintage jackets. It was a windy day though so we stayed inside the bar area. Very solid beer selection. Got there before it was crowded but did appreciate they let people bring their dogs inside. Would definitely come back here again!

Google
Cool spot to grab a beer and they have live performances outside. They also served beer from everywhere but Charleston. Oh and the T-shirts have top tier graphics. Highly recommend if you don’t want the big crowds and a nice beer.

I've been to the whale a number of times, even saw Yung Gravy at the Refinery once and came back for a drink. I'm a big fan of this spot for a few reasons: Service: the bartenders are always friendly, funny, professional and knowledgeable of what they serve. Beer list: there's no shortage of exotic or niche picks. They have a rotating tap and a plethora of cans and bottles from countries all over the world. In one of my pictures I'm drinking a beer from Tasmania. The vibe: great music, dimly lit with a purple neon light, and every time I have gone it's very quiet. 11/10 would recommend. I'm almost scared too many people will find this place.

Google
I think this place needs to very explicitly say that they won’t allow non-concert patrons to drink here during concert times. We were excited to check out a craft beer bar we hadn’t been to in town because the place had great reviews. We didn’t see signs outside, or anything on the website. We were directed by staff to go through Cleats to get there, and right as we were about to order, we were kicked out. I guess I don’t understand why you can drink next door during showtimes without a ticket, but can’t here? If the place is a concert-only venue during concert times, it needs to be made more obvious.
