Craft Beer Bar the Whale Anchors New Charleston Development the Refinery | Eater Carolinas

"A craft-beer bar that opened as the first retail tenant in Charleston’s new mixed-use development, The Refinery. It offers a wide selection of beers from around the world for on-site consumption or to take home, and its name references the beer‑world term for a hard-to-find brew—likened to Ahab hunting a whale in Moby-Dick. Founded by Jesse Van Note and Andrew Ross, who met while working at a brewery in Asheville, the owners launched their first location in Asheville in 2017, expanded to Greenville, South Carolina in 2019, and opened this Charleston outpost with an official opening on September 28. The space will host food trucks and expects other bars or restaurants to join the Refinery, currently operating in an early “build-it-and-they-will-come” phase.
