Where to Catch the Best Fish and Chips in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Head to San Pedro for one of the South Bay’s best versions of the British classic. Deeply fried until the Icelandic cod turns dark brown, the Whale & Ale’s version is beautifully seasoned with a generous, yet mindful sprinkle of salt. It’s always hot, so wait a few seconds before taking a bite of fish and chips from this beloved spot. Even with a recent change in ownership, the fish and chips are still among the best in the area." - Mona Holmes

A wonderful place with perfectly delicious food. The fish & chips are particularly good. The decor is unique outside, inside, in the bar, upstairs, and even in the bathrooms. Located in a special area of San Pedro, be sure to take the time to walk around the neighborhood after enjoying this special restaurant. Parking can be tight and metered on most days. Upscale meal pricing. Service dogs welcome. Enjoy!!

The staff and owner are super friendly and nice! I ordered the bangers and mash which was delicious. My husband ordered the fish and chips which was amazing and both were large orders. The pimms cup and the whiskey sour were refreshing and very tasty! Hopefully we'll get to visit again next time we're on vacation. (Sadly only took pictures of our drinks)

An absolute must! Grab a drink and a quick bite at the bar, enjoy an elevated casual dinner with your date or hang out with your friends upstairs on the couch. The owner makes you feel at home and the crowd is fun.

Moved to San Pedro a year ago, only to discover this place was closed. Imagine my delight when I found out it had reopened! I decided to check it out for the first time and was not disappointed. I started with a glass of French wine that was absolutely perfect—served in a glass with a decent rim, unlike the thick, cheap ones you often see at most pubs. For my meal, I ordered a burger that was succulent and topped with high-quality cheese, all on a brioche bun. And the pickles? Definitely not from a grocery store. The burger was so juicy that the juice dripped onto my fries, making them taste even better. For dessert, I treated myself to an espresso martini, and I’m very picky about those. This one was simply divine. My husband ordered an Old Fashioned, which was far from average and it was phenomenal. What a fantastic experience all around! Can't wait to come back.

Liked that there was a jazz band. Food is good. Had a cheeseburger. Companion had shepherd's pie. Nice place to be with friends, especially if you like live jazz music. Not sure, though, if music happens everyday...

Great gastro pub. Owner very friendly and welcoming. Great staff and great chefs in the kitchen. Our party if 8 has a variety of menu items, all great. Definitely a place to seek out and go back to. 7 draft beers on tap. All well served in peak condition.

This is an Irish pub in San Pedro, so it's not necessarily where you think to look for Irish fare. Our server was great....very friendly and very attentive, and all the staff seemed pretty welcoming. The atmosphere is a bit more dive bar than Irish pub and could use a little updating. The food was a little hit and miss. The chowder was a little fishy, and the ice cream with the bread pudding was freezer burned. But the French Dip was really good (and those fries/chips are probably worth the visit all by themselves)! The Scotch egg was different than any other we've tried, but in a good way. We went on a Saturday afternoon, and it wasn't super busy, but was starting to pick up as we left. So probably a good sign that the locals were starting to flow in. Not a "must stop", but worth a try.

We came in on first Thursday’s after exploring San Pedro for a bit. Very attentive server, nice ambience with open fireplace and old wood decor. Feels like an old Irish pub. Food is good. Sausage rolls were not what I expected, it’s an actual sausage wrapped in pastry, not ground meat. The Fish and chips were great and the gravy on the sausages and mash was really tasty. Two rounds of beers and ciders for two and it cost us $120 with tax and tip. Also they had karaoke on Thursday night which was a nice surprise. Recommend if you’re looking for warm vibe and comfort food.
