The Best Pub Grub in London | Scotch Eggs, Sausage Rolls and Chip Butty | Eater London

"The Wheatsheaf is a Borough Market institution. It is a glorious pub and effective in its coherence. The sandwiches should be the first port of call, whether fish fingers or beef shin and pickles or some other creation; buttermilk fried chicken makes for a tasty bowl; the sausage rolls mustn’t be ignored. Be warned, however: The Wheatsheaf’s location means punters might want to be tactical if seeking a hake fish cake of an evening. It’s usually worth waiting until the after work crowd have gone before settling down to curly fries. Or go, drink, then mop up the beer with cheddar bites and chutney. One plate, generous as it is, won’t be enough." - Josh Barrie

Good location at the back of the market. London prices obviously. Liked the the Yard area and freshly made pizzas there. Bar Staff polite and attentive apart from the manager who is quite rude and struggling with a busy day. Clearly lacking in customer service!

Great pub, and a lovely little pit stop if you’re visiting Borough Market. Huge selection of beers and ales, and fantastic service. Levi who served us was super bubbly and fun to chat to. Highly recommended!

We had a good experience at the Wheatsheaf, where the service was impressively quick and efficient, even on a busy Sunday. The pizza was flavorful and satisfying, making it a solid choice for a casual meal. However, we wished we had been given plates to make sharing easier. The Aperol Spritz was fairly average, but overall, the friendly atmosphere and prompt service made for an enjoyable visit.

Hello from Canada! This place was totally inviting and had a great vibe. Menu looked awesome, and Paris was sooo sweet and helpful! She also made a bomb margarita, extra spicy for me! Highly recommended. Right inside Borough Market. Super cute!

Yelp
A great place for a pint while visiting the markets. Any time I visit the markets, when I need to go to the toilet, I stop by the pub here and buy a pint and use their facilities. I was happy to see they carry an Australian favourite which is very rare in the UK, Stone and Wood. Great service, a great selection of beers and food and it was a great atmosphere.

Yelp
Need a pint and to rest your feet from the market? Get inside here. They have a few heated areas outside. Didn't do much more than have a beer so I can't testify to much else. Bartenders were friendly and fast.

Yelp
Great pub. Friendly and helpful staff, great atmosphere and an outside area to cope with the overflow. Excellent selection of beers and burgers. It can get very busy early in the evening (after work) so, if standing at a packed bar is not your thing, I would recommend booking a table for a get-together with friends. You can order from your table and it doesn't take significantly longer than going to the bar. If you do go to the bar, the staff are pretty quick anyway so I've never waited too long. There are a number of pubs/bars/restaurants in the (Borough Market) area and, as a Londoner, I can vouch for both the area and The Wheatsheaf as a great place for a night out.

Yelp
This place is essentially part of the Borough Market and we hunkered in here for a couple of pints after we had some fantastic meals in the market. Our bartender serving us was being trained but she was very accommodating and very cute as well! There's an outside patio that was quirky. It had half a VW Bus and other funky decorations. Just my speed though. I liked this spot and I wish we could've tried out the food or came back at night.

Yelp
A great date night experience. The wine and food absolutely top notch and great value for money. The bar and wait staff are fun and the service was impeccable, especially Doug. We will return next time we are in London

Yelp
Great place for a well served pint! I visited this place multiple times during my holiday visit, a true place to have an English pint. Well stocked with a variety of microbrews and the classics (Heineken, Guinness, etc.)

Yelp
The Wheatsheaf is one of those pubs that are very much on the spirit of the time: the decor is chick, but yet casual and as I found on my last visit it attracts the after work bankers and office workers. The nice thing about the Wheatsheaf is its outdoor area (open for smokers), which - with its rustic look - is very comfortable to sit in. Be careful: there's another Wheatsheaf just around the corner (on 24 Southwark Street), which is actually where I was waiting for my friend when he suggested to meet at the Wheatsheaf.

Yelp
Terrific! Great location with lots of seating options and areas. Food and drinks were great. Service was fast and friendly. Guy was even scrubbing the bottom of the bar while we were there. Would definitely go again!

Yelp
Standard London pub, slightly high-ish prices due to location. You'll get a mix of local professionals and tourists (due to proximity to Borough Market - it's literally right across the small road). Plan to queue a while for a drink and then enjoy that drink outside, standing up, like the rest of the bar. Pro tips: Not into the crowds or want a seat? Head around the corner and up Southwark Road to The Sheaf, a sister pub in the basement of the Hop Exchange. If you stick around Borough Market location, grab some empanadas from the Argentenian place across the way - they are open later than majority of stalls and they are tiny packets of delicious goodness to go with your beer!

Yelp
This is a really modern pub now. There's not much charm to it unfortunately. I never got round to frequenting it before the railway burrowed through its upper floor so I cannot really compare it to the former incarnation so i am guessing to some extent when i say it looked like it might have been a rather charming place. Still the outside space is certainly interesting and you can do a lot worse than Young's beers.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere here, especially the outdoor themed yard. The service is laid back and really friendly, home style heart filling soul warming food! With cute puns and poetry everywhere. I live nearby and always bring out of town friends here to experience the modern London pub feel.

Yelp
I visited this bar last night and really enjoyed the atmosphere. For a Thursday night, it was bustling. The music was fun and lively and the other clients seemed to be having a good time. I cannot attest to the service, as I met someone who had a drink waiting for me. However given the fun vibe and excellent location, I will absolutely be returning soon.

Yelp
I just like this place. Yes it's busy and a tad more than I'd like to pay for drinks but the outside space redeems it and it's the go to place in the area I'd say. Have you read their menu? It's puntastic. Favourite of mine 'Burger She Wrote'. They give you a flat cap when you order food. Hilarity. If you have a train going from London Bridge the times are displayed on a screen in the courtyard. Clever, ey.

Yelp
Recently renovated this bar boasts a stunning selection of beers and ales and a comfortable experience now it has been updated.

Yelp
Went in for a pint with a friend last night and was quite disappointed. It may look good on the surface, decor, selection of beers on tap, etc,....but I won't be going back in a hurry. 80's rock music on the stereo, fruitflies all over the place (I did mention this to the barmaid, who gave me a withering look) and possibly the most expensive round of 2 pints and 2 packets of crisps in London (£13, if you're interested). I think a visit to the other Wheatsheaf, The Rake or Market porter will be in order next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Had the Sunday roast which was excellent! Nice selection of beers. Staff attitude generally friendly.

Yelp
Really great borough market bar. Even popular when the market is closed. Typical youngs pub offerings with a young atmosphere. They have a nice courtyard with a food can. A great standby for a pint in the market, or after work. Much better than most city bars.

Yelp
Great place to have a pint. Friendly staff and laid back atmosphere. They have an unique selection of beer.

Yelp
The food was fantastic and the staff also very friendly. I would've given 4 stars except they took my not yet finished drink away before I had a chance to finish it. I added a second star as they did give me a half pint for free as an apology when I complained.

Candice R.

Yelp
Excellent grilled cheese and fries to go with your drink. Friendly staff and great environment, must visit when at Borough Market.
