"The Wheel is a small, bike-themed oasis with good cocktails, a great patio, and some of the friendliest bartenders in the city. Located behind a Juiceland and next to a laundromat, you'd never know this East MLK spot existed unless you ended up there on a date or your one cool coworker happened to take you after deciding you were worthy. And if you get hungry after a few drinks, Austin Daily Press is just a few feet away and will be happy to deliver a sandwich directly to you at the bar. photo credit: Ayron Vandergriff" - Jordan Haro

You have to give at least a star and I did not want to give that!!!!!! I have been to the wheel a couple of years ago. I really liked the vibe then. My sister was in town I chose the wheel again yesterday. However, the experience was definitely not the same!!!! The bartender (male) was blatantly rude.Answers were short as though I had offended him by asking questions. I have never experienced that type of behavior from a bartender of being so dry and non verbal. I left the drink I'd purchased and I wish to never return!!!!

Google
Cute little gem that’s tucked away. Their signature cocktails are super delicious and unique. Love the atmosphere and decor. Definitely will be back!

Kelsey Huse

Google
Incredible cocktails, cute place with bicycle theme. Deducting one star because ironically there is no bike parking here although it’s a very bikeable location. My friend and I parked across the street at Sour Duck Edit: bumping up to 5 since bike parking should return soon!

Google
I used to frequent The Wheel often, I moved away and moved back and I am glad to see that they’re still providing the same type service and quality cocktails. Bartenders are pretty awesome, experienced and friendly. I have been back twice already and plan to continue to come back. Great place for a night cap; especially if you’re not done with date night at nearby restaurants. The outside seating area is nice and chill. Check it out with friends.

I didn't try any food but it's a great lil neighborhood spot. Good beer selection great patio. I'll be back!

Google
Stopped by on a whim while in the area and glad I did. Was met with friendly bartenders. The vibe is chilled, cozy, and low key. Appreciate the bicycle theme which gives it a rustic and earthy feel. I tried the Charlotte drink which was good. I will return with friends!

Google
Cool place for drinks and conversation. Nice and comfortable outdoor area. Interesting drinks and friendly people.

Love this bar! Great spot to walk over to after a concert at Moody. They play vinyl records and have plenty of room to stretch out. Friendly bartenders always.

Yelp
Great service, great drinks and a cool vibe! The inside isn't very big but the patio is nice. Great decor from the ceiling and a creative wall of taps turned into a waterfall.

Alexandra J.

Yelp
I wanted to really like this place. I'm a cyclist and love anything bike themed, which the place was cool and decorated thoughtfully, BUT as my date and I entered the place we were chatting about the plants in a planter box because I'm a plant nerd. I wasn't even touching plants and the " bouncer" came over and said, "my boss said step away from those." We were like, what is wrong with discussing plants?! We thought I was weird and contemptuous. Then, there was the server at the bar. Surly, with his uncaring attitude, sauntered over after we sat at the bar right in front of him for 10 min. Then also did not check on us until long after my drink was gone and we ASKED for another drink. The air about the place was arrogant and we didn't really feel a good vibe. At the end of the night, after last call, with plenty of time before 2 AM, we were hurried to drink our drinks that we just ordered, with looks of contempt, from the bar manager and her resting BF AND the bartender. We wheel not be going back there

Curt R.

Yelp
You should watch your tab and count your drinks. Or just pay cash as you go..........

Yelp
The Je Ne Sais Quoi cocktail for the month of August is seriously one of the best cocktails I've had in town. Definitely very sweet, but it doesn't taste like juice and the main attraction is actually the pillowy foam on top. I had trouble hearing my date, so the acoustics are a bit off, but it's a nice chill spot to meet a friend or date. Cocktails are about regular price for Austin. The place is billed as a whiskey bar and certainly had mostly whiskey but I'm not a whiskey person and there were still offerings for me to enjoy.

Shanice R.

Yelp
Honestly, the cocktails weren't that great they were a little strong I don't know they just were OK. I guess I would definitely suggest getting beer if you don't like interesting tasting Kasia definitely interesting to see if it is because I'm not used to it but I mean love the happy hour specials will come back maybe have a beer here. The setting is really cute and chill. So all in all cute spot definitely hidden in the back corner you might miss it if you don't know.

Hannah A.

Yelp
Good vibes, friendly bartenders, great drinks. Definitely would go back again. Me and my friend felt welcomed.

Sean S.

Yelp
A lot of fun chill vibes killer selection of spirits and just all around fun place to go for date night

Jr R.

Yelp
Chill place with good cocktails, indoor seating, outdoor patio, and knowledgeable bartenders.

Amanda F.

Yelp
This is a cool little bar. Cocktails will set you back about $10-12 per drink. I got the Layla which was similar to marg. It was good but not 100% sold. My husband got the old-fashioned. Overall it was on the sweeter side and he enjoyed it. I liked the vibe here and enjoyed the old records as music. The people were chill and the bartender was nice.

Chuck M.

Yelp
This place is perfect. Great cocktails and incredibly knowledgeable and friendly staff. It's perfectly unique and amazing. I love this place.

Liz G.

Yelp
Hidden gem with all the essentials. Small dive bar on the inside with Instagram beer water wall on the outside. Great happy hour and a bomb food truck to munch on. This is a whisky inspired bar that does not disappoint on the craft cocktails!

Janet S.

Yelp
Excellent place for pre dinner drinks. Great happy hour! Loved the bartender and interesting cocktails.

Victor H.

Yelp
(from June 2021) One dope ass bar! The bartenders, ambiance, drink selection, and people make this place a blast. They have multitude of whiskeys and beers to pick from. Plus the outdoor seating and dog friendly atmosphere make this a chill spot for mingling with friends or soaking in the awesomeness of the state capital of Texas. They also sell awesome shirts. Sadly the Excite Bike shirt I saw the bartender rocking wasn't available so I settled for the blue shirt. Please get more of those in! The Wheel, keep on spinning!

Joseph R.

Yelp
This used to be a nice place. Since they don't allow private restrooms due to many other "users" using illicit drugs, it's bad. There's no public restrooms, at all. Quite trashy for a bar that serves overpriced liquor. Learn to control the people you "ID" at the door-- atrocious.

Rob P.

Yelp
Finally got to try The Wheel after a long wait. Moved to the neighborhood almost a year ago and when I tried to come here, they hadn't reopened. Came today to have a celebratory vaccine cocktail. It looks like they used to have a $4 whisky of the day... well, it's now $5 but the winning bet is to make it as a cocktail for $8. An $8 old fashioned? Can't say I'm mad about that. Jenny behind the bar was super friendly and I gotta say it's nice to sit at an actual bar again.

Misha T.

Yelp
Good bar. Lots of wheels. Indoor and outdoor seating with a solid beer selection. Staff is gruff but responsive. No complaints.

Oziel G.

Yelp
Loooove this cozy bar the fact that they only play records tells you everything you need to know this is a hidden gem.

Laurene T.

Yelp
Update: We left a cash tip for our $66 tab, and after the charge cleared, we just found out they charged us a $15 tip on top of the cash we left. We have spent a month fighting it with the credit card company. It's disappointing because the staff there was great. And the drinks were fantastic, but this kind of behavior is pathetic and makes us question returning.

Aarti P.

Yelp
Been here a few times, sat outside, sat inside!! It's just one of those solid kind of places that you know you are guaranteed a satisfying drink served up by a friendly and knowledgeable team surrounded by others who like me just want a nice chill environment to sip on their libations.

Leila R.

Yelp
They redid their patio and it is spectacular! Covered? Check. Heat lamps? Check. Amazing way to spend any giving evening in ATX? Check! Ok, so this place is just super adorbs in a very approachable, contempo-rustic, "shhhh, don't tell anyone or else the ubiquitous "they" will ruin it for the rest of us" kinda way. The barkeeps know their stuffs, their cocktails are legend (wait for it) dary without the arrogance or pretension you might expect from a place of this caliber; I think the lack of self-importance this place and the staff exude is one of my favorite things about it! If you are looking for a low-key place to drink handcrafted, amazing cocktails (the Madison, I'm just saying) in front of a draught-tap water fountain amidst a menagerie of interesting EastSide Austin folk, then come here and enjoy (you can even have ADP delivered!). Just please remember...mum's the word, the password changes daily, and if fratty bros or hipsters catch wind of this place...I will look for you, I will find you, and I will give you the spiciest side-eye of your life!

Amanda S.

Yelp
Sometimes I need .... A little bit of Madison in my life, a little bit of Molly by my side A little bit of Layla is all I need, a little bit of Ashley is what I see A little bit of Lyllian in the sun, a little bit of Avery all night long Lou Bega anyone? This place is definitely cool for sure! I love the cocktails and all the ladies names, very cute! My friend introduced me to this new spot. It is located off Martin Luther King right next to the Austin daily Press. The inside bar are is small and quaint. I love the side patio and this is where I spent a beautiful evening sipping on some cocktails and enjoying a sandwich which was delivered from next door. I had the Molly and the Layla cocktails and both were excellent, refreshing and went down nice and smooth. The patio has a gorgeous fountain with tons of beer taps spouting out water ... it was cool and creative feature to the atmosphere. The bartenders here are super nice and professional! If you are in the area I would absolutely recommend stopping in here for a Molly or Madison in your life!

Nicholas B.

Yelp
I really want to like this bar. It's cute, has a nice variety of seating... inside and outside and kinda-dense-in-a-good-way. The bartenders are cool folks with lots of great knowledge. The music isn't too loud - a good volume for talking but still bumping :-) Unfortunately though... its quite expensive, and the staff isn't super transparent about the pricing. For instance, the whiskey of the day is supposed to be $5. I got it with ice, and was charged an extra dollar. This might be trivial, but it sucks getting charged without warning, especially for something that shouldn't get an upcharge (even if the on-the-rocks pour is slightly more liquid)... kinda like getting charged for napkins. And in general, everything's pretty pricey for a neighborhood bar. I guess I'm a little too old school for all the new hotness in Austin. But I don't see any reason to visit The Wheel when you have so many other places that are both inexpensive and cool.

Alysha M.

Yelp
Great spot! Super awesome bartenders, very chill vibes. Go have dinner across the street at Sour Duck and then come here for a cocktail :)

Winston M.

Yelp
Big shoutout to the staff at The Wheel for creating a welcoming and responsible environment! They're following all the safety protocols while still offering a relaxed and warm outdoor bar experience. Thank you!!! Came here yesterday with my housemates to enjoy their cocktails with some ADP. The Layla and Ashley are perfect pairings with the warm weather and ADP's tortas.

Amanda P.

Yelp
Wonderful cocktails and beautifully presented! Love the intimate ambience of this place even with covid plexi-glass in place inside. Bar staff was very kind and very knowledgeable which is greatly appreciated. Outdoor and indoor seating options were great. Crowded on a Friday night which is a good sign!

Sarah M.

Yelp
The Wheel was really well decorated, which set the evening off to a good start. The indoor area is intimate, dimly lit, and has a sort of prohibition-era bar feel with its tin ceiling, newspaper clipping wallpaper, and red lighting. Outside, you'll find a large patio with lots tables, and a great fountain made from beer taps. The drinks... well, my beer was way too expensive for what it was (a fairly generic IPA), and their selection for beers was limited (on draft: 8 taps, 1 IPA). HOWEVER, I know that's mainly due to the fact that The Wheel's specialty is whiskey. If whiskey's your drink of choice, I'm sure you'll love it here. They have $4 daily specials, and a number of specialty cocktails. I'm glad I gave it a shot, and I'll definitely recommend it to my whiskey drinking friends, but if you're looking for anything besides whiskey (or maybe a nice cocktail) I'd steer you elsewhere.

Jeff C. J.

Yelp
Cool vibe, friendly staff, loud music. Great cocktails! Expertly made with detail, unique bitters, and perfectly balanced.

Emily J.

Yelp
Love the dark and divey vibe! Super cool! We live a couple blocks away and I am kicking myself in the ass for never coming here before! Def kinda bar

Oscar N.

Yelp
A local gem, with awesome bartenders and affordable drink prices. A highlight is their whiskey of the day 4 dollar wells and 7 dollar cocktails. Great indoor and outdoor season and a great place for a date or meet up.

Kim Z.

Yelp
I was in Austin for a conference and stumbled on this bar thanks to Yelp. I truly enjoyed every minute of the experience, and my tasty Old Fashioned which was a perfect choice to compliment the atmosphere. The bar tenders are super friendly and the place is eclectic, dark and decorated in a vintage style. They also have the best t-shirts I have ever seen at a bar. I was bummed that the Excite Bike 80s Nintendo themed shirt was sold out in my size because I'd be rocking that all the time. Good vibes, great ambience and a great spot to hang after a long day.

Shveta M.

Yelp
4.5. The Wheel is our go to spot any day of the week. The owner always has the most unique, highly rated beers on tap usually before you can grab them anywhere else in Austin. And they have quite a cocktail selection. I suggest you try the Molly which is made with Colorado High Vodka infused with beets, jalapeño, ginger beer and lime juice. It's a spicy citrus version of a Moscow mule. They make it there on site and let it sit for 72 hours before serving. They always play amazing vinyls and the patio is perfect even on the hottest day. I'm so lucky to have them as our neighborhood bar. The ladies restroom is always kind of dirty and has an odor. Other than that, this place is a gem.

Kimberly K.

Yelp
Positioned on the same lot with Austin Daily Press, Juiceland and laundrymat - you can't go wrong with this bar. Place a food order with ADP and they bring it to your table at The Wheel. Then, go throw in a load of laundry and take yourself over to the Wheel to drink some whiskey. The Wheel has a wonderful outdoor seating area with a fountain made out of taps. My kiddo was with me recently and he played in the fountain and dirt, then later ate a ADP taco and a juiceland smoothie while I ate dinner with Amanda S. The Wheel has daily whiskey specials. i tend to go on Thursdays, so I've only tried Tin Cup.... My favorite cocktails are the Molly, which is a fruit/veg juice based whiskey cocktail. I also love the Madison - a whiskey and vanilla bitters cocktail, topped off with a burnt orange rind. The service is awesome here.

Tristan B.

Yelp
In a town exploding in size and popularity, The Wheel retains a strong neighborhood feel. The bartenders are extremely friendly and seemed genuinely interested in conversation beyond just your tip. They definitely specialize in cocktails so I would probably look elsewhere if you are looking for a nice draft or bottle of Shiner. I had 2 different specialty cocktails, both of which were good but definitely on the pricier side ($10-$15 each). They have a large patio space for meeting up with friends and the indoor bar is intimate enough to make it a decent first date spot worth checking out.

Pati M.

Yelp
Went there this past weekend with friends and really enjoyed myself! I really like their inside decor and the bartender was awesome! We sat outside because the weather was beautiful and for a small patio area they crammed a lot of seating in there. Thankfully it doesn't feel like it. My one and only complaint would be that the beer pours were pricey in my opinion. Glad they have a pretty good craft beer selection though! They had a 10 oz pour of bomb for $10. The 12oz bottle is around that price. I will for sure come again to come try out some of their mixed drinks!

Delia S.

Yelp
Went on a bar crawl with a friend and this was the last bar we copied up to. Our bartender, Adam, was friendly and personable and mixed up some fine cocktails. I love a guy who can help you pick the perfect drink and serve it up with a smile. The bar is smallish, but plenty of room for the crowd assembled that night. The decor is cute, the outdoor area is also nice, although we were enjoying the indoor A/C on this particular night. Unfortunately, last call came sooner than I would've like, but it just means we will have to visit again. I can't wait for cooler weather to enjoy the outdoor patio.

Nix D.

Yelp
Everything is awesome about this place from customer service to whiskey selection. I love the whiskey of the day, one of the main reasons why I come here besides the location. They don't have food, but you can order food from the daily press and they will bring it to you. Outdoor and indoor seating is great and they have a covered patio if the rain shows up.

Zachary A.

Yelp
Parking can be troublessome, and space is limited, but easy to have a good time here. More of a hangout spot than a sports bar. No TV, limited beer selection that runs out quickly (both IPA kegs tapped out on a random Tuesday night), and no food. You come here to let the night get away from you and order some strong cocktails. Lots of outdoor space is cool and bring your own food is actually a plus in my book. Beer selection 8 on draft, but good prices at $7/ish per big pour. Everyone is nice and vibe seems 20s-30s clientele. I liked the Wheel for what it is, a good starting point nearby my apartment to begin a drinking night.

Melissa H.

Yelp
I got stood up on a date here but Jenny and the other bar staff turned it into such a fun night! They made me the most delicious Daiquiri and had me laughing almost to the point of tears. My new favorite spot!! Awesome staff, delicious drinks, and guaranteed to cheer you up if you're having a bad night! 10/10!

Kelly S.

Yelp
Well isn't this place just adorable? Whoever put it together did done good. From the beer tap-fountain outside to the perfect little planter and the giant bathrooms and the wheel theme carried throughout, it's a sweet little neighborhood spot that I'd make my regular if I lived anywhere close. I mean, they put cucumbers in their water. They've got a whiskey of the day special and some featured cocktails. I tried a chai spiced beer from Stone that was really interesting. It feels like a place you could go solo after a rough day or take a group of friends (but not too many people.) The parking leaves something to be desired and our drinks were a little too heavy on the aperol but I'd totally bring a friend or a client here that I wanted to impress.

Amy D.

Yelp
After seeing pics of their cool tap water fountain I was intrigued by the Wheel. On a gorgeous sunny day we decided to check out this new east Austin bar. Upon walking up I was surprised at how small the space is. The beautiful open beer garden with the steady sound of flowing water made for a wonderful relaxing atmosphere. They are super dog friendly even providing water bowls for their 4 legged guests. The Wheel is a full bar with lots of hard liquor, a small selection of local taps and a small but well thought out selection of 1/2 bottles of wine. They do a whiskey of the day for $4. Jesse ordered a Big Bark and I got a Topo Chico and a pinot noir. We chilled at the bar and noticed they draw a nice friendly crowd. They hosted a Tito's benefit for MS. For $20 there was generous Tito's drinks and a silent auction to raise money for the MS ride Tito's is participating in. This is a small neighborhood bar with a friendly bar staff. I would defintely come back for the chill patio.

Darren B.

Yelp
This is an awesome new bar with fantastic bartenders (Aaron and Indy), a cool vibe, great decor (loved the copper platted ceiling, old ad paper wall paper and plethora of old bicycle riding photos), and really tasty drinks. Yet another new place where you can tell they give a s&$%. I had their "The Madison" cocktail which is High West Double Rye Whiskey, Vanilla Syrup, Orange, and Vanilla Bitters. They also stick a couple of cloves into the orange peel and set them on fire prior to putting it in the drink adding another layer of flavor. Plus all is poured over a great big ice cube, the way it should be done. Both the outside and inside areas are great with different feels. In addition to their cocktails, they also have a good selection of whiskey's to choose from including their $4 daily whiskey specials along with other spirits, beer, and wine. I like this place a lot and it has definitely been added as a new favorite to frequent.

Esteban P.

Yelp
Really cool semi-hidden bar with good drinks and an awesome small outdoor space. Not fancy, not divey, just right. We had the Lavender and the Aperol based cocktails. Both were nice, the Aperol one was better. Will come back soon.

Sevda G.

Yelp
I tried 3 cocktails in this place and they were all so good. You can have a nice date or a girls night out in this place. The staff is very friendly and the ambiance is perfect. They don't serve food but there's a sandwich place right next to it where you can order food and they bring it to your table.

Jessica S.

Yelp
First time here. ---super--- chill bartender, knew his beers too. Sat outside in the perfect little nook for some sun. Parking not a problem on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Derek E.

Yelp
The Wheel is my favorite place to get a drink in town. It's cool and hip, but also laid back and chill. There isn't music blasting, and it's usually chill enough that you can talk to your friends without yelling! Isn't that kind of the point for a neighborhood hangout? OK - lets talk the drinks... The beer selection of maybe 10-12 taps is always good and interesting. There are always a couple of nice hoppy choices, a sour or two, something seasonal, and a couple cool experiments from the local breweries. There is a whiskey of the day for 4 bucks, and if you are a whiskey noob like me, it is a fun and cheaper way of trying out a few of em. The cocktails I have tried or stolen a sip from a friend have all been great. The Madison is my go to - a fun twist on an Old Fashioned. And if you're hungry go ahead and order some food at Austin Daily Press and they will deliver to your table.. the Jalapeno Hush Puppies and the housemade chips are great bar snacks! Also, if you don't have access to laundry at your place, you should probably start up a load next door, and come have a drink while you wait :)

Kelly G.

Yelp
This place was a complete surprise. I was staying across the street for a business trip, and thought I'd go to this mysterious, even kinda scary-looking bar. I waked in and felt like I was at Cheers. The bartenders were funny, talkative, and friendly, and their banter with customers was entertaining and smart. They were so much fun! Aaron (so?) was a real kick as he was about as friendly and funny as they come, and simply a great guy. And their customers reacted by being funny as well. We had a long conversation about movies that had people debating what was Tom Cruise's best movie, but ranging far beyond Cruise. They had a nice selection of beer (including one if my favorites, Lagunitas Lil' Sumpin') on tap, and one if the best Manhattans I've ever had. I stopped in for a quick drink @7:00 and didn't leave until 11:30. 'Course, having terrific Tex-Mex food from The Loop News next to the bar helped. Can't wait to visit again.

Jon B.

Yelp
Went in on a weekday, atmosphere is always dead/quiet. I ordered a few rounds and was surprised to see something in my drink. I think the taps need to be cleaned... on top of that the bartender automatically added the tip to my bill. Oh well, I wont be coming back.

Luci H.

Yelp
Where my upper 20's millennials at? The dive frequenters, who moonlight at swanky cocktail bars occasionally? This bar is for you. The Wheel is the lovechild of an old man dive and a young, sexy craft cocktail bar. It's a blend of two of my favorite hangouts, so you can imagine I stop by often. Plus, it's within walking distance to my house. #bonus They have a variety of beers and house specials that will appease the pickiest of drinkers and a small patio (complete with astroturf) where you can hang around with your friends and even your pooch. It's not large, though, so don't bring your entire recreational softball league. It's perfect for a couple close pals.

Jeffrey P.

Yelp
I travel often for work and I love to find places like this gem. Local spot with a chill ass vibe. I spoke to a few of the bartenders and through the weeks I was there and basically felt at home. So cool and just respectful ass people. Btw I've already purchased two T-shirts from here and will prob get more lol. But yeah I def recommend this place if all you want to do it have a chill convo with some cool ass staff and people, and have some good ol drinks.
