I'm going for 4 stars here because of the quality and selection.
Admittedly, taking one off is mostly because of my own issues - I hate not tipping.
So I tipped. For counter service. No prep. No table waiting. No water refilling. No plate removal. Just getting deli.
The checkout sort of passive-agressively forces you to - although they do say "you can customize the tip or leave none", one would feel like a cheapskate not leaving one. But leaving one for counter service - I did not eat there, just got some deli - is highly unusual. Maybe a local custom? And by "local" I mean "in this town", as I travel to VA frequently and never experienced this.
Minimum preset tip is over 20% (24, I think - can't remember exactly). Really?!?
Manhattanite here. Trust me - I'm a hefty tipper. NYC is tip-crazy. But the lowest preset being over 20% is just... wrong. Very wrong. Very VERY wrong. Tipping over 20% is for far above and beyond good TABLE service, usually for groups of 4 and above (and me, who rounds up to an attractive even number - I'm a Virgo, I like neat credit card statements).
The "custom tip" option was glitchy, took forever to arrive at around 12% and an ugly uneven number which will look horrid on my statement.
For counter service. On already not cheap stuff.
Having said that, the salesperson was very helpful and kind; ultimately, I did not regret tipping. What I regret is feeling bullied into it.
I was extremely happy with the quality of everything purchased, although still think the price is a touch high. One would think the tip was part of a $40/lb salami and $30/lb cheese. Math, anyone? I ended up paying $48/lb for the salami and $36 for the cheese. And feeling cheap because I tipped 12% rather than the minimum preset.
The situation itself and its awkwardness was enough for me to not go back. The phrase "You're not that hot" kept coming to mind. This should be a 3-star. But the deli was delicious and the salesperson was great.
