The Whole Ox is a victim of its own success. Saturday is the only day I can get there of course and, since it is not open on Sunday, every Saturday is packed to the max! Very crowded!!! Uncomfortably crowded!!!
Now that would be okay if you were only doing some shopping and then taking home your purchases. But The Whole Ox also makes food for consumption on premises. Sandwiches, soups, salads, etc. The problem? There are only 5 or 6 tables at most. They are always crowded! People with sandwiches stand around, waiting for someone at the tables to leave. That only makes things worse!
Now on to the good stuff! The food!!! I had a pulled pork sandwich that was to die for. The meat was perfect! Big chunks of juicy, tasty pork, some with seared edges. The sauce was sweet and complex - the cole slaw - crunchy and tangy! All together, a perfect pairing. My spouse got the fried chicken sandwich. Now, the breading did not stay on the chicken but the chicken was perfectly cooked otherwise. Hot, juicy and flavorful! The house made ranch dressing was likewise beautiful!!!
We have also bought meat from The Whole Ox before and have never been disappointed.
The service is somewhat lacking but I think that is also a result of the over-crowding of this business.
Go to The Whole Ox - go hungry - you will love the food! But maybe take a day off work and go on a weekday!!1
