33 LA Restaurants To Help You Avoid Delivery Deja Vu - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Sure, making tea at home sounds nice and romantic (and maybe even a little intellectual), but when it comes down to it, you probably don’t have a proper infuser, or like, still use the microwave to heat up water. Let The Ox help you. This Koreatown coffee shop has pivoted from in-store sales to selling giant, half-gallon jugs of tea in flavors like wild berry hibiscus, green tea citrus, and Blue’min milk tea - a sweet, subtle jasmine milk tea that’s steeped for 18 hours and comes in a beautiful, bright blue color. Place an order for pick-up or delivery through their website." - kat hong

Google
Such a cool place. Lots of different foods to look around at. Friendly and nice staff. VERY limited seating. Thankfully someone was leaving as we were ordering, so we had a place to sit. I got the yardbird buffalo style with fries. Their fries are amazing! I’d come back and just to order fries. The yardbird was delicious and just the right amount of spice. Quite a mess to eat, but totally worth it. My husband got the burger and it was just ok. Nothing spectacular. We both agreed if we came back we’d stick to chicken and fries.

My fiancé and I just moved to the area about two months ago and have had so much fun finding and trying all of the incredible local businesses around us. We found the Whole Ox one night we were desperate for a good burger and decided to head over. We were immediately welcomed, including with local recommendations and a sampling of wine, and left with a burger and a pulled pork sandwich (and some other goodies) in tow. Safe to say we were beyond impressed and continue to be after every trip; whenever people come to visit us, we love to share it with them! The food is consistently delicious, the market is always stocked with amazing fresh and local goods, and the staff always provides excellent customer service. We are excited to become regular customers!

Google
I’m a local and wanted to try a burger that was delicious but also not 25-30 minutes away. After some searching this small business popped up on google. I called ahead to place a Togo order and got the black ox burger special(limited time) fries and a side of buttermilk ranch. The burger was unique and rich it had a garlic black truffle mayo coopers sharp cheese. The fries were seasoned well and the ranch had a lot of flavor to it. Friendly staff. Definitely will return when I’m feeling low on iron again!

Google
The burger on the pretzel bun was fantastic. My friend said it’s the best burger he’s ever had, so my wife and I decided to put that to the test. I’d say it’s definitely a top 5 burger for me, and possibly a top 3. Absolutely worth the trip. The staff is very friendly and helpful and they clearly care about their products and service. They’re very proud of what they’re doing, and they should be. Highly, highly recommend. This will be at least a monthly visit for us from now on. Also, my wife was obsessed with the French fries. They were very good. I don’t do sauces, but she says the sauces were delicious.

Google
Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday. The Yardbird, large fries were ordered. The Yardbird comes in either original or spicy (buffalo) and we ordered the spicy without regrets. The wife and I split the sandwich and fries as the portions were plenty. The chicken was slow cooker tender on the inside with a crispy battered exterior topped with buffalo sauce and pickles slices on a bakery fresh bun. We love the Town of Marshall as it is a small town located between 50 and 66. The Whole Ox is a full service deli that has local meats and goods and is definitely worth getting off of 66 for. Thank you to the outstanding staff that made are first visit memorable. Give them a try folks, you won’t be disappointed.

Google
Delicious burgers. The fresh ground beef adds such a distinctive flavor. The duck fat French fries were perfectly cooked (crispy outside, soft inside) and wonderfully seasoned. The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars was the price. It was a bit expensive.

Google
Great cheeseburgers, nice atmosphere, service was good as well. 1st time trying this place out. The fries were really good and flavorful. Parking on the street is free, and they have parking in the back as well. They seem to be very clean from what I saw.

Yelp
The Whole Ox is a one-stop-shop for food and wine. Yes it's a butcher shop, but more importantly to me, it has its own in-house restaurant with some fantastic food. They serve beer on top as well. If that's not enough, you can pick up baguettes, cheese, and an assortment of wine (including local favorites such as Linden and Glen Manor). I'm not talking low-end stuff; more like well selected champagne and high-end dairy products. They do have tables for sit-down service, but it's a small building so it can get crowded. Try ordering in advance instead; you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Great butcher shop & they cook a view amazing items to eat there - great hamburger meat!! & don't forget to try their dessert cakes!

Yelp
Holy. Smokes... the burgers and fries here are DIVINE. I rarely leave a 5 star, but this place is AMAZING. I got their ox burger and it was fabulous. Ive traveled all over the US and destinations abroad. Who knew the best burger I'd ever have was a few miles up the road in Marshall, Va? My only complaint: a bit pricey. That said, it's worth it. My son, who is a picky eater, agrees with me that this place is 5 star.

Yelp
The yardbird sandwich was so delicious! Food came out quickly and I couldn't wait to dig in. Great staff and a great environment all around.
google avatar

Yelp
While I haven't shopped the butcher, the hot food was delicious. We had some visitors and decided to give this a try. Luckily it was a quiet day since there's not a lot of seating. My wife and I both went with The Big Ox and split an order of fries. It's a quality burger and quite filling. Though the menu isn't that large, I'm trying to figure out how to decide on ordering something other than a burger!
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
The absolute best burgers, hands down! I highly suggest getting the duck egg on your burger, cuz it's so amazing!

Yelp
What a cool place! It's a combination of a butcher, deli, convenience store, and mini restaurant. We were hungry, so we decided to order a few burgers and give them a try. And the expectations were pretty high in that you KNOW that the meat for your burger was as fresh as could be. After we placed our order, we were fortunate to find a seat as there were only a few tables available for their patrons (one of a few shortcomings). Also, while we were waiting, we noticed that there was no heat in the store on what was a cold day (which was another shortcoming). So we left our jackets on and patiently waited. Shortly, the burgers arrived and we took our first bite. Wow! It was amazing! The freshness of the beef really came through. And it was cooked to perfection. I can't wait to come back and sample other items!
google avatar

Joanna D.

Yelp
The seating is limited due to it being a butcher shop. They have a variety of items for sale. The burgers were spectacular! Juicy and perfectly cooked! The fries with the garlic aioli were perfection. Service was fast, staff is friendly and welcoming.

Yelp
The Whole Ox is a victim of its own success. Saturday is the only day I can get there of course and, since it is not open on Sunday, every Saturday is packed to the max! Very crowded!!! Uncomfortably crowded!!! Now that would be okay if you were only doing some shopping and then taking home your purchases. But The Whole Ox also makes food for consumption on premises. Sandwiches, soups, salads, etc. The problem? There are only 5 or 6 tables at most. They are always crowded! People with sandwiches stand around, waiting for someone at the tables to leave. That only makes things worse! Now on to the good stuff! The food!!! I had a pulled pork sandwich that was to die for. The meat was perfect! Big chunks of juicy, tasty pork, some with seared edges. The sauce was sweet and complex - the cole slaw - crunchy and tangy! All together, a perfect pairing. My spouse got the fried chicken sandwich. Now, the breading did not stay on the chicken but the chicken was perfectly cooked otherwise. Hot, juicy and flavorful! The house made ranch dressing was likewise beautiful!!! We have also bought meat from The Whole Ox before and have never been disappointed. The service is somewhat lacking but I think that is also a result of the over-crowding of this business. Go to The Whole Ox - go hungry - you will love the food! But maybe take a day off work and go on a weekday!!1

Monica A.

Yelp
Awesome service atmosphere stocked items and its a local business. Been here frequently loved everything we have tried. Super tasty!!

Yelp
I was curious about this place because of its popular burgers, so I decided to check it out. First of all, it's not just a regular restaurant; it's more than that. It's a butcher shop and a mini-market that offers produce, a variety of wines and beers, cheese, and prepared foods, all in one place. I had The Big Ox, which was delicious and consisted of two freshly made beef patties. It was so big that I could not finish it. And of course, I had to try the Hand Cut Fries. Not only did they look delicious, but they were also delightfully crispy and perfectly cooked and seasoned--the best fries I have ever had.
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly, the burger is absolutely amazing! Being a butcher the meat is farm to table and it shows in the taste and smell. The staff is amazing..

Blaze K.

Yelp
Been meaning to go here for 10 years. Finally stopped today. It WILL be the first of many visits. Great butcher shop/restaurant/food emporium that is truly cooler than the other side of the pillow. My main focus today was charcuterie. BINGO! Our area has become held hostage by the friggin boars head brand. Garbage! Finally a place I can visit that has multiple artisanal cured meats. My new favorite was one flavored with real spruce and beer. Unbelievable. Great selection of area cheeses as well. Entire wall of refrigerator/freezers with house made soups, sauces etc. AND, how can you go wrong with a place that has steak aging in their own aging cooler behind the register. Yes, a bought a beautiful bone in ribeye. Tomorrows dinner. Can't wait to go back to try the restaurant menu. I have been told their burgers are without peer. On the main drag in Marshall (Rt-55) or just go west on 66 it's 15 minutes from Haymarket. I will be a regular here.

Yelp
This was an unexpected and welcomed stop during an after lunch stroll on Main Street. Curious to see what a local butcher shop was offering and drawn by how busy it was at 3 in the afternoon on a Saturday, our group decided to check out The Whole Ox. Even though we had already eaten lunch, we purchased a bison hotdog and the yardbird. GET THR YARDBIRD. It's a chicken sandwich but the tender was cooked beautifully. Flavors were all there and writing this review makes me crave more. The sandwich had a thick and juicy cut of chicken that was just right: it didn't ooze all over the place and it definitely was not dry. The bison hot dog was good as well but the toppings seemed to distract away from the meat. In the freezer section we picked up a container of mushroom truffle butter and homemade walnut arugula pesto to help with the potatoes and roasted vegetables we were going to cook for dinner. The butter was not too overpowering and gave the roasted potatoes a nice flair but the real star was the pesto. We were not expecting the pesto to really bring out the flavors of roasted brussel sprouts and asparagus but it elevated them to a new level. Too bad the place isn't open on Sunday because our group would've stopped to buy more goods.

Yelp
I bit into the Boardwalk Smash and said, "'oh. my. God, this is the best burger I've ever had." I'm serious, and, I love smashburgers, so that is some high praise from a self ranked connoisseur. I wish (and highly recommend) that a smash burger was a forever item menu. (If Whole Ox is listening... PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!). Anyway, everyone here is absolutely wonderful and the shop if packed with fun/local cheese and pantry items. A MUST STOP!

Missi F.

Yelp
Everything I've ever had here is amazing! The service is great and it's comfortable and super clean!
google avatar

Yelp
As many have said, this isn't just a restaurant but a butcher shop, a wine store, and the best burgers in the area as far as I'm concerned. Friendly staff, great prices, and an excellent array of food to choose from off the menu. The burgers are truly second to none and the fries are to die for as they as hand cut and cooked to a crispy perfection.
google avatar

Tara F.

Yelp
We found this place while driving through town and had to stop! It's a small butcher shop with a great wine selection and delicious little restaurant. We arrived right as the place opened and it was pretty packed inside. The store has anything you need when it comes to cooking a flavorful meal (spices, oils, etc.) The menu is small, but the food definitely is not! Sandwiches/burgers are a decent helping, so you won't be leaving hungry. You can order from the menu at the deli counter in the back and they have a small seating area on the side to dine in. I ended up ordering the chicken salad and caprese salad, both were so fresh and full of flavor. They start a tab when you order, because you are pretty much guaranteed to add something additional to your check before you leave. We will definitely return to purchase food to take home next time.
google avatar

Mary A.

Yelp
A great butcher shop. Friendly staff and a wonderful selection of frozen meals. Several people were eating meals that looked delicious. Really adorable shop.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by this butcher shop for lunch on our way to the winery. It is a small shop with some outdoor and minimal indoor seating. You can come here to buy meats and other items, but they also have a small food menu with draft beers. Got their big ox burger and yardbird fried chicken sandwich and a small fries with chipotle mayo sauce. The burger was amazing and seasoned so well! Their fries were fresh cut potatoes and came right out of the oven. You can pick a dipping sauce. I really enjoyed their yardbird chicken..very meaty! Their buns were light and soft. We really w enjoyed their food and hope to be back to purchase some meats. Parking was easy street parking..what a cute quaint neighborhood!

Yelp
This must be a secret we walked in on. Super-friendly staff with awesome food. Thank You. The family got the 2 Yardbirds and the Bison Burger special and fries. The Yardbirds were huge, juicy, with the perfect crunch of fried chicken. It is served with buttermilk ranch, lettuce, and pickle. You can add bacon and/or blue cheese crumbles. Delish The Bison Burger (with pink) was a slam dunk on flavor. It is served with caramelized onions, blue cheese crumbles, and garlic aioli. Amazing The fries were perfectly seasoned. Option of sauces were phenomenal, we got traditional ketchup and garlic aioli. On the way out the door we selected items for dinner for the week. English bangers, Cod, and Red Curry Chicken Soup. A GEM

Yelp
Love the Whole Ox! Chicken Sandwich with fries is my takeaway favorite. Great selection of gourmet ingredients that can't be found nearby. The butcher counter is fantastic and cuts can be ordered in advance. I get my tri-tip here all the time. Frozen sauces and soups are very tasty! Highly recommend the bolognese and tomato w/ basil sauces. Waitstaff are friendly and always helpful. there is some seating to dine in if you so desire. Definitely stop by if you're in the area.

bernadette s.

Yelp
Just picked up my Turkey for thanksgiving. As usual, highly efficient and helpful. Lots of extras to tempt while waiting to pay. Will be back again
google avatar

Veronica R.

Yelp
Tried their burgers for the first time tonight and they definitely live up to the hype!!! The fries were also amazing, I chose the chipotle sauce. YUM!!!! Walked inside and easily ordered from the butcher counter. You then pay by the front door. Easy!! You can browse around their store, good selection of cheese, crackers, dried pasta, olive oils. They also have some wine, beer and spirits. Overall nice vibe inside! Some tables are inside if you choose to dine in but takeaway is just as easy! Nice staff. Try it out if you're in Marshall!!!
google avatar

Pete A.

Yelp
What a gem this is. The Yardbird is the best chicken sandwich my wife and I have ever tasted, hands down. Their burgers are grilled in clarified butter...Yeah. Worth it. Took a couple soups to try with their focaccia. Incredible as well. Get the beef bourgenon. You'll be plenty happy and full for days.
google avatar

Preston W.

Yelp
Greatest burgers, fresh local meats & vegetables. Love the Yardbird sandwich! Best beef in miles!

Tom Y.

Yelp
I like to support local businesses but this one misses the mark. First the price point is foolishness. $25 for burger and fries. Must be following the Five Guys model. I appreciate they are trying to serve grass fed meats and the man running the counter is usually kind. I waited 20 minutes the other day after I paid because no one gave me my food after paying. Just sat on the counter in the back. I also asked for no pink and was given a slab of basically raw ground beef.

Jeremiah S.

Yelp
Incredible! The range of ingredients available to you as a home cook are mind boggling. Amanda is a wonderful host and business owner. Went to celebrate my wife's birthday and she treated my wife like an absolute celebrity. If every butcher/chef behaved like this restaurant's would be so crowded it would be a months long wait. Thank TWOx and Amanda. Your team and food are incredible!

Craig S.

Yelp
Just stopped in for dinner. Tired and weary from attending the Solheim Cup. Food was fantastic. Burger was super fresh, huge, and perfectly cooked. Steak Frites were likely the best I've ever had. Fast and friendly vibe.
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
This place is always a winner. The Bangkok Banty is a top tier chicken sandwich, and the fries are amazing. My husband hoovered his burger and we always get excited to come here.
google avatar

Lucia B.

Yelp
A friend of mine suggested this place for lunch when we were on our way to Luray Caverns. I would have never found it because it's located in the tiniest of towns. Unfortunately we came on a Sunday right before a holiday so they didn't have their full menu. I was dying to try their chicken sandwich and fries, which I've heard are amazing. With that being said, we went with the "brunch burgers" I guess these were a special menu item and are not always featured. The burger had a fried egg and bacon, we weren't that thrilled when we ordered because we didn't think there was anything that special about it but boy we were wrong! Hands down one of the best burgers we have ever had. Meat was so fresh and tasty and it was cooked to perfection!! We bought some pre-packaged sausages and asked the chef to cook them for us and he was nice to do so. Overall we had a great meal even though it wasn't the meal we were originally planing for! I did learn must people buy the meats for takeout, not as many people dine in, and honestly the seating area is very small and in a weird location. We will come back to try the chicken burger!!
google avatar

Gene K.

Yelp
3 1/2 stars..came in and waited while 3-4 people stood around looking at each other...no other customers in the store...after a few minutes employee finally approached us...bought hanger steak and a couple of "homemade" lamb sausages. I asked what was in the sausage....no one knew...one of the employees went to the back and began looking for the ingredients...after several minutes I told them forget it, paid and left.

JoAnne M.

Yelp
Amanda created the most fabulous charcuterie platter for the gold cup for me and it was a big hit. She even included and cooked the lamb chops I requested to be added to platter. I am hooked on this place the service and quality can't be beat. My husband purchased pork belly and cooked for gold cup and the quality was a 10. I highly recommend whole ox
google avatar

Sam F.

Yelp
The Whole Ox is a whole experience in itself, although we don't live in Marshall we come here often to get a variety of meats and there is no better burger you can get here! They have an amazing selection of meats, soups, sandwiches, drinks. All local, all amazing. If you're traveling by Marshall, stop here, if you're in Marshall you must come here. Even if you live in northern Virginia and have heard about how wonderful this bucolic setting is. It's a must.
google avatar

Aaron K.

Yelp
One of the best burgers I had. Only downside was that their buns were too fragile for some reason, but the juicy meat patty tasted too good to care about any small flaws.
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
Killer hamburgers served fresh and hot. Wine and beer available by the glass. Place is quite hospitable as well.
google avatar

Mark N.

Yelp
Love these guys going back to when they were in their old location in The Plains. This spot in Marshall is a better set up for them. You can't go wrong with anything there, but I have to recommend their house made items, as they really stand out: 1. The chicken pot pie 2. Their housemade sausages, especially the lamb, maple breakfast, chorizo, and hot Italian. 3. Housemade Smoked Bacon and Housemade Rashers (Irish Bacon) 4. Any of their Charcuterie 5. Their house made meatballs.
google avatar

Anh A.

Yelp
Frites with garlic aioli highly recommended, paired with their double stacked burger. Highly recommend their local cheese, in-house made cured meats. It's a cute place to stop at before you go on a picnic toward the Vineyards. 4 because their menu is somewhat limited and seating consists of about 4 tables.

R L.

Yelp
Best place to pick up fresh meat and have a nice lunch. This place is my go to on weekend for a good steak. Try em out. Stock up for the week, so much better than your grocery store.
google avatar

Neal E.

Yelp
Very cool little country butcher shop! All sorts of meats are available here, as well as other local food products, and from farther out around Virginia as well. I purchased two Lamb sausages, plus a 2 lb package of their smoked bacon, which I had them slice for me on the spot. I noticed they were carrying ciders from Albemarle Ciderworks (which is located down south of Charlottesville) - first time I've seen their ciders available outside of their Cidery (they make awesome English Style cider!) The sausage and the bacon was very good! The folks running the place are really nice!

Tim B.

Yelp
Darn good food, beautiful meat, friendly service, in a small country town ambiance. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Jim G.

Yelp
This is top notch food, more gourmet than it is "fast" food. Burgers are epic, the fries a hidden gem. The people who run this place are first rate. If they had actual parking or a drive-through I'd be here more often.
google avatar

Rebecca C.

Yelp
Immediately greeted and asked if I was looking for anything specific upon arriving - staff was cheery and offered loads of recommendations on wines and cheeses. Everything looked amazingly fresh and the diversity of selection was really compelling. However a little on the pricey side, and some items seemed unnecessarily marked up. Overall still a great option for specialty products and fresh eats!
google avatar

Christina G.

Yelp
Enjoyed our quick trip to The Whole Ox. Located in Marshall it is a very well stocked butcher shop with a range of products. Today we walked out with a Kelly Bronze turkey For our thanksgiving feast, truffle butter, salami, English muffins (amazing) and doughnuts! If it isn't made in the store it is from a relatively local farm, kitchen or field. The staff was knowledgeable and very helpful even with a very busy day. We will be sure to update this review after eating turkey! Really fun shop. I would love to come back!
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
When I say that The Whole Ox is literally the most amazing place I have ever eaten at, I say it with complete and total sincerity. The concept of the restaurant - butcher shop by day, butcher bar at night is pretty cool and adds a uniques that totally suits the Marshall area. The food here is amazing. I have not had a steak, but the cheeseburger is incredible. My boyfriend has had various steak options and he has loved everything he has tried. The mac and cheese is the best side on the menu. We have only had dessert once when we visited and that was great too. Pretty much if you're looking for a great experience, you will find it here. The staff is super nice and we have never had to wait for a table, but we tend to get there right away. The best place to sit is at the bar. You are basically right in on the action. I totally recommend this place! Absolutely awesome!

Raymond M.

Yelp
I had been meaning to check out this local lunch spot and love supporting local businesses. Plan was to grab lunch and then pick up some local farmed meat on the way out to take home. Walked in and loved the look and feel of the place until the nasty young woman taking orders appeared. Clearly hates her job. Calling her Nasty Is being kind. Walked out. I'm sure the owners work hard and have a great business. It's a shame that the labor shortage is so bad they are forced to keep such a person employed there. Never going back.

Padma W.

Yelp
I had heard good things about their hamburgers. I had the whole ox, which I didn't realize were two hamburger patties. I asked for it medium and it was overcooked (well done), which is always disappointing when the price is high ($12) for the middle of nowhere. The burger lacked flavor, which was also surprising since they are a butcher shop. And there was a single limp piece of lettuce.
google avatar

Arun M.

Yelp
I ate at their cafe and the food was good. The staff were friendly. The sitting area was small and probably better for parties less than 3. The price to food ratio was good. My one complaint was my steak was colder than my fries. This seems like a very comforting place in the colder weather. I hope I'm in the area again during that time.
