The Windmill

"Chef-Owner Tom Clarke built up an impressive resume before returning to his Essex roots to open this lovely village inn with his partner. After a charming welcome from Nancy into the characterful interior, where a small bar still serves some local drinkers, it’s time to enjoy the hearty yet refined cooking. Classical flavour and texture combinations run throughout a menu served well by quality produce, with desserts like dark chocolate crémeux proving a real highlight." - Michelin Inspector

First visit but will not be the last. My Father and I went for a Sunday roast to celebrate my birthday. As soon as we stepped inside, you could feel the warm, friendly, and welcoming ambience. The food was cooked to 95% perfection. We both had lamb, and it was juicy, tender, and still a little pink, just how it should be. My only criticism is that the shell of the potatoes was too hard, not crispy but hard. Even using a steak knife, it was difficult to get inside the shell, but once you did, you were glad that you had persevered as the inside was light fluffy and tasty. The service was quick and efficient without being obtrusive. There was no waiter standing at the end of the table, but one was there as soon as you looked up, perfection! 👌. I didn't have a sweet and regret it. My Father did, and it looked amazing 👍. The owner knew it was my birthday and made a special birthday platter which made me feel really special (I'm 58 and it made me blush 😊). As well as excellent food there is a very well stocked bar and even a cocktail menu. A rare but welcome sight these days. I'm already planning our next visit. A perfect place to take a lady (speaking from a mans point of view) for a romantic, impressive good value first date

We didn’t stay in the rooms but we Visited the restaurant. Excellent service. Food is superb. This is closer to Michelin star food than pub meals. Very creative and great value for money. Very accommodating of all ages, allowed us to have our baby & pram with us. Made us very welcome

My husband and I ate here very last minute and what a gem! The staff are amazing, so welcoming and take the time to explain every dish. The food is impeccable! We did the 5 course tasting menu and it was such a treat. Something so different to your standard pub food. They were also so great with our dog, giving her treats. We highly recommend it!

We came here for our anniversary celebration and had the 8 course taster menu (obviously). From start to finish it was outstanding in every way and comparable in quality to Michelin star restaurants I have been lucky enough to visit in the past. My particular highlight was the rose ice cream dessert which was mind blowing. The service and hospitality was also excellent and they were very welcoming and accommodating of my grumpy 2 month old baby! The only thing we want to do differently next time is add on the overnight stay and breakfast.

Delicious food, the best bread and butter I've ever eaten. We had the 5 course taster and actually it was all exquisite! Tasty unique cocktails. Great breakfast too and all with perfect service from Nancy. We stayed in the old Windmill. Very comfortable bed. Very clean. Coffee machine and slipper bath. V luxurious. The setting of the venue is also very pretty. We do highly recommend :-)

Out of the way restaurant that is well worth the time taken to get there. Food is excellent, fresh, high quality and well presented. Serving staff are friendly and helpful. Best described as a restaurant with a couple of rooms for when you don't want to have to have a designated driver. The Windmill is certainly busier than last time we were here which is good for the couple that run it. Needs to be careful not to let the service deteriorate as the numbers increase.

Absolutely terrible experience and would recommend people to avoid wasting their money. 8 of us were here on 15th September to celebrate a 40th birthday. We were originally offered 2 o'clock or 3.30. Arrived on time for 2. Waited 30 minutes and then we asked if we could order drinks. 45 minutes after arrival our food orders were taken. Out of the 3 starters on offer only 2 were available and out of the 3 mains only 2 were available. 1 starter did not arrive and bread was provided as an apology for the bad service so far. When the mains arrived the beef was extremely rare and very chewy. The potatoes must have been reheated many times and were rock hard and inedible. We skipped dessert and asked for the bill but 40 minutes later went to the bar as it hadn't arrived. We then had to stand and wait while it was itemised from the order pad. We were charged for the starter that was not provided so £10 was removed. Have never paid so much for disgraceful service, long wait times and terrible, inedible food.

It's a nice cosy little place. I tried the eight course tasting, and it was pleasing.
