Chicago’s Best Irish Pubs and Bars for St. Patrick’s Day | Eater Chicago

"The latest entry in Chicago’s Irish pub scene opened in Avondale in 2021. Grab a pint of Guinness or a craft cocktail and try some of the food made using recipes from the owner’s Irish-born parents, including brown breads and scones baked in house and a full Irish breakfast served all day." - Sam Nelson

The Best Restaurants In Avondale

"Wolfhound seems like a typical Chicago bar with TVs and ever-flowing beer, but it’s actually a bonafide Irish pub. Couples in the back split a full Irish breakfast (available all day) of tender bangers and rashers, while a solo reader at the bar can sip an expertly double-poured pint of Guinness. There’s usually a strong crowd of regulars any day of the week, but expect even more people sharing meaty black pudding pizza when there’s a rugby match on, or during their live music Tuesdays when fiddlers and pipers take over the front fireplace. Google
There are many reasons to come here: They offer two versions of an Irish breakfast (full and half), which are solid. There are Irish beers (as well as excellent Chicago brews) on tap and Irish sports on the telly. And their homemade scones are outstanding, maybe the best authentic British scones in the city (and it sure doesn’t hurt that they come three to an order).

I went for dinner at about 7:30pm on a Thursday night. We found the sign to seat ourselves and we sat and were greeted and received our waters. Our actual waitress did not check on us too often, as we were tucked in that corner of the bar. However, other staff checked in on us and made sure our waters were full. This place had one of my favorite burgers and espresso martinis. I enjoyed my dinner of the braised pork shoulders. The potato’s and broccoli were warm and flavorful. I really enjoyed all of the food and drinks. This place would be perfect if service was just a bit better.

Google
Super cute place. Everyone was so friendly there, and they thanked my friend and I for coming to check them out for restaurant week. Everything we ate was soo delicious. I definitely want to come back to try the sandwiches as well. The sausage rolls were perfect, and so were the scones. The veggie quiche had a lovely crispy crust. The chicken and waffles with the togarashi maple honey was by far the best I have ever eaten with the perfect amount of spice that was definitely a pleasant surprise. Do not even get me started on the Banana Foster French toast. Let's just I wanted to go home for a nap since I ate it all. The trinity cupcake to finish it off. My only regret was not making my coffee an Irish one. I will be returning soon.

Google
I really enjoyed this Pub. I had excellent food. The chicken sandwiches were huge. The homemade chicken noodle soup was amazing with the brussel sprouts on the side and the service was delivered with a smile and kindness. I'll be back.

Google
I had an amazing time at this local Irish bar on Tuesday night! The lively Irish music set the perfect atmosphere, and I couldn’t get enough of the delicious pizza topped with savory Irish bacon. It was a night filled with great vibes and even better food!

Google
Loved the live music on Tuesday night! It’s a small place so I’d recommend a reservation. Even on a Tuesday evening the place completely filled up at 7:30, although there were some empty seats closer to 9. We had the cheese curds, chicken wrap and Irish Dog and everything was good! And two perfectly poured Guinnesses of course!

Google
Came here on a Tuesday night for the band playing traditional Irish music. Loved the music, the atmosphere of the bar and the food was excellent. Highly recommend.

Google
We waiting 20 minutes for our draft beer even though we were the only ones at the bar. The grilled cheese was wack… like a tiny sandwich with mostly crispy cheese to make it look impressive. The service was so weird, they gave us plates, and then took them away with our napkins, and then we didn’t have napkins with our food but couldn’t get anyone’s attention to ask. The place was cute but energy was off.

Yelp
Love the food & drinks at the Wolfhound! The scones on the brunch menu are delicious and the cheese curds and pizza on the dinner menu are amazing! The seasoning on the pizza is my favorite part. It's a thicker version of a thin crust pizza which I enjoy. Great service and atmosphere make the Wolfhound the perfect Irish bar!

Yelp
Lovely Irish pub and kitchen. Does the business in a delightfully authentic way without being forced. Forget your gluten-free. Don't look for almond milk.
google avatar

Yelp
WAY too much cheese on the pizza which is a pitty because the crust is so good and the overall garlic flavor is delicious. 5$ Guinness was also nice.

Yelp
Cute bar and friendly staff, but the service was painfully slow. It was not busy, as it was a Sunday afternoon just before 2, not quite lunch or dinner. After we ordered our food, it took 50 mins to come out. The fries were great, and the Fried Chicken Sandwich tasted good, but half the chicken was too thick that it overtook the sandwich. I appreciated the generous piece of chicken, but it didn't go well. Decent bar food if you're not in a hurry and in the area.

Yelp
Very good pizza. Pan-style (I think, or at least not thin crust so a little more chewy than crispy) and they put a healthy amount of cheese on it. The sauce is also very good, tastes like fresh marinara similar to Rao's / San Marzano and is slightly on the sweet side. I ordered takeout but saw they have a good happy hour with some food and drink deals.

Yelp
It's an Irish bar, having little Irish- it's a bar that serves food. We arrived and we're seated at a high top table, sprinkle lights cover the ceiling with loud music playing. We were greeted with enthusiasm- as we asked about what we should order or what was recommended we were told that you can't go wrong with anything on the menu; our handhelds are awesome, for an Irish bar our pizza is outstanding. We make everything in house. The excitement and confidence as the server / bar tender reviewed with us was real. We had ordered the spinach dip, fries and a pizza to start. Spinach dip was average, the chips were great though, a take on cool ranch Doritos, the fries needed salt, the aioli didn't save the day. Our server came back around 30 minutes later explaining that the kitchen was behind and the pizza would be out right away. 20 minutes later the pizza arrived. Soggy bottom average sauce cheese falling off because it was undercooked. He apologized. We had asked to place our order for our main entrees and additional cocktails. Chicken was just not good at all, it wasn't cooked enough for a crunch exterior, the cheese was overwhelming and the dill was overpowering. The French did didn't do any better. The meat missed the mark on seasoning, the cheese was soured bc of the combination of provolone and Swiss- there wasn't much of a balance of flavors at all. We placed an order for a few cocktails (none worth trying, bland and boring) and our second order never came ti the table - Pizza - even if it were cooked correctly, would have still missed a three star review. The sauce was off- blamed by the rush of food in the kitchen is an excuses that they forgot to place the order and rushed it. The restaurant portion had two tables full of 4 or less at this time. 7:30 reservation and leaving at 9:30 for a bar with food is too long in my opinion, several kinks that need to be addressed. When we were waiting for our check- we were told that another table had accidentally received our bill and paid it and left, they had asked us to then pay their bill which was less but also not ours. In a shady transaction that could have been avoided. That may be the biggest flaw in this entire evening.

Yelp
I've eaten here many times now. The owner is Irish, a firefighter, musician and has a passion for food. Everything is made from scratch down the the ketchup. The chicken sandwich, full Irish (all day) breakfast, chicken strips & cheese curds are my favs. They have a brunch menu on the weekend with home baked Irish soda bread and other goodies. I can't say no to their mimosas! I've recently tried the soups which were generous in size and the perfect winter warmer. They have different soups on rotation. I've also tried their late night menu which has delicious pizzas, the best sliders and more. All the staff are super friendly especially Emily who makes a great margarita! It's fairly easy to get street parking nearby. They have a good schedule of weekly entertainment (live Irish trad sessions, quizzes, drinks & food specials and other events). I think it's a good neighborhood place and definitely worth a try.

Yelp
Cool place; good vibe and a solid tap list. Some of the better bar food I've had. French dip sandwich was delicious and incredible fries

Yelp
Great place to watch a rugby game. The burger and fries were sooooo good! One of the best burgers I've had in a long time. Looking forward to going back!

Yelp
Great Pub! Had a fine meal and great cocktails ! Cool vibe with a very nice owner and employees! Chef and owner checked with us several times. Very attentive service!

Yelp
Nice hangout bar for sport or socializing. Good food, but they need to revamp their breakfast potatoes.

Yelp
Early dinner reservation during Restaurant Week--can't wait to go back!! Small space ( pretty loud at times) more high top tables with backless stools than traditional seating (would not bring a person with age or mobility issues unless guaranteed low seating). Super friendly and capable professional staff. Fantastic boozy cocktails- so tasty and beautiful ( even the Old Fashioned). Do not pass up the Wagyu sandwich ( smooth and soft with crisp fries)...or the Fried Brie ( even the hard pass on Brie person in our party loved it- especially as bite with cranberry chutney)..or the Apple tartin (warm and topped with silky ice cream).

Yelp
I just moved down the block and tried Wolfhound for the first time on Wednesday. My wife and I split the fried chicken sandwich and cheese curds which were both amazing, as well as the fries that came with the sandwich! It was pouring rain and there was a slight drip which was no bother to us at all but wanted to point it out so no one slipped. Brendan, the owner, came over to talk to us and comped us a round of beers, which was completely unnecessary but very much appreciated! He seemed very genuine and can tell that he takes pride in his restaurant. The waitresses there were also very sweet and talking in Irish accents, which Brendan told us were there for the summer from Ireland. It is very cute and cozy inside with lights strung about. I also saw that they have held some great events - Taylor Swift listening party, charity events, and high tea for Mother's Day and Christmas. I will definitely be back soon for brunch to try the Irish breakfast and hoping that they have the High Tea again! All around very happy to support great people and great food!

Yelp
Modern definition of a no frills neighborhood bar. Limited food and cocktail selection, nothing too special on either side. The Meridian was solid, perhaps a bit too heavy on the lemon/Italicus and lacking a little body, but a nice cocktail for an Irish pub. The food is a bit of a different story, ranging from incredibly salty/vinegary brussels leaves, to an elote dip that was a tale of two dishes. The roasted corn relish was delicious, fresh, and bright, while the vegetables and mango underneath the salty chips were absolutely drenched in vinegar to the point where you can still taste it a day later. The spinach and artichoke dip had pretty flavor and nice stringy cheese, but was about as soupy as I've seen, served, oddly enough, with wonton crackers. The staff/bartender are very friendly, it's a really inviting atmosphere where people are quick to strike up a conversation. However, it might be best served for a quick pre- or post-dinner drink, rather than your destination for a full dining experience.

Nicholas I.

Yelp
Our neighborhood spot. Full Irish brekkie any time? You got it. Pizza? Hell yeah. The grilled cheese? I would climb a mountain for it. Drinks? Throw away your aunts espresso martini and try the Counselor. Far superior. Bartenders are personable and the live Irish music every Tuesday night is not to be missed.

Yelp
This place is a new find for my husband and I, and I think this place will make it into the regular circuit. The food here is really really good, i had the chicken sandwich and my husband had the burger. Everything is very high quality and cooked to perfection. We will be back!

Mara D.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place, no one infront to greet you no sign that says "please wait to be seated or seat yourself" apparently there was only the bartender that was waiting on everyone :\. I did see the chef come out from the back to help which I've never seen before. He was very nice though! It took forever to get my food and drinks, the food was ok I got the burger it was dry the chicken sandwich was pretty good, cheddar broccoli was bland too, cheese curds were super greasy and almost choked on the cheese the prices A bit pricey I was honestly ready to walk out. I saw people coming in and waiting for at least10min for someone to look at them and to be seated they looked super mad too (I felt their pain) the owner came later on and started helping he was pleaseant . The ambiance is chill I mean I'll go back if I have nowhere else to go.

John L.

Yelp
Decent drinks, average bar food. Would recommend for neighborhood spot but wouldn't go out of your way

Jeanne S.

Yelp
Ever since this placed opened, I wanted to go and tonight was the night! The owner greeted me as we walked in and the bartender took our order. By looking around the place, you can tell that there was a lot of excellent thought put into it. It's comfortable and cozy, and seating not too tight. But the food? All I can say is awesome. The fries were some of the best I've ever had and the portion generous for an appetizer. My friend had the chicken dish and I swear he was ready to almost about to lick the plate. After I try the brunch, this will probably become my neighborhood favorite, and if you don't live down the block, make the trip. Wolfound is definitely worth it.

Katrina J.

Yelp
The grilled cheese that they make is the best grilled cheese that you will ever have in your entire life. Sorry, Mom. This is it. Go and try that. It's amazing.

Deirdre K.

Yelp
Very funny atmosphere, great food and great service. The owner was particularly attentive. Thank you, Brendan. I brought a party of eight in on Saturday and we all had a very nice time would definitely recommend and will definitely go back

Great food and cool atmosphere! Really enjoyed the spinach dip and pizza! Service was quick too :)

Yelp
Had a really delicious brunch there this morning with friends and my 11 year old daughter. We got a great seat in the front by the open air garage style window. We ordered the mini sausage rolls, vegetarian quiche, waffles with fruit, and mimosas. All items were amazing - even the mimosas!! However they made it was better than most mimosas I've had. The mini sausage rolls and quiche both had amazing buttery pastry crusts that we were told are made in house. The portion sizes were perfect. My daughter enjoyed her waffles with fruit. It also came with a very tasty blackberry compote. I will be returning for brunch in the near future. This place was a gem!

Yelp
Came here for my partners birthday with the whole family. After we were seated, we were told that a lot of pizza orders came in and it would be a bit. No problem with that at all. An hour and 10 min later we're all still waiting and I went to ask what was going on. I was told that 3 members of the kitchen staff were not there and the manager was doing the cooking. If you had told us that from the beginning, we would have gone somewhere else. Again, no problem. I ordered the Bistro Filet, was not a $22 dish. The Brussel sprouts were smaller than my pinky nail, the mashed potatoes were loose and meh, the meat was over cooked, that said the gravy was good. Not worth it in my opinion and not worth a second chance.

Yelp
Great place for beers and some great food. I have been here for brunch twice and have enjoyed it with friends. They were great for lingering and socializing.

Yelp
We had artichoke dip, pizza, chicken sandwich(huge!). The food is on point. The team here makes their own ingredients. Drew made me a special drink, took my likes and mix a drink Bang! We will be back

Yelp
First time in this spot! The staff was very friendly and welcoming! For brunch I had the Griddle Burger and Fries. I will definitely try the dinner menu next time!

Yelp
Love this new addition to our Avondale neighborhood! The food is always delicious and they offer a solid beer/cocktail menu. We can't wait to head back soon to check out their mid week happy hour specials. Do yourself a favor and start with the cheese curds.
google avatar

Yelp
Quickly becoming one of our favorite local spots! We tried the chicken sandwich and pizza last night. The chicken sandwich was absolutely delicious, and the pepperoni pizza was pretty solid. I really like their crust. We had the pork shoulder and cheese curds last time, and they were awesome too. Solid beer list and great draughts. Wife really enjoyed her cocktail too. Awesome service and staff! All around, a new gem in the neighborhood! We look forward to our next visit.

Yelp
If you have not already checked this place out you are missing out!!! Super cozy, warm and welcoming both in aesthetics and staffing. Great drafts( kuddos on the Magners!) A LONG awaited neighborhood place with great service ( Brian, much appreciated for the care and attention!) Check it out , you won't be disappointed! Soup is great!

Yelp
This place is such a gem and such a needed addition to the Avondale neighborhood! They just opened up in November. The quality of their food is outstanding!! They outsource their bread but aside from that everything is made in house or brought in from local farms! I called right after their kitchen closed and asked if they could make a pizza and they kept their kitchen open just to make it for me. That was super sweet and everyone there was so happy, so kind and so helpful. Their pizza is SO GOOD. Their crust is chewy and crispy and the flavor it delicious. Awesome amount of cheese and pepperoni. Not your standard boring bar pizza. I envision this space becoming a staple and being around for a long time.

Yelp
I had been eager to try this place for quite some time, as it looked like an nice spot in the neighborhood. I wanted to like it so badly, but almost every aspect of it was incredibly disappointing. When I sat down, I was in a booth that looked like it was clean at a first glance, however, there was a lot of leftover food crumbs left underneath my table and the booth and was greasy, as if it didn't get wiped down. With COVID still being a big concern, you would think they would clean this place a bit more. When I stepped off to the women's restroom, the back of the restaurant had the scent of cigarettes and weed coming from the back area. It was unpleasant. The bartender came over and took our order, but seemed very much in a rush. I understand the restaurant is busy, but I felt rushed in ordering. My friend and I ordered the spinach artichoke dip to start. It took a while to come out. The texture of the dip was absolutely bizarre and had a floury aftertaste to it, which isn't like any spinach artichoke dip I've tried or am used to. We then ordered a pizza. They looked good from the photos that I had seen online. This ordeal took another HOUR to get to us, and at this point, I was frustrated and hungry. The pizza came out finally. It's topped with some dried herbs (I'm assuming oregano), which added such a unfortunate taste to the pizza itself. The dried herbs make it feel cheap, as if I was at a buy by the slice greasy pizza spot. Why not use fresh herbs or don't use that? Why not mention it on the menu? I wish I had known that came on top automatically. I have to add that while I was sitting and waiting for the food, our water was hardly getting refilled. To be fair we were drinking a lot of it because they didn't turn the AC on in the restaurant for some reason even though it was a 90 degree day. It was humid and uncomfortable. Some tables had large bottles of water, but we didn't which was weird. The owner, I assume, and the female bartender with curly blonde hair seemed like they were too busy flirting at times to pay attention to our table and some others. I was truly disappointed with every aspect of this experience. But this experience alone has absolutely turned me away from every giving this establishment my money ever again. Save your money, and your time, and go to Trespasada instead. They have AC too!

Yelp
I REALLY wanted to like this place. My mom and I came for dinner. We are Irish and all my uncles are Chicago Fireman, so obviously we wanted to love this place. They highly recommended this place. We are all frequent advocates of Irish bars in the local neighborhood. Here's how it went down....Our server, Drew, was really nice but literally had no idea what was going on. We ordered an app-he forgot to put it in. Had to ask about it twice. We wanted a meal-he didn't come back to ask how our app was or ask what we wanted for a main course. He literally just ignored us. When he finally came back to get our order-30 minutes later we were starving. You would think it can only go up from here right? WRONG. We are literally still sitting here as I write this. After over an hour we asked where our meal was. Me and my mom are splitting a meal that would Max take 30 minutes to make. Our server comes back over we ask-get just checking when the food will be up. He goes to ask the kitchen and turns out he forgot to put it in. Then thinks everything's all good because he will comp our meal. I don't understand forgetting about a whole table enough to not put in any meal item they ordered. Isn't that your job? Wow. Honestly so disappointed. There is also a fruit fly issue. Saw the great reviews. The owner did come over apologized and (after we finally got our food) the food was decent. Because the nice owner came over-I added 2 stars. I must also mention that the music choices are beyond amazing here. Absolute banger of a playlist.

Emily M.

Yelp
I took my mom here for Mother's Day high tea, and it was so lovely! The owners couldn't be nicer and the food was incredible- everything made in house! I look forward to coming back and ordering off the regular menu. Thank you for making the day so special!
google avatar

Wally K.

Yelp
The food was good, the service was not. It took 25 minutes for the bartender/waiter to take our order and then a 30 minute wait for our breakfast to arrive. Only 9 other customers in the restaurant. Either understaffed or under managed. I like to support small businesses, but I won't be back. I'm giving 4 stars because the food was good and I want to see them survive.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Best neighborhood spot. Great food and drink selection with friendly staff. The Brussel sprout leaves are a close tie with the cheese curds for apps. Can't go wrong with their pizzas either!
google avatar

Glenn K.

Yelp
Great pints and food! Staff is very friendly and helpful finding a place to sit when busy.
google avatar

Ken U.

Yelp
Nice addition to the Avondale bar scene. I've been here twice in the past few months: each time the staff has been great, and the food has been solid! The only knock I have so far has been wait times on the food. It's taken extremely long for certain meals (like the fish & chips on a Friday), but the waitress we had was very accommodating and gave us a round of drinks. Will definitely be back based on the service and quality of food.

Emmett F.

Yelp
The Wolfhound is quickly becoming one of my favorite bar / restaurants in Chicago. I've gone there for brunch with the family, Happy Hour, and nights out, and it always delivers. The Full Irish breakfast is my favorite I've had in Chicago, and they pour a great pint of Guinness. Brendan (the owner) and staff are so friendly and genuinely interested in making sure you have a good experience.

Jose M.

Yelp
I got there when the restaurant was transferring to lunch, so it was closed, but luckily the person serving us was a great dude and funny!

Yelp
Wonderful food reasonable prices. In the city but found on street parking 1 block away on a Friday night. Jumping joint.

Yelp
Im actually sitting here right now and just finished an awesome smash burger! Fries were on point as well! It will be a regular stop for me! Staff was friendly and made sure my glass was always full!

Yelp
Good food, good booze, good people. Can't get much better than that for a new local watering hole!

Yelp
Awesome neighborhood restaurant with solid beer menu and amazing craft cocktails! Super cozy atmosphere, with a fireplace and gorgeous lighting. Friendly and helpful staff serving up delicious food and drinks - so far I've loved the pizza, smash burger, and chicken sandwich. can't wait to try more! Wolfhound is a great addition to the neighborhood!

Maureen N.

Yelp
What a great find! Super friendly from the minute we walked in. great selection of drinks and cocktails. the Brussel sprout appetizer was absolutely out of this world - lemon flavor added such a great taste. we had a salad, ai just sandwich and steak sandwich - all were delicious. Fries were crispy goodness. The young owner, Brendan, came over and chatted for a bit - very personable and committed to creating a positive experience. Will definitely be back, they do Irish music "sessions" on Tuesday night - good reason to return.

Greg N.

Yelp
The burger and fries were both really good! Also, enjoyed the selection of beer and cocktails. Great spot to grab a few drinks with friends!

Yelp
Very friendly staff, good selection in the bar, and great food! Will definitely be back

Yelp
We came into this awesome little spot for dinner and thrilled we did. The service is terrific. The guys running the place are super efficient and attentive. Inside is warm and cozy - fabulous winter restaurant. Here's the best part: Their grilled cheese is what dreams are made of. It comes with a side of tomato sauce and the sandwich is not too big and if you're a fan of melted somewhat crispy cheese that oozes out the side of a sandwich this spot is epic.
