"This restaurant occupies the former family home of the German architect Ernst Zillers, who came to Athens to design some of its public buildings, fell in love with the city and remained here for the rest of his life. The building, which is situated next to the Greek Orthodox cathedral and has now been converted into a hotel (Zillers Boutique Hotel), boasts a rooftop terrace and multi-purpose Roof Garden with fine view of the cathedral and the Acropolis. The Zillers restaurant is only open in the evening and chef Vasilis Roussos offers two tasting menus: Synecdoche and Synthesis, both with creative dishes of traditional Greek influence and touches of international flavour. One standout dish was the Prawn Valley, a refreshing combination of raw prawns with a delicate tomato sauce, bergamot and kumquat that will definitely leave a lasting memory. "Right in the centre of Athens, opposite the cathedral and at the foot of the Acropolis, this charming boutique hotel’s rooftop hides an enchanting terrace set in a verdant garden with an unbeatable view; during dinner, the Parthenon’s temples gradually light up, creating a mood of great mystery. Having clocked up experience working for Pierre Gagnaire and at Azurmendi, chef Pavlos Kiriakis took the helm in 2019, and his efforts have since been rewarded with a MICHELIN star. "The Zillers Athens Hotel A neoclassical building in Plaka thoughtfully renovated into a boutique hotel, the ZIllers has ten guest rooms and a rooftop restaurant and bar. The building was designed by Ernst Ziller, a German architect whose work can be seen all around Greece, notably at Athens’ National Theatre, Presidential Mansion, and the Goulandris Museum of Cycladic Art. The original high ceilings, wood floors, and wrought iron-balconies have been retained and refreshed with a modern minimalist decor. While value priced, rooms with atrium views can be dark and Acropolis views are worth the upgrade. Rates include breakfast served in room or on the rooftop, book ahead for dining at other times as it is popular with locals. The contemporary Greek menu might include shrimp with buffalo milk couscous or sea bass in a dill and lime foam, plus innovative desserts like Greek coffee mousse with olive oil jelly. Location is also faultless, overlooking the Athens Cathedral, and a five-minute walk from Monastiraki or Syntagma Square."
