The Best Portland Restaurants for Large Groups | Eater Portland

"This food hall is perpetually popular for casual meetups — the patio is large, with covered seating available for when it rains; the food options are varied, from fried chicken to Korean ramyun to vegan pizza; and the onsite bar’s drinks are strong and interesting. Note that things can get a little busy on the weekends, though there’s usually enough space between the indoor area and the outdoor patio." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

The Best Restaurants on East 28th Avenue in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Anchored by Sari’s rib-eye bibimbap with gochujang and burdock root and Basilisk’s now-legendary fried chicken sandwich, this industrial food hall also features vegan Detroit-style pizza and a bar with an extensive whiskey selection. The centrally located communal seating area is ideal for friends and family wanting to choose different dishes and gather at both indoor and outdoor tables. As a bonus, it’s also dog-friendly." - Thom Hilton

10 Best Food Trucks in Portland, OR | Condé Nast Traveler

"With The Zipper, a cluster of micro-restaurants in a former used-car parking lot in Northeast Portland, Guerilla Development (the same company behind The Ocean pod, down the street) has proved that even the tiniest sliver of vacant land can be put to use. Paydirt, a popular neighborhood bar, anchors the pod; folded in are also four micro-restaurants serving up a worldly—and mostly fried—array of bites. Chow down on tall fried chicken sandwiches and Kool-Aid soft serve at Basilisk; or, for some of the most creative Asian food in town, head to Wares, next door: The mini-spinoff of Chef Joanna Ware’s acclaimed restaurant Smallwares serves up dishes like steaming bowls of kimchi stew with Korean rice cakes and fried cheese curd risotto." - Danielle Centoni

Google
amazing bar with good beer, selection and amazing cocktails, especially if you like whiskey and an old-fashioned. Lots of really solid food spots. My favorite chicken sandwich, great vermicelli bowls and bahn mi sandwiches. The tacos and burritos are great too.

Great atmosphere. Good food choices. Parking can be tricky so you might have to park a few blocks away. Lots of open space and tables.

Google
We love this place. It's one of our favorite go-to joints in Portland. With 4 different food court choices, from friend chicken to pizza to Korean and Tacos, you really can't go wrong. Grab a beer from Pay Dirt, then pick your food of choice, and then sit either inside at one of the large tables or sit under the covered patio next to gas fire pits. Bus your own tables, which means pick up after yourself. This place is a great place to meet friends and take none locals to show them another cool venue in Portland. Parking can be difficult, so part on the side street.

09/28/16: 4.5 out of 5 - Wednesday running group wanted try something different so we decided to go to The Zipper. Here we were enchanted by Basilisk. The menu is simple and the food is tasty and the staff were nice. What more can one ask for. What was amazing was how evenly the chicken was cooked. The seasoning was excellent and the chicken was moist. The slaw was good but a little messy. So try this place out once and decide for yourself. This was a winner for all of us.

The Zipper is one of my favorite places in town. Beautiful. The new construction nearby is gorgeous. Great sunset spot with a nice selection of food options.

Google
Come for the drinks at Paydirt, stay for the food, and the have more drinks at Paydirt. Every few months , my partner and I go to Paydirt for an old fashioned roulette (or two), and while there, enjoy one of the amazing food options that are there. Rain or shine, it is a great place to visit for food and drinks.

Good spot with ample seating and a variety of food and drink options. I love Boxcar Pizza!

Google
Very cool place with a bunch of different places to eat and outdoor seating with fire pits. The chicken sandwich was probably the best thing we had. Ramen was kind of bland. The bimBipbap smelled sooo good, but it was bland tasting too which was a little disappointing. Also tried the burrito from the Mexican place which wasn’t that great.

Yelp
This is a great place for meeting with friends and hanging out. It's very open with lots of seating. It's mostly outdoors, but they do have fire pits. They have 5 food places to choose from and a full bar.

Yelp
Well from what I understand, this is simply the name of the food court which the restaurants located here share. Nothing fancy, but its open design makes this place feel much larger than it really is. When I came here, I was my wife's guest for her boss's retirement party. He wanted to drink some fine whiskeys with his work group. But I was more interested in Korean fried chicken (Sari) and Dan Dan fries (Basilisk). It was a great experience overall. This dining space will be much better (and livelier) when the weather warms up and they open up the bay doors.

Yelp
could be a cool place, but dangerously high noise levels, employees here are likely sustaining permanent hearing loss. I've been taking SoundMeter readings throughout the evening. Tops at an incredible 102dB; *average* at 87dB, which is violating OSHA workplace regulations.

Yelp
Baseless chicken salad filling...had to take half to go. Nice picnic tables outside. Downside de parking two blocks away.

Yelp
Friendly staff. Vegan pizza was a bit heavy. I'd go again. Friendly staff. Vegan pizza was a bit heavy. I'd go again. Friendly staff. Vegan pizza was a bit heavy. I'd go again.

Yelp
We were visiting Portland and love all of their food truck hubs, but the Zipper really won us over. A great date night spot with seating inside and out. Love that I could order Pho while my partner could order tacos

Princess S.

Yelp
Super family friendly, covered inside dining. Multiple dining options, pizza, tacos, two bars for the adults and a few games for the kids. Zoltar makes a guest appearance, and vegan pizza is also available. The staff is super helpful. Any questions just ask. Great outdoor dining space, not much parking.

Yelp
Met here while some friends were in from out of town. We had a bit of a crowd and The Zipper was the perfect spot for our rowdy group! Full bar at The Paydirt and several food options including some vegan choices which are always appreciated. We got bevy's at Paydirt and some bi bim bop at Sari. Many of our group got the chicken sandos which were HUGE and I need to come back for tacos. Fun food court, great for groups, will return.

Yelp
The tables in the community seating area are filthy. It looks like they haven't been cleaned in days. There are also several spots with water on the floor. A caution sign has been put up, but no effort to clean up the water. Very off putting!

Yelp
This is somewhat like a food cart pod. I've only been here after nights of tennis with some great people and always had a great time. Finding parking right in front at busy times is unlikely, but you can park across the street. There are long benches, some in the shade and some in the open. A fireplace. 5-6 businesses dishing out delicious food. I think it is fairly clean too. Try it!

Jennifer A.

Yelp
Lots of great food options at this food pod, including fried chicken and deep dish (gluten free available), vegan pizza. I was surprised how great the cheese and veggie sausage tasted. Lots of outdoor seating.

V S.

Yelp
Unlike another person who posted, I found the common area in The Zipper to be clean. Each table has a clean/dirty marker, and there are tubs everywhere for patrons to use in bussing their tables. I like the food offered in The Zipper (can get vegetarian or vegan) and plan to return.

Yelp
The Zipper is a cool hip food court with a couple of restaurants and a decent amount of indoor and outdoor seating. At The Zipper, you'll find mexican food, fried chicken, ramen, and some other cuisines so there's generally something for everyone. If you sit outside, there's even a fire pit. Parking can be tough to find since there is limited street parking, but this place is worth a visit to just casually hang and great a meal and some drinks!

Yelp
I've been meaning to go to the Zipper for a good long while, so I jumped on the opportunity on NYE when I decided it was time to give Basilisk a shot. All the restaurants have their own entrances to the outside world, but share a food hall in the style of a cafeteria. The place is oddly shaped because of the weird block it lives in on Sandy, but they made great use of the space. At 2:30pm on a Monday (mind you, NYE), it was about half full, but there was still plenty of room. All of the restaurants seemed to have a little seating in their separate areas as well. I want to go back to try Wares!

Yelp
Great spot to grab food and drinks while enjoying the weather. This place gives me the "LA" vibe as if I'm down in LA. Definitely would recommend one to stop by here for food and drinks as there are several restaurants in this plaza as well as a bar, allowing you to bring your drink out to the large front patio

Yelp
5 stars for environment, 3 stars for service, & 2 stars for taste. Awesome summery outdoor seating away from traffic, with charming evening camp fire. Great for groups. I recommend beers or simple mixes here because their cocktails are actually terrible. I took 2 sips of the big pink at Paydirt before setting it aside. Tried the ramen from next door (they don't serve food), didn't finish that either, but still had such a lovely time with friends in their outdoor space.

Yelp
Love this place, all the food and drinks are great but please clean the tables in the main room more often they are always dirty with food and sticky. Especially with the illness going around would love to see more effort for cleanliness.

Yelp
Nice place to hang out. Nice bar with a couple of good eateries connected. Mainly saw: * beer * ramen * fried chicken sandwiches * happy people

Yelp
We visited the Zipper without even realizing it. We decided to try Basilisk and then realized it was part of a bigger collection of food places. The Zipper has a wide variety of food options, plenty of bench seating (both open air indoor and outdoor), and clean bathrooms. We visited a little before noon on a Saturday and it wasn't too busy and parking was a breeze. The bar area was closed so that may be why it was relatively quiet. I could see this being a very popular area for happy hour and in the evenings. 4 stars.

Scott E.

Yelp
Cool spot: great restaurants with a wide variety of food (fried chicken/falafel/Cajun/pizza), ample seating, fire pit, cocktail spot with a happy hour (every day before 7pm), etc. Also, family friendly during the day (haven't been at night but with the bar there I'm not sure). Plenty of street parking too. Really happy I brought some friends here today, they all thought it was cool as well. Definitely try to fried chicken at Basilisk

Yelp
Super casual, enjoyable place to grab a bite and a drink at the end of a long week. We had the fried chicken salad from Basilic which was great! Very tasty! Also had the fried, tempura battered kale and risotto cakes from Wares. Both were also superlative! (I miss small wares so much) Pros: Casual, vibrant and social. Bartenders were very knowledgeable about their GIANT whisky selection. Service was fast and friendly! Cons: Very crowded, loud, lack of variety of food choices, limited parking All in all it was an enjoyable experience and we will definitely be back!

Yelp
Groovy place to meet up w friends, instead of a rainy Foid Cart Plaza...or bring your Cart grub along!! Several bargain food options, pizza by the Slice; gyros, falafel. (ChickPea is closed Mon) healthy Mediteranean Dips; and more at Baselisk. Common dining room, or cozy up at The Paydirt Bar. $1 off craft taps during Happy Hour.

Yelp
Loving these communal concepts like The Ocean and now The Zipper. The Zipper has one up on The Ocean because of the extensive indoor communal area, where you can bring your food from one of many restaurants while also scoring drinks from Paydirt, a very cool bar that occupies one long end of the space. It's basically a few small restaurants with a large communal indoor seating area, bay doors that open to an outdoor area, and fire pit outside. An excellent concept that seems to work well in execution. I'm not 100% stoked on the food options (The Ocean wins on this front), however I really dig the fact that, unlike The Ocean, I can get my drinks from one place food from another, and sit with my friends in the middle. So everyone can get whatever they want and eat wherever they like. I believe at The Ocean you can take your food anywhere but drinks have to stay in each restaurant's specific outdoor area. Glad this new(ish) concept of a food-court filled with local restos and a great bar seems to be blossoming in PDX. I'll take as many more as you're willing to serve up!

Yelp
What the heck is an adult food court? Or food court for adults, or whatever? Simple. It's a room in between the bar and the little food shops with plastic picnic tables where you can take your stuff. I was expecting something more elaborate, but that's really all it is. Well, some restrooms and at least one TV. It showed the Blazers almost beat the Grizzlies. sigh There's no ATM. An inexplicable oversight. There's also tons of radiant heaters hanging from the ceiling and it felt like every MFing one of them was on. I was dying inside there. It's got some big garage doors that connect to outdoor seating and a gas firepit. S'cool. But if those doors are closed turn the dang thermostat down.
google avatar

Jeannie J.

Yelp
I think this is a pretty cool concept. Create a common space between a number of food outlets where you can enjoy trying several different places under one roof. It's great for groups with different diets/preferences. It's not fancy, and has medium size picnic style seating, but the outside fire pit area will be cool when the weather is clear. The prices were reasonable, and the options good. As you would expect in this type of dining, you buss your own tables and order at the individual vendor. They do deliver your meal to the table. You can purchase alcoholic beverages from the on premises bar. I plan to go back to sample more of the menus!

Ani A.

Yelp
Visited the Zipper last night to check out Sari. Although the fire pits were rolling outside, it was still far too cold to sit outside. Indoors seemed nearly as cold, with dim lighting. Not cozy at all and I ate with my jacket on because i was so cold. If you feel like being cold and uncomfortable while eating, this is the place for you.

Yelp
Unfortunately, Basalisk was closed on Sunday evening (for some event they catered or something). We ordered from another part (Small Wares, I think it's called) we weren't in love with the food. I hated mine. I had one bite and that was it for me. Everything was heavily seasoned...too much so. Luckily, I was with great people and it was a gorgeous night. Aside from that, I probably won't go there again.
google avatar

Richard G.

Yelp
Cool place! I like the mix of tenants and the various cuisines. The dining area is casual but convivial.
google avatar

Debbie Y.

Yelp
Love this place! Such a cool concept. Today we went for lunch which we do about once a month if not more often. So excited that "Wares" has just joined their collection of very unique restaurants. We were huge fans of Smallwares. I ordered the vegetarian pho which was fantastic, just the right size filled with wonderful fresh ingredients, we shared the fried kale which we use to love at Smallwares. My husband had the bao and devoured it. All of the food was so good and the service was impeccable. My husband also loves the chicken sandwich at Basilisk, Chickpea is also great. The guys at paydirt are so cool and always have unique cocktails along with an amazing beer list. And as a side note I also get my nails done at Fingerbang....awesome! Would highly recommend every business in this complex.
google avatar

Melissa L.

Yelp
LOVE IT. ChickpeaDX is serving up killer felafel plates, and Pay Dirt's slinging awesome drinks. I haven't tried the pizza joint there, but I'm guessing it's good too. The indoor seating is good for winter, and the patio with fire pit is awesome in the summer. I would love to see more buildings around town with this concept

Dennis J.

Yelp
Very family friendly atmosphere, plenty of tables outside to enjoy your meal during a beautiful Sunny day in Portland. I'm partial to the chicken from Basilisk.
google avatar

Josh F.

Yelp
The place is a nice complex of restaurants the place is very loud even in the outdoor seating areas but has a nice variety. I would probably bring friends but I dont think i would be back by myself.

Tina W.

Yelp
Ramen wasn't that good. Their oher 2 restaurants were closed at 9:45pm on a Saturday- a fried chicken place and a pizza place. Ordered two Ramen dishes. Were served them at separate times. Bartender at Paydirt was stereotypically hipster-stuck up, zero personality, and looked rather put off that we were eating at his bar even though he wasn't busy... which is supposed to be one of the draws to this place, that u can take anything anywhere. Decent dj spinning - but sounds AWFUL with blown speakers. Rather disappointed esp since we Uber-ed it here. Won't be back.
google avatar

Kate B.

Yelp
Fun spin on a min-mall. Unique businesses coming together to create a unique experience. What's not to like? And Paydirt is fantastic!

Chucknonverbal ..

Yelp
I really want to love Paydirt, but the obnoxious speedmetal music they often play keeps us away. No way around it. 4/20: They have pledged to change the music and I think the problem is fixed now!!

George M.

Yelp
Great lunch at the falafel place-all fresh ingredients, quick service; will go back. This easily beats many of the established middle-eastern restaurants around Portland.
