Yelp
"So, a Filipino girl & a European girl walk into an bar..." er...make that an authentic, hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurant...and what happens??? The male owner (we presume) starts pointing at our feet and yelling at us in Vietnamese (apparently, they had just mopped). Yeup. It's THAT authentic. No politeness needed here. We came here to eat, and we knew our place on the totem pole. It's a privilege to eat here, not a right.
Came here with fellow Yelpers to finally try what was deemed the holy grail of Banh Mis. None of us were fluent in Vietnamese, but with some finagling and random pointing at the menu, we were able to order our sandwiches quickly.
I got the small Thit Nuong (grilled pork banh mi). The french bread is the size of a foot long, though narrower and it contained grilled pork, a variety of veggies, jalapenos, and the infamous sweet "mayo" sauce. I've had banh mi's around Houston, and I'd have to say that what makes Thim Hing really stand out is their sauce. It's sweeter, and more flavorful than other places.
Next time, I'd like to order the bahn mi with extra meat and extra sauce, but it appears I have to first learn how to speak broken Vietnamese before I can do so. I had Justine H. order one for my friend who came late, and he thoroughly enjoyed it.
For banh mi on this side of town, I'd definitely pick this joint over the plethora of Vietnamese restaurants. However, for "good-enough" banh mi, I'd probably stick to Givrals in town for convenience.
