Coffee Shops in the West Village | Eater NY

"The jury is still out whether coffee helps you think better or not (some say it only makes you edgy and nervous), but this sprawling location — with tables deep, deep inside — clearly believes it. This is the public library of coffee bars, and though the coffee didn’t make much of an impression on me, it’s a great place to meet someone or just sit and ponder the world’s dilemmas." - Robert Sietsema

Google
Lovely ambience where most people seem to be working online. The food is good but the service could have been better. I had to ask for knife to cut my bagel and another knife to go with the avocado toast.

Google
This place was oppressively loud on a Thursday afternoon at about 4pm. If you enjoy sipping your coffee with music blaring and people shouting at each other so they can be heard over the blaring music, then by all means come and "relax" here.

I’ve been eating breakfast burritos at Think Coffee but never before at this location. I was going to run my errands and today my husband and I decided to visit this location around 9:20am on Sat morning. There were only a couple of people in the shop and no big line before or after us. We ordered a bunch of stuff for breakfast. The drip coffee was not ready until we reminded the person to pour it. Muffin was not also ready so we had to remind her again. We asked the counter if she needs our name to pick up our burrito and she said they will call you. I found 10 minutes later two of the burritos were sitting on the counter and they did not even call to pick up the burrito. They just left two burritos on the counter. We just went there and picked it up. We ordered the same burrito. My husband’s burrito was full of egg and potato whereas mine was filled up only 80%. Both burrito’s potatoes were undercooked while I was keep thinking this burrito is a little bit different than what I used to have at think coffee locations. I decided to ask to the kitchen that the potato is a little undercooked and ingredients are not filled enough. I had a conversation with the person who cooked the food and eventually she said I ate almost half and she’s not willing to make it again. I wanted to let the business owner know about the workers who don’t really care about customer service.

Google
A Spacious cafe with nice ambiance, promot service and supporting local artists (some wall paintings were for sale). Too bad soy milk was not available. Matcha Latte was OK. But one small bathroom for such big place is not enough. And it drastically contrasts with a pleasant ambiance of the cafe (no mirror, no hook for a purse, super dim and vandalized with political graffitis).

Google
Pretty cool spot in the neighborhood. It’s a lot bigger than it look when walking in. You don’t expect a coffee shop in this area to be so big. It has a large back space with outlets available. Although I do not go back there because it is kind of dark (my camera does a pretty good job of brightening dark spaces). I guess if you like mood lighting, it’s a good spot to sit. A lot of people working here all the time. Good coffee.

Google
Couldn’t. Find 2 empty seats because there were those using two seats. One for them and the other for their computer bags. Do they even know what Cappuccino is?? Terrible! My wife and I took a sip out of it and spit it out. Threw it out and went across the street to Starbucks. Plenty of other places to go for coffee!

Google
I think Think Coffee is just a tad larger than it was when I first came here. The cafe appears to have quadrupled in size. It now offers much more seating and free wifi. In addition the Think brand has expanded with a few more locations. Aside from selling a full range of coffees, they also offer cider, salads, sandwiches and coffee beans. During this visit I ordered a cafe con leche. It was not as good as the cup I previously had here. Seemed a bit on the bitter side this time. All in all I would return and try them again due to the cleanliness, great service and tranquility provided.

Google
This place was awesome! It’s the only think coffee that I’ve been able to easily find a table to sit and work. The espresso is great. I had a really satisfying chai gf muffin. I think the only drawback was that I kept getting kicked off the wifi and I didn’t see too many electrical outlets. Other than that, the amount of available tables more than made up for it.

Yelp
I decided to stop in for breakfast yesterday and was glad I did! When I arrived there was a short line but it moved quickly. The person who took my order was very friendly and even recommended I order a bagel sandwich and add smoked salmon instead of ordering the classic NYC bagel sandwich to save a few dollars. I was originally going to order that without toppings (just wanted lox and cream cheese), so I really appreciated his recommendation! My breakfast sandwich was delicious and came with plenty of fresh, sliced lox and cream cheese. They also have a nice selection of pastries, so I decided to order a lemon zest donut. It was perfectly fluffy and had a nice lemon flavor without being too overpowering. Also, love that the music isn't loud! So many coffee shops blare the music making it difficult to work or make calls. I'll keep this spot in mind the next time I'm in the neighborhood.

Yelp
It all started like a fairy tale... a young man at the register took my order. He fully understood how customer service works. After a very courteous transaction, the friendly man handed me my delightful pastry and directed to me to the barista counter, where I would find my steamed, slightly frothy, whole milk based espresso beverage, upon it's completion. Then it turned into a nightmare. After a few minutes, one of the two employees huddled at the espresso station called out my drink, and then they both immediately retreated with peals of laughter. By the time I arrived to collect my order, some 6 seconds later, they had both fully disappeared into the back kitchen, but their laughter was still audible. Instead of the slightly foamy, 160 degree, whole milk-based espresso drink that I ordered, I found what could only be described as a weak hot chocolate that got dumped into a cup of espresso rinse water, a weak slick of foam covering 10% of the surface. Trash, with a side of open mockery. This is my new favorite story to tell everyone; DON'T GO HERE, Thanks, ladies. I'm not sure what I did to deserve that, but now the feeling is mutual.

Yelp
Great little spot on 8th with seating. Perfect for catching up with friends or doing a little online work. Great service. Polite and professional staff. Across from a Starbucks and I think it's a more authentic cafe experience. I'd recommend.
google avatar

Iris F.

Yelp
Came here only bc it was raining and I needed a place to work asap since the Starbucks across the street was full. Don't think I'd come back again bc wifi was really spotty and drinks were really small for the price. I got a matcha latte for $6.50 after tax and it was tiny and wasn't that good either. There is a bathroom for customers to use, although a bit crusty. One pro is that there is a ton of workspace though bc they have a huge area with tables in the back!
google avatar

Audra B.

Yelp
Saddest avocado toast I've ever seen in my life. Tasted and looked so bland. Cute place though
google avatar

Riata B.

Yelp
No internet connection. Kindly asking the barista if it's better in another spot or if they can reset was really rudely met with a "not my problem" reaction. Don't come here if you need to be productive in any way.
google avatar

Dayna R.

Yelp
This was the only place open before 10 AM and I was looking for a hot drink and to escape the cold. I got an almond milk turmeric latte and it was delicious and had the perfect amount of spice to it. The music was great and provided a really nice place to relax before beginning a day of sightseeing and walking around.
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
I was at Think Coffee - 8th today and enjoyed my coffee and oatmeal raisin cookie. Suddenly a small child was riding his scooter from the front of Think Coffee to the back of this coffee house. This should not have been allowed. The employees should have told his ignorant parents he can't ride his scooter here. He could have caused an accident. I hope I don't see this again.

Sharon S.

Yelp
They gave me some bad lemonade and wouldn't exchange it for something else or give me a credit.
google avatar

Richard P.

Yelp
I am concerned that the caffeine content is likely to be more than 3x that of Starbucks per unit of volume (per ounce). I felt jittery after finishing a 16 ounce cup over the course of 2 hours. If I come back, and I plan to, cuz it's a really nice place to chill and the ceramic cups they serve drinks in are nice, I'll be sure to order decaf.
google avatar

Eric F.

Yelp
I come to NYC about once per year, and I always make a point of stopping here. As a portly middle-aged dad who works at a suburban Midwestern insurance company who is not a content creator, I don't feel nearly cool enough to hang out here, but the pastries and coffee are top-notch, and there is tons of room in the back to sit. Any coffee shop that offers ceramic mugs for one's beverage is ok in my book.
google avatar

Mo Z.

Yelp
Cold brew was great. Very good place to study and work - plenty of seating and very quiet.
google avatar

Gabi H.

Yelp
Politely told them that I ordered a medium latte not a small, as they gave me a small. Explained that I paid almost $8 for this iced latte to be medium. The barista said well sorry you ordered a small. Maybe I'm crazy but my bank account says I paid $8. ‍ also the WiFi doesn't work well a

Yelp
If you are looking for a different coffee shop to try, head over to Think. They have a lot of different coffees as well as pastries and some food options. This location in particular is quite large, which is a good thing as this neighborhood and a lot of coffee shops in general are often tight on space. This Think location is unusually large not only for the West Village but also NYC in general. You could meet 10 of you closest friends for coffee here on a busy weekday morning and it would be no problem. On to the coffee. I got myself an espresso. It was good, nothing too special, but not bitter, either. I am not sure I would come here specifically for the espresso with all the other options in the area, but I would come back if I was meeting a large group or coming for a meeting and needed to know that I will find somewhere to sit.
google avatar

Yelp
I've always been a fan of Think Coffee from back when I worked next door to the Mercer street location. Great atmosphere, and consistently good coffee! Now more than ever, we need to support independent businesses. There's a Starbucks across the street but just pretend that's not going on over there and go to Think instead!
google avatar

Ami Y.

Yelp
Some quick tips: - Lots of seating in the back. The picnic bench area closest to the bathroom and the left side of the room near the speakers are warmer, so if you want to avoid freezing your butt off, I recommend these two seating areas. The right side is the coldest. - Three berries square looked good so I got a piece. I was surprised how cold it felt, but it went incredibly well with the coffee.

Jesús P.

Yelp
Great coffee, better than average pastries, wonderful place to work, with wi-fi. And they also offer a rewards program which few coffee shops in NYC offer.
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
If you're looking for a coffee house to work from for the day, this is a great option. Especially in the winter. Their back room is large with ample seating. The WiFi is spotty though. The service is consistently friendly and dependable. And the overall space has a cozy, spacious coffee house vibe. The coffee, specialty drinks and food are all mediocre and somewhat pricey. You're getting charged for the location and name. Not the quality of ingredients or care in making things. It's corporate, assembly line product. But again, the back room.
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
I got an iced caramel latte with almond milk and an egg/cheese sandwhich oh my goodness so good, wish I could have it everyday!! Great place to study but a few downsides are no outlets (at least that I could find) so come with fully charged devices and it's a bit cold so bring a sweatshirt!

Vanessa C.

Yelp
Points for the solid amount of seating which is hard to come by in nyc but I always end up using my hotspot on my phone bc the Wi-Fi is no good
google avatar

Pedro R O.

Yelp
I had a delicious coffee americano with a pumpkin muffin while I had to do some quick work. The space was amazing and the girl at the counter was really nice.
google avatar

Adri P.

Yelp
The Spanish latte is life! Staff is nice here. Coffee is good and they're thoughtful about the origin of their products. 10% of after-tax $$ go to a local org in Chelsea. The food options are plentiful and, from what I've had, tasty. The only downside is that there can be a bit of a wait. And I've seen some confusion with orders (luckily not mine). But, it's usually worth it.
google avatar

Aradhna A.

Yelp
Came here because I had to quickly do some work urgently on the go and was in the area. Was very pleased by the copious amount of seating space, particularly in the back. However I wish they would hang some paintings or something because it was pretty dreary in the back. Was not enthused the lack of outlets. WiFi was great for work! Worked well for my needs. The coffee was nothing extraordinary. I also ordered the grilled cheese and it was also very average in quality. Overall, a great place if you need to stop quickly on your way somewhere else, but not a final destination!

Yelp
Think Coffee. A no-brainer. A friend said I had to stop by a Think Coffee and try it out. I happened to pass by a few of them, and finally was ready for a coffee. Inside was nice, there were a few small tables by the windows, and then some further in the back of the place. They have water available for free that you can fill up a small cup as well as wifi. It is a nice little place. They had a good selection of sugar, and various milks both dairy and non-dairy available too. It isn't the kind of place I would go with a large group of people, but if you are meeting one other person there, it is just fine.
google avatar

Traci H.

Yelp
Clean & quick stop for a cappuccino and an americano to start our day. Coffee was hot, freshly made. Employees weren't super friendly and it wasn't that early. Just ok.
google avatar

Jonathan N.

Yelp
Brief review for a brief encounter. I got my coffee to go because I wanted to drink coffee during my walk along The High Line. The barista and other staff was generally indifferent but definitely not cold or rude. The woman who took my order was welcoming and smiled. I ordered an iced latte with almond milk and it was pretty good. I've had better and I've certainly had worse. Price was okay pretty standard. While I got my drink to go, I did peak at the seating area and it looked pretty spacious. The napkins, straw, and sugar station (not sure what to call it). Was absolutely filthy tho. For reference, I went around 4pm on a weekday. All in all, decent experience. That being said, I wouldn't go out of my way for this coffee, especially considering the competition in the area.
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
Get the iced Spanish latte! It is sooooo good. The restroom line is long since they only have one restroom. Quiet vibe
google avatar

Will S.

Yelp
Nice establishment except usic was too loud to focus and there were no outlets to plug into. It was also uncomfortably warm inside. Recommend Rebel coffee a few blocks down. Plenty of outlets, and environment makes focusing and getting work done a lot easier.
google avatar

Jackie S.

Yelp
I've become a fan of Think Coffee over the years and have been to this location several times. It's always peaceful and quiet inside and I love coming just short of closing time on a Saturday night. The baristas are great and they have scrabble in the back.

Susan G.

Yelp
I don't think so honey - Think Coffee - more like Think Again Coffee. I don't think so honey anyone patronizing this place. You be the judge...our party of four came in and three of us ordered, sat down, and were enjoying our drinks, when the front employee came over and asked for our COVID vaccine records and then told the person in our group he had to leave because he hadn't ordered anything. WTF. I think it was a classic case of ageism - as the employee then told us over our objections, that "seating is a privilege". I don't think so honey. Getting and retaining customers is a privilege and this place should NOT be in business with this rude employee. Join us across the street at Starbucks. I don't think so honey - Think Coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
Updating my review from many years ago. I now work in the neighborhood and go to this think coffee frequently. The staff is nice, even if not terribly well informed, the wifi is consistent, and there are usually free seats. Most importantly, the coffee: In one word, espresso drinks are erratic. I have had exceptional cortados on occasion, and awful ones almost as frequently. I think the beans are outstanding, but some of the baristas are not well trained. Note, i reached out to management and expressed this feedback, making it clear i wasn't looking for anything free, but i never heard back, so not sure this place values their customers enough. Ps-i appreciate they have a rewards system now which i think they didnt used to.

Paul M.

Yelp
Really loved this place pre-COVID. Went there for a coffee with my partner this morning. The food selection was very limited (scones and basic muffins but no fig bars and other great pastries that we used to enjoy) and the place lacked atmosphere. Is this place under new management? The barista was unable to give us any info and it seemed to be her first day on the job. Probably give it another try but will go to another Think Coffee instead.
google avatar

Hadeer S.

Yelp
1 star because of the dirty bathroom. I doubt a manager really comes here to even check on the place. Absolutely disgusting. Seriously, I came to study for one week straight, and the toilet has not been cleaned for 1 week (the part behind the seat). I refused to take a picture because I didn't want something on my phone that dirty. The coffee is expensive, place is loud, staff is unable to give larger cups (I ordered an Americano once and asked for a larger cup so I can have more water) because "everything is formulated into the price." The price is exorbitant for such a mediocre cup of coffee.
google avatar

Alma W.

Yelp
I came here to do a little work and I've never experienced such a horrible coffee shop before. People sit down at coffee shops to have meetings and do work. So naturally black eye peas blasting in the background is NOT conducive to that mood. I could barely hear my thoughts here, no clue how anyone was able to hear over the music for the too many meetings going on. To make matters worse, my soy latte tasted like water. As a coffee shop fanatic, this was an infuriating place to spend my time.

Samantha G.

Yelp
Really good matcha latte and great options on the menu. Good location and lots of available seating. Laptops allowed as well.
google avatar

Aaron S.

Yelp
If you're looking for a coffee shop with an abundance of seating with free wi-fi, even during the weekends, then Think Coffee is a good place to get work done. However, the coffee isn't amazing; it's just decent. We ordered the Cold Brew, but it tasted very watered down. There are a lot of tables and seats in the front and back of the shop. If you want to work in a quieter space, then sit in the back. The front can get noisy, because music blares from a speaker hanging near the entrance. The music is all over the place; it goes from 90's R&B to modern Rap/Hip-Hop to indie to rock. It can get distracting, but it is interesting to guess which genre will be played next.
google avatar

Kit C.

Yelp
Service is extremely slow, waited fifteen minutes for a cup of hot tea. The place is a little old and run down. Not a very comfy coffeehouse to linger.
google avatar

Jules L.

Yelp
4-star cold brew at a 4-star place. Although not as rich as some, Think's cold brew is refreshing and sweet - great for a daily cup. Love the always-friendly staff, spacious cafe with plenty of seating, and phone number-linked rewards system. I do have to echo others about the lack of cleanliness but Think will always be a staple in my book! For the best cold brew in NYC, follow @nyccoldbrew on Instagram!
google avatar

Qahtan A.

Yelp
The overnight oats are amazing. The place is really great for studting. I barely see anyone who isn't. Amazing vegan options. 8/10 would study here again
google avatar

Jonathan A.

Yelp
This was a nice quiet coffee shop. My group was tired from a long day of walking and we holed up here for a few hours and enjoyed some hot beverages. We also broke out the scrabble tiles and played a few games. They also are very conciencious when it come to recycling and all their containers can be composted.
google avatar

Vivian Y.

Yelp
I've been a great fan of Think Coffee and it's co-office atmosphere. This was my first visit to their MePa location (most of the time I tend to slave at their soho location). First impressions, this place was bigger and brighter than its soho counterpart. Like the other location, you line up at the cashier and pick up at a separate counter. Offerings are the same in all the Think locations it seems (the food consist of various baked goods and grilled cheese sandwiches). I ordered a latte in a mug and a grilled cheese with cheddar and tomatoes (each additional toppings for the grilled cheese is extra). The coffee was alright and the grilled cheese was on point. However, the most important part of think coffee is the possibility to work continuously for hours and not get bothered. Of course don't be a dick and order a few more cups of coffee if you plan on chilling there for 5 hours. All in all, a great place to get your work done. A problem with Think? Their bathroom. Seriously, all their bathrooms stink. I really wish they could do something about it. If they could, they would be a 5/5 in my books!
google avatar

Warren C.

Yelp
This is a very spacious yet with an intimate feel organic hip music coffee shop scene... That's a mouth full. Try the vegan chai muffin, very delicious. Also, there's free WiFi, YES!

Yelp
I was in the Meat Packing District with my cousin and she was in the mood for some coffee so we decided to come here. Outside there was a sign with a rainbow so we thought it would be a pretty welcoming coffee shop.. we thought WRONG! Little did we know we were entering a racist establishment! For starters, the girl at the counter was looking at us so wrong while my cousin was looking at the menu before placing her order. She ended up ordering a macchiato.. biggest mistake. It was difficult to even find a seat even though the back area is spacious because it was one person per table and they would spread all their belongings so there was nowhere to sit. So, we had to squeeze in a table to sit even though the people by us were not too happy. Then, she gets her macchiato and aside from being like $5 for a teeny tiny cup, it was disgusting! My cousin literally looks at me and says "that is the most disgusting thing I've ever drank" so I took a sip and it tasted so bad, and the after- taste was even worse! It tasted like the cheapest American black coffee without sugar or DIRT (if you were curious to know how it tasted). Also, she was surprised on how tiny the cup was and the worker spoke to her in the most condescending manner because of that. It was our first time so we obviously didn't know what to expect or anything? We were both nothing but nice to them, so we were surprised to be treated bad. The ladies working were white as well as all the customers there (at least that specific day). They were smiley, sweet, and patient to all the white customers yet we (being the only Latinas) get the dirty looks, rude tones, and terrible service. I hate to call other people racist, but I hate to be treated differently even more. And a message to the manager, or owner.. have a stricter selecting process when hiring the next time around!

Yelp
Nice hidden spot in west village, think coffee chain I general is a good place to meet friends and have a chill environment, this one is one of the better ones. Shout out to Noah a heavily pierced dude here who was super nice.
google avatar

Deanna A.

Yelp
This is a great think location! It's really huge which makes it stand out compared to some of my other go-to coffee shops in the area. Hunker down with free wifi and delicious drinks. Their brewed ice teas - black, mint and green, are all top notch. Most importantly, however, is the fact that they have gluten-free grilled cheese! Pick your cheese and add additional toppings - yuuuum I personally got a cheddar grilled cheese with ham on gluten free bread - it was delicious, melty and the bread was a pretty good size and quality for being GF! They even took the time to wipe down the panini press thoroughly when I asked about shared equipment. Definitely look forward to coming back here for a quick morning coffee, work time or a reasonable delicious grilled cheese for a lunchtime treat!
google avatar

Fernando M.

Yelp
Awesome place to get work done. i didnt try their coffee but their green iced tea was great. Place is huge, plenty of seating. I didnt see many outlets, and also it can be loud. If you need a quiet place, like a library... well, go to a library.
google avatar

Ramon B.

Yelp
Stop in for a quick cup of coffee. Nice soft lighting, fresh pastry's also offering breakfasts sandwiches and more. The coffee was fairly priced and the donut was from one of my favorite distributors. If I'm in the area I'd pass by again.

anthony r.

Yelp
Here's a breakdown on my experience: Suboptimal flat white, weak espresso Drier in bathroom didn't work, no paper towels Expensive $10 egg sandwich that didn't taste good. Might have taken $0.75 to make. Really horrible music selection. Sounds like the basic playlist you'd hear at LaGuardia airport / TGI Friday's / Home Depot Plus: reliable Wifi
google avatar

Samuel T.

Yelp
Probably one of the worst in NYC. Bad service, bitter coffee, and no life to their vibe. Starbucks across the street is better.
google avatar

Justin S.

Yelp
Perhaps the largest coffee shop I've stepped foot in on this island. Plenty of comfortable space for work. From what I can tell they're very conscientious about where their coffee beans come from. For more details check out socialprojectcoffee.com Lots of options for food - another reason to stop in. Small Spanish latte was great and would definitely order again.
