In 2025, the Best Restaurants Are Bars, Cafes, and Third Places | Eater

"In Houston, Third Place began as a cafe to monetize a restaurant space and expand reach beyond special-occasion dining: it serves coffee drinks and pastries and anchors a larger project that includes a chef residency program with rotating pop-ups, workshops from local artisans (potters, florists, jewelers), and a craft table for remote workers, all designed to embed the operation in the neighborhood and create the ’third place’ lifestyle rather than only a destination for formal meals." - Nick Mancall-Bitel

Houston’s Best Coffee Shops | Eater Houston

"In early April, Top Chef alums Evelyn Garcia and Henry Lu opened a new daytime coffee shop and collaborative space in their Heights restaurant Jun. Open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, the bar area at Third Place is an inviting spot for diners to order various coffee drinks, while the dining room and patio area are great for co-working and mingling. Try the fizzy namesake infused with pineapple, and pair it with sweet or savory pastries. Third Place is also opening up its kitchen to local chefs as a part of a collaborative community project, which makes room for chef residencies, where culinary talent can pop up during lunch service to test out new dishes." - Brianna Griff

Google
What a great place to grab asian, fusion food that rotates often as well as their unique drink menu. I got the Third Place Matcha and their sando which were great. Super good service, clean spot with lots of seating and parking. The matcha was very refreshing which i enjoyed. The chips had a lime taste which i wasn’t a huge fan of. The sandwich was good, reminded more of a Bani Mi in terms of flavor than a japanese sando. Overall good spot and i would come back.

Google
I stopped by for breakfast at this adorable place! When you walk in, you get a nice aroma of coffee plus a little bit of relaxing hint of essential oils. They had really interesting fusion breakfast! I got the nutty cold brew with peanut foam and the quiche with Chinese broccoli. They also had typical breakfast stuff like espresso and breakfast tacos if that’s what you’re feeling. Adorable.

Decided to give this coffee spot a try after reading the reviews. Was very hopefully going in but unfortunately we had a bland experience. The location itself is inside of Jun. Location is nice, definitely an aesthetically pleasing spot if you want to catch up a friend. Lots of students here on their laptops. It wasn’t a “quiet” place, there was some buzz and some tables where audible. Not a huge deal but if you’re trying to have a quiet 1 on 1 this is not the spot. We ordered 2 lattes and a chicken salad. Presentation for both items fell extremely short for what they are charging. I get it, they have to pay rent and their employees but you would expect a little more from the prices and the location. It definitely wants to give off vibes of a higher end cafe but it just falls short. Nothing against the employees as we were treated just fine. If you look at my pictures, we ordered two lattes, flavor was decent, not the best and not the worse, the problem is you’re paying $7 and they don’t even fill up the cup. If you look at my reviews, I go to a lot of coffee shops, price to experience here is way off. As an example I’ve attached a photo of a latte I drank the following day, was charged $4.50 and it was FULL on a bigger cup and at a location that was comparable to this. The chicken salad was a huge letdown. For $9 you got less for then a lunchables. I would avoid this item and all other like items. Presentation was very poor and the chicken salad was plain. Lastly, they had zero pastries when we showed up. Not a big deal, but they have about 5/7 employees cooking off to the side you would think they could make some more throughout the day. Parking is also a hit or miss as the location is shared with other shops and parking spots are very limited. There’s construction going on and street parking is also hard to find. Overall, I can not recommend this place if you want to get a good experience with your drinks/food. Good place if you want to sit and catch up with a friend or study and have no interest in getting any items to eat.

Google
(Yes it’s the same location as Jun). If this ain’t the best cup of cappuccino I’ve ever had…wow. I was blown away by the flavor. Instant 5 stars when a cafe has amazing coffee. The vibes were also great. The music was relaxing, lots of mood lighting, great and fast service. I went during the day to work a bit and there was plenty of space and the decor was super cute. Not a lot of parking. Carpool if possible or park along the side neighborhood.

Google
Wow. What an incredible find! I went for some coffee but left with a whole gourmet meal! The cold brew with piloncillo and peanut foam was incredibly flavorful and such a fun twist on flavors I grew up with. I also tried out their limited time salad that included eggplant, shrimp, and a variety of elements that I wouldn’t think to pair together. Definitely keep this place in mind for coffee, bites, and a place to work/study.

Google
Super cute vibe! I think it's a coffee shop inside of Jun. Went for the subo popup, but ended up ordering the third place matcha. Top tier :) I was bothered by the price but I'll eat trash, it's whatever. Yummy popup food, good area, nice vibes. 10/10

Google
Just came through to Third Place for a quick coffee after hearing that this place had just opened up 2 months ago and was super impressed with the atmosphere and vibe of the place. It's extremely unique in terms of the interior design and aesthetic and that's one of the reasons I love trying out different coffee shops in Houston. When I asked about their popular drinks the barista was friendly and really took his time with the Nutty Brew I ordered which is made with their own in-house made peanut foam. Was it worth the $9.50? Id definitely say so! Will definitely be coming back here during my work from home days.

Google
I came here after seeing all the great reviews on social media and Google. Many people said the pastries and drinks were good, but unfortunately, the pastry I had was stale and made me sick. The Americano was honestly bad too. I didn’t expect to have such a bad experience in a place with such a cool vibe. On top of that, it took about 20 minutes for just an Americano and a pastry to arrive — I was actually about to leave.

Yelp
I had no idea this place existed. I actually found it the way I find most new spots, by typing "coffee" into the Maps search bar and checking what is nearby. I am so glad it led me here. I had not been to Jun before, so when I pulled up and did not see "Third Place" on the building I was a little confused. They have a small sign out front, and I learned they repurpose the space in the mornings and during the day as a coffee shop. I love that concept. They also host food pop ups and feature different chefs. When we went last week they had a Szechuan pop up. We were there around 9 am so it was too early to try the food, but after reading reviews I definitely want to come back for it. We ordered an iced vanilla matcha and a hot latte, and both were amazing. The space has so much natural light and a really relaxing vibe. Even the cups and mugs are are so cute!! We ended up staying for a while, just talking and playing cards. I will absolutely be back!!

Yelp
I'm always on the hunt for coffee shops to get work done. I have a few places I regularly go back to but Third Place might need to be added to the rotation. The ambiance gives off a boho vibe with the indoor plants and rattan furniture. I also love their playlist so much I didn't end up putting on my headphones to listen to my own music. I visited not too long after they opened and had the whole place to myself for a bit. I ordered the cowboy tea and salvi cheese bread. I honestly didn't know what I was going to expect with the drink but I was so pleasantly surprised. I'm usually a fan of hojicha and oolong on their own as earthy teas but the addition of jarritos gave it a nice acidity. It was a unique spin on a "sweetened teas". The cheese bread was also amazing. It reminded me of a Filipino pastry called mamon that is a fluffy sweet bread. They added a big dollop of black sesame butter on top. I love the creativity of their menu items and it seems as though they rotate things seasonally. This is a great hidden gem in the Heights area and would definitely recommend checking them out.

Yelp
Good service upon arrival, barista had a suggestion on a drink but I still chose one to my liking. Pastry display is nicely set up. The matcha had a fizzy and strong pineapple taste and the donut tasted freshly made. The place felt really relaxing, a good place to get some work done or just take time for one's self.

Yelp
I have been seeing so many IG reels about Third Place and it's near me, so wanted to try it out! We went on a Saturday, and got the Peanut Cold Brew drink (I think) which was mid.. I wasn't impressed with it. I did get an empanada, and it was freaking fire!! I would go back just for that. It was so warm, flavorful and perfect size for a light snack. Pricing is a little high to be honest. I got 2 drinks and a pastry and it was like $27.. Not sure I'd go back for coffee, but I'd go to try their food/menu. Parking is crazy, cause it's right next to Happy Hour Pilates.. but we were able to find street parking. Service was quick. Not super friendly, but also not hateful. Definitely gorgeous inside and super modern.

Yelp
I love this place already but when they started doing all the pop ups I wanted to cry. The food and chefs they have allowed into their space have been phenomenal. Every item is made carefully and with the best of ingredients. You get to watch in the window and enjoy a nice drink from Third Place. Such a great move to showcase other chefs and it shows you that the people of Jun and Third Place really value the culinary community.

Yelp
We came in for Saturday lunch service for Chef Suu Khin's pop-up. Parking wasn't an issue, as there is a reasonably-sized lot in front as well as neighborhood streets. However, depending on the rotation and time of day, it can get (and was) pretty full. It is a small-ish place so it does get busy during lunch service. The ambiance is nice - the atmosphere felt much more casual and fun. That being said, it was fairly noisy as there were quite a few people. I got the Heights Matcha and the Lemongrass Catfish Congee. My father got the Shan Khao Swè and we shared the Burmese Chips & Salsa. The matcha was so refreshing and helped to balance the tangy-spicy flavors throughout. We shared a bit of each other's dish also - the noodles had a good heat and soaked up the sauce well. That congee, though - I am NOT exaggerating when I say it changed my brain chemistry. The warm, thick soup with tender catfish chunks combined with the cruller and peanut-sesame crunch was heavenly, especially with the provided garlic-chili flakes. Lived up to the hype and then some! I even got the chance to see Chef Suu as she stopped by each table to check in. She was very nice and answered my father's questions. I hope to eat more of her creations in the future. I've always really liked Jūn, so when I heard that Third Place was opening up during the day, I was excited to see what the owners would do. I was not disappointed in the slightest and look forward to future chef rotations and events. We will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Having been to Jun for dinner before and remembering it as one of the best dinners I've had in awhile, I was excited to find out that it's now a coffee/lunch spot during the day. The drinks and pastries are also unique like Jin's menu. Not really surprised that I'd enjoy everything here too. We ordered as much as we could lol. Will deal with 45 south to come back again for a caffeine and pastry fix . -Iced matcha with honey: 4/5. Matcha flavor was great. Ceremonial? Just a little too much honey for me -Nutty brew: 5/5. Salvadorian cold brew with peanut foam. Heavenly -Cortado: 5/5. Nice and strong -Cafe de olla: 5/5. Christmas in a cup -Bo lo bao: sweet bread with savory carnitas was a delicious combo -Empanada: has tomato, bacon, and cream cheese. Loved the flaky crust -peach tart: we loved the peaches. Sweet but not overpowering. Will return to try more of everything and catch rotating chef residencies

Yelp
I had an Americano, their savory pastry and fish congee. Everything was yummy but the congee was too salty... their service was good and I love their interior. Not a big space but I like the concept of having guest chefs.

Yelp
I've had their drinks here, some baked goods and their chicken salad. The baked goods are outstanding and the chicken salad was pretty good. The match drink I had was decent but I'm taking off a star because it was $9 dollars. That was the most expensive matcha drink I've had ever anywhere and it wasn't worth $9.

Yelp
The cafe/ lunch menu is available Monday-Friday (8am-3pm) inside Jun. At 5pm, except on Tuesdays, Jun (restaurant) opens. There is a sizable (for the Heights) parking lot with several spaces, but since it operates as an eatery and cafe, available spaces probably depend on the hour. There were quite a few open spaces at 11:15 but not many at 12 as there were a few cars waiting. There's patio seating, a high bar near the ordering station, and a variety of choices in the main dining area, which has a explorer/ resort/ jungle aesthetic. I wasn't going to try it, but the tomato and cheese empanada was surprisingly delicious and something I'd order again. Everyone compares it to a fancy hot pocket. The menu says it has bacon tomato jam, cream cheese, and thai basil. The bacon tomato jam is sweet, rich in concentrated tomato flavor, and meaty. The cream cheese is hot, fluffy, and smooth. The dough is like a concentrated croissant when it is flakey, crispy, and buttery. The salvi cheese bread with black sesame butter was an interesting pairing. The bread tasted like sweet cornbread topped with a warm and melted savory sesame spread. The bo lo bao, a "pineapple bun" filled with carnitas, tasted like a toasty but not sweet pineapple bun filled with tender and savory bbq pork chunks filling. I think I'd enjoy it more if it had a sweeter flavor profile but that may be due to me expecting the familiar foods to lean on the sweeter side. The dough was perfectly crispy yet bread-like. The cowboy tea (houjicha, oolong tea syrup, tamarind jarritos) tasted like a fancy sparkling mocktail. It was definitely fun to try and an interesting mix. I chose the Lagos link (wagyu spicy suya chili, Gouda fondue) from a list of gourmet hotdogs by Chef Tristen (chef residency) during Monday's lunch. It was pretty good, though I wanted the chili to be piping hot and not just warm/hot. The offerings seem to change weekly, so look at their IG account.

Yelp
Came here for brunch with a friend! The drinks are different so that was a nice bonus. My friend got the matcha and I got the cold brew. Both drinks were very good! We also got a couple of dishes, but it looks like they change out the menu. Not sure how often though. I got the catfish congee and my friend got the chicken salad. I personally liked the chicken salad better. We shared the tomato empanada which was very good. That was my fav item we got out of everything we tried. We also got the chocolate banana bread and the icing was the star of that item. Employees were nice. You order at the counter and they bring your food out to you. Plenty of parking in their lot!

Yelp
Third places look to be part of Jun. The name Third place is just on a small sign , so don't be shy and just enter. I ordered the Bolo Bao and the third place matcha ( what match take 1st place? Lol). The bolo bun reminds me of the Chinese bbq bun but filled with meat. The third place matcha is definitely unique. It reminds me of the Brazilian lemonade with matcha : light sourness , milky, and matcha aroma. Somehow it works for me. The shop is perfect for studying, coffee date, or just hang with your iPad/laptop.

Yelp
I've been following Chef Evelyn ever since her pop-up days years ago. It's great seeing her progression from then to now. Of course when I heard about Third Place I knew immediately I had to come. I've been twice now since their opening a few weeks ago and can't wait to come back. First of all, I love that they're repurposing Jun as a coffee/lunch spot in the daytime. Somehow, the decor inside works perfectly for both concepts. I also love how they feature local/special chefs weekly with an ever changing menu. This will be what keeps me coming back again and again. Drinks: Third place matcha: 4/5 interesting flavors, it reminded me of a pina colada + matcha Nutty Brew: 4.5/5 who knew peanut foam would belong with coffee Cowboy Tea: 4/5 interesting drink, the flavors worked well but not something i'd get all the time Iced Latte with Piloncillo syrup: 3.75/5 I figured I should actually try a normal drink so I can compare with other coffee shops. The latte was solid but not anything that special. I wish they had more syrups to choose from Food: Bo lo bao: 4/5 perfectly soft and filled with carnitas Empanada: 3/5 the tomato and cream cheese threw me off a little but the empanada crust was really tasty Salvi cheese bread: 4/5 this was so good and i loved the sesame butter it came with Kolache with sausage and cheese: 3.5/5 not bad but not something I would get again I've had one of their popups so far and it was a chef who I've been following on social media. Her food did not disappoint! Overall, I love this spot and the concept. It's a great place to get some work done or to catch up with friends. The seats were well spaced and it was not too loud. I can't wait to come back and bring more friends to try it out

Yelp
Tried the Shan Khao Swé (Shan noodles) and it was fantastic! Flavorful, comforting, and just the right spice. A cozy spot for a quick and satisfying meal.

Yelp
The salads were very expensive for a side salad portion. Additionally, the chicken salad did not mention any quinoa or else I would not have ordered it. We were very hungry after eating our "entree". Will not go back.

Yelp
I stopped by Third Place again to grab their matcha latte on my drive back to Dallas. I really enjoyed their specialty drinks when I first went there but I wanted to try their original matcha latte. They have been open for only about a month so there's practically no wait right now. Their matcha had a beautiful deep and dark green color. After just one sip, I have already fallen in love. I enjoyed their third place matcha specialty drink but wow I think their original matcha latte is even better. You can tell they use ceremonial grade matcha, its flavor is pretty strong. It comes unsweetened and I added vanilla syrup to it. You can also choose from honey and simple syrup. It was honestly a perfectly balanced sweetness level where it wasn't too sweet nor lacking sweetness. Dare I say this is the best matcha latte I've had in Houston so far. I love their concept of being a hub for chef residencies, showcasing many unique chefs and their cuisines. They got a good thing going on here for sure
google avatar

Yelp
Empanada and cheese bread was pretty good, I think they'd taste better fresh out the oven. Ambiance was nice, quiet place to work or yap a little. Not much to say about service since it's just counter service.

Yelp
Amazing matcha and empanada! Love the vibe of the place ! Highly recommend this place

Yelp
Loved it here! Will definitely return for working / getting things done. I love the space of Jun and it's so nice to be able to return to spend time there during the day. I went when they have one of their lunch chef residencies, by Suu Khin who was a James Beard semifinalist. I tried her fish congee which was basically like a warm hug in a bowl, a savory rice / almost oatmeal consistency. From the Third Place regular offerings, I had the nutty cold brew, which had peanut cold foam. It was very good, but I should have gotten it a different time as it did not pair too well with the other things I got, which is my bad. I had a hard time choosing just one pastry, and settled on the Texas peach Semita which was delicious. The staff were very nice and friendly. It was busy during lunch, which would be expected from a chef pop up, but I was still able to find a seat at the bar and enjoy my book!

Yelp

Yelp
The empanada with cream cheese, bacon jam and Thai basil was amazing. I'm going to be thinking about it for a while!

AJ G.

Yelp
I've been here multiple times and everything is amazing. The cold brew and matcha are great. The empanadas are the best breakfast pastry I've ever had. Everything else I've tried hasn't disappointed. Vibes are good, and it hasn't been too busy to enjoy like most places in the heights. 10/10 would recommend.
