This family-owned gem dishes out incredible BBQ pork, roast duck, and comforting noodle soups, all served with care and quick service.
"Freshly reopened after a remodel last spring, family-owned Tho Tuong has been locally beloved for almost 30 years for its Vietnamese-style barbecue, centering around pork and duck. The hours are limited to daytime and the lunch menu is brief, with duck and pork done two ways — roasted and crackly or glazed and barbecued. The classic fave is the lunch box, where you can pick two or three meats with steamed rice, pickled mustard greens, jalapenos, a mess of fresh herbs and green onions, and a cup of nuoc leo (a dark, flavorful broth) for dipping and/or pouring over everything. The combo can also be ordered in soup form, as a steamy bowl of noodles in broth loaded with your choice of meats. Sometimes, though, the move is just to order a pound of barbecued pork and walk away snacking on the shiny scarlet slices — a personal box of porky candy, just for you." - Meg van Huygen, Sue Kidd
"This Lincoln District spot is run by a father-and-daughter duo who make some of the best barbecue crispy pork and duck around. The most expensive things max out at $16, and you can decide whether you want your meal as a soup with egg noodles, or as a lunch plate over rice. We’re perennial suckers for the luxe roast pork with the stripe of crispy skin attached. Also, if you’re not feeling the full meal deal, you can just get a box of delicious roasted meat with nothing else to distract you from it. There are no wrong choices here." - meg van huygen
