This is the best restaurant in Penang in my humble opinion. Authentic Cantonese cuisine and honest local fare. Environment is soothing, cooling and bright. I come back every time I visit Penang 🥹. The owner purchases the ingredients daily and you can taste the freshness. I would highly recommend the yuan yang char kuay teow, fried noodle in porridge, and the spring onion sliced fish. Tho Yuen is a must try!!!!

Travel Cafe Eat Drink - Malaysia & Asia Nice local eatery where many regulars eat here. Came by earlier to see a lot of seating available cos the other day was pretty crowded when I intend to eat here. By 830am, tables started to be taken up, and the owner was around to assist seating. The fried noodles has good 'wok hei' and generous ingredients, but the dim sum was average.

Jan 2026: had the dim sum for breakfast and it was so good. They also allow orders of one piece each and not necessarily to order the entire “long”. Next time will go and have the crispy prawn noodles and I saw other reviews saying it’s good.

Went there early to try out their Hoongthoo Mee. Quite a generous serving for the small bowl, and which was good enough for two persons. Reasonably priced at RM 14.00 per bowl. The noodle taste is authentic and can be enhanced with black vinegar placed in a bottle beside. The char siew pau I tried could be better if the fillings are more juicy and moist.

I’m a fan of crispy noodles and they have one of the best king prawn crispy noodles I’ve tried, food was so good I even forgot to take the photo ☺️ tried 3 dishes in total! The waitress recommended 鸿圆面，taste better than it looked, and 炒番薯 is so fragrant and tasty. Definitely recommending all my friends here to try when we’re in Penang.

Fried rice with strong wok hey smell. Rice slightly harder. Fried rice noodle with vermicelli also comes with wok hey smell but taste abit bland. I like Soggy starch with crispy noodle. Strong soda smell of crispy noodle overwhelms the meat gamey smell. Flavorful Starch gravy probably use thick boiled broth. Egg tart is not my favorite. More like custard jam.

Penang has a competitive food scene. Good restaurants are aplenty and diners are spoilt with choices. Tho Yuen, when compared to other dim sum restaurants, pale significantly in comparison. When it comes to dim sum, variety of items and quality of items are important. This place lags behind other nearby dim sum restaurants in both. The skin of their steamed dim sum is too thick. The crust of the egg tart was flaky and tasteless. The same can be said for the egg pudding on the egg tart. After trying other dim sum restaurants (some are really near to this one), i must say that this is Quite a disappointing experience to say the least. The only saving grace is that its prices are lower.

Probably one of the best sar hor fun you can find in Penang is at Tho Yuen Cantonese Restaurant. This iconic and humble eatery has stood the test of time, consistently serving some of the best classic Cantonese dishes. Prices are reasonable. The premises have since been upgraded with air conditioning, making dining more comfortable. Highly recommended for those yearning for the nostalgic flavors of Penang’s yesteryears.
