The Best Fun Date-Night Spots in Houston | Eater Houston

"Even if you don’t book a hotel at the Thompson Hotel, you can still spend a romantic day or night there. Start with a carajillo or espresso martini at Maven Coffee + Cocktails located at the base of the hotel. Then, head to dinner at Chardon, one of the city’s best new hotel and French restaurants, and enjoy dishes like beef cheek bourguignon and foie gras macarons with bubbles. For spectacular views of the Downtown skyline, head to Thompson’s hotel rooftop bar and restaurant Sol 7 for a nightcap. But if a more lively (and fiery) atmosphere is more your speed, head to the nearby Toca Madera, which features cocktails, shots, and steaks lit aflame, live instrumentalists, and fire dancers." - Brittany Britto Garley

Our recent stay at the Thompson Hotel was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, every member of the staff greeted us with warmth, professionalism, and genuine hospitality. The entire team went above and beyond to ensure our comfort, making us feel like valued guests at every turn. The property itself is stunning, with spectacular city views that truly set the tone for a luxury weekend in Houston. We loved the hotel’s dog-friendly amenities, and the complimentary car service to Houston Astros games made getting to and from the ballpark effortless. Its location directly across from a beautiful park added an extra layer of charm and convenience. And the bath tub with its sweeping views? The perfect ending to each day. This was the ultimate in refined comfort—an unforgettable stay.

We had another amazing stay at the Thompson! Staff was great and accommodating! Rooms were comfortable and clean! Pool views were gorgeous! Great location next to the park with walking trails and plenty of dining options close by. The "house car" was a nice addition too!

This hotel continues to impress. Amazing staff and beautiful rooms. As a Hyatt Globalist, this hotel is one of the best for recognizing status and loyalty. Special shout out to Cedric, who runs an amazing shuttle between the hotel and nearby offices. Such a great way to start the day with someone who clearly loves their job.

The food, atmosphere, and drinks were amazing and above expectations. Our server Gary was exceptional with on point recommendations and Jelen the bartender absolutely nailed the drinks with taste and presentation. Honestly, I thought the restraunt was going to rely on the amazing view of Houstons skyline to ensure a reservation was required. Now i understand that the skyline view is the added bonus. Oh, and my wife kicked me in the shin after reading and not mentioning how amazing the chicken tenders were! And this was coming the person that typically takes the breading off! But the real jewel are the Tuna Poke Tacos!

Staff at The Thompson went above and beyond to make our stay amazing! Hotel staff schedule a car service to take us to the Astros game! Woo Hoo||||Only two problems, there is a lack of seating around the pool and we were unable to get room service after 11:00. Other than that, I truly great weekend.

Google
Best hotel experience I’ve ever had! The staff was beyond accommodating, friendly and caring. Truly a rarity today! They offered not just customer service but personalized touches, such as bringing my bag and orders to my room! The hotel smells divine. The restaurant was very nice, as well. I had the Oysters, which were incredible. Everything was fresh. The hotel room was beautiful. The bathroom, in particular, felt like a spa. The beds are very comfortable and the pillows were amazing! But again, what really left an impression was the staff. I’m very grateful!

Stayed here on an extended trip for work + catching up with friends who live in Houston. The Thompson is a phenomenal hotel with GREAT service in all areas — valet, house keeping, and concierge/front desk. The space and rooms are modern and homey which make it a great place to be, plus common spaces with views that don’t disappoint! I had nothing but positive experiences with every single member of their team - they were kind, considerate, and helpful… Cedric gave me a ride downtown in the hotel town car and even made an extra stop at a nearby coffee shop when Maven (the coffee shop in the hotel) was unexpectedly closed.

Yelp
Overall we had a nice stay here and the hotel checked almost all the major boxes. The room was spacious, clean, and contemporary. There was plenty of natural light and a nice view. More importantly, the mattress was not worn out on our visit and was comfortable, not hurting our backs. The water pressure and temperature in the shower were both good. Since this was a business trip and this property seems to cater at least partly to business people, the only complaint is that there was no desk in the room. The couch is the only real furniture to sit on and it was very uncomfortable for doing work. There is a coffee shop as part of the hotel, but we didn't want to pay for a drink and possibly be exposed to COVID every day just to have a place to work. The front desk, room service, and housekeeping staff were all friendly and helpful. There is a printed limited menu for room service in the room. We had trouble dialing the extension on the menu on the house phone and the room service button on the phone did not go through either. After several tries we finally got someone. For a comparable breakfast and like at most hotels, we got a comparable/better meal the day before for half the price at a walkable local restaurant. There is a free car (you need to tip the driver) to take you to places within 3 mi of the hotel. Unlike other complimentary car services at comparable hotels that offer this service, the one here will only drop you off and NOT pick u up. This is still a good deal because it saves you half the ride share cost. Still a nice perk/deal at this property. Arrival is a little confusing for first time guests as the hotel lobby is on the 7th floor and the elevator opens to the rear. There are hotel staff in the building lobby to direct guests, but still strange for first time visitors used to more traditional hotel setups. There is a nice complimentary appetizer available from 5-8 next to a small bar in the lobby. The hotel restaurant was closed for renovations during our visit. There seems to be another restaurant in the building lobby, but we did not try it. There is another restaurant in the lot on the corner which is an upscale steak house that we did try, Toca Madera, see our review of that. Overall, a good experience here. Would stay here on the company dime again and recommend you give them a try. If vacationing in Downtown Houston, there seem to be other accommodations closer to the nightlife/shopping areas, but you can always get the free car service to drop you there. We did one night to eat and it was not far by car.

Yelp
Rating: 3.5 Stars My friend and I stayed here on a Thursday night. The decor in the building is sleek. The rooms were good and had great bathrooms. The separation for noise though was not the best both between rooms and also from the outside. There was very loud music being blasted around midnight and security was kind enough to check it out and have it fixed for us. All in all, a nice room albeit a bit on the noisier side.

Yelp
United had a meltdown and dumped me halfway through a trip home, leaving me in Houston unexpectedly for two days without my bags. The saving grace in all of that was finding this hotel and making the best out of my 48 hours. The Thompson Houston was fabulous! It is breathtaking, from the views, to the common areas, to the rooms. Everything is modern, tasteful, spacious and high end. The design of the hotel is unparalleled! The staff were always welcoming and friendly and made our stay very comfortable. The location is also fantastic. It's across from a huge park with trails (you can borrow e-bikes from the hotel to explore the surroundings) and it was a relatively short walk (15-20 minutes) to downtown. Ubers were also super easy to get around and they have a nice, clean house car that will drop you off anywhere you need to go in the area for free. The service in the restaurant was slow, but otherwise the food is good and the setting is relaxing, bright, and comfortable. I'm so glad I had a chance to stay here and would recommend it to anyone staying in Houston!

Yelp
This is a gorgeous hotel! My husband booked the king suite with city views and it did not disappoint! He also purchased the romance package, which was perfect! The room was comfy and the shower was amazing! We were gifted a bottle of rosé at check in. Both check in and check out was seamless. Everyone--from valet to front desk personnel--was courteous and welcoming. We absolutely enjoyed our stay and look forward to going back!

Yelp
Luxury experience in a Panorama Suite, including mattress and linens. Due to food contract transition, service a little slow but pleasant and accommodating and personable in Sol7. Couldn't find concierge at 6:30pm on a Saturday. Great atmosphere in public spaces. Excellent front desk welcome. All staff we encountered were professional and personable. Water stations don't work on our floor. Highlight was our dinner at Chardon, which just opened this week. High end French with a touch of Texas. Great service from David. We would come back.

Yelp
Gorgeous space and views! We thought the way finding in the entrance could use a little help as it wasn't easy to understand where to go to get to the restaurant upstairs. When we arrived, we weren't greeted immediately which was also disappointing. The space is beautiful and the views are amazing. The food was okay. Cocktails are delicious! We def want to go back to experience it again now that they're open and hopefully have smoothed the hiccups out of their service.

Yelp
where do I start ... this place is Amazing oh my good ness VIEWS VIEWS VIEWS ... the city line is a jaw dropping view to gaze at day or night . great place for pics and weddings and just complain hang out and take in the beautiful backdrop city line views 360 panoramic views it reminds you of being right smack in the middle of New York or something like that. Yelp
Got the chance to visit and enjoy the Thompson Houston, by Hyatt for a family member's wedding. Beautiful place and the set up of the wedding was lovely! The transition from ceremony to reception did take sometime but with the couple having a cocktail hour it did make the time pass by quicker. There is also a rooftop patio where you can enjoy the Houston Downtown skyscrapers. This area is a great photo opportunity as well. I highly recommend this place to host your wedding or an important event.

Yelp
Perfect place for a staycation. It was such a gorgeous hotel with incredible views, a nice pool, and a nice restaurant. The staff was so friendly and helpful!

Yelp
This brand new Thompson just opened one week ago! They were still putting up wall art and filling up the pool when I arrived. I was so excited to stay at a brand new hotel! My initial impression was mixed... I loved the freakishly large shower that could fit 6 people, the DS&Durga bath amenities, incredible views and signature quirky Thompson interior design throughout. But their non suite rooms are on the smaller end for US standards. Giant bathrooms but tight living space - I wish there was a small desk/chair in the room but I guess Thompson lifestyle guests don't work in their rooms? Beware their marketing materials on Instagram, FB, etc - those are pictures of their roomier suites. The non suite rooms are smaller and less bright. I was definitely disappointed at check in but was fine after resetting expectations. The rooms are still very nice and luxuriously decorated. The hotel has a pair of complementary BMW house cars that will take you anywhere in a 3 mile radius (no pick up and it's first come first serve) and it's only a 5min ride to downtown Houston. They have valet parking. The pool and spa were not yet open when I visited but the gym was open - it was nicely set up. The team is still working out their quirks. I messaged the team in advance via messenger as directed by their app and never received a response. At check in, I was told their system was booking rooms that aren't actually available. Front desk staff weren't fully knowledgeable about Hyatt elite member perks but free breakfast for Globalists were honored though upgrades were not proactively applied so you'll have to ask. Hotel is pet friendly

Yelp
Atmosphere was great. Server was nice. Drinks were good. Food was ok. Appetizers were better than entrees.

Sweetkiks R.

Yelp
Quick stay cation. The hotel is lovely and the rooms were very nice and clean. The art throughout the hotel is great. My only complaints... the lobby bar closed at 10:30 on a Friday night??? It felt like they not only closed but were kicking people out of the space. This was disappointing as there were 8 of us looking to talk and hang out with some night caps. Valet is RIDICULOUS at $55 per night with NO other parking option!!

Yelp
Booked a room on the hotels website for a staycation. When booking I had a skyline view or park view option. I selected skyline (higher price). When I checked in the lady informed me their system just showed a standard king room. I pulled up the reservation email and conveniently they do not include which view you booked. So both of my rooms over looked the parking lot. Not a good start... we headed to the pool which was packed only to be told that the wait staff would not wait on us because we weren't in a seat (no seats are available). The pool has nice views but it was extremely cloudy and filled with hair. Can't comment on the food since we could not get a seat to eat and had to Uber to a nearby restaurant. The rooms were nice except they don't close all the way on their own so make sure you double check that the door is actually closed before walking off. All in all, not the best customer service or amenities especially when you compare it to some of Houston's other higher end hotels.

Yelp
My wife and I have been fans of the Thompson brand for a while. Our most recent stay was at the Thompson Madrid. The Houston Thompson has raised the bar even more. We decided to celebrate our babymoon here and the Houston Thompson team pulled out all the stops to make our stay extra special. They even had a pregnancy pillow in the suite for my wife- wow! Victor was a total rockstar. The rooms were very well appointed and the views of the Houston skyline unrivaled. The house car service was very convenient. Cedric took great care of us. The fitness center had all the equipment needed for a vacation workout. We will definitely be returning in the future- next time with the baby!

Yelp
Will start off with bougie. I mean if you like a place to relax and unwind. This is it. From the pool area to the bar/restaurant was supreme. The only thing I'll say is do not get a room on the Allen parkway side. The street is noisy after hours and not just a little bit either. Other than that the staff. Room. And valet service are top notch. I don't like anyone driving or parking my car but all was simply beyond expectation. Will stay here again. P.S. the suite with a floor to ceiling window has blinds in the shower. Didn't see them at 1st and not sure anyone was looking but something to note if you don't want anyone to see. lol.

Yelp
I am normally a loyal Marriott patron, however this Hyatt property in the heart of Houston's Buffalo Bayou Neighborhood on Allen Parkway adjacent to Houston's Historic Freeman's Town is a jewel. The chic, ultramodern boutique Hotel and Resident Mix Property was both quaint and luxurious. We truly enjoyed our stay and will recommend to our future guest for accommodations.

Yelp
Amazing hotel! The service and amenities here are amazing. I stay here as often as I can because of how convenient and well designed it is. Key, the receptionist, is really welcoming and hospitable.

Yelp
Ben and the whole staff from the valet made me feel comfortable and enjoyed my stay! Thompson will definitely become one of the best hotels in Houston.

Marianna M.

Yelp
This hotel obviously is wanting high paying customers. yet they can't deliver. they have every entrance blocked off...hard for uber to pick you up. You have to pay $55 for your car every day. They "say" they have a house car to ferry you anywhere within 3 miles...FALSE The car is never available. such incompetent staff when you pay 400/night. Only person that was kind and an angel was Russell. He should be the heartbeat of this hotel. Because there is no heart of this hotel. It's cold, weird, and clueless. He saved it for us honestly.

Dave K.

Yelp
Overall it's a nice new hotel property visually (opened in January). The view and the pool are nice. That's where it ends. The service is terrible - hotel staff, restaurant, pool...all completely unacceptable. It was confusing how such an expensive (false luxury) hotel has such terrible service. IMPORTANT: watch out for the variety of hidden fees. Add an additional $100-$150 a night on top of published room rate. There 7 different service and/or tax fees added. The spa adds 21% service fee and requests an additional 20% gratuity...what? The bill for poolside drinks included a hidden 20% as well. Not worth the money. So many better quality and service oriented hotels to choose from.

Yelp
Breathtaking views! This new, modern hotel is gorgeous. The double height lobby is like a cozy modern library with plenty of sofas and seats. The food at Sol 7 restaurant is delicious, especially the steak and eggs. The rooftop area is amazing and the landscaping is awesome; however, the pool wasn't ready and opening next week. The fitness center was decent; however, the spa wasn't ready and opening next week as well. Our suite had an awesome view of downtown Houston skyline!

Salman P.

Yelp
Amazing staff, excellent service and very good food at the restaurant on the 7th floor of the hotel! The pool is beautiful and offers amazing views of Downtown Houston.

Susan S.

Yelp
Their rooftop bar is amazing! The whole staff, especially our server Leslie, was wonderful and the food was delicious! What a beautiful place to view the city and enjoy a peaceful meal!

Jorge O.

Yelp
Beware in the parking lot. Valet staff will move the signs for valet parking and tow your vehicle away. This place is a dump.
