Where to Find Unexpected Flavors in Dallas-Fort Worth | Eater

"We’re big fans of speakeasies, and Thompson’s, a Fort Worth bar on the ground floor of a historic building, has the ultimate Prohibition-style entryway — through a bookshelf. Thompson’s prides itself on literary-inspired cocktails, so stop in for What Drams May Come, an autumnal mix of Highland Park 12 Year Old Whisky, dry sherry, allspice dram liqueur, and Drambuie garnished with a star anise pod. Plus, come Wednesdays for specials highlighting the bar’s selection of whiskies." - Susie Oszustowicz

This unique four-story venue offers something for everyone. The basement features a cozy speakeasy, the first floor is a charming bookstore/bar, the second floor serves as an elegant event space, and the top floor is a sophisticated cigar lounge. We spent most of our time in the cigar lounge, which had an impressive selection—including some of our favorites from Deadwood, South Dakota. The drinks were absolutely delicious, and the overall atmosphere was upscale yet relaxed. Highly recommend for a memorable night out!

Google
Very cool space. Bottom floor is a “book store” very lounge vibes, wooden and leather with couches to sit on. Take the elevator upstairs to the cigar bar, it’s light and well lit and bright, not like most dark cigar lounges. They have a full bar with excellent cocktails and an excellent bar tender who also has a ton of cigar knowledge, chess boards, huge cigar selection.

Google
Fun quaint atmosphere, the secret bookcase door felt like a Harry Potter scene. Decor and lighting make the ambience perfect - one star off because I feel like the music was really loud and overbearing for the vibe. Staff are super friendly and funny, great place. I had 2 of the 3 nonalcoholic drinks on the menu - strawberry soirée and another drink with ginger and lemon (pictured) - and they were both delicious and well crafted

Absolutely fantastic, we did the the cocktail clasd with Natalie. She really knows her cocktails. We had so much fun & then going down to the speekezy. Every bartender took such care with making drinks. Thank you.

Thompsons Bookstore Speakeasy was a wonderful and unique bar with an excellent staff that was very knowledgeable and helpful. We went on a very slow Tuesday night, the last hour and a half they were open. The speakeasy wasn't open (the speakeasy inside the bar is only open Wednesdays, Fridays & Saturdays), but the cigar lounge was open and fantastic. They have 3 floors. The first floor is the main bar. I didn't post a Pic, but it's decorated as a bookstore with comfortable antique and vintage furniture for lounging. The atmosphere is very inviting and has a great vibe. There is a lot of interesting decor and plenty of conversation starters around the first floor. There's some handcrafted unique cocktails on their menu, and the bartenders will gladly give you recommendations. The menu appears to change seasonally, so the drinks in some menu pics on Google didn't accurately show everything they were offering, but many of those drinks are still being offered. The second floor had another bar but was understandably closed when we were there, but we were able to walk in and look around. The third floor is the cigar lounge. They have a great selection and decent price range, so anyone wanting a cigar would have no trouble finding one in their budget. I believe the range was either $7 or $9 to $40+ a cigar. They will give you your desired cut and get the cigar burning while you take a couple of puffs, then give you matches in case it goes out. They have marble chess boards on some tables, which was great to sit down with a cigar, cocktail, and play a game or two. For the speakeasy, you need a password to get in on the nights they're open, which can be found by solving a riddle posted on their Facebook page. The password changes every Wednesday, so be sure to solve the riddle before heading out! I'll will definitely be back and have already been telling everyone about this unique and thoroughly thought-out experience!

Google
It's a three-star for now. We'll give it another chance at a later date. The main floor and cigar lounge are nice. The speakeasy does not live up to the hype. It's cold, dark, and dead. The cocktail and cigar selection is excellent. The service is what ruined it for us. The bartenders on the main floor were good, but the bartender upstairs was pretty horrible. Anyone hosting in a cigar lounge should be a cigar enthusiast. He seemed bothered by everyone who asked about cigars. I almost stepped in and helped the customers myself. He also didn't seem to want to make cocktails. He was missing most of the time. Not even sure where he was. He's the reason we left after only one drink and smoked half a cigar. Can't order a drink if there's no one to make it. Also, we found it a bit odd that they don't allow mentions on Instagram. I never rate businesses on Instagram. I just post pictures and locations. I have a good amount of followers and my posts only help businesses. Not sure why any businesses would block mentions unless they have something to hide.

Google
Great bar to hang out with friends. The cigar bar on the top floor is excellent, and they have a nice selection of cigars. I ordered an old fashioned that was amazing, and the bartender asked how i liked it, i told him i usually like it a little less sweet, but it was still great. My second one was the best old fashioned I've ever had... The secret bar is still the best.... if you know the password...

Google
Loved this unique place! Highly recommend everybody to stop by at least once. We loved the variety of cocktails. The espresso martini was my favorite. Bartender upstairs was very personable, waitress downstairs could’ve used some people skills training. Can’t wait to go back!

Yelp
Thompson's is a speakeasy that has tons to offer behind every "door"... their cocktails, staff, and decor are all a solid five stars! During my stay in Ft.W I actually visited Thompson's twice because it was so great! The first time was with friends and we sat in the library area for a drink. There were only one or two other people there and the vibe offered the perfect setting for conversing and catching up with old friends. The second night I returned solo and, after a cocktail upstairs completely by myself, I went through the bookcase door (hint hint) down to the speakeasy where it was a much more lively vibe. After a short time I chatted with some other out of towners before finally calling it a night. But I had such a great time, both times! I'm always a sucker for a speakeasy and Thompson's does it right. They have a few different spaces, each offering its own personality, but all are staffed by such cool and friendly people serving the same menu of delicious beverages. Thompon's ranks HIGH, if not on top, of my Cool Speakeasy Spots list and that's nationwide! It's that good!

Yelp
I've never experience a place like Thompson's. As you enter from the main street, you're on the book store level. The level above is the cigar lounge and below is the speakeasy. In order to enter the speakeasy, you'll need to answer the riddle. I thought this was a clever way to get the crowd involved. The riddle is on their instagram or facebook. You can also get the password after ordering a drink from the bookstore. It'll be on the bottom of your receipt. My husband and I didn't go to the cigar lounge, but I can write about the bookstore and speakeasy. IMO - Thompson's gives off a different era vibe. With the waitress and the doorguys outfits to the details on the floor, it was well thought out. I probably saw too many scary movies so it kinda gave me an eerie feeling especially the restrooms. The speakeasy decor was a bit confusing for me. There were two different type of lights, chairs, and booths. It was a bit warmer than the bookstore. The cigar smell was still present but less noticeable in the speakeasy. The service was wonderful. Our waitress was very attentive and organized. The atmosphere was, overall, very chill and comfortable. The drink menu is the same for the bookstore and speakeasy. I thought the drinks were fresh, tasty, and refreshing. My husband will definitely be back to check out the cigar lounge. Thanks for a memorable experience!

Yelp
This bar is a major RIP-OFF! They pour you doubles (thats great) but do not tell you that you are paying for it! Oh? Want a mixer? $5 for coke, each drink! That puts a Crown and Coke at $17! We got the bill, WOW! That's Bull

Yelp
A hidden spot. You can't tell it's a bar from the outside. The decoration is classic and beautiful. The vibe is chill and relaxing. I love the music. The drinks are excellent.

Yelp
I didn't go to the speakeasy because I really enjoyed the atmosphere, service and how fun the 2 lovely bartenders were while I was sitting at the main floor bar. I will definitely go back when I'm in town. Update, I went back again because I was still in town the next night. This time I took some pics of my fun drinks

Carmen M.

Yelp
This speakeasy was really nice. You have to give a password before being lead in through a bookshelf. Apparently, there's another way to get in but didn't sound as cool. The drinks were amazing. I got the pink lady which was part of the nitrogen cocktails and had muddled raspberries on top. Worth every penny. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking to get a unique drink.

Yelp
Such a cool, unique place! Craft cocktails and the ambiance is the perfect vibe for relaxing and enjoying life's moments! Love the secret moving bookcase giving access to a hidden bar! We enjoyed drinks two nights in a row while on a business trip. Tip - nitrogen refill is on Wednesdays - best foamed drink ever!! Tuesday they were out of the nitrogen....

Yelp
Fun place to stop by for a craft drink. Interior was beautiful and cozy. Great place to meet up with friends before dinner or Basshall

Yelp
Terrible smell of cigar smoke from upstairs . Bartender never asked for my order, and preferred to talk only with the loud couple at the bar. Gave up and walked out. This was about 4:30-5 pm.
google avatar

Yelp
Great ambience , 3 floors to choose from. Street level bar is like a library living room. Really cozy and inviting. Fantastic bartenders and drinks. Upstairs cigar bar is very luxurious. The best thing is the air circulation! It's very comfortable for even a non-cigar smoker. You can enjoy drinks with a cigar , or not , and won't be bothered by smell or smoke. It's really lovely. Also there is a speakeasy in the basement. Only open in evenings. Special Note...happy hour cocktails prices are super cheap!

Yelp
My fiancée and I stopped by here a couple of weeks ago, only to discover that the speakeasy was at capacity, which they wouldn't let anymore people downstairs until some people left. Unfortunately, the bookstore was closed due to a private event that was finishing, so we waited at the entrance for a bit. As people began leaving the speakeasy, we were allowed downstairs. The first thing I noticed was the 80's R&B music that was playing. As a guy in my early 50's, I was impressed hearing that music since it brought back memories of when I was growing up in my teens. It's very rare to hear that music genre playing in a bar or lounge. It added to the nice chill ambiance as people were sitting in various sofas throughout the place. The barstaff was attentive despite being busy. I asked a bartender about making a special drink that he had never heard of before, which I told him the ingredients of how to make it. He made it to perfection and asked if he could have a straw sample. He enjoyed it and even had other staff take a straw sample, which they enjoyed it as well. All in all, we enjoyed the music and our time there and will come back again. The only downside was a bachelorette party had shown up towards the ens of the night, which the bride to be was being loud with her screams each time they took a shot. I'm surprised a manager didn't ask them to tone it down since it's one of the rules listed in the menu.

Chris L.

Yelp
Second time here and it was not the experience we had our first visit. The decor and space is great. That hasn't changed. But the presence and delivery of the bartenders was lackluster, especially for a cocktail/speakeasy venue. An Old Fashioned filled to over the top with ice cubes? Bartenders wearing t-shirts and baseball caps? Charging $19, $5 more than the menu price? Speakeasies and cocktails bars should carry some level of class and understanding of the cocktail world. Either we came on a bad night or things might be slipping?

Yelp
Written into the law in January 1919, the 18th Amendment prohibited the manufacture, sale, and transportation of intoxicating liquors in the United States. This precipitated a strange and troubled decade characterized by an unprecedented nationwide alcohol ban known as Prohibition, which lasted from 1920 to 1933. Almost overnight, hundreds of thousands of people lost their livelihoods as saloons, breweries, and distilleries were ordered to cease operations with immediate effect. Meanwhile, alcohol-deprived Americans soon found their way to illicit, underground bars known as speakeasies. Aren't we ALL glad that we don't have to sneak around to enjoy ourselves a beverage of our choice, however, if you like the ambiance of that era Thompsons the place to be!!! As a former concierge of the Historic Hilton Fort Worth feel free to contact me at grampsfu@yahoo.com.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and wonderful drinks!! Would definitely return. The secret door was evident but you still get the code on your receipt. Live this little speakeasy.

Yelp
During my most recent visit to Dallas for our annual charity golf tournament, my friend and co-founder introduced me to one of the best bars I've ever been to. With the increasing trend of speakeasies attaining critical mass, Thompson's stands out from the crowd. If you weren't with someone who knew it was there, you would probably walk right past it. I noticed something that I'll post in the pictures, that gave me a hint as to what we were going to do. The interior is set up like a library/lounge/lodge, and all the decor is lush and full of character. Each sitting area could be from a movie set. There are actual books that you can read in there, just but sure if you can buy them. The music was a mix of vintage compositions, jazz, and blues, which added to the ambiance. The list of cocktails is outstanding, with many classics and modern takes on old creations. A great list of Texas inspired concoctions, mixed and served by warm, friendly, and patient staff. In addition to having an awesome drink menu, they also boast an incredible happy hour, with includes their signature cocktails and high end liquors. While the main hosting area is decent and delicious, there is also an actual speakeasy, with a secret entrance, that you can also enjoy. It was closed for renovations when I visited, but I will be sure to check it out upon my return. This place attracts a wide range of clientele, because the appeal is timeless. Feelings of opulence can be experienced when in these types of surroundings. But this is the kind of place everyone is welcome and encouraged to enjoy themselves.... Quietly of course... This is a Bookstore.

Yelp
I came on June 9th with my friend for her birthday (we met up with some other friends there so- 6 of us all together) apparently they are re-doing the 'actual speakeasy' part where you enter through a book case. I was a bit disappointed that we couldnt check that part out when we went but our waitress said it should be open soon. The vibe was chill but because space was limited due to renovations ~ it was a bit crowded and very loud. Our 6 people couldn't really sit entirely together and because of the set up in the main bar area, it can kind of feel awkward/out of place with some people in the same seating area, not part of your party, or giving you weird looks. The drinks were okay (i was DD so i didnt order my own just a few sips from friends.) I had hoped for a bigger drink selection on the menu (possibly even a mocktail) but didnt see any. The bar service was kinda slow but it seemed mildly understaffed for how crowded the place was (even though they were renovating) The place had cool vibes and good potential. I could see it being really awesome if there was more space but if this place is on your list; i'd wait until they open the rest of the speakeasy to check it out.

Yelp
A nice spot to have to have a drink with friends. The ambience is perfect- cozy seating, beautiful decor, and an excellent selection of drinks, and BOOKS. We went on a weekend, and while there was a good crowd, it was not overwhelming. Parking wasn't too difficult, as we were able to park 2 blocks over. The drinks were great - we had sampled several, and loved that there was something for everyone. Whether you're a fan of something bourbon, something with gin, or something non alcoholic, they have a selection that is inclusive and unique. The downside was the service. Incredibly slow. We were able to grab a seat after about 15 minutes of standing, right in front of the bar staff. They took our order, and then the wait began. It was about 20 minutes since we had gotten our first drinks. The thing that got us is the drinks were made at the staffs convenience; they chatted for a few minutes, made drinks for themselves, and then we got a "oh so sorry for the wait" and THEN we were able to get our drinks. This went on for the duration of the night. At one point, there were several others wondering why the pace was so slow. When we went to close out, same deal- after they had their conversation, made more drinks for themselves, then we were finally able to close out. While the drinks were great and the ambience was great, the pain point was definitely the service. We may try again in a couple of weeks, but if we see the same staff that was there when we visited, we may opt for another spot.

Stephen S.

Yelp
Always spot on. Great drinks, great service. The atmosphere is incredible. It always busy, but somehow the space lends itself to not feeling "busy."

Yelp
Went on a hunt for the BEST EXPRESSO MARTINIS. This was it !!! Let's talk about the location and the setting. I absolutely love this place. It has a lounge feeling with a nice antique library vibe setting. We didn't go to the other part which we were told was a cigar lounge. We stayed on the lower level which was quite intimate and gorgeous. The Expresso martinis here were phenomenal and the service was even better. I forgot his name but he was so inviting and his positive energy made us feel welcomed and appreciated.

Yelp
Review #3 of 2024 lets go!!! I have been to Thompsons a few times now and it is very unique place to visit. The first floor when you walk in has a nice lounge/study area with a very laid back kind of energy. The main bar is at this level as well but what people really look for is the speakeasy in the basement. In the basement level there is another bar with a more upbeat atmosphere and great lounge areas. It is decorated with mirrors, lots of gold accent and lots of marble. Feels very glitz and glamor like a set from the Great Gatsby. You will need to know the password to get down here on the weekends but dont worry if you buy a drink at the main bar upstairs the password is on the receipt after you pay for your drink. Or you can always go on their social media and try to solve the riddle to gain access to the basement. They post it at the beginning of the week so you can take your time figuring it out. I was very happy that I solve the riddle on my first try when I went to visit solo. The password was Robin Hood, it honestly is not that hard to figure out if you know your classical literature..... or just use google haha. The third floor is set aside as a special events venue that people can rent out for wedding receptions, birthdays and other events. The 4th floor is by far my favorite because they have a cigar lounge up there. You dont need to know the password to come up here, password only required for the basement on the weekends. I take the elevator up to the 4th when I go, no stairs for me haha. The cigar lounge also has a bar up there with very knowledgeable staff. The first time I went was with a friend and in the middle of the week so we had a good one on one conversation with the girl working the counter. We asked her what her recommendations were for cigars and the type of cut we should get, what the difference in shape some of these were etc etc. Now I dont know much about cigars but I do enjoy one here and there so I opted for the Java brand that had a hint of chocolate flavor and wow I really did taste those chocolate notes. The drinks were very well crafted, the mixologist here really take care when preparing the drinks. The customer service this day was really good this day. The type of crowd that gathers upstairs is much older than what you would find at west 7th, think wedding after party or business people in town for a conference type of vibe. It is very laid back and the noise level is way less than your typical club, I can actually hear myself and the person next to me during a conversation. Love it. On other occasions I have come in on a weekend and the cigar lounge is packed and is hard to get service at the bar or service for the cigars. Service does eventually come around but just be prepared for a wait upstairs. Now parking is short hand here but the good news is that there is free street parking on the weekends and after 7pm mon-thurs. If you dont already know, back in January there was an explosion at a hotel downtown Fort Worth; well this happened across the street from Thompsons. Do not worry tho as time has opened up street and side walk access and no real damage was done to the speakeasy but it is now part of its history. Overall if you want a chill place to go with a smart, sexy, sophisticated vibe come to Thompsons and enjoy experience.

Yelp
This place is really cool. The drinks are affordable and a lot of my favorites are here. The staff is super chill and cool. The ambiance was just like the staff, cool and chill. 5 stars for sure.

Yelp
Pretty cool speakeasy in downtown Fort Worth! A friend and I decided to grab some pre-dinner cocktails and we were told to check out Thompson's Bookstore. The place is really unique and has a really cool vibe. I believe we were there around 4pm-ish on a Tuesday and the place was already full. They were definitely understaffed because it took a good 20 minutes to get our first drink and another 20 minutes to get the check. I also think the A/C was not working because the place was really HOT. Regardless of the waiting time and the toasty temperature, the drinks were excellent and the staff was great. I would definitely come back again during my next visit to Fort Worth!

Yelp
A cigar smokers paradise. The basement is a speak easy make sure you know the password to get past the doorman. Bar on the first floor and a cigar lounge in the penthouse. You can get the same craft cocktails on all the floors. The lounge had great drinks and reasonably priced cigars. The ambiance was just right foe conversation and music that wasnt blaring. I will definitely be back when I'm in town.

Yelp
I came here on a Thursday night thinking they would be open till 2 AM because of incorrect information that I had. I went down to the speakeasy bar and instantly recognized it as Vivid definitely one of the favorite bars I've ever been to. Over the years, this full corner location has been home to several bars that just weren't my style. I very much enjoyed my visit here. It was 15 minutes until they close so I got a drink before last call. Despite my coming in at the last minute, Rohan my bartender was very kind. He asked me what I wanted. I was very vague. I told him I wanted something with bourbon that wasn't too sweet. He fixed me up with a wonderful drink. It was made of Buffalo Trace bourbon, jalapeño agave, orange bitters and orange liqueur. My favorite bar in this area has been Eddie Vs. This may be my new favorite bar.
google avatar

Don C.

Yelp
Local bar that's comfortable inside - quit speak easy vibe is a good place for conversation with s group or one on one. Cocktails start around $14 and we'll drinks around $9. (House Whiskey was Wild Turkey or Jim Beam, the pour must have been around 1 oz based on my buzz.
google avatar

Julio R.

Yelp
Loved the theme concept, vibe, and service! I got the wrong drink but I can't blame them for that and from what I saw there was no food. Overall I love this place and will definitely go back! The only reason yes not a five star for me was because the price didn't reflect the quality as I would expect and it was very small. Those aren't huge complaints but I think a 4 star is still quite great! The bartender was very knowledgeable and took pride in making the drinks! It felt very personalized and I would say you know to come here at least once! Ok now bye bye then!
google avatar

Callie G.

Yelp
It was a unique fun spot but staff could be more kind and welcoming. It was like walk in and everyone stares at you. And then we find the way to the downstairs bar, go in, and the three bartenders exasperatedly say "don't open till 7pm"... The cigar bar was the best spot for us! Espresso martini and a relaxing atmosphere
google avatar

Kimberly H.

Yelp
Slight hint of cigars because of their cigar lounge. Bartenders aren't terribly on the ball. They rarely look up to acknowledge people surrounding the bar to order a drink. You end up standing there for several minutes waiting for some kind of eye contact. The couches in the place could use some refurbishing. If you don't practically fall through you'll be sitting on the frame. Liked the ambiance and decor. Nice place to hang and have drinks otherwise.
google avatar

Jamie C.

Yelp
Thompson's Bookstore is a cleverly themed cocktail bar that has a prohibition feel to it. We were a little disappointed that the downstairs speakeasy was under renovations when we went. Also, it's important to note that this is a cocktail bar (notices the bottles and bottles of liquor). They have bottles of beer available, but nothing on tap.
google avatar

Brandi K.

Yelp
This downtown Fort Worth bar is my favorite kind of place to get a drink. It's designed as a bookstore, a bit dark and brooding, complete with sofas and cozy chairs to lounge and sip with friends. It's quiet enough to have a conversation with your group. The cocktail list is creative and our drinks were delicious. Service was attentive but not bothersome. During the day it's perfect to have happy hour. At night be prepared for standing room only as this place is very popular. I heard they were working on their speakeasy portion and really looking forward to checking that out next time I'm in Fort Worth!

Danielle G.

Yelp
The drinks are wonderful at this charming spot. The service was a little slow but that's because it is so popular and busy.

Christy H.

Yelp
The atmosphere was amazing. The bookstore bar relaxing, comfortable, and the service was on point. The bartenders were very nice and friendly. Speakeasy room was extremely nice. And I loved the cigar lounge on the top floor. All levels was spot on. Will definitely be back.

Nora N.

Yelp
It was a pleasant experience. The service was great and although it's a small place and it was busy- my little group was able to converse comfortably.

Yelp
How about a cocktail with a side of Quaint, and Charming! That's the best way for me to describe Thompson's Bookstore. If you want to know the best places to go for a cocktail, ask Hospitality, and Entertainment industry professionals, and they will definitely point you in the right direction. Entering, you're transported back in time. The cozy furniture, diverse clientele, and assorted literature, create the perfect ambiance for stimulating conversations. Our bartenders were a delight, and really helped us select the perfect Japanese whiskey for the night. Interesting, they offer pours by the oz. Good to know if you're watching your budget. You can go crazy on Wednesdays, when everything is half off. Enjoy yourself at Thompson's bookstore! Maybe you'll find me at the bar, with a book, and cocktail! Xoxo Lorenzo

Yelp
Everything is great. My happy hour hangout when I'm in the area. Ambiance, service, drink selection, and specialty cocktails.
google avatar

Kevin D.

Yelp
This place used to be magnificent, the bartenders dressed the part, the service was amazing... over the years and the last few visits... it's just crap. The bartenders have shit attitudes no matter how nice you are to them. I'll go elsewhere.
google avatar

Daisy S.

Yelp
Amazing spot! This place is a cute little hidden gem. Once you order cocktails at the bar you can ask the bartender for the speakeasy password. The bookstore is charming and has really great dim lighting. There are plenty of spaces to sit and mingle!
google avatar

Katy R.

Yelp
Downtown FTW gem. Walk in to a quite, beautifully decorated space with a unique cocktail menu. You can then head down to the speakeasy (assuming you know the secret password) or up to the event area or alllll the way up to the cigar lounge. Stairs or elevator is your choice but either way be sure you explore all levels for the varying vibes. The bar staff make so excellent drinks so all around just a great bar in the city.

Brooke P.

Yelp
Went w my husband and friend to the downstairs speakeasy. I'm pregnant so my husband asked for my water in a wine glass so I could feel included and the bartender said they don't use this soda gun all that much so it's probably not clean and then proceeded to give me my water from said dirty soda gun... just gross :(

Troy W.

Yelp
I love this place. My girlfriend and I went there and the drinks were strong AF. So strong we stopped arguing and rekindled our relationship. Will definitely consider going back!!

Yelp
Great place to come for some creative cocktails. Bartenders are very friendly, engage the customers and really take care in their craft. We did not get to see the downstairs speakeasy, but the bookstore decor is great. Drinks ranged from the classics with a twist to something smoked and new. Large selection to choose from.

Yelp
This place is definitely a vibe. Main floor is a cool bar with great decor. Upstairs is another bar with a cigar lounge. On the main floor there's a secret entrance to the Speakeasy downstairs. I got a great laugh watching my friends try to get the door open. All 3 levels are classy with grown and sexy vibe. Plus, they have a great happy. Good prices and exceeded extended hours.

Yelp
Thompson's Bookstore creates a very unique experience for a bar! A very laid back lounge and speakeasy environment where you can easily have conversation without it being too loud. Our server was great and super sweet, and despite how busy it was on a Saturday night we didn't have to wait that long! The drink menu is full of creative cocktails as well as go to classics, I feel like there is something for literally everyone. 10/10 would recommend this place!

Yelp
Thompson's didn't disappoint. I like how it was a more laid-back type speakeasy...some can be pretentious, but not here. Bartender was nice, made honest recs and great drinks. Bonus was the Sunday happy hour, I think the classics were 6$. I got a classic and a specialty cocktail, both whiskey-based and both strong and satisfying. Honey got an old fashioned and something else (I gotta do better with remembering names) and he liked them both. Nice lil Sunday buzz! Ok, maybe DFW isn't so bad. Signed, a (transplant) Houstonian ;)

Yelp
We really enjoyed the relaxing vibe and decor of Thompsons Bookstore. After enjoying a few cocktails. We went to the 3rd floor and enjoyed a cigar with a few more drinks. My girlfriend enjoyed the Espresso Martini and I had the Old Fashion.

Yelp
Two companions and I visited Thompson's Bookstore on May 4th, 2023, at about 7:30PM, due to pictures and reviews on Yelp. When we arrived, there was an extremely strong lacquer smell emanating from the establishment. We entered and inquired about that and were told it was because of a current floor refinish above them. Okay, we'd have one drink and leave. I ordered two boulevardiers from the cocktail menu ($10) and inquired as to which bourbon would be used. The bartender replied that they'd use Jim Beam Black, which I dislike, so I asked that he use Redemption Rye instead (a $24 bottle, but MUCH better). He replied that there would be a small upcharge. No worries. I figured this to be about $2, as the bottle price is not much different. The drinks are delivered, he asks for my card, and rings me up. When he handed me the bill, it was apparent he charged me for four 1oz pours of redemption at $15.50 each, which made the total tab, for TWO drinks, $67. I immediately told him that he'd made an error. He was unable to modify the bill, for some reason. To spare my companions the extra time required of me to deal with this at the time, I chose to simply handle it the next day. I wrote my original review and the owner, as well as the GM, contacted me directly to resolve the matter. They were polite and professional, apologized for the inconvenience, and refunded the appropriate amount to my CC. This is how businesses build a loyal customer base, by listening and responding with appropriate action. I applaud the owner and her GM. Thank you for your integrity. I'll be back to TB when in Fort Worth.

Yelp
I'm sorry that I have overlooked an review of this establishment...they deserve not just the 5 Star rating I gave bit more importantly kudos in the form of a written review. Establishments that specialize in Bartending and do not fall back on food or some other distraction are becoming more popular however my guess is Thomason's is one of the early entrants in this space and have perfected their service and product at a level rarely paralleled. I had nothing but a Del Maguey Mezcal but having consumed a number of differing brands, as well as Tequila's, Sotols and Racillos I must say that they apparently have chosen the brand (and selection as there are a number of Del Magueys) which is not just reasonably priced but of superior taste. In addition is a discussion (more like academic debate with PhD bartenders quite frankly) that can be as much entertainment as the establishment itself which is a sophisticated version of a neighborhood bar...the Harvard or MIT type... In any case if you seek expertise and a unique experience in mixology...it is impossible to have done so without a visit to this fine establishment. It is epic.

Yelp
I rarely make it out to Fort Worth and Thompson's may be reeling me in for future visits. The speakeasy underground vibe spoke to me, otherwordly in the best way possible. Perfect for after-dinner cocktails, and buying your friends a new round or two of liquid courage.
