The Best Restaurants in San Marcos | Eater Austin

"More than just a butcher shop, this counter-service restaurant is one of the town’s few spots to find low-intervention wine and spontaneously fermented beer. Pair a glass with a deli sandwich — the pastrami is a fantastic combination of half a pound of hand-carved pastrami brisket, Swiss, and yellow mustard on rye. The rustic convenience store style is also ideal for a quick stop to grab what you need, pick up some food, and be on your way." - Kimberly Olivas

I’ve been coming every single time I visit San Marcos. Stopping by on a Saturday for their BBQ specials is a pleasant reminder that great BBQ is everywhere in Texas. But, for lunch I always grab the pastrami Ruben.

There is no better feeling than when you come to a local shop that treats you well and has killer food. If you’ve never had that feeling then you need to come here. Locally sourced meat and produce. To die for sandwiches all week. Killer bbq on Saturdays. (Try their chicken salad before they sell out - it goes out fast) Sure, if you want to drive through Austin traffic I’m sure you can find comparable BBQ at a place packed to the brim - by all means go ahead. Why go anywhere else when there’s good BBQ here in town? I’ve been to Bill Miller’s and Black’s BBQ in San Marcos. Forget about them. I wish I had spent that money here. When you come here the food is fresh and the flavor is REAL. Just ask their knowledgable staff about their product and let your stomach do the rest. I RARELY leave reviews but this place deserves the love.

Google
First time visit. The pastrami sandwich was incredible! I would put it up against any NY deli! Rich, flavor, just the right amount of mustard. Nicely toasted bread, not soggy. Will be back. Want the Ruben next.

I have loved her for 10 years and I never heard of this place! I’m glad I came in! The chicken salad sandwich was DELICIOUS but there’s no seating inside. You can sit outside and eat! EVERYTHING there is local! Juices were yummy too! Their meats are also local. They have beef tallow too!!! I will definitely come back! Saturdays are BBQ too! Go early bc they sell out quick!

I’m a total pepper head and obsessed with hot sauces 🔥 One of my absolute favorites is from 36 General—it’s not spicy, but the flavor is next-level. They had a booth at the New Braunfels for Farmers Market this weekend, so of course I had to stop by and grab my sauce! The guys working the stand were amazing—super kind and welcoming. I hadn’t ever tried their meat offerings so I had to sample their brisket, sausage, and pastrami… and it was absolute top notch. I couldn’t leave without splitting a pastrami sandwich with my son 😅 Quick shoutout to Cayden and Jengo for helping us pivot when they found out my son was dairy-free. He didn’t get to enjoy the beautiful pastrami sando because it had milk bread, but he was just as happy with a slice of Three Six brisket! Total pros 🙌

Google
I am so glad that I found this place. I was looking for good pork belly around San Marcos area and was able to buy it in a very good price. Brandon was very kind and explained meat very well. I am so excited to try them out soon!

Google
Picked up some pimento cheese and smoked chicken salad at the Farmer’s Market in NB. Pimento is solid but their chicken salad is the best I’ve had! Plan a visit next time we’re in San Marcos!

Casey Willson

Google
The sandwich / bowl hours are short, but it’s some of the best food I’ve *ever* had. Best pastrami. Best smoked chicken salad. The pimento cheese is very good too. Best lunch in San Marcos!

Yelp
Floor's been rearranged again with a full second cabinet for the meats. One's serious cuts of meat and sausages, and the original is now charcuterie, or was when I visited. They have more grocery items now across different cultures/flavors, especially sauces. Still lots of meats in the upright freezer, the seafood enchiladas have returned in the low freezer, veg is in the corner near the dairy, the familiar in-house spicy mustard and chicken salad next to Texas milk and Irish butter. Bliss. Not a fan of the 4% service fee since you're no longer allowed to pay in cash to avoid it, but the quality of goods here is such it will take more than that for me to swear off. This visit I picked up beautiful, flavorsome veg (including fun stuff like golden cauliflower) and the usual fine quality eggs. Garlic scapes have gone into nearly everything this week and I learned dandelion greens are great in BLTs. Even if you don't splurge on a big item, your meals will taste better when you treat yourself to a few things here.

Yelp
I ordered the chicken salad from this location via Farmhouse. The chicken salad is described as "A perfect balance of smoky chicken, creamy mayo, tangy lemon, and a touch of jalapeno spice makes this an ideal companion to crackers, sandwich bread, and tortilla chips alike. Three-Six General sources from small farmers and ranchers across Texas. Their meats are always 100% pasture-raised and free from any hormones or antibiotics. " - Farmhouse This chicken salad is absolutely divine. It has simple elements and no unnecessary additives. The only thing that can be tasted in this chicken salad is a bit of mayo, red onion, lemon juice, and jalapeño. It requires no "extra" seasonings. I am not a big fan of mayo, but for those who are, they will find this salad is light on the mayo. I did add EVOO to the mix to spread the chicken salad across sourdough bread. Outside of this chicken salad, I've purchased various cuts of meat and cheese from this shop. Each item I've purchased here seems to be better than the next. #supportlocal

Yelp
This sandwich is no joke. I got this at the SFC Farmers Market at Republic Square. Unfortunately, they aren't located here anymore BUT they also have a restaurant in San Marcos that is a butcher shop. I'd definitely recommend checking it out!! They make their pickles so of course I added extra. I also added their homemade mustard, onions, and bbq sauce. They get their bread specially made for them from a local baker and it sopped up all of the juices from the brisket and the bbq sauce so well. It didn't get soggy!! The meat was amazing. It was so soft and juicy, I felt like I didn't deserve this sandwich it was that good. ‍

Yelp
Fun place with an eclectic variety of items in this shop. We picked up some sliced pastrami, chicken and ham. The staff was kind enough to let us have a sample of each meat and they are delicious! I chose a protein rice bowl for lunch and it was outstanding! Highly recommend a visit here! Staff are very knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating.

Yelp
Came here with Mrs. R. and we stocked up on a whole lot of food to graze on over the holidays. We got three kinds of charcuterie, one with fennel seed, one with pistachio, and tarufo. We also got goat cheese gouda, manchego, some of their smoked chicken salad, some everything bagel flavored gluten-free almond crackers, and some popcorn chips. We also got a loaf of tallow bread and chili. All were delicious, but that is par for the course at 36G. I could, after all, live on their chicken salad alone. I'll take special time out to compliment the goat gouda. It was as delicious as any gouda, but also as intense as goat milk and its related products are. Seriously: super- intense, super good. All if you want quality artisanal food products, you can't go wrong with 36 General.

Yelp
Services was great. Food was great even, gave bigger portions than advertised. Will definitely return. smoke flavored wings had a great taste the sauce was also great. Thank you

Yelp
The smoked brisket sandwiches that they serve on Sundays are to die for, and I love that they sometimes have a booth at the food market. The employees are always super nice!

Yelp
Every time I come here I'm more impressed with their offerings. My husband and I got some sliced brisket and pastrami for some lunch sandwiches and it melts in your mouth. We also got some Italian Sausages and Hungarian Sausages to make for dinner. They were massive and so flavorful! The Italian was my favorite and even my picky kid loved it. So much better than anything you could find in a chain grocery store. Plus it's not packed full of preservatives. The employees who got our order together were friendly and knowledgeable. They happily answered all my sons questions about spices and their fancier deli meats that he didn't recognize by the label. Taking the time to not only pronounce them for him but to explain the type of meat it was. I'm looking forward to trying their restaurant in SA sometime soon.

Yelp
New to the area and wanted to get some meat from a locally owned butcher shop so I found this place on Yelp. Well we were not disappointed! Pretty small bit don't let that scare you. Looks like it's sibling owned and they are really nice and helpful. Since it was a Saturday, they had smoked meat ready to taste. The brisket was good. Very tender and you can taste the flavor of the meat. Then we tried the pastrami and we could not believe the flavor. It was really tender as well but it was also seasoned just right. They also let us try some beef sausage and it was good as well! We settled on the pastrami and brisket and wished they had bread to make sandwiches right then! Finally got a seasoned flank steak for beef fajitas later this week. Will let you know when we go back to get their $100 worth of meat for $80. Need to clear out the freezer a little the. We will be back! You don't want to miss this one if you are in the area.

Yelp
ordered their pastrami through farmhouse delivery. It arrived frozen, which was weird, but ok. Few days at the refrigerator and finally i opened it. It was only fat!! almost without meat. Fantastic. So the frozen thing was only to make knife slice harder so it could possibly make an impression of meat in it. Outstanding marketing plan, But, you did not take into account one detail: people do understand the difference between frozen and not frozen by TEMPERATURE, Karl! You are a disgusting business.

Daniel G.

Yelp
Great quality meats and produce. The lunches sandwiches are phenomenal, but the pastrami rueben stands out like none other!

Yelp
HOLYCOW - This was some of the moistest, juiciest, tastiest, and prettiest brisket I've ever had! While walking through the Pearl Market I came across this vendor's booth and the lady there explained how they smoke their brisket and season it and offered me a sample - I fell in love immediately - It was outstanding! I ended up buying a half pound and sitting down to eat it, even though I wasn't even hungry. If you're in this place, stop in here and grab some... Check their site, they have locations where they'll be.

Yelp
Always a favorite place to go. Great meats, fun and new healthy foods to try, lots of cider in the fridge, supports local farms, and always friendly staff. I also love the fact that they have so much allergy friendly foods available. And a little bit less expensive than the San Marcos co op health food store.

Yelp
Met Matti Bills...owner of Three Six General at the Mermaid Festival and she was serving up some "melt in your mouth" smoked pastrami and brisket. I was extremely impressed with the quality and flavors of what Matti was sharing with the crowd, she knows how to smoke meat to perfection.

Yelp
Good little place. Wish it was bigger sometimes cuz it's so good. Staff is always friendly

Yelp
They may not have every thing you want but you'll want some of everything they have! Only place I could find guanciale... the meat case looked incredible and the smoked meats looked amazing. Friendly and helpful.

Yelp
This tiny storefront hides a miniature delicatessen. I have the impression that almost all of their goods are "locally sourced" = made in the general Austin area. We stopped in for the grand opening and enjoyed their delicious brisket and ham, plus two kinds of blue cheese. They have a variety of meats, and the smoker is on the premise. This week I happened to be in the area, so I picked up some sliced ham, three different kinds of sausage, plus one amazing looking white patty pan squash. This morning, I served the Hungarian sausage and can highly recommend that. Our little household will not be big enough to keep them in business, so please stop in, buy something you have never had before, and give your support for local food.

Yelp
Really fantastic. The smoked chicken salad is something you're gonna want to have around for lunchtime and a quick dinner. So so good!

Frankie C.

Yelp
The meat itself is ok, if very expensive. I'd ask to smell it, though, as last time the beef I bought smelled like cheese. The employees don't know prices, give wildly disparate prices by guessing. One time it was $5 a lb, one time 22! The place has a sort of hippie, I-don't-care vibe. Not for me.

Shari Allen W.

Yelp
Visited this restaurant located in the Pearl Food Hall on a Saturday afternoon. Atmosphere was in keeping with the venue. Ordered their Basic Pastrami sandwich expecting some good meat and bread. The order was ready pretty quickly but when we opened the sandwich to add some sauce, we saw at least 50% of the "meat" was fat! It was very disappointing to throw away half of our meal dollars. The bread was just plain sandwich sliced rye, which was rather dry. Won't come back to this restaurant; there are better options.

Yelp
Breakfast taco with brisket. Add onion and bbq sauce. Friendly staff. They offered brisket to our baby and she loved it. The tortillas taste buttery and homemade. Overall great but it is $5 and Taco isn't so big. Egg is over medium. Brisket is juicy with good flavor.

Bud T.

Yelp
I am upping my previous review to a 5. Worlds best pastrami and baked beans are also great! Still not a place to sit down for lunch but the guy brought it to me as soon as I pulled up. You must go here if you are as big a pastrami buff as I

Matt S.

Yelp
This is a review of the booth at the Pearl Farmer's market. Can't say enough good things about them. The staff are just so friendly and knowledgeable about their food. The brisket or pastrami sandwiches they make on the spot are melt in your mouth delicious. My personal favorite is the smoked chicken salad. I like to pick up a pint to go and it makes several sandwiches throughout the week. Highly, highly recommended giving them a try.

Yelp
My weekly visit to Three Six General is one of the highlights of my week. These folks really filled a niche. You don't have to be a foodie to appreciate what they offer, but if you are, be prepared to fall in love. Don't waste any time. Get over there and see what a real, authentic artisanal butcher shop and food market can be.

Yelp
I love it!! The Smoked Chicken Salad and the Sage & Turmeric Sausage are my absolute favorites. The owners have genuine love of food, and it's reflected in their craft. I highly recommend and would give it one more star if I could.

Yelp
Visited today during the grand opening celebration and sampled both the pastrami and the brisket and both were excellent. Left with a container of the smoked chicken salad and chunk of local blue cheese. Can't wait to go back and try some of the deli meats. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable! A nice addition to the area.

Yelp
Picked up ground beef and bacon this weekend from them and made grilled burgers. The meat and bacon were both delicious. When I asked Ross which one he liked better, he said "together". The fat content made for a very flavorful burger. I made homemade brioche buns and caramelized onions and we devoured them. Highly recommend treating yourself to meat from here!

Yelp
Go now! Drop your phone and go buy everything you can here before they run out! I am going to have to fight th urge to stop by here daily.
