The Austin Smashburger Power Rankings - Austin - The Infatuation

"The double smashburger at Thunder Chief is one of the biggest ones on this list, with wagyu beef patties that somehow take on an intense crispy char while staying perfectly pink throughout. That makes this taste more like a classic backyard burger than the paper-thin patties we tend to associate with smashburgers, but make no mistake—this well-seasoned meat has indeed been smashed. If you’re going to make the silly decision to use wagyu beef in a smashburger, this is how to cook it. Your Order: Double Smash ($13). The beefiest of them all." - nicolai mccrary

Downtown Austin Bar Stagger Lee Closed on Rainey Street | Eater Austin

"I noted that the Rainey Street location of the American-ish restaurant closed on March 3 alongside Stagger Lee, but Thunder Chief’s other location at the Lavaca Street Bar on South Lamar remains open." - Nadia Chaudhury

Thunder Chief at Lavaca Street Bar - Review - South Lamar - Austin - The Infatuation

"Thunder Chief is the name of the kitchen at Lavaca Street Bar on South Lamar dishing out fried chicken sandwiches, smashburgers, and other bar foods. The double smashburger is massive, with wagyu beef patties that somehow take on an intense crispy char while staying perfectly pink throughout. That makes this taste more like a classic backyard burger than the paper-thin patties we tend to associate with smashburgers, but make no mistake—this well-seasoned meat has indeed been smashed. We saw this place off TikTok and had to try it out! We brought our two young kids and the people there were super friendly. Not too busy. Started to pick up as we left. We got the smash burger, birria tacos, grilled cheese, beef tacos, Korean chicken taco, gf platter and Parmesan fries! I can’t say enough how great the food was. Fast to order and easy. Order at the front or at your table! Came out fast, hot and fresh! We were all happy with what we got as well as what each one of us got because we clearly had to try it all! Definitely will be back! And the lady at the front that took our order was super sweet, helpful and a great vibe!

Great burger. I would recommend catching them when they are on the weekly special. $12/$14 for this burger may or may or be “worth it” depending on your own opinion. But the meat is very flavorful and the ingredients fresh. Service was very friendly.

Thunder Chief is a delightful restaurant inside lavaca Street bar. They have a different food special every night of the week. The guy that does the restaurant running, takes your order and runs the food, he was super friendly and very nice. Burger Monday is excellent. They have a $5 smashburger, but I recommend adding the second Patty for another $4 bucks making it a total of $9. It's an excellent smash burger and totally mealworthy. You can get a beer at the Lavacca Street bar, no real discounts there though. I think the beer I got was a 512 IPA and it was $9 nine bucks? Monday: Smashburger special Tuesday: $3 crunchy tacos Wednesday: 50% off wings Thursday: Throwback Thursday, not sure exactly what this means in terms of a food deal?? Friday / Fryday: Fried chicken sandwich special, five bucks I think Weekend: Something called a game day special, not sure what this means in terms of food discounts?? Parking: You can park in the deck around back.

Food was amazing and the atmosphere was pretty energetic! A Sports bar with some pretty damn good options. I got the patty melt with garlic aioli and truffle fries, and my partner got the southwest chicken Ceasar salad. Everything was great and they have all types of specials for every day of the week. I'd recommend this spot for a good bite and a drink as well! We will be back!

Such an amazing hidden gem. I ask for a custom hot sauce, and i get a custom hot sauce. Ordered a crispy chicken sandwich, which alone was one of the best I’ve had, and curly fries with spicy ketchup. I love how they take culinary chances upon request. Some of my favorite people as well. Thank you thunder chief for never letting me down, whether my food is for to go or to eat there.

Google
Smashburger was perfect, their pickles are fresh made and nice and crisp. The burger had nice crisp edges on the patties. 5/5 Maybe an unsung hero though, the Patty Melt was very good. The bread was think fresh baked and the sandwich was massive. I added picked for some texture. 5/5

Good food here. I had the buffalo chicken sandwich, the gochujang wings, and the curly fries. I also ordered thunder sauce which tasted like a variation of a thousand island dressing. All of the chicken had a unique flavor. It’s not my favorite but it was still really good. The chicken was cooked well and it was good quality. I probably won’t come back for chicken but two thumbs up. The staff was very friendly.

Everything in the menu is wonderful. Lovely small business inside a great sports bar. The chicken nugz, k-pop nachos, and patty melt are incredible favs. They have irish nachos seasonally that i’d sell my left foot for. When you order to go they pack everything separately to make sure nothing gets soggy which is such a nice touch. They also have awesome daily specials (for example $5 burgers monday, $1 wing wednesday, $5 chicken sandwich fridays). I’ve been coming here since they opened inside lavaca street bar and will keep coming back as long as they’ll have me!

Yelp
Stopped in for the Friday lunch special. $5 chicken sandwich. You have my attention. Find the menu and order through the QR code. The bar wasn't very busy. Service was prompt from the bartender and the kitchen. Thunder Chief is only open for lunch Friday, Saturday, Sunday. They have great deals running all week for when you get off work or dinner. There was a decent variety of beers on tap. Multiple screens in the bar. Not too quiet. Not too loud. My sandwich was amazing. Crispy but still juicy chicken. I added lettuce and tomato. I'll definitely stop in again.

Yelp
Thunder Chief Burgers is a burger joint/sports bar that serves up a really great smash burger. It's won a few awards recently and has joined the Austin food scene with a bold attitude and a no-frills approach, this spot is definitely worth checking out if you're a burger enthusiast. My Overall Rating - 4 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - This is your typical sports bar setup. There are plenty of bar height tables and chairs and TVs all around. But it was strangely empty on a Saturday in late May. Other than the empty vibe, the setup is casual and straightforward--clearly focused more on the food than the frills. NOTE: There were no paper towels in the men's room. 1/2 Stars. Service - Each table had QR code you scan then order from your phone. Once you order, your food is brought out quickly to your table by the friendly staff. Fast, efficient, and with a smile. No complaints here! 1 Star. Food - I ordered the smash burger. Thunder Chief absolutely nails the Maillard reaction--those crispy, caramelized edges on the patty were perfection. The burger was juicy, flavorful, and had just the right amount of char. It's clear they know what they're doing. I also appreciated the simplicity of the toppings, which let the beef shine. My curly fries were ok and forgettable. One of the best smash burgers I've had, but also one of the priciest. $15 for smash burger with caramelized onions + $4.50 for fries. 1 1/2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. Despite the quiet vibe during my visit, the burger alone is enough to bring me back. I'd love to try it again when the place has a bit more energy--maybe during one of their $5 Smash Burger Mondays.

Yelp
Let me start by saying this place is fire. I don't give out 5 stars unless the food really impresses me and the first taste of the nachos had my eyes popping out of my head goofy-style. The sauce/cheese/chicken combo is undefeated. This is the first time the Smashburger wasn't the star of the show. everything else came second to those nachos, they have changed the way I look at food.
