World Famous Hotboys’ Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwiches Blast Off in Uptown Oakland | Eater SF

"I saw the SF Chronicle provocatively ask whether Tijuana Restaurant in Fruitvale might be the best old restaurant in America, arguing that reliably excellent, older spots are often overlooked; the piece highlights a mariscada plate—steamed mussels, clams and a quarter crab plated along with pieces of octopus, shrimp, squid and scallops that have been simmered until tender then seared until crisp—as the restaurant’s pièce de résistance." - Luke Tsai

I’m a regular taker-outer here & the breakfast burrito is UNBELIEVABLE! Huge, delicious, fast, great price, need I say more??? One time, the cook literally came out of the kitchen to say hi & send me off with the burrito she’d just made me. I love this place! Support them!!

Google
This is the best restaurant in Oakland ca the sea food is very good especially the mariscada we always go every time we visit my family in the bay area.

Google
The food wasn't good. It didn't taste authentic Mexican food. The dish that I ordered was Chilaquiles, and it was one of the worst I ever had. The place looks somber and not inviting . The service was ok, but there was a language barrier since the servers only speak Spanish or very little English. I will not return to this restaurant.

Roberto T.

Google
As a Mexican. I rate this place 5 stars. Will be back. Oakland strong and standing

Google
I ordered off the taco truck I didn't know what to order it was already late the one thing I picked was about as amazing as I can explain service was absolutely excellent very caring and concerning about how to make my food I will always come here it's quesadilla was top level for the price I'm coming here every time I go to Oakland I appreciate you

The meat in the burrito was a huge problem. I ordered a veggie burrito due to dietary restrictions, but after a few bites, I realized I was chewing on meat. I felt sick just thinking about it—what if it was pork? When I called for a refund, they said I had to bring the burrito back. Who has time for that? On top of that, my friend’s order wasn’t even made because they claimed her payment didn’t go through, even though she paid over the phone. Instead of fixing it, they just kept questioning her. The place seems family-run, but they’re nitpicky and unhelpful. Maybe dining in is better, but I wouldn’t go back.

Yelp
I just want to say...I dislike leaving negative reviews but that's why platforms like this exist. On that note I ordered a shrimp burrito because I was craving one and I must say this is the WORST BURRITO I'VE EVER HAD First off it was a wet burrito which I'm not a fan of Second when I cut into it there were shrimp tails still on the first bite I took and it was overcooked and chewy For 21$ I was highly upset If there's one positive thing it is the salsa Also I think the people working there could be a little more attentive because I walked in and there was no one at the front I ordered through GrubHub and I immediately requested a refund so I hope they accept it

Yelp
After over 13 years of loyal business, we've decided to never set foot in this restaurant again--and we want people to know why. The place has gone downhill. The floors are greasy and clearly never cleaned. The surrounding area is unsafe, with prostitutes openly working the same corner this restaurant sits on. Still, we looked past it. Why? Because the servers treated us well, and we believed in supporting a place we had history with. But today crossed the line. There was a discrepancy with a menu item--something that could've been easily discussed. The male co-owner, who we've always respected, wasn't there. Instead, we dealt with the female co-owner, who treated us with complete disrespect. She spoke to us like we were beneath her. Rude, condescending, and completely unprofessional. We were shocked. After all these years, to be talked down to and belittled like that? It was insulting. Humiliating. Absolutely unacceptable. We're done. This restaurant doesn't deserve our business, and based on how we were treated, they don't deserve yours either. We will never recommend this place again.

Yelp
I was really craving' a steak & shrimp burrito, they made it happen at a little extra cost well worth it, the service is great as always, the ambiance is laid back and peaceful , I like highly recommend this place but you already know, they are the best in Oakland hands down

Yelp
So I came here twice the first time the taquito (flauntas) were fine. Little crispy but ok .. my partner enjoyed his burrito I came here. Second time and ordered enchilada tacos and burrito for a few people.. and this experience was not as swell.. the flavor of the enchilada were very basic and the tacos toppings were served separately the steak was very fatty .. the chicken was fresh There was a spoiled smell inside which should have been telling .. I would probably only order the flauntas in the future

Yelp
I can't tell you how many times I've driven by this place and not given it a second look. It is the definition of tucked. The signage on the place is super minimal. For years, I've heard of my uncle and other extended family members talking about eating here. After a very disappointing day trying to catch a glimpse of the Blue Angels, we trudged back to Oakland in search of some grub. The typical question: where should we go eat? Seafood is always a win in my book, so we made our way to Tijuana's because it was relatively close to Jack London in comparison to other seafood places we like. We parked in a private lot between the restaurant and the tire shop on the opposite corner. The hostess seated us in the main seating area, bending the corner to the right beyond the main entry. The front seemed like it was a prep/to-go area with only a few chairs to sit in while you wait. Anywho, we sat down in a table of four for our group of three. My son had a burger with fries and my dining partner and I split the large "mariscada" aka mixed seafood platter. I also ordered two sopes a la carte. The sopes tastes just like my moms! Thin and crispy, not doughy and undercooked, just how I like them. The steak was well seasoned and thoroughly cooked, no pink for me! The salsa was definitely homemade tasting, none of that canned stuff. Now, the mariscada I ordered was flavored "Al ajillo" which means with garlic and boy did it have garlic! Lots of sliced garlic cloves with a dash of lime to contrast the bite of the garlic. I really enjoyed the large segments in comparison to the "mojo de ajo" which is more like a scampi sauce. The seafood was amazing with all components perfectly cooked and seasoned. To my surprise they used the large scallops instead of the small one. I would have like to see a little more shrimp but overall a good mix of octopus, clams, shrimp, scallops, mussels and a few crab claws. We also ordered two aguas frescas, horchata and hibiscus/jamaica. I had a michelada which was pretty good. It would have been a tad better if it didn't have the lemon concentrate but it wasn't overly bitter like at other places. I would definitely come back here. Just make sure to sign the receipt (even though it says signature not necessary) if you leave a tip or a else the servers won't get it per the restaurant policy. Our server had to chase us to our car to make sure we signed and I felt awful but she was super sweet about explaining why. Come by and check it out!!

Yelp
I placed an order thru Grubhub at 1000am, Bean and Cheese Enchiladas with steak. Guacamole added on the side. Order arrived on time, everything was intact. Food is delicious. Seasoning just right, not overly salty. This is my 3rd order during the Covid-19 shelter in place. (Grubhub offered $5 discount)

Aaron G.

Yelp
The worst restaurant I've been too in my life. We were in the bay after 20 years. I remember my mom would take us for the mariscada. The prices are way over exaggerated, I understand things have go up but 35 for an Aguachile. That is ridiculous. Most places is at $20-25. The place is old and nasty and hasn't been re touched at all in 20 years. Very dissapointed. The server was great but definitely will never go back.

Yelp
Caldo de Chile Relleno! Yes! You heard me...Chile Relleno Soup is served at this Mexican restaurant. My mom used to make it this way. It was good. The broth was taste and served with Homemade Corn tortillas (super soft) The place is not upscale at Allan's the outside curb appeal is not nice at all but the Caldos are popular here. I'd come back again for the Caldo de Chile a Relleno Soup.

Yelp
Always friendly staff great value and generous servings. Place is always clean. Coming here for years and the quality hasn't changed

Yelp
I've been coming here for decades now with my family. The epitome of an authentic Mexican hole in the wall restaurant that has stood the test of time with the same ownership. Parking can be rough at times but on the weekends the small lot between them and a tire shop is available. The area is kinda sketchy but you shouldn't have any issues The food has gone from great to ok to great and right now with my recent experience on mothers day I'd say they're ok right now. The sopes is my go-to every time, still better than anywhere else that I can think of. Fluffy, airy, moist and flavorful is how I like em. Some people prefer dry, crunchy sopes and that's on them, this isn't the place for that lol. They carry a variety of seafood plates/platters mariscos that I highly recommend too, fresh and tasty. My family often order the whole fried snapper fish de Diablo which has a nice spicy kick to it. Pretty big portion and cooked to perfection.. Tijuanas won't win any style points, but its a better than most establishment for a meal to hit the spot.

Yelp
East bay burrito review #8 First taste - 5/7 Meat 4/7 Rice 3/7 Beans 4/7 Chesse 3/7 Tortilla 5/7 Salsa 6/7 Overall 4/7 rounded down. The burrito was large. They gave two choices in salsa and a bunch of chips, so that was pretty value for dollar. The rice was pretty tasteless and the meat and beans were so so.

Yelp
I eat here with my mother all the time and they serve amazing food but I should have checked my TOGO before I left. I never had to do this before cause this never happened once. I PAID 16$ for this?!?! I don't think so. Good to know how they treat loyal customer. La cagada!

Yelp
DELIVERY ONLY I just had to order the same food twice to make sure the first time was not a crazy miracle of deliciousness. It was NOT! - Shrimp Burrito - PLENTY of shrimp! Real cheese not nacho cheese. But be prepared to either pass out from the size of the burrito or share/have left overs. Very delicious - Chips and salsa - plenty of chips that are crispy and not greasy and plenty of different kinds of salsa. I will 100% be ordering from here in the future. Happy to have found a great shrimp burrito place for a great price

Felipe M.

Yelp
Good service, BUT, I don't know if it's a new cook or they switched food vendors but the fryed fish was not good and they changed the shrimp in their ceviche , they need to go back to their old ways of cooking, I don't mind paying extra but I want them to cook like it was before

Yelp
La comida esta muy buena y el servicio es super amable. Nos encanto el restaurante. Muy recomendado!

Yelp
Mariscada is still delicious like I remembered, it had been over 10 years since so had it. It's still on point with ajillo or mojo de ajo! Keep up the great work Tijuana Staff and Chef! Me saludan Al Pato porfas!

Yelp
I am so going to miss this place. Recently relocated and visited this place before we moved. My fave was the Birria seca and the levanta muertos. The best part? Freshly hand made tortillas.
google avatar

Dee Z.

Yelp
This spot is located along the "stroll". If you drive too fast - you'll surely miss it. It's a family owned dive with expensive prices but authentic Mex food. The food is just hella good. I like the fact that the seafood is fresh and doesn't include food poisoning. My fav dish is the surf n turf which includes massive butterfly prawns sauteed in garlic and butter. The rib eye steak is cooked in its own juicy juice. On top of both are massively large half cut garlic cloves. This meal comes with a very fresh side salad with homemade thousand island dressing and a fat avacado slice. Rice and beans included. I get the whole pinto beans separate cuz I don't like them touching my other food items. This meal also comes with a thick butter garlic sauce and I definitely pass on that. But their pico de gallo is homemade and very different from any that I've had before. You get a choice of flour or corn hot tortillas. It's enough for two people or two dinners - unless you're a piglet. Free parking is adjacent to the building in a gate enclosure. I sit in my car and order which takes about 10-15 mins. They have inside dining if you ask nicely. Breakfast is the bomb too. My fav is crab omlette and it is just ridiculously DELISH and super fresh.

Yelp
Just ordered and devoured takeout from here! Everything is fresh and so delicious. Very generous with the sauces as well. If you got cravings, you won't go wrong with this spot.
google avatar

Pallavi K.

Yelp
Incredible enchiladas. The verde sauce is my favorite. The rice isn't vegetarian but the refried beans are! They will give you a nice side salad instead of rice.
google avatar

Yelp
Really great food and nice service, very big portions too! We ordered online and the food was ready quickly and all the items tasted really good.

Yelp
The food is great the employees or owner and wonderful and accommodating. I only ordered the fried fish. Fresh corn Tortillas. The location is the location. Get my food for pick up. The snapper big or small is the same price. It is what it is.

Yelp
Very good food I recommended this place good service reasonable price me and my wife was here and we love definitely I recommended this place
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Bomb seafood, incredible portion sizes, what more could you ask for? Slightly higher than average prices, easily made up for with the huge portion sizes. We got the fried red snapper in the garlic sauce which was super savory and thick and came in a massive aluminum tray (perfect to reuse!). We also got the Caldo de Mariscos 7 Mares (rich tomato soup with a serious variety and amount of seafood)! Everything was very tasty and homey. Nothing totally out of my expectations but just a very solid meal. I enjoyed the garlic sauce but might test the waters with the Diablo sauce next time.

Jorge P.

Yelp
I went today with my family to try to have a good dining experience and there was some issues with my dish that I blame the kitchen because the waitress was Awesome!! She was really comprehensive about our demands and she deserves to work in a better place but when I came to pay my bill at the register the place was unattended and it was the owner her self being in charge so I tried to explain her my experience and she played a loony character like she didn't understand or purposely didn't want to assume that why a pico de gallo was mixed with cabbage because my wife ordered a nachos with pico de gallo and the waitress said that this restaurant mixed the salsa with cabbage, so we are not coming back and you don't want to have a bad moment I recommend you to do the same.
google avatar

ARIeL P.

Yelp
It's been awhile since I've been here. Service here is always great. Came with a group of friends for a going away get together since they are always coming here. There was about 30 of us. Service again was great. Good came fast as we ordered. I ordered the fried fish with the garlic butter over the top of the fish. Fish was a decent size and cooked to perfection. The garlic sauce lacked the garlic flavor. So I had to doctor it and squeeze a lot of lime. Over all, turned out better. Four star because I know their other dishes are very good. Like the shrimp and carne asada plate. Portions are always good, it's it's always worth the price. Fresh tortillas always. Be careful of the habanero salsa. It's Spicy and full of flavors. I prefer to mix it with their regular salsa.
google avatar

Zee M.

Yelp
Food is ok, cheap and decent. But a huge fan of some of the menu, it's ok but don't expect everything to be fresh and amazing. It's quantity vs quality here but does the job.

A H.

Yelp
Nice taste food .Big portion I have been coming here long time I like it , all fresh

Kafilat Y.

Yelp
This spot is hella good!! Was kraving a breakfast burrito one morning, stumbled upon this place off international and was shook!! The the staff was super kind and friendly as soon as I walked in, the breakfast burrito was huge and only $10!!! Plus came with chips and salsa. Will be back! They take cash and card here too.

Yelp
A hidden gem. a must try restaurant. looks sketchy, but once you walk in you're literally dancing to your table with the amazing music playing. customer service makes you feel like family. as for the food there are no words I tried three different dishes they were all amazing! I will Definitely be going back.
google avatar

Eric N.

Yelp
Great prices and the food is great. Good size portions as well. I've always done pickup, the inside is older but looks to be fine.
google avatar

Gina G.

Yelp
One of the best low key Mexican joints near the lake. You know it's authentic Mexican when you sit down and they serve you complimentary chips and (spicy) salsa right away. Highly recommend their Mariscos (seafood) here. Their camarones (shrimp) are to die for here!!! I got the camarones a la diabla mixed with their garlic sauce and was blown away. Plates have elephantitis, they are huge! Rice and beans are delicious and the homemade tortillas were such a delightful touch. Micheladas to die for. Don't come here with gentrification vibes, love this place for what it is, delicious authentic Mexican food with impeccable service and conservative digs. I'll be back forever.

Larry B.

Yelp
Been coming here for years. The best authentic Mexican food in the Bay Area. Especially the seafood dishes. Fish tacos are amazing!

Yelp
Ordered delivery from GrubHub. I ordered the al pastor burrito and the tostada with shrimp. Burrito and was still hot when it arrived! I agree with a couple other reviews that the food is a bit bland. Even though the burrito was stuffed with cheese, sour cream, refried beans, etc and MARINATED pork - there was something missing! Wasn't as flavorful as other burritos I've had around Oakland. It was huge though - definitely bang for your buck as I couldn't finish the burrito in one sitting. Tostada with shrimp was ok, again kind of bland and nothing special. I appreciated how they gave a ton of extra salsa, tapatio packets, and utensils/napkins! Had enough sauce for each bite :) I would try this place out again but order different dishes/meats.
google avatar

Jesus L.

Yelp
The food is delicious, great favor and huge portions. We drive out here from pittsburg just to eat here. The service is really fast too. You always leave with a smile and a full stomach.

steve s.

Yelp
I have eaten many times through the years and the owner and his staff have always been kind and have provided superior service and food. This is a "go to" place for my family and I. You will never be disappointed!!!
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
Easily one of the better, if not the best mojarra fritas I've had. The fish isn't overcooked, which I think is usually the issue. It's also a pretty big fish. Larger than usual I'd say. We got ours with this garlic sauce that was surprisingly... I don't want to say bland because that's too negative, so maybe subtle? But you do want the garlic sauce to moisten out the whole affair. We also got these green shrimp enchiladas which were a little odd since the sauces till tasted pretty raw.
google avatar

BriyAna V.

Yelp
I took one of my students here for breakfast, he was really impressed with the food and the kindness of the staff. He wrote this review: I had the steak burrito with sour cream and guacamole. The burrito was A1. Tasty flavors and they give free chips. The guacamole wasn't the best. Service was good, they hooked me up with a free burrito too. I really liked this place.

Yelp
Aways a pleasure visiting Tijuana's Seafood Restaurant. I had a 7 Mares, Mom had a Caldo de Pescado and my little brother Mike had a Huachinango Dorado fish. The flavor it's aways good. The plates are so big that we aways take the rest home. Even though we don't come here often the flavor it's aways very good. After our food we had a regular coffee and a very good flan, which is not very sweet and home made....
google avatar

Marlon T.

Yelp
Tijuana restaurant serves very fresh and good Seafood, although the prices are a little high compared to your normal Mexican restaurant. I went their with an old friend that teaches nearby, and the parents highly recommend this place. We really liked the salsa provided, and my friend ordered a Michelada that looked really good. He crushed that Michelada, and he ordered a shrimp and octopus soup. I ordered the torta de milanesa (breaded carne asada), and a carne asada sope. My friend's soup was very tasty, and broth had a rich flavor, and my food was good also. The high prices on the seafood are worth it.

Niks T.

Yelp
Got the beef crispy taco and a pork burrito. For the taco, it was so bad..worst than Taco Bell..and they used ground beef..so don't even bother getting that one. I ordered the burrito and paid extra for guacamole but they didn't put any in. Burrito was big for the cheap price and it didn't taste bad. Don't think I would eat here again:/ quite disappointed..
google avatar

Allen S.

Yelp
Great food and service and I was able to watch World Cup whilst having a drink. Nice owners! Come and try the steak and eggs breakfast!
google avatar

MG H.

Yelp
My go to are the shredded chicken tacos. They are heavenly, non-greasy, flavorful, you can't go wrong- crispy or soft. Should you get them with soft tortillas, you get avocado slices. The burritos are solid here too.
google avatar

Kimmy G.

Yelp
As with any restaurant, I guess I should being with the food. I am a huge fan of the food here, particularly the sopes. That being said, everything here has a ton of flavor, is super fresh, and they give you big portions. If you aren't looking for this place, you'll drive right past it, and when you walk in you might think, oh a small little restaurant, but around there corner from the front door is lots of seating. They have quite a bit of variety on the menu so if you can't find something you like here then you're not even trying. Come hungry, order something delicious, and then fill up on chips and salsa, rice, and tortillas, and then regret it since your entree is huge, but looks great, so you eat it anyway, go home stuffed, and then take a food coma nap. It will be worth it.
google avatar

Ericka R.

Yelp
Food was Delicious! They could work on the presentation on the micheladas Mango water was fresh. Fried fish and shrimp couldn't have been better! Warm fresh hand made tortillas! A+
google avatar

Nichole L.

Yelp
I ordered through Grubhub, on Mother's Day. The delivery was timely but the food was just 'alright'. The flavors were muted and the salsa/sauces didn't help. We ordered a burrito, a quesadilla, an enchilada dinner and birria tacos ... So we had a lot to choose from. All just okay. Maybe I'll try again ... Maybe.
