Where to Drink Boba in Portland | Eater Portland

"Alberta’s Tiki Tea appears like a run-of-the-mill minimalist boba cafe, but the commitment to high-end ingredients is immediately noticeable in the taste of the cafe’s drinks. Tiki Tea uses an incredibly concentrated tea, making it a great spot for customers who want a more aggressive tea flavor. There is currently no indoor seating and all drinks are made to-go." - Seiji Nanbu

This place is becoming a neighborhood favorite. Love that they offer multiple non-dairy milk options and you can pick your sweetness level.

Google
Matcha craving brought me here today. The drink wasn’t bad ! I would have preferred a stronger matcha flavor though, it was kind of light but still good 👍

Google
Bland and slimy boba. Got the strawberry matcha, and I was not super impressed. The place itself was nice. The person taking my order was a bit condescending. If you don't like your drink with ice, this is not the place for you. They brew their teas hot so ice is a bit of a must.

We’ve gone to Tiki Tea a few times over the years. One of our earliest visits featured a mango smoothie the kids went crazy for, and decent milk tea. Then on three occasions we tried going with a car full of excited kids only to find it closed during posted hours, which was a bummer. Then just this week on an unrelated trip to Alberta we noticed Tiki Tea was open and stopped in. Mango smoothies were out. The taro drink was tasteless paste. The boba in the pina colada smoothie were really chewy and unpleasant. And bathroom was locked. When I asked whether the barista could open it I just got “sorry no I can’t” with no explanation. Next time I’ll try somewhere new.

06/17/18: 5.0 out 5 - Interestingly, our friend had just told me about Tiki Tea yesterday. My wife and I was taking her parents out for brunch and there it was. Obviously, we had to go after our brunch. The place is fresh and new. The staff is friendly and quite informative of the ingredients and proud of the quality. The Boba (aka Bubble, Pearl, or Tapioca Balls) is ideal! Soft and just at the right chewiness. Best of all... real ingredients in the tea drinks! Real Taro in my Taro Milk Tea! An absolute delight! If in the neighborhood, this is a must stop. Try it once and decide for yourself. Enjoy!

Google
Tea and tea used to be my go too, but now I prefer lighter flavors, and Tea and Teas flavors a very sweet. I got a brown sugar matcha milk tea and mango oolong smoothie. The person I gave the matcha milk ttes said it tasted like grass. But I really liked the mango oolong smoothie is wasn’t too sweet but was still very flavorful. Both drinks together was $13

Google
Not too sweet just right, staff asks for level of sweetness before drinks are prepared. Nice cozy dining spot to chill, less busy as it is located outside of Main Street. Street parking available- first come first serve.

Google
They were nice, we got a Mango smoothie with Boba, it had no Mango flavor to it and was weirdly chalky. Won’t be going back, cool vibe though.

Yelp
Cute little tea shop right off of Alberta. I really liked the tea-forward menu (I don't like the ultra sweet boba teas). I decided to try the sea salt cream jasmine tea with boba and thought it was perfect! I'm not sure if the man working was the owner, but he was very friendly to everyone who came in and the drinks came out quickly. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
This was my favorite place. I'm very disappointed in the changes. They still have caffeine free and dairy free options but they are very limited. The current staff were unwilling to make the combinations that the previous staff had no trouble doing. The quality is still very good.

Yelp
I'm happy to see this place is still thriving! This was my go-to place for bubble tea in Portland pre-pandemic. So this recent visit was the first time in a few years, but I'm glad to see that is more or less that same as I remembered it. I like the calm vibes and earthy elements of the store as well as the friendly service. I got the Organic Uji Matcha with Oat Milk and Boba. You can tell by the deep green color of the matcha that the quality is great. The boba has a nice brown sugar sweetness with great chewy texture. Another favorite of mine is the Robust Ceylon Milk Tea. The tea has such a rich nutty flavor with a hint of spice and sweetness. There aren't other tea spots that make this kind of tea, at least not that I've found.

Yelp
Tiki Tea is a small boba shop right off of Alberta. Initially we missed it since the store isn't really visible on the main street, but after backtracking a bit we stopped in to get a drink. Tiki's Classic, Large 24 Oz, 50% Sweet w/ Boba ($6.50) - This drink consists of black tea mixed with half and half (milk substitutes are available) and sugar syrup. When we ordered the drink originally, the cashier told us that in case we needed to adjust the sweetness higher, there a bottle of syrup to the side for us to add as we saw fit. Luckily, the drink was pretty much perfect sweetness for us at 50% (it was a bit less sweet than most other places at 50%) - this added a slight sweetness but allowed the tea taste to come through. This particular tea was definitely higher quality than the low quality tea fannings you usually see boba shops use. It had a bit more of a black tea fragrance and retained some of the astringent notes. I don't think they put too much half and half in, since I couldn't really taste any dairy forward notes. In terms of the boba - as soon as the boba hit my tongue, it immediately reminded me of a hard marble given the smaller size. After I started chewing, I was glad to see my initial impression was incorrect, but it was definitely still harder than my usual preference and there were some pieces that were stuck together. it still had a decent chew that was serviceable for the drink. I especially love how Tiki Tea has a bottle of their syrup near the water dispenser so you can adjust the sugar levels to your liking. While we didn't end up using it, it was certainly appreciated. I've never seen this option before in any of the other 100+ boba shops I've visited.

Yelp
Cute little boba shop in Alberta and easy to find as it was off to the side of the main road. The decor and ambiance of the place was very relaxing with cute little glass vases on the wall. I ordered the masala chai tea at 25% sweetness with boba and that was the perfect sweetness for someone that doesn't want an overpowering sugar flavor and still taste the tea. I would say the tea flavor isn't as strong as other places I've been but it was made well with the boba being a good chew. The drink came out very quickly and the workers were very nice and welcoming.

Yelp
Better fruit tea than milk tea. Location: It is a small establishment. They have limited indoor seating but have very cute decor. There is limited street parking but you are bound to find one if you don't mind a slight walk. Drinks: We ordered an organic Uji Matcha milk tea with oat milk and a fresh squeezed lemon ceylon. I will say that their fruit teas are pretty good but their milk teas are somewhat watered down. Service: The employees are super friendly and nice. Overall, I would come back to this place but only to get their fruit tea.

Yelp
I was surprised that I never ventured to Tiki Tea before when driving on Alberta especially given all the high reviews. Driving up I realized it's slightly tucked in from the main road so be sure to look out for this shop next time you're in the area. The space is really cute with plenty of plants and the ones they are propagating spelling out Tiki Tea on the wall. Their menu is pretty expansive so I ended up trying their classic milk tea and strawberry milk fruit tea (blended). I went with the strawberry fruit tea based on all the reviews and I can see why people constantly get it. It's a light and refreshing smoothie where you get nice bits of strawberry. The classic milk tea was also good but definitely more tea-y if that makes sense. I probably would try another milk tea next time. I also tried their boba and it was cooked well with a nice chew but weren't that sweet from what I could tell from our batch.

Yelp
A boba that doesn't use ANY syrup or powder?!?! I have found my favorite place for boba cravings. I ordered a mango passion fruit tea and it's sweetened with fresh mango chunks and passion fruit puree only - zero additional sugar needed. The staff member was so helpful and friendly and the decor is beautiful and relaxing with a wall of pothos in round glass vases. I wish I lived a little closer but maybe not as I'll end up here every day :).

Yelp
Tried their ube milk tea with almond milk, not enough ube flavor - 3/5. It's a small shop with cute decor (a lot of hanging plants).
google avatar

Yelp
It's such a cute place! The wall had a lot of small plants and it was so pretty! And the drinks are so good. I got brown sugar match and horchata Ceylon. The employees were so nice too!

Yelp
This place opens at 11 and we were waiting outside since 1110 but it only opened around 1130. We were really excited to try this boba place since it was one of the highly recommended boba spots in Oregon but it was not too my liking. Service could have been better. The drinks failed my expectations as I couldn't taste the matcha nor the tea taste. The interior was really pretty though. The other drinks might be better if you want to try it out.
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
If you like strong tea flavor this place definitely has it. For me it was a little too strong, as if the tea was steeped too long and got a little bitter at the end. Air on the side of more sweetness %. Prices slightly higher than others. Preferred ding tea to this one but as others have reviewed the fruit teas may be the way to go. Service was friendly and shop has good aesthetic with hanging plants on the walls.
google avatar

Kim M.

Yelp
Lol... we ordered milk tea and it was not good at all. Seems like a common thing in Portland to have a place be highly rated and the food or drinks aren't that good. I typically like my regular teas pretty strong but this place was overly strong for a milk tea. The bitterness overpowered the flavor. My milk tea had grass jelly in it and the jelly tasted very off like it was sitting in a tin can that was rusting. The place was cute though. I guess I should have tried the fruit teas like everyone is mentioning.

Yelp
Carver and abbey, Thank you so much for the best most quality and professional service. You guys answered all of our questions and were so patient with me. I couldn't make up my mind and I was getting overwhelmed. You were so sweet and nice. I ordered the horchata Ceylon boba milk tea and it was the best I've ever had. Thank you so much!! We can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Yelp
A cute little boba shop. I got their horchata ceylon and my boyfriend got their ube milk tea. The horchata was good, but really strong! The cinnamon hit me hard. I tried my best mixing the drink, but don't think I did a good job. Because after sipping a bit, the horchata taste disappeared and it was now a strong tea. The ube drink was okay. I love how they use ube halaya instead of extract. But overall, I've had better ube drinks elsewhere. This ube drink was essentially milk with ube jam in it. The pearls were disappointing. The texture was good-nice and chewy. But they just didn't taste as good as other boba shops. Their prices are expensive! I know inflation is happening everywhere, but I usually don't pay $7 for a boba. It was also disappointing they didn't have a rewards program like other shops.

Yelp
I ordered the Brown Sugar Matcha Bubble Milk Tea and oh my goodness, it is absolutely delicious! I was walking by this shop and thought I'd step in to satisfy my matcha craving. I had no expectations when entering but I was absolutely blown away. I've never had bubble milk tea before and this was an excellent first try! The baristas were super friendly and the place is very clean! Yes, go, most definitely!
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
This is a cute tea shop and I'm glad we picked this one to visit on our trip to Portland. Read the reviews In advance and this place is definitely different, real tea and real/fresh ingredients without the cloying sweetness of most bubble tea you've had before. I wish there were a few more options but this place was very cute and my milk tea was delish. Although the bathroom was closed off for Covid, they were kind enough to let me use it.

Yelp
horchata tea 50% sweetness sea salt rose jasmine with boba great basic boba joint. horchata is a unique flavor that tastes as expected'!

Yelp
Local gem | Great ingredients $ This is a local gem of a spot in the Alberta district. I love this tea spot because of the location and the ingredients. Ingredients make a big difference! We frequently order the sea salt jasmine cream tea and matcha milk tea with boba. The cup lids are unique. They also sell metal straws. Well priced and friendly staff. They also sell a few other desserts (i.e. pineapple cake, candy, tiramisu) and smoothies.
google avatar

Yang S.

Yelp
Sometimes I crave milk tea with a stronger tea flavor, and I found that today in the sea salt olive tea (oolong)! The tea taste is well balanced with the crema on top. My friend ordered organic uji matcha which is also very tasty!
google avatar

Tristan T.

Yelp
A good bubble tea spot! Smaller menu compared to other chains, which help with decision making. Would definitely come again. I had the Jasmine mt and my friend had their Tiki classic mt. Their mt's are fragrant and balanced, which is strangely hard to come by nowadays. Interior decor is also modern and cute.

Yelp
Found this hidden gem when I was exploring Alberta Art District. Their boba was perfectly chewy and the milk tea was on point. Definitely recommend this place on a hot day and if you're craving something besides coffee.

Yelp
Came to Portland for the day with my family and looked up fresh ingredients/boba on the search engine and came across this boba shop. OH MY goodness the drinks were so refreshing....I got the coconut/taro smoothie w/boba which I have been craving ever since! I The boba was made really well so definite plus. I don't mind texture so if that's not your jam I wouldn't get it, and being in the hot sun that day it was the cherry on top. My hubby got the Horchata Ceylon with boba and let me say it had LAYERS of flavor. We're from Southern CA originally so we've had our fair share of horchata, and my side of the family is Indian and it was on point with that fusion. The flavor of the black tea reminded me of the Ceylon tea I grew up drinking which is like sweet nostalgia. It came through very nicely and bold. My little one got a strawberry smoothie which he really enjoyed. Lots of brain freezes and smiles from him. 10 stars if I could rate higher! Love that they don't use preservatives and use fresh ingredients. Happy we found this place in a sea of boba shops in a big city and we were not disappointed one bit!

Yelp
I was skeptical to try a boba place in Portland but WOW. Exceeded my expectations. I ordered a fruit tea but wanted a smoothie. I asked the cashier which flavor I should get because I was debating between peach or mango. The cashier recommended mango and asked if the cream was okay. I didn't know what that meant and agreed. My drink came out and I filled expected just a syrup fruit flavored tea but I was wrong. It was a mango smoothie tea and the color was yellow. It tasted so good. I also got aloe Vera too and I'm glad I did. This is probably one of the best bobas I've ever had. The cups are so cute too.

Yelp
We are avid boba drinkers, so were looking to try somewhere new and support a local small business. Drinks were ok, not big on flavor. We got the sea salt cream rose black and sea salt oolong. My boyfriend said his tasted like "soapy dish water". Maybe we just ordered the wrong things. Good ambiance but we'll probably stick to our regular boba spot.
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
Had the refreshing Taro Coconut Smoothie. The taro and coconut taste was subtle but it did taste real and not like that of the super purple taro powder. The smoothie was super well-blended and had a good consistency. This quenched my thirst completely! The shop is super cute and green with floting plant vases. The owner and staff were very nice and attentive. Super clean place as well!

Yelp
With all the new tea spots opening up in Portland, Tiki tea is my fav. They have unique flavors of milk teas, cream teas, and fruit teas. You also have the option of adding on toppings such as boba or aloe for a little extra. I tried to sea salt jasmine with cream and it was a delight! Perfect amount of sweetness and creaminess. They use organic loose leaf tea which is a major plus and you can definitely tell in the quality. They also sell Japanese cheesecake and matcha rolls, which I will have to give a try next time I'm in town! Worth the drive to PDX.
google avatar

Casey K.

Yelp
I personally don't like tea in general, but my boyfriend was a fan of the strawberry jasmine fruit tea. I thought the drink was well balanced between the strawberry and jasmine tea, though as someone with a sweet tooth I would've preferred for the strawberry flavor to shine through a little more. He also thought the pearls were good. Again my sweet tooth would have liked a little sweeter but the texture of the pearls was good. BASICALLY, if you're a normal human, you should like this place.

Yelp
Tl;Dr some of the best boba I've had in Portland In general I've struggled to find great Asian food or boba, however I was optimistic to try this place because a couple of my friends recommended it to me. Like many places in Portland the interior of the shop looks amazing. It's very aesthetic and modern and I could see myself relaxing here to do dinner work. However the most important is any boba shop are the drinks. I ordered the strawberry Jasmine with cream and my friend got the classic. Both were really good and had a strong tea flavor which I liked. It's all freshly made and you can watch them put it all together which I appreciated. I was also a fan on the boba itself which was a nice surprise. All in all this was a solid place to hit up!
google avatar

Megan L.

Yelp
Enjoyed some delicious tea here after brunch one afternoon. We tried the brown sugar ube boba and the strawberry horchata. The sweetness level in both drinks was great in that it was not overpowering. The brown sugar ube was a great twist on a traditional drink, with a legit ube flavor in it. The strawberry horchata was also a new flavor, unique but still tasty. Overall look forward to returning again!

Yelp
A small place located off 16th and Alberta. We came here for something thirst quenching for the hot days we've been experiencing in Portland lately. They have an easy to order menu explaining which drinks are hot/cold, with/without cream, and smoothie or not. I love that they don't have a super large selection to choose from, which makes it easy. The drinks come in a cool cup that has a lid that can be used for sipping or to put the boba straw in. I got the sea salt olive tea (oolong) with cream and it was pretty good. You can taste the tea and it is not overpowered with sweetness. The cream/foam on top is a nice touch (its not for everyone). The boba was cooked just right, where it had a good chewiness to it. Overall, had a good experience.

Yelp
05/11/19: 5.0 out 5 - Interestingly, our friend had just told me about Tiki Tea yesterday. Enjoy!

Yelp
This place is pretty legit. They've got high quality teas and a classy vibe. The wall is covered in glass planters on wood. The cups are sturdy with unique lids. Great for an Instagram pic. We had the sea salt cream jasmine tea. It was the perfect amount of sweetness and creaminess. Next time I want to try the strawberry. I would definitely return.

Yelp
Environment: Small little area but it was nice. Bright and lots of green on the wall that spells out TIKI. When we walked in it was super warm (but then outside was a little chilly). They're also all about being environmentally friendly. Staff: Waited patiently as we looked at the menu. Drink: I got the 12oz TIKI original, 50% sweet and no boba. I liked the strong tea flavor. The cup was nice and everything was recyclable. I also tried my friend's strawberry jasmine. It had real strawberries inside and it was very refreshing. However, couldn't really taste the jasmine tea. Anyways, I liked it but it is far from where I live. I will try it again when I head over to Alberta...or hopefully they'll have another one closer to my area:)

Yelp
Service amazing! Super hospitable staff and the decor is on point! I love all the plants and the rest of the modern decor. Although small spot definitely intimate to come with small group!

Yelp
Hands down THE BEST boba shop in Portland. Head here if you're looking for light and flavorful tea drinks with unique flavors, as well as delicious Asian desserts! Here's the list of reasons why Tiki Tea is so good: 1) The tea flavor is strong and fragrant. The taste is most obvious in the Classic Milk Tea - I recommend this drink if you're looking for a traditional milk tea with hints of Earl Grey. 2) All natural ingredients such as fresh fruit, milk, and house-made cream (no powders). Unlike other places I've been to, the cream foam at Tiki Tea is light and not heavy tasting at all (I suspect it's probably also lower calorie). 3) The fruit tea smoothies here really stand out and are different from a typical boba shop drink. They're light, super refreshing, and come with cream foam on top. Both tea and fruit flavors can be clearly tasted. I always get the Strawberry Jasmine and cannot recommend it enough! 4) Desserts here are legit and perfect to enjoy with your tea. They have a rotating menu of cakes from Heikelok bakery such as Japanese cheesecake and butterfly pea cake roll. The butter cookies are also delicious. 5) The owner is super sweet and welcoming! Tiki Tea is a must try, especially if you appreciate boba that is on the lighter, healthier, and less sugary side.

Isabel M.

Yelp
I have been going here for about a year now and it's great! Definitely my go to boba shop on Alberta. The boba is always warm and fresh and perfect. The drinks are perfect and flavorful but I would lean more to fruit drinks!

Yelp
We were walking around alberta, waiting for a table to open up at a different place and saw a small sign for bubble tea. I'm all for a pre-brunch boba. The interior here is gorgeous! I really love all the glass spheres with plants scattered across the walls. I don't think I've had quite a refreshing tea before. We shared a coconut taro with boba. The flavor of the tea was really light and wonderful. Most othe tea places ive tried have sort of a candied sweet flavor to them and I usually have to ask for half sugar. Not the case here. They have some other great looking flavors which I'll be sure to try next time.
google avatar

Brittney K.

Yelp
My go to bubble tea spot! Tiki Tea is hard to beat. Teas are actual tea, not sugary powder and additives. While the classics in the menu are amazing, there are always new seasonal flavors to try out as well. The boba is the best I've had- just the right amount of sweetness without being too much. Some of my favorite flavors: brown sugar matcha bubble tea, sea salt rose black, and the classic. I'm case you're more of a hot tea person, there are options for that as well!
google avatar

Mio T.

Yelp
Took a day trip to Portland and decided to stop by Tiki Tea while I was in the area. I typically order jasmine milk tea from boba shops, but decided to try their strawberry jasmine tea and it was a perfectly sweet balance between fruity and tea! Bonus points for an aesthetic interior with cute decor!

Yelp
We came in on a Sunday after breakfast. The space is calm & inviting. We ordered the sea salt olive oolong with agar jelly, the strawberry jasmine with boba, the fresh squeezed lemon ceylon, and we had try one of the toast cubes. The handmade black tea ice cream was my favorite thing!! All were delicious & beautiful works of art! The cups, lids, and straws were really nice quality. The lemon ceylon is refreshing, like a fancy arnold palmer. The strawberry jasmine was creamy and the boba tasted very fresh. If you like classic tea, the sea salt olive oolong is a great way to mix it up but still get that nice tea flavor. The agar jelly was delightful! We didn't mess with any of the sweetness levels, 100% was great. I also recommend the matcha Japanese cheesecake. We had a sample and it was a light & fluffy hug that goes well with tea. I'm excited to try the rest of the menu!

Yelp
Very easy to find, couple steps off Alberta's street. The place itself was very well put together and cute for pictures. The tea itself was okay, in comparison to other bobba places, this was a 5/10. I felt like the customer service could be kinder too...
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Interesting flavors and cute decor! I parTIKI-larly liked the creamy and fruiTEA Strawberry Jasmine Tea. The Rooibos Tea had a strong flavor. I thought the reusable cups were clever and service was nice!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a very good boba tea in Portland. Prices are high, but the quality is good. I've tried several of the milk teas, and have enjoyed them. Give it a shot!
google avatar

Jennie S.

Yelp
Quality bubble tea with quick service. Came in during dinner time, little to no wait time. I ordered their sea salt cream jasmine tea and it was ready within minutes. I'm usually not a big fan of cream teas but decided to give this a try and was pleasantly surprised. The fresh yet aromatic jasmine flavor balanced well with their rich but not too heavy sea salt cream. The tea overall was not too sweet, which is what I like. Really nice and clean interior. Liked the simple design with the white wall and floating succulents/plants. Looking forward to coming back and trying something new.
google avatar

Yelp
Finally! Good boba in the neighborhood. This style is different than what I am used to . So good and high quality. Great flavor options (blood orange, sea salt rose) with no sticky sweetness. So good!
google avatar

Patty B.

Yelp
This was my absolute favorite boba shop in all of Portland. We loved it so much I came back twice in one day! Their Organic Uji Matcha ($5.25) for the 24oz + Grass Jelly ($0.50) topping is to die for. The best part of this establishment is that they allow you to bring in your own container to save on the plastic waste! The interior is very trendy and they are centrally located around all the cutest shops!

Yelp
Delightful Jasmine hot tea on a beautiful evening to stroll Alberta! The staff is friendly and helpful and COVID conscious. It's a small shop just off of the main strip of Alberta so make sure you find them! Support local!
google avatar

Yelp
Love this local tea and their spin on tea drinks! They have hot and iced available. Try their seasonal options...so good! Also, their homemade nougats are fabulous! The strawberry and matcha were my favorites!!

Yelp
This was a random find for a boba craving. I am a picky boba addict and didn't expect too much. The staff is super friendly, Ceylon lemon with boba fruit tea was delicious , boba nice chewy texture.
