Houston Bars With Rum Cocktails for National Rum Month | Eater

"Tiki drinks, tacos, seafood boils, and truffle fries mingle at this laid-back tiki-meets-tequila bar in the Heights. We can’t think of a better way to beat the summer heat than sipping frozen drinks in one of Tikila’s cabanas surrounded by palm trees as a guest DJ spins hits deep into the evening. The bar’s Frozen Ocean Water, a boozy take on the drive-in favorite, is made with a blend of Santa Teresa 1796 rum, blue curacao, coconut, lime, and pineapple juice, making it the perfect sipper for a steamy summer night on one of Tikila’s three patios."

New Heights Patio Bar Starts Slinging Tequila-Spiked Tiki Cocktails Next Month - Eater Houston

"Heights denizens will soon have a spot to sip island-inspired cocktails in Tikila’s, a brand new tiki bar that’s set to make its debut next month. A post to Tikila’s Instagram account indicates that the bar at 2708 North Shepherd Drive will open its doors in early August, which is only slightly behind the original opening timeline of spring 2019. Ahead of its debut, the bar is currently seeking managers, bartenders, and servers. The minds behind Tikila’s have been very mum about what exactly drinkers can expect at this forthcoming watering hole, but expect classic tiki cocktails, many of which will be spiked with tequila instead of the tiki-traditional rum. The bar will also have a patio, on which those tiki cocktails can be enjoyed. Tikila’s is set to debut on August 3. Eater has reached out to Tikila’s for more details on its menu, stay tuned for an update." - Amy McCarthy

The atmosphere is quite nice, but the cocktails are a bit underwhelming. They rarely use fresh juices or ingredients for their drinks. For example, when you order a coconut-flavored cocktail, you’ll get a drink made with coconut-flavored liquor rather than one that actually incorporates coconut milk or coconut cream. It’s basically just a step up from what you’d get at a nightclub.

First time stopping by and will definitely not be the last! Came for the crawfish and stayed for the drinks and vibes. It's hard to find places that accommodate NA cocktails, but these guys completely make it happen. The staff is definitely friendly and knowledgeable. i think i found my new hang out.

Be sure to get a happy hour margarita! Tuesday nights is Lotteria – for free. Great atmosphere - big screen TVs playing the games for the guys. Plenty of pop-ups for food. You can also bring in your own food or have it delivered. I love it here. Everyone was so awesome. If you go outside in the winter, they have plenty of heat lamps – it doesn’t even feel one bit cold.

Google
Had a great time with my friend and absolutely loved the aesthetic of the bar. Wound up coming a little after they opened at 3 and stayed for a few hours. I got the frozen mojito and got a suggestion from one of the gentlemen working there to try the spicy margarita and it was pretty good. Prices were great for happy hour and they have a plethora of outdoor seating so it’s definitely going to be a vibe once the weather breaks.

Google
I come for the drinks! The music is mid unless it's after 9 pm. At that time, expect an array of music genres to be played. You will be buzzed because the drinks are typically nice and stiff. The seafood food truck and taco food truck are good bites to ward off the liquor effects.

Google
This was a great place close to my home to enjoy with your bae or friends! You can either sit inside and play games or sit outside and enjoy the views. The food is so good! The drinks are delicious! Friendly workers and it’s quiet and peaceful even with the music on lol. I plan to return soon!

Google
Sunday Tips. Come around 2:30-3pm if you want your choice of seating and no lines for drinks/crawfish. If you come after 4pm be prepared to wait in line for food trucks and crawfish. Made the mistake at coming around 12:30 and it was completely empty, and the crawfish and food trucks weren’t open until 2/3pm. The atmosphere was relaxing, the music was good, the staff was very friendly and the drinks were creative, cold and delicious! The restrooms were clean, the staff was COVID safe wearing masks. I’d definitely come back again for this Sunday experience. So fun!

Google
A must visit spot! Was told about this place from the bartender at my Hotel, he stated I wouldn’t be let down an he was not wrong. It was a Fat Tuesday celebration an was amazing. Lots of outdoor seating to enjoy the weather and music. There was various food/gift vendors on site. I had the crawfish which were impeccable along with some street tacos. Fun environment, highly recommend

Yelp
I found this place on accident. I was planning to go to the seafood boil place next door but after seeing the tiki huts with swings and all the people having a good time inside tikilas I had to stop by. It was a Sunday night and the astros were playing so there were groups watching the game and the bar had drink specials. I got the ocean water frozen which was on special for the game for $6 or $7. It was so tasty but very sugary. Also got a shot of patron for $11. We sat at the bar and the Dj played a wide range of music we enjoyed and danced to. The bartenders were very friendly and attentive. They have water stations for humans and dogs so you don't have to wait for a bartender for that. Indoor and outdoor seating and can enjoy the food from the seafood place (hot and buttered) or the taco truck outside. I'll be back! PS: they have a small parking lot (free) that was almost full when I arrived.

Yelp
The ambiance is nice and has good out door seating. The frozen cocktails are really good. I don't think that they have food but only have food trucks. The service is pretty good except when it gets really busy which is during the weekends I hate the parking there's not a lot of parking spaces. over all not bad but not my favorite place to hang out

Nathan B.

Yelp
Hoping this reaches the owner. Your bar manager tonight looked at my buddies ID who recently turned 21 in July. And decided it was fake. We told her it was real which it was. However she would not look again and was very stuck up about her decision. I understand that if she misidentifies an ID and serves a minor that could lead to a whole bunch of problems for her. I do get that. But this was not situation. He was 21. Please have her do a course or something to where she won't lose y'all business again. We were going to order margaritas and shots etc... however we left and will not be returning. Along with notifying our friends and family that this establishment sucks. I do wish her the best in life but I do pray on her down fall tonight nov. 9th 2024. I hope she is miserable. I believe her name was Celeste.

Yelp
Great staff, incredible decor, bomb crawfish and drinks... but the bees are a little bothersome.

Yelp
This place has the greatest theme. Made me feel like I was in a far-off oasis even though it was cold! They lit the torches and fire pits, which made things more comfortable. Idk what happened that day it seemed as if the bar tender may have been overwhelmed that day. She did make some bangin tiki torches tho! There was no food but they have pop ups that sell different foods throughout the week... maybe an excuse to come back and try other things there while playing Jenga or cornhole! Just a quick tip they added gratuity to the tab automatically

Andrea M.

Yelp
I just went here for the first time , and I guess it was alright but the bartender was pissed off for us ordering stuff I understand you are around ppl that are drunk but it's your job to serve drinks . One thing that really pissed me off was how they have a cat super small the poor baby was trying to sleep had no water or food in the bowl and having loud music there was no way that baby was in a good environment to be sleeping there or being there with a bunch of drunk ppl .
google avatar

Dennis B.

Yelp
I tried this place out after another place I went to. So I got there late. So next time ill have definitely have a better n deeper dive of the place. But as what I experienced here it was pretty cool spot sat outside in the patio vibe n had good convo. Drinks were drinks, that'll it do its job. lol Dj that night had some great tunes. Overall I'm definitely going back. Do more homework on this place. Peace
google avatar

Lily N.

Yelp
This place was super fun! I felt like I was off on an island sipping on a drink. The environment and how spacious the area is for large groups of friends. The DJ was playing good songs. One thing is the drinks were inconsistent!
google avatar

Naomi H.

Yelp
It's a fun bar scene with the "Hawaii" theme. I game on a Sunday it was chill they have good music, I thought the food was available in the bar but it' seems like Evry day they have different food truck so depending on what day is the food available.

Yelp
I've been here plenty times over the years & can say it's truly ok. Cute, tropical decor. Indoor and outdoor seating. I really like the swings at the tables & large sitting area outback with the bed/lounge chairs. The DJ's are usually pretty good. Playing a nice mix, but some times the music is too loud. To where you can't hear anyone at all. And this coming from a chic who blasts music, so it takes a lot for something to be too loud. Nice selection of beer on tap & bottled. Mixed drinks are good too. Prices are about the same for what you get in the area. They've got a good rotation of food trucks that service the joint & most have been tasty. Anything from crawfish, tacos, to bbq has been on deck. And some I think are a bit overpriced, but hey comes with the location/territory. So you see this & like hey what's up with the 3 stars? Wellll IMO Tikila's is like a 3.5, but not truly 4. The reason I say this is because the service. Its just been very sporadic. I've gone plenty times solo, +1 or even a larger group & service has been all over the place. With a larger group where I would've expected poorer service our waitress was awesome. She checked up on us, fixed an issue with my friend's drink w/o attitude & bartenders were hilarious. On another day I was solo & basically got ignored. My most recent visit there were only 3 of us. We planned to stay a bit & others were coming to join us. Sat inside due to a large party outback. Our waitress was pretty rude. Took our initial order & after that she walked past us like we weren't even there. IDK if because we weren't slamming the drinks back & running up a $200 tab in the 1st 30 minutes or what, but she wasn't pleasant at all. We ended up ordering 1 more round at the bar ourselves & then left. I still enjoy this place but would visit more if the service was better. I still recommend it for a spot to just chill & enjoy a good drink. Just pack your patience. Yelp on my friends!

Yelp
Meh. More tiki decor than tiki menu or tiki execution. This is a straight bar. No food. Bartender is great. Wallpaper is on point- I guess if you want a social experience this is the bar for you. If you want tiki... probably not
google avatar

Tamika B.

Yelp
Went on a Tuesday for $5 Marg's and tequila shots so my friend and I were pretty wasted for $50 with tip. Please note gratuity was already added to the bill which could have easily been missed but I'd read the reviews beforehand and was expecting it. The decor is gorgeous it feels very vacation-y. I think they only played latin music but after a few drinks it was hittin', lol. The best part though were the food vendors I had street and birria tacos from 2 vendors both were delicious!
google avatar

Alexus N.

Yelp
I see some 1 star reviews here and while that sucks, I can at least say my experience here was 5 stars! I believe Blake was our bartender. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to take too many pics, but I definitely enjoyed the vibe and drinks (on a late Sunday afternoon). Upon walking in, there are a few food trucks outside and the outdoor area was charming! There's tiki hut style seating and swings. You can order from the lil window outside. It was too warm so we went inside. I didn't think it was a sit-down establishment... So my friend and I just went straight to the bar and ordered drinks. Found ourselves a booth and sat. There were promo gals passing out refreshing infused vodka and everyone was friendly. If I needed another drink, I just went to the bar, no big deal. It's a bar/lounge, not full service restaurant. I see that there's a strict dress code policy and no Crocs allowed (per previous reviews). Not sure about the reasoning behind that, but I came very casual and had Vans on. A good chill place for cocktails especially once the weather gets cooler outside.

Yelp
Love lotería Tuesdays and it's because vickiwithanaccent rocks hosting it! & the Dj of course !
google avatar

Iman N.

Yelp
The location of this restaurant is great. The vendors are also really great but they have a huge bee problem that has always happened every time I go here my friend even got stung by a bee, so that's the reason why I would give such a review.
google avatar

Yayo M.

Yelp
I only go when Hot & Buttered is Hosting Crawfish and it is always deliciously Devine; perfect amount of seasoning and spices. I usually sit outside on their cute patio; i have only went in the summer so i ask them to put on the Water fans and it makes my experience so much cooler and smooth. The service is great and the waiters are so sweet and inviting. And baby when i tell you those drinks are awesomely taste and will give a good buzz. I can never go wrong coming to this Little gem.

Justin D.

Yelp
One star rating for adding auto gratuity. Tipping should be optional and never automatic.
google avatar

Brenda G.

Yelp
Went there for the crawfish and it was delicious, kinda empty but the vibes were there, I chose to give this place a 2 star ONLY BECAUSE OF THE FEMALE BARTENDER that was there, her attitude makes you not even want to come back. No smile when we put our first order in so cold so unwelcoming and halfway through the visit, the games on the tables said take a selfie with a bartender, if she did not want to do it after 2 request that it will be quick! Left me standing in embarrassment so yea...never again. Drinks were delicious and the crawfish employees were so nice and helpful.
google avatar

Cynthia V.

Yelp
I had been wanting to check this place out since it opened and finally found an excuse to get a group together here. We got there around 4:45 on a Friday (happy hour starting early) and were the only ones there - odd. Bartender was able to suggest a few drinks from the menu. More people started to show up around 5:30pm, but unfortunately it had rained recently so their nice patio was too wet to enjoy. Overall, the vibe here is interesting - tiki-inspired decor, but only a few tiki drinks on menu. Otherwise, normal bar things. They also do bottle service, apparently, striving for that Vegas poolside feel; a little out of place on 610 in the Heights. This is a good spot for groups, especially if the weather is behaving and you can enjoy the patio. Food trucks on site. Parking is street (good luck) or valet.

Yelp
From service to cocktails to atmosphere this place is one of my favorite spots in all of Houston!
google avatar

Roma B.

Yelp
Such a cute spot, great happy hour deals! Got their special espresso martini frozen and it was delicious! Could definitely taste the espresso, but it wasn't overpowering. Loved the environment, they had live music going too. Place was pretty empty at 5pm, but got packed around 6pm. They don't have any food options, but there is a taco stand and another food truck out front. Can't wait to come back and sit outside on their swings! Parking is easy too, as they have a parking lot.
google avatar

Marie B.

Yelp
Super cool indoor/outdoor venue with great drinks & food! From smooth cocktails to frozen boozy treats, there's a good variety to sip & enjoy while you lounge in a cozy booth, stretch out on a bench, or kick your legs on the swing set. We came for the boil - crawfish , shrimp & crab are cooked well, flavored with a rich herb & butter sauce. Other casual menu options are available too, like tacos, hot dogs, egg rolls, and fries. The island vibes make you forget you're in the heart of Houston! Awesome, laid back spot to hang out.
google avatar

Steve N.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. They have some amazing bartenders. Jett is the best! They have different food trucks/vendors every night. I like the birria tacos on Monday and steak night on Thursdays. They have different drink specials every day. The frozen mojito, frozen cucumber margarita, and the up in smoke are must tries. The atmosphere is relaxed and super chill. They have tables with swings or a large back patio area. They are also dog friendly. I would definitely recommend this place. It's one of my absolute favorite places in Houston with the best drinks!
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
Been here a few times and the vibe is awesome. Drinks are always good and the staff is super helpful. Love the outdoor sitting for those cool nights
google avatar

Yelp
Stumbled upon this stop in our search for crawfish. Found a GEM!!! Omg this place is epic! Food trucks, great chill vibe music. Chill vibes all around. Centralized bar area. Outdoor seating with swings. Outdoor covered seating area with astroturf, picnic tables, and lunge beds. Had the very best time!! The crawfish and shrimp are the die for, seasoning to perfection! The taco truck had the best loaded fries and elote. The Asian food truck looked great too. Can't wait to come bakc Oh and dog friendly!! And kid friendly earlier in the day

Victoria D.

Yelp
My go to spot! Food trucks are always good and so are the drinks! Staff is amazing and always friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly one of the better bars in the heights. I went on a Wednesday night and it was pretty empty and had a nice quiet vibe. Cocktails are excellent- happy hour is AMAZING with half priced all cocktails. Highly recommend the Thriller. Food truck at the time was excellent. In short - definitely a great place for a weekday drink. It's more isolated than the other heights hangout bars and hence can be better for actual conversation.
google avatar

Nadia A.

Yelp
I loved it here! Great music. At some point there was a Megan the Stallion & cumbia mix. Great DJ, at least on bingo night. My coworkers and I had a great time here. Love how they promote small local business. The tacos outside were great.

Sam A.

Yelp
Hello, I would not recommend this place. The long hair bouncer told us that we need to "get out" because we questioned them on our tab. The bald bouncer was only the nice one there. These guys Felicia and Karen.s try to take advantage of our group by asking for more tip. Felicia and karen.s didn't tell our group that 20% was already included. We don't mind paying the 20% however to take advantage and tell me not to tell others that it's not already included is not acceptable. On top of that they told our group to leave after we complained and spent over $1,000+. BE AWARE WHEN GOING HERE AND WATCH OUT FOR THE TIP SCAM. ALSO KRISTIN THE BAR MANAGER WAS NOT HELPFUL AT ALL.
google avatar

Kim H.

Yelp
We were a group of three people who showed up on a Thursday night (barely anyone there and no live music or anything) however was charged a 20% large group gratuity and an additional 20% event gratuity. How are we a large group and where is the event that took place? Makes no sense to pay 40% total in gratuity when it wasn't even full service in the place. Our other friend who was part of our group was only charged one 20% large group gratuity. At least be consistent with how you charge the gratuity.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Decided to check this place out for a happy hour on a Friday night. They have a lot more parking than I expected which was great. The drinks were rather pricey for what you got. Yes I understand it's the heights. But still they weren't worth it. Best part about it was the food vendors which weren't even part of the actual place. The service was okay. It was weird that the waitress instead of running your card and returning for a card took it then gave it to someone else to store. I didn't like this exchange at all.
google avatar

. ..

Yelp
I love tikilas don't get me wrong but they need to have security at all times and put more cameras in blind spots because my car was broken into and items were stolen. They have yet to do anything about it. SIDE BAR, THEY SAID THEFT HAS BEEN HAPPENING EVERY DAY SO FOR THEM NOT TO enforce SECURITY IS INSANE!!! GET IT TOGETHER!!!!!
google avatar

Dominique C.

Yelp
The drinks were amazing and the Korean fried wings were OUTSTANDING!!!!! Worth every penny! The crunch was just astonishing! My grandmother can't even do better than that! We went during happy hour and I absolutely enjoyed myself. They have a live band as well.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
The service, ambiance and everything was great. We went for steak night and the vendor showed up like 3 hours late. Disappointed
google avatar

Jon S.

Yelp
I've been a couple of times and every time I go in she is very rude. I love the place but jayia makes me feel very unwelcome and it makes me not want to come back. Everything else is great, what a shame.
google avatar

Vivian N.

Yelp
Not sure if the patio gets served but we were not waited on at all sitting outside. Got one drink and it was very watered down. Also don't bother with Hot and Buttered Crawfish. The customer service there was even worse for overpriced crawfish that was overly salted. Their "garlic" flavor didn't even have garlic in it.... Will try the food truck if we ever come back to this bar.
google avatar

Marco V.

Yelp
It was our first time at Tikilia's and it was a great experience. Julio the bartender was super fried and engaging. Will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
This was not worth the 2hr wait!! IDK what the hype was all about unless you have never had good crawfish because all this was, was a nasty garlic sauce added to whatever you ordered BECAUSE, I ordered crawfish, snow crab, shrimp and scallops and it was all broiled and topped with their nasty garlic red sauce.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
This place wasn't worth it. Empty on a Saturday. A lot of staring walking in created an odd vibe. Bartenders ignored me and then were rude after waving them down while they were just standing around. And, the music was way too loud. Wouldn't recommend it.
google avatar

Vincent L.

Yelp
Tuesday's have tequila 5 dollar drinks specials and lotteria (Mexican bingo) wonderful crowd and atmosphere. Not too crowded, great layout and spacing for social distancing if needed
google avatar

Annel H.

Yelp
Went here to celebrate my birthday, the bartender was drunk and unfortunately charged me twice. Had to get my bank involved.... Not going again.

Endy V.

Yelp
Dude first time here, and the service was amazing. It's rare at a bar to get the love, Jayaia girl thank you so much. Best bar tender ever! Drinks amazing, but that's not what impressed me, Jayaia was so patient and amazing customer service. If you guys ever come in the day time is beautiful, such a peaceful amazing entertainment, thank you! Guys come out and see my girl Jayaia !!! Please ! Best service and best drinks. Thank you for your hospitality
google avatar

Jasmine U.

Yelp
I visited here 7/24/21 and I really enjoyed it. The vibe is here is nice, lots of outdoor seating and various food truck options. Drinks reasonably priced, good service and the bathroom was clean. The star here was the CRAWFISH mannn some of the best crawfish I've ever had. If it's in season please make a stop here just for that. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Anna K.

Yelp
Probably not a place that I'd describe as my scene, but I enjoyed it. The happy hour was excellent! $5 margaritas and delicious frozen mojitos that had a nice kick. They were small but strong! There were a few other options on the menu, but those were the ones we tried. Excellent value for a happy hour that goes til 7 pm. The service was great! Very friendly and pretty attentive. I also liked that it's big with lots of different places to sit. It really started filling up toward 7. One build would be adding food. There was a food truck outside but seemed really limited. We may have stayed longer if there were more and better options for snacks. Loved the valet attendant. So very nice and friendly. Probably won't become a regular here but I'll be back for happy hour!
google avatar

Cidney S.

Yelp
The crawfish at their food truck was AMAZING!!! I am extremely picky when it comes to crawfish and they're probably one of the best I've ever had. The atmosphere was also very fun and relaxing. I would recommend to anyone looking for a fun/ casual date night.
google avatar

Jenny S.

Yelp
I came here with some friends once weeks if not months before their grand opening on a Thursday evening. They have some parking outside around the bar but I don't believe there is a big parking lot. The decor and design was really cute and I could see myself going back to this bar to meet up with friends or maybe even a date. It got pretty busy and the service was meh. It seemed like the bartenders were more likely to service some friends or regulars than the rest of us patrons. The outdoor patio was also a nice hang out. I would come back here and enjoy a drink in the front and hang out on the swings. If you are in the heights and looking for a spot to drink I recommend you check them out. I'd advise to not go during peak hours/days though.
google avatar

Natalie G.

Yelp
Nice relaxing bar in the Heights area. Came on a Friday during their Happy Hour (4pm-6pm). I had their $5 frozen margarita and margarita on the rocks. The frozen margarita had more of an alcohol kick to it than the one on the rocks. The place overall had a good variety of sit down options. There was bar stool seating at the bar, booths and high chairs inside, and three outdoor patio options. There was a front patio that had turf and picnic tables to sit at, the side patio had swings (which was the highlight I think), and they had a back enclosed patio with turf and booth, chairs, or lounge laid back seating as options. I didn't try any of their other cocktails they had since I only went for happy hour, but I definitely will be back to try out their menu. They did have craft beers as well as domestic and import. The bartender that I encounter was nice and attentive.

Yelp
This place looks like it was pulled right off the beaches of Florida and dumped right into the heights. I loved loved loved the theme of this bar!! We went on a Friday evening around 6pm for their happy hour and were able to find a lot of parking around the back of the building (there was valet in the front). It was not very packed, but had a TON of seating, inside and outside and played great music. The bartenders were all super nice and made sure we were taken care of. We ordered the frozen mojitos and frozen margaritas and both were very strong and very good for only $5! I do wish they had more of a variety of drinks on their happy hour menu, but looked past it but how much i enjoyed the margarita. I would definitely like to come back to this place maybe later during the night to be able to see how packed and fun it really gets!

Yelp
Came here for Hot and Buttered and a couple drinks on a Saturday. We arrived at 3 and it wasn't too packed as were able to find a nice spot. Enjoyed sitting outside on a sunny day and had some great crawfish. They have a cool patio with lots of shade and swings. The drinks are good but didn't feel like they were super strong and pricey for what they were. Still good though. The spicy margarita went perfect with crawfish.
