Hawaiian comfort fare like pork belly bowls & garlic noodles
"Lines have snaked out the door of this daytime noodle shop ever since Top Chef alum Sheldon Simeon and his wife, Janice, opened it in spring 2016. They serve customizable bowls with a base of white rice, brown rice, or garlic noodles (the clear winner), crowned with fried chicken thighs, garlic shrimp, poke, or pork belly. The spicy fried chicken sandwich may be the island’s tastiest bargain. Check the board by the register (or Tin Roof’s Instagram) for daily specials, which frequently reflect Simeon’s Filipino heritage, like sarciado, a fish dish that includes egg and tomato. The restaurant is takeout only; take your goodies over to the picnic benches at nearby Kanaha Beach. Must-try dish: Get the “dime bag” house-made furikake mix to sprinkle on everything. It’s the best fifty cents you’ll spend on Maui." - Shannon Wianecki

"You might not expect to find one of Maui’s best lunch counters in a strip mall next to an auto parts store, but that’s exactly how Hawai‘i works. Tin Roof’s Kau Kau Tins are a nod to Hawai‘i’s plate lunches and come with options like pork belly, garlic shrimp, and mochiko chicken on top of rice, kale, or garlic noodles. Tin Roof is the perfect place to experience the mashup of cuisines—or what locals call “local food”—influenced by the immigrants, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, who came in the 19th and 20th centuries to work the sugarcane and pineapple plantations. (“Hawaiian food” refers to Native Hawaiian cuisine or one that’s directly inspired by it.) Order online to bypass the line." - martha cheng

"On my last day, I made my way to Kahului, Maui's main town. As is the routine for those in the know, I went to pick up my in-flight lunch at Tin Roof, an unpretentious takeout joint by Top Chef alum Sheldon Simeon and his wife, Janice." - Chaney Kwak
"One of chef Sheldon Simeon’s Maui restaurants where he applies imaginative, contemporary treatments to taro, offering creative spins that reinterpret traditional island uses of the root within casual restaurant dishes." - Claudia Geib
