Where to Eat the Best Tacos in Nashville | Eater Nashville

"Brian Riggenbach and Mikey Corona of downtown’s the Mockingbird have ventured into the Buchanan Arts District with a cheery little bungalow featuring an assortment of tacos including marinated chicken thighs, Norteno-style skirt steak, and, for a vegan experience, shredded jackfruit (homemade flour and corn tortillas are both available as options). If you’re packing an appetite, opt for Mikey’s Super Taco, a plate-sized flour taco brimming with eggs, beans, potatoes, and cheese, paired with one of the agua frescas or margaritas on the menu." - Ellen Fort

The 12 Best New Restaurants In Nashville 2024

"Let us present you with Nashville’s current lunch holy trinity: a massive tijuana hot dog covered in chipotle crema, carnitas melt on texas toast, and agua frescas with free refills. This should be your go-to spread at Tio Fun, a Tex-Mex spot in North Nashville that's ideal for a casual, delicious, and extravagant lunch that won’t cost you more than $30. Definitely come with another person (or five) and split all of that, plus whatever else looks good on the menu—we’ll be back for you, mexican pizza and torta de chilaquiles. The dining room is super colorful, the staff is mighty friendly, and there’s even a small parking lot out back. " - ann walczak, carlo mantuano, jackie gutierrez jones 2

Tio Fun Review - North Nashville - Nashville - The Infatuation

"If we had to describe Tio Fun in one word, it’d be joyful. The restaurant is a temple for anybody who identifies spiritually as a fun uncle, with a menu of dishes perfect for spoiling our respective nieces and nephews everywhere. Walk into its sunny, mural-covered space, pay your respects at the altar to Selena, and dive into classic Mexican snacks that are good for a ton of different occasions. photo credit: Casey Irwin photo credit: Casey Irwin photo credit: Casey Irwin Need a quick budget-friendly lunch? Order a couple of sizable barbacoa and al pastor tacos. Want to stay a while and socialize? The airy restaurant has several big tables for groups, plus a cute cactus-lined patio that’s a great setting for sipping margaritas. And to top it all off, the service is super friendly, with staffers keen to keep your aguas frescas full and the good vibes going. Food Rundown photo credit: Casey Irwin Carnitas Patty Melt This is the thing to order here. The cheese and carnitas melt in your mouth in equal measure, and the chipotle cream drizzled across the top delivers a nice zing to keep the whole thing from feeling too heavy. It's an unexpected (and very welcome) upgrade to the regular ole patty melt. photo credit: Casey Irwin Aguas Frescas & Funcle Frozen Margarita The drinks match the playful energy of the food menu. Tasty aguas frescas (we’re partial to the blackberry) are perfect for washing down tacos, and if it’s a buzz you seek, look no further than the “Funcle” frozen margaritas. They’re blended, on tap, and have a bunch of rotating flavors: strawberry and coconut are winners. photo credit: Casey Irwin Tijuana Dog We love a good hot dog, especially one that’s a foot long and covered in fajita vegetables, chipotle mayo, pico, and jalapeños. Tio’s Tijuana dog is both indulgent and ridiculous. Order it. Churro Served piping hot out of the fryer in a classic paper wrap, Tio Fun’s churro doesn’t try to do too much. It’s crispy, coated in just the right amount of cinnamon sugar, and stuffed with caramel cream. It’s everything you’ve ever loved about a churro—just a bit better." - Bailey Freeman

"Brian Riggenbach and Mikey Corona of downtown’s the Mockingbird have ventured into the Buchanan Arts District with a cheery little bungalow featuring potted plants, a patio with rainbow-colored umbrellas, and a shrine to famous fictional uncles —“tio” means “uncle” in Spanish — throughout pop culture. On the fast-casual joint’s menu: Mikey’s Super Taco, a plate-sized flour taco brimming with eggs, beans, potatoes, and cheese. Google
We have been wanting to try Tio Fun for quite awhile especially after meeting los Tios earlier this year. The taco meats were all extraordinary but we loved the al pastor the most. The beans and rice were well made (without any odd canned vegetables like many Mexican places do for some reason nowadays!!) and the tostada was great. But the Dogo Mexico was the star of the show for us. I'm a big fan of tubemeat and the big Mexican weiner does not disappoint!! We plan to return often to try the whole menu!

Amazing food amazing people. Great happy hours. My new favorite more to the authentic side Mexican restaurant in town. You can tell the owner pours his heart and soul into this business and he really cares about his customers. I wish we had more business like this in our neighborhood. Will definitely become my regular spot for tacos and margaritas!

Google
Really fun place! It has delicious food! All the tacos I had were simple but authentic and had plenty of flavor. The nachos had a delicious queso and the chips were perfectly crisp. I also had a great frozen margarita! It was strong but balanced. The happy hour menu had some great deals, so I highly recommend going between 3-6 PM Wednesday-Saturday to take advantage of them. They had plenty of room for various sized groups and allowed to go and pick up orders. It had two restrooms and a fun bar that singles/couples could easily sit at.

Google
Tio Fun is a great local restaurant in the Buchanan Arts District!! The vibe is fun and friendly. The tacos are authentic! The meat is flavorful. They make their own homemade salsa. Everything is fresh and delicious. This is going to be our new go-to for Mexican food as it is that good! Highly recommend. And they have an amazing patio perfect for summer!

Google
I got a little over stimulated by how good the tacos smelled coming out of the kitchen and wolfed down the carnitas taco before I thought to take a picture of it. The carnitas was perfect, so soft and tender, with the fat giving the meat a warm, savory accent. The steak, likewise, was amazing. It was well done but held so much flavor which is so rare to find in street tacos, too many overcooked the steak. Flour tortillas are… sublime. So warm, flowery, without a hint of dryness and no crumble. The green mild salsa had a nice little kick to it and you can’t go wrong with the homemade chips, which have the perfect crunch and perfect amount of salt, and salsa. The interior is charming, great music at Christmas time, without a sense of indulgence or pretense. Perfect, that’s what this place is.

Google
Fabulous family owned with authentic made from scratch Mexican food. They also make their own sauces! An absolute gem to visit and eat!

Google
Oh joy! What is this? A cool quick Mexican place I can walk to? The owner Mikey was friendly as soon as I walked in and there were other neighbors there I had met up with before. It already feels like this restaurant will be a great spot in the area for all the neighbors to get to know each other. I usually just hit up tacos from Velvet and other spots but the tacos here were a cut above. Good flour, everything stays together and some nice sauce options and it was cheap cheap! Like, you could spend as much as taco bell cheap. I will definitely be here again!

Google
Tios is great. Came in out of town from PA and had tons of Mexican living in La for over 10 years. They make some great food and the owner is super kind. We came here with 4 adults and 4 kids and he treated us with such warmth. The kids all got a fantastic meal and received a pinwheel fan and ice pops for free! The kiddos even asked for guac and sour cream and got it for free. Can’t recommend this place enough. We have been here twice since we have been in the area for only 4 days. We will probably be back tomorrow 😂

Yelp
The food here is amazing! I am from Southern California and these are the best tacos in Nashville! Service was great sadly we were the only ones here! Should be a crime! But the music? Need better music hahah was a bit aggressive

Yelp
We love walking to this restaurant on our neighborhood strolls. The tacos are always spot-on, the margaritas are delicious, and the ambience is superb. We have dined inside and outside on the patio, if we bring our cat on a walk we obviously sit outside. There are fun decorations and a game you can play (which is Nashville themed) while you wait for your food. We are always treated with kindness when we come here. I wish that the menu was more up-to-date, we ordered a quesadilla and were surprised that it came with grilled pineapples (which were not listed on the menu). It was still enjoyable, but we probably would have ordered a different menu item. I suppose I would request that it be clarified that if you order a certain protein (listed under the taco menu) it will come with the listed sides (even if you order a quesadilla).

Yelp
Everything went well! This place is definitely a must try! I am from Corpus Christi TX and this is really good! We had almost everything! And it was so good! Coconut rum margarita is a must try.

Yelp
Good food and pretty good service. Got the frito pie, one arrachera taco and one Al pastor taco with corn tortillas. The tacos were super yummy and the meat wasn't dry. The frito pie was small but worth it. Would recommend this place if you're looking for quick bites. They also have free lollipops and plenty of parking. The vibe of the place is chill.

Yelp
Fun Mexican Food! Tio Fun is where you need to visit if you're looking for some "different Mexican fare." This is not your regular Mexican menu. This is a clean little joint where you order at the counter, find your seat, and your food is brought to you. The staff were not overly friendly, but they were efficient. The food menu has 4 main sections; Tacos, Breakfast Tacos, Munchies, and Sides. We ordered from three of these menu sections. My friend ordered Al Pastor and Barbacoa Tacos. He loved them! He especially enjoyed the sweetness the pineapple added to the Pastor tacos and the tenderness of the Barbacoa. He added some of the house made Garlic Habanero Hot Sauce for a bit of a kick. I ordered the Steak Lonche from the Munchies section and the Corn In A Cup from the Sides. The Steak Sandwich was delicious! The skirt steak was cubed and cooked perfectly. The grilled peppers and onions mixed well with the Queso con Chili to make the sandwich warm and gooey. And the hoagie roll held up perfectly to all the fillings inside. It was a good size for lunch. The Corn in a Cup was large enough to be shared by 2 people. It had nice flavor and texture. I was told it was typically served cold and was asked if I wanted it warmed when I ordered it. I said yes, and it was served at room temperature. It's a tasty dish with way more corn than mayonnaise, and the Flaming Hot Cheetos Crumbles added nice crunch and texture. The restaurant has lots of tables and looks freshly painted. The restaurant has a nice bar and an outdoor patio that will be fun to enjoy when the weather is warm. I recommend Tio Fun for lunch and I plan to return soon. The food is good and worth the price charged.

Yelp
Worthy of a 6th Star. Tacos were hearty and flavorful. We sampled all the salsa's...the hot was superb. Homemade queso had some kick which we loved. Mexican corn was good. Service was great. Parking on side and in the back. They have a nice little thing here...

Yelp
Had such a great experience here with my wife! We both really enjoyed the ambiance with the music and decor (brought us back to living in Tucson). The food portions are MASSIVE, so don't worry about going hungry here. Given the size of the portions, pricing is very fair in my opinion. Place your order at the window and the staff brings your food to your table. All very clean inside. We had the fries, frito pie, Tijuana dog, and the fried chicken torta. Would absolutely recommend! We will be back!

Yelp
Best alllll the things. Love the tacos both flour and corn, have tried every single one including breakfast. Order the chorizo guesadilla & chips and queso for the WIN. And don't sleep on the frozen margarita, it is banging. This is SLIVING.

Yelp
I ate the most delicious breakfast tacos today, and thought you might like to know about it. This place is where it happened. The flour tortillas are made from scratch, soft and fluffy, like Loveless biscuits. The beans are almost like a bean sauce, which sounds weird, but perfectly compliments the yummy, non greasy, potatoes and eggs. The two taco sauces were right up there with the tortillas, the red is hot but not too hot, and the green just the right balance of flavors. My BF is from Texas, I'm from California so we're picky as hell and this place checks all the boxes for both of us- I'm used to breakfast burritos, he's used to breakfast tacos- it's the best of both worlds! The friendly server told us it gets really lively at night. Great bar menu with imported beers, and many non alcohol options. First time I've seen a shot of tequila referred to as Mexican mouthwash, lol. When you've lived in Nashville as long as we have, it's great to discover new neighborhoods. This area is called the Buchanan Arts district. It reminds me of 12th South in its very early days. We'll definitely be coming back to Tio fun soon. Ps The ambience is perfect, we loved the shrine to fun uncles, featuring my fav of all time, Uncle Rico.

Yelp
What an amazing addition to Nashville's food scene! Tio fun was opened by the couple who runs The Mockingbird, and featured an extremely fun and playful menu of 'Mexican Munchies'. They also have a shrine to all famous uncles (think: uncle Jesse, uncle Rico) to keep with the theme. It's counter service, and the food comes out pretty fast. There's also margaritas available and the frozen margarita was phenomenal - pro tip to ask for a little tajin for in it! They've got delicious breakfast tacos, playful eats like the Tijuana Dog and Mex-Izza, and save room for churros or shaved ice for dessert. Can honestly say the entire experience was top notch from start to finish. Every item we tried was tasty and the staff were incredible. Have a feeling this place is going to be a staple!

Yelp
This place is super festive! The outdoor patio is vibrant and relaxing. Service is on point, very outgoing. The tacos melt in your mouth and have lots of meat. I loved the special touches. These include a Selena cutout, shrine of fun uncle photos and the piñata in the bathroom to name a few! Great casual spot with fabulous prices.

Yelp
Tasty, terrific tacos! The egg and chorizo, and arrechera tacos were fantastic. Plus some solid margaritas
google avatar

Adrian H.

Yelp
A very fun vibe. They put a lot of thought into ambience, with random cacti and fun colors and a great Spanish music mix of mainstream hits like "I Will Survive" and "Jolene" en español! Service was very fast and friendly. Order at the counter, and it's soon delivered to your table. That said, the food was not even at a mediocre food-truck level. Taco meat cooked down to bland, brown, unremarkable globs, all of it....the pastor, the barbacoa, the chicken. Not even the house-made bottled sauce could enliven it. Sad to say there was nothing vibrant or energetic or interesting about the food.

Yelp
There's nothing on their menu that you won't enjoy. I've been here multiple times and each visit is a HIT! I love that they serve breakfast tacos ALL DAY. I personally love the potato and egg breakfast taco. Don't forget to ask for the spicy salsa; it's the best combination of tingly and delicious on my taste buds. Speaking of taste buds, their freshly-made flour tortillas are absolute fire. I would love to just take home a bunch of these tortillas home. I also love the al pastor taco, the guac, the queso, and the Tijuana dog! And don't forget to save some room for dessert! The churros are the perfect end to your meal.

Yelp
Went to Tio Fun for the first time tonight and it was pretty good! The vibe is cute and fun, and the food is good too. We got the fancy tia salad, mexican pizza, guac and chips, a side of rice, and charred jalapenos. The mexican pizza was enormous and not great. I wish we were told how much food it was going to be because we barely ate any of the pizza. My boyfriend also got a margarita that was mediocre. Next time we will have to skip the margarita and pizza and try the tacos!

Haley S.

Yelp
Was very okay. My bowl had no flavor was pretty disappointed! Also the queso was very bland and didn't have much flavor too. I was really hoping to like this place!

Alicia Y.

Yelp
Really great and interesting food! I got the Pochos and they were delicious! Parking can be a little hard to find, but there's street parking around if you're willing to walk.

Jason K.

Yelp
What an awesome spot. Nashville has no shortage of amazing Mexican food and Tio fun belongs with the very best. Such a unique take and everything was delicious with tons of flavor. This is a must try!!!

Chelsea K.

Yelp
New favorite Mexican restaurant in Nashville! It's very fun and unique. Love their menu, you can't go wrong. Favorite have the been the breakfast tacos served all day long - loved the chorizo and cheese tacos and potato and cheese tacos! The Pochos munchies were amazing as well. Great salsa choices, I wanted to take a bottle of the Sweet Heat home. A must try!

Thomas M.

Yelp
Chef Maneet just made it to the final four in the 5th Annual Championship on the cooking channel. By having the high score of the evening tonight, 3/31/24, she chose Tio Fun to get the $5,000 donation! So I know this restaurant must be fantastic. Next time visiting Nashville I'll eat at Tio Fun! Hope you will also.

Chris F.

Yelp
Just had 3 breakfast tacos. Bean and cheese was good. Bacon, egg and cheese was great. But the potato egg and cheese was out of this frickin world. Next time I will try the Super Taco. This is a great place. Our neighborhood needed this

Angy H.

Yelp
The service was excellent. I tried the chilaquil torta, and its diverse textures were truly enjoyable. Knowing it originates from Mexico City with the addition of sour cream, I was a bit disappointed it didn't come with it. However, aside from that, the experience was fantastic. The churros were outstanding. My main critique revolves around the aguas frescas--they tasted good but were exceptionally small. A bit pricey but would definitely recommend to friends!

Mark P.

Yelp
Fun casual restaurant. Had the carnitas, arrachea, and barbacoa tacos. All of them were outstanding, though my favorite was the arrachea by a very slim margin! House margarita was great. The staff was courteous and very fast. I am already looking forward to my next visit!

Rachel ..

Yelp
This is Texan approved! The tacos are so amazing and you can tell everything is fresh. I wish the margs weren't as watery but maybe I need to try them frozen. The service was great and I loved the look inside. I'd give 10 stars if I could!!!

Q Q.

Yelp
As the name suggests this is a fun place with great food. I especially recommend the churros. This place will definitely be a regular stop for us.
