Oh, man, the Sangria!
I wanted seafood, and my family's usual go-to place has gone out of business, which we were saddened to realize that their great meals were gone forever. After a search for seafood, and trying to avoid the chains, I surprisingly convinced my wife to come to Tio Pepe. Made a call just before 7pm Saturday to see if they could take us at 7:30pm and there was no problem! Made the reservation, got the kids together, and made the short drive to stay within NE Philly.
After finding some street parking, came to the "side" door with some very loud thumping music and TVs blaring. This is the bar. We wanted the upstairs restaurant which is quite nicely set up and holds about 30 or so. One of the tables was marked Reserved for us. My son made mention that everything was in Spanish and I had agreed, but we were quickly corrected that this was a Portuguese restaurant, and this is how everything was stated in their menu.
I wanted a drink, and the waitress convinced me to try a Portuguese beer which I had never tried before. The Sagres was a great lager. But there was something even better coming.
While chowing down on our appetizer of Lulas Fritas (Fried Calamari) and two Creme De Mariscos (Seafood Bisque Soup), I happened to notice that many other tables were having a pitcher of Sangria placed before them. My wife was saying "Yes, I want that," with her eyes, and I asked for one to the table. We both loved it! Filled with fruits of apples and oranges, this sweet drink just made the whole night. The waitress commented that they have the best in the State. I don't know how they got this distinction, but it is well deserved even if it's not true. The person in charge said he had been making numerous changes over time to the recipe to get it just right and a lot of customers love it. You can count us as part of the believers.
As far as our food, the calamari was crunchy and the spicy marinara sauce was not too hot. The soups were just ok as my daughter and wife thought they had too much cilantro in them. Daughter had Salmao Grelhado (Grilled Salmon in Butter Lemon Sauce) and the piece of salmon was large and well cooked. She had a side of vegetables which were quickly eaten along with saffron rice which was not and also a large portion. Son had Frango A Marsala (Chicken Breast Sauteed with Mushrooms in our Marsala Sauce). He asked for a side salad which was not eaten unfortunately because he did not like the homemade vinaigrette on it and also french fries (this is a weird combo, but he was happy with it.) He ate a lot of fries and some of the chicken, and liked what he had. My wife had a Filet Mignon (which is the same in English!) She got it just how she asked for it, and was happy with the dish. She had the salad and vegetables and liked them, too. I had the Paehla Valenciana (Combination of Lobster, Clams, Mussels, Shrimp, and Scallops Served in our Saffron Rice). This was the plate of the night. A huge portion the size of a 33RMP record or larger with everything in the menu and the taste was great. We were told we would not finish it, and we didn't, leaving some for breakfast and lunch the next day.
Overall, very very pleased with Tio Pepe. I'm not 100% that I'd bring the family back (or younger children), but absolutely bring the wife for a pitcher of Sangria and to share some of that awesome Paehla. The heated rolls were also pretty awesome.
Service was very attentive and accommodating.
