The Eater NY Guide to MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village - Eater NY

"Here’s a private rifle club considered the oldest Italian American society in the United States. Across the street is a famous row of townhouses with a common courtyard in back. Celebrity occupants have included Bob Dylan (92-94 MacDougal) when it was slummy in the late ‘60’s." - Robert Sietsema

Google
The best place in Greenwich Village for a chicken parm and some target practice. Went with a dozen former teammates and had an incredible time.

We were invited for dinner by friends. Turned out to be one of the nicest evenings and so special. The food was excellent. The service was perfect. And then the trip to the basement to shoot a 22 rifle! How unusual is that in NY? The whole place with its beautifully paneled rooms takes you back to a different time. Can’t thank our friends enough!

Google
Some of THE best Italian food I have ever had in my life! Extremely friendly staff - at times, I didn't feel like I was in a restaurant - I felt more like I was at a friend's house with some of his other extremely kind friends, who just so happen to make some of the best food in NYC. Looking forward to going back soon!!

Yelp
As the world's leading authority on clams and clamcentric cuisine, I have had the privilege of sampling a myriad of clam dishes from across the globe. However, there is one dish from one single restaurant that stands out as a culinary masterpiece - Clams Casino from Tiro A Segno. This classic dish, with its harmonius blend of flavors and textures, is a testament to the versatility and richness of clams. Before I go into the details of this most amazing dish, I need to recommend that you don't forget that this restaurant has a proper dress code. Men need to dress in a collared shirt and jacket or they will throw you out like the dog you are and send you back to Olive Garden where you belong. This restaurant has a proper four-course meal. My only disappointment that all four courses could not be their Clams Casino. The first bite of this dish is a sensory explosion. The tender, succulent clam meat, nestled in its shell, is perfectly complemented by the crisp, smoky bacon. The dish is further enhanced by the addition of bell peppers and onions that remind me of how my grandmother learned to make this dish while fleeing Mussolini nearly 80 years ago. The garlic and butter provide a rich, savory undertone while the splash of white wine adds a hint of acidity, cutting through the richness and bringing a refreshing lightness to the dish. The presentation of the Clams Casino is also a sight to behold as they are a visual feast served in their shells. I brought home a couple of the empty shells to make Christmas ornaments to help me remember the greatest plate of food that I ever consumed. In conclusion, Clams Casino is a dish that truly celebrates the humble clam and the glorious heritage of Italy. If this plate of Clams Casino existed in 1492, Christopher Columbus would've had no reason to cross the ocean. They also let you shoot guns in the basement.

Yelp
This private only club has delicious food. It's old world and you're taking care of from the time you walk in until when you leave. Don't forget to go downstairs to the shooting range and see how good your firing is . I love their pasta and their mozzarella and tomato salad. My friends had fish and steak . If you're able to get into this club and someone's a member, it's definitely worth the experience. I look forward to coming back.

Yelp
It is one of my top 5 meals, ever. I was not sure what to expect when we arrived at the private club. We were greeted at the door by a gentleman wearing a pistol but when we got inside the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was an old time gentleman's club with lots of wood and leather. We first sat in the bar area and had cocktails and snacks. The cocktail was very well made and they did not rush us to the dining room. The dining room, while large, felt small and you could have a conversation and not have to worry about anyone listening. The first course was a Wagu Steak Tartare and I was like nothing I have ever had. Next came a pasta course and then the main course. All of the food was excellent and while the asked what wine you wanted with each course we just followed their recommendations and it was exceptional. Between dinner and dessert our host suggested we go to the basement. I did it with some trepidation not knowing why he made the suggestion. We got down there and there was a 3 lane shooting range. The range had an instructor in each lane, all wearing side arms, and the gave us 5 shells and a rifle and taught us how to shoot. By the 5th shell I has a bullseye and I have never shot a gun. It was a fun experience but the waiting area is small and could be claustrophobic. We had dessert after and it was excellent. I look forward to being invited back again.

Yelp
High end tradition. Something's shouldn't change and haven't. A long history of civic duty, hospitality, and fine cuisine, with old Italian roots.

Yelp
Wonderful and exceptionally authentic Italian food. The atmosphere is also very high- dress pants jacket required - no dirt bags!

Yelp
Must have proper attire - no jeans even if it's fashionable - no casual clothes - guess my tennis outfit didn't fit their criteria - managers are snooty - staff super kind and pleasant. Once they know whose guest you are - then they change their tune. Managers need attitude adjustment - they never smile or show any proper etiquette - it goes along way if you'll be a manger. They were trying to make up for it after they found out who our host was. Food is beautifully presented but the balance of tastes are not amazing. average overall and the Cesar salad served in cheese shell is old school. I didn't enjoy the salad at all as it was bitter. Was not happy w my meal overall but the servers were outstanding and tried making up - by their dashing sense of humor. Happy I'm usually a guest to my friends.

Yelp
Man this place is cool. It is a time capsule that you can only find in a City like New York. It has been at this location since 1924 & has served the Italian American community since its founding on August 14, 1888. No jeans allowed so everyone looks like they might be at a country club or maybe an Italian Embassy, if you're judging from the outside appearance of the building alone. But it is actually home to a South Village black tie rifle club. Visitors enjoy a fine wine or cuisine & engage in target practice. There is a large game room on the top floor with exposed brick, a billiard table & large couches for socializing near a full bar. The dining areas have wood panels & the staff is dressed in jackets.. It's a real slice of old school Italian Manhattan history so I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to visit.

Yelp
Like all upper middle class white women I've always wondered if Angelina Jolie movies were realistic. Can you shoot a gun in 4 inch Valentino heels and a super cute but respectable mini slip dress. The answer is yes. I've never felt more powerful. I get guns and even Texas a bit more now. Do I need reproductive rights if I can end others, probably but I'm less sure now. I now want, no NEED, a Range Rover a huge house in Conyers farm with a shooting range and a bunch of little waspy kids named Asher, Miles, or Barrtett. Not that I needed Tiro to help me uncover this about myself but shooting a gun in an nyc basement dressed like a fucking rockstar did help. Oo ok the food. I sorta expected more from this place. The pasta was ok, the chicken was bleh and the drinks were mediocre. I guess you come for the power trip of shooting and load up on carbs to calm yourself down.

Yelp
The absolute best private Italian heritage club in America . The oldest also. Two magnificent townhouses next to each other.

Yelp
A private club with old world charm and impeccable service. Wonderful food served by friendly funny staff. Loved the experience!

Yelp
What a wonderful experience. Food was delicious, service top notch! I am so happy that I was able to go with a member.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, food and overall experience. Riffle range in the basement, pool table lounge upstairs. This place is a hidden Gem in NYC.

Yelp
What a grand experience! I was lucky enough to be brought here and most likely will be back. The food was delectable literally. The staff is attentive and cordial. The appetizers are tasty and fresh. I had caprese, sardines, eggplant, some potatoes, mushrooms, asparagus, burrata, and calamari salad. The breadsticks are from scratch- so are the desserts!!! My favorite are the almond cookies. We had the truffle ravioli it is to die for- creamy and perfectly cooked. Then opted for lamb chops and veal. Just as delicious. It was tender and juicy with some fat. I am a lamb fat lover. Overall dinner had to be 11/10. The Prosecco was from Italy- I LOVED IT. Don't forget to try the tiramisu and lemon pana cotta. Also went down to see the rifle club range downstairs after! Real underground and classy ambience. Don't say no if you are invited to this gem!

Yelp
If you ever have the honor of an invitation here - ACCEPT IT AT ALL COSTS! This private club in the West Village is so unique and Old New York. I've had the privilege of coming here a few times and each experience was classy and wonderful. I've been here for a few private events and once as a lunch guest of a member. As others have stated, there's a shooting range in the basement. OMG is that so fun and unique! I highly recommend shooting if you're offered. The staff here is very clear and patient. DRESS CODE Dress code is formal where men MUST wear a tie to shoot. It is definitely a place you'd wear pantyhose. You will not be overdressed - trust me. Modesty and class is key here. The food is so delicious but it's the classy service and lovely atmosphere that I was so smitten by.

Yelp
I'd say over all the place was nice and enjoyable to go every now and then with some people. The food is nothing special (maybe some bias, being that I'm a first generation Italian American) but if you don't know any better it's pretty good (no offense). They also do give a really good amount which is nice, the drinks are up to par which is good as well. I'm not for guns, but those of you who are.. you probably will enjoy this place since it gives you a nice urban feel to a 3 sectional gun range in the basement( wavier signed is needed if you are allowed to make use of this activity). You will only be able to attend this place if invited or a member so .. for those who just got gun happy I wish ya luck.

Yelp
Omg this place is beautiful. The food, excellent. The service perfect. The range, bang, bang, bang, bullseye.... if you can make it, get there.

Yelp
My dad has been a member for over 50 years-if you think this place is old school now, you should have seen it before it was renovated a couple decades ago! Anyway, the food is always terrific and reliable (if not cutting edge, or close to it). They will make you just about anything you want. Great value, since they're not trying to make a profit. Mob jokes aside, it's quite a classy joint-everyone dresses to impress (unless a guest isn't clued ahead by their host) and it's always civil. A date I took there didn't believe me when I told her we could target shoot during the meal-so when the captain asked if we were going to shoot, and would we like to after the primi or the pasta course, she just about slipped off her chair! It's a very, very special part of NYC-so if you ever have a chance to go, don't miss it.

Yelp
Now I have to admit, I know that New York has everything maybe except Palm trees and warm weather all year round, but if you want some excitement in your life there are a litany of things to do and places you can go. For a Company Holiday Party I could not have enjoyed myself more, from great catered Italian food to a luxurious 4 story Colonial Brownstone with masseuses and a Shooting range downstairs and cigars for the taking I was in a dynamic Wild Wild West. A Classic Good Girl gone bad scenario and I have no regrets. This place was a ton of fun, although the DJ needed a little work, but besides that I felt like I attended a very grown House Party and would not mind going again! I took home my target after my shooting range experience, lets just say I have a wicked aim ;-).

Yelp
I was fortunate enough to be able to dine at Tiro a Segno on Saturday night- what an exceptional experience! Came in and was greeted by David who was kind, courteous and friendly and escorted my party into the parlor area for some pre dinner cocktails. Afterward we made our way into the dining room for dinner and we're presented with the menu along with specials and recommendations for our courses. Our meal started with hot and cold antipasti wheeled in by a cart. Prosciutto di Parma, marinated eggplant, marinated mushrooms, shrimp, clams- you name it is was on our table! A selection of 3 different pastas of our choosing followed and our party could not stop raving about how delicious each was (try the pacchieri it was so good!!) We felt like we literally couldn't eat a bite more and we're then invited to the shorting range downstairs to take a break from our dinner- how many places in NYC have this offering?! None! So much fun downstairs and afterward we headed back to enjoy our main entree. Try the filet mignon and snapper- excellent! Topped off our meal with cheeses, cookies and another cart that came with freshly made desserts. Before we concluded our meal we were able to take a tour of the townhouse. All in all, a memorable meal all around. I hope to be back!

Yelp
Excellent food with a truly 'old New York' charm to it with supreme service to match. This establishment has been frequented by many famous and historical figures over time. If you are invited to go for a drink or a meal, do not turn it down, and research it a bit before so you can appreciate your visit fully. You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful premises: love the architectural detail on both the first floor (dark, wood paneling) and the fourth floor (exposed brick walls and ceiling rafters, wooden shutters). The staff was friendly: playful by the bar, detailed in the gun range, and professional in overall service. My favorites: (1) The meatballs: moist, flavorful; (2) The cookies (amaretto with pine nuts? a-ma-zing); (3) The gun range: what a fun (and safely run) sidebar to any celebration!

Yelp
I just got a Timehop notification from my post of this little gem 6 years ago...and I had to search for it by my description of the address because I remember it being Members Only and having no sign/indication of what's inside the 3 adjoined brownstones. I was told to dress up and that men had to wear sports coats, so I knew this was going to be an experience. And, boy, was it ever! The authenticity of this place pours into every dish that leaves the kitchen. I can't recall what I ate, specifically, (plus, I believe everything was ordered for us by the sponsor of our evening,) but I remember that it was unlike anywhere I had ever eaten before in NYC. Plus, the New York Rifle Association is in the basement - who doesn't like to get drunk on the finest Italian cuisine and wine the city has to offer and then go shoot a rifle?! (I did wear the eye patch to either 1) increase my target perception, or 2) minimize seeing-double. Whatever the reason - this photo prompted me to do my research and I'm so happy that I was able to locate them and review - I don't even think Yelp was around in 2009!

Yelp
Cocktails & guns? I try not to mix the two but made an exception for this swanky club. My first try out, I was able to shoot Osama's eyes and mustache line, not bad! The food is amazing and won't quit. . . literally it feels like there are nine courses. The "desert cart" is like visiting willy wonka's factory, - neverending. There's a cigar floor as well that I'll have to try next time out. Tiro rocks.
google avatar

Yelp
A gun club in the Village? Rather unique. Was there for a non-member social event, but I'd invite the opportunity to go back some time for a meal and check out the type of people who frequent the place -- maybe even get invited to use some firearms at their shooting range in the basement. Has the ambiance of a New York steakhouse -- pleasantly stuffy. Next time I'll... bring my smoking pipe and favorite rifle
google avatar

Yelp
I grew up in a Italian family and I lived in Bologna Italy for 5 years. Last night at Tiro a Segno I've had the best meatballs of my life! In addition the rest of the meal was superlative. It doesn't get much better than this and Chef Giani has to be one of the best chefs in New York City besides being simpatica!

Yelp
I was fortunate enough to come here after a member closed off the top floor of the club for a private party. The room was separated into 3 sections, one had the bar and TV area, the second had a pool table and some sofas for seating and the third had tables with chairs for eating. The overall ambiance is very similar to a steakhouse, so you can expect some more old-school features and architecture throughout. I am not sure if it was required for just our party, but all men are required to wear jackets. The bar had a good assortment of drinks available and the in-house food was all very good. Here, you have your typical old-school Italian staples - penne cooked al dente, some eggplant/chicken parmiggiano, vegetables and potatoes as well as some veal. Although it was sitting in the hot trays, everything was still cooked well and not overdone. I look forward to the next time I am invited to an event here and being sure I make it down to the riffle range in the basement (closes at 11pm).

Yelp
This was the first time I had spent a holiday eating out and was invited to dine here for Thanksgiving .. From start to finish everything was excellent. The service impeccable. One word of Criticism you didn't tell me how much food was served. I ate way too much!!!! Thank you again for an enjoyable holiday and I didn't have to lift a finger.

Yelp
From the moment you step into this private members only club, you are taken care of. From the bar which mixes up incredible cocktails. Through the four course dinner which consists of apps, salad, entree, and dessert. All of which were excellent. To shooting rifles in the professional rifle range in the basement. Everything is incredible and I cant wait to visit again. I am very thankful to my friends for the experience.

J. N.

Yelp
What a special place. Had a delicious authentic Italian dinner and it felt like old New York. Clubby friendly atmosphere. A hidden gem for members only.

Yelp
I came here with my boss and co-workers for our Holiday party and I have to say it was absolutely superb. Real old school which I love, beautifully appointed, and the food is delicious. The shooting range in the basement was awesome and we had a great time. My boss is a member and he frequents it often and now I can see why. We had a blast.

Yelp

Yelp
Sooooo many courses! Great spot though. Old School vibe and good food.

Yelp
This place is unreal. I feel very lucky to have been invited. One part central casting from Goodfellas, one part old school Italian kitchen, one part high class redneck gun range, equals an outstanding night.

Joe C.

Yelp
A club members only joint. I attended the Gun Club through my companies xmas party and I had a great time. The service was good, food was better than i expected and it was served family style. They cooked my bone-in ribeye perfectly and if you ever go there you gotta try their ravioli with truffle sauce, or truffle ravioli, either way it was delicious! in short, Grab a few drinks, enjoy the food, shoot some bolt action rifles, shoot some craps (funny money).

Yelp
Food is very good, atmosphere is even better. If your a member, a great place to go with friends kick back relax, shoot some pool or play cards in the lounge and or sit in the dinning room for dinner. Also a great place to bring the family around the holidays. My parents, my brother and his family, and myself and my kids went today for palm Sunday. They had Easter egg hunt, face painter, arts and crafts for the kids and a great meal for the adults. Oh yea the Easter bunny even made an appearance.

FinanceGuy E.

Yelp
Proud to say that I am a member here. Privilege to be a member of the oldest Italian-American club and gun club in NYC and the country. Very exclusive place consisting of around 450 members at best. One of the best things is the dress code...Jacket and tie at all times for men. Great place to go for a romantic date, guys night or even host a party. I use it quite often for business(clients love it) and pleasure. Everything on the menu is excellent. Meals are served in courses (app, pasta, entree, cheese/fruit/cookies and then the desert cart). All deserts are made in-house which is hard to come by. Wine list is a binder with endless choices. Beautiful place, great atmosphere, great history, great food and did I mention shooting after dinner? What more can you want. If you appreciate finer things and good food...Try to get an invite to here!
