The Best Tacos in Houston | Eater Houston

"With three locations across the Houston area, this taco treasure aims to deliver the ultimate birria experience in the city. TJ Birria y Mas uses three cuts of beef in its daily pot of birria to achieve a perfect balance of tenderness and flavor. Order your birria in the standard taco style. Get cheesy with quesabirria tacos, or slurp up a bowl of birria ramen, which envelops the palate like a hug from grandma." - Brianna Griff

The 18 Best Restaurants in The Heights - Houston - The Infatuation

"TJ Birria Y Mas is one of the only birria spots in The Heights, and it happens to be pretty great. TJ’s savory, silky birria de res gets stuffed into an unfathomable number of different tortilla and cheese configurations. As well as smushed over mashed potatoes and ladled into spicy ramen. We like to head here with a few friends, split as many quesabirrias and consome as possible, and finish with a few warm churros and nutella to split. You know, just a casual meal." - gianni greene, chelsea thomas, julie takahashi

18 Excellent Houston Taquerias

"Born in early 2020 at the beginning of the worldwide pandemic, this Heights taco treasure strives to provide the best birria experience in Houston. Three cuts of beef are used to cook their birria daily, resulting in a perfect balance of tenderness and flavor. Order your birria in the standard taco style, get festive with quesa-birria tacos, or their heartwarming birria ramen, which will envelop your palette like a hug from your grandmother." - Brittany Britto Garley

TJ Birria Y Mas - Review - The Heights - Houston - The Infatuation

"While we know TJ Birria Y Mas in The Heights serves birria, the “mas” seems to be, well, more birria. The counter service spot tosses birria de res into every tortilla configuration imaginable: tacos, quesadillas, machetes, and beyond, all served with a side of consomé. Try it sprinkled over mashed potatoes, stirred into spicy ramen, smothered in cheese, wedged in a torta, or stuffed into a burrito. That’s some real birria innovation. While most folks are grabbing food to go, there’s a small dining room for you to fly solo or share a birria platter with a small group of friends. We also recommend not skimping on the napkins. photo credit: Richard Casteel" - Chelsea Thomas

Google
I loved going here. The birria is always so good and the waters omg. However, they recently did some remodeling that Im just not comfortable in anymore. Not to mention, they got rid of the metal trays :( They traded it out for a weirdly angled cutting board. I dont know, but personally I missed the casual setting of everything. The times I went they would play house music instead of the chill latino music, at times it was overwhelming and loud during our meal. I'm adding my previous pictures. Again, the food top notch amazing. It's just I rather not keep asking for an extra plate cause the aesthetic is more important.

Google
This was a spur of the moment choice to eat at when I first came for food & since then its been a great go to for delicious Mexican food. The food options are great. I so far had the XL quesiberria with their signature aqua frescoes, the berria ramen & the 3 berria tacos with selantro, diced tomatoes & shredded lettuce on the site to add.

Google
Their birria tacos are good but this establishment is taking advantage of their customers and they know it. I ordered an horchata drink which said $4.59 on the menu and was charged $6.00 is it a big deal? Not really but then you get a small glass which btw the ticket said 24oz. I asked for a manager and they did not want to attend to my concern. The manager decided to send one of the bussers and I showed them with a bottle of water that I filled which is 16.9 oz and filled their entire glass and did not even deplete the bottle of water. When they saw, they did not apologize, did not offer to withdraw the charge, or offer a drink to go to make up for it. Its not about getting back my money but the principle of taking advantage of their customers and not putting any effort to rectify tells me they rather cheat you than give you what they claim to sell. Not even an apology was given. Good birria but unfortunately for them they just lost another customer.

The cashier seemed friendly. We were able to find parking. We went on a Friday around noon maybe that's why. Usually it is hard to find parking in that area. The food was good. We spent $30 for 6 birria quesadillas.

I used to really like the mini tacos they served here before, but the last time I came my food was cold, which was disappointing. That’s why now I prefer to drive to Birrias & Más in Stafford, even though it’s a little far. I heard it’s the same owners and the same concept, but the seasoning and the staff over there are way better. Especially the one or two girls I always see working there on Monday mornings—they make the meat exactly how I like it: hot, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. (And if you leave a tip, please send it directly to the girls in the back—they truly deserve it!) Definitely worth the drive. I’ve visited this place in Stafford a couple of times. The first time, I really liked it — the meat was well-cooked, juicy, and full of flavor. That’s actually why I was considering hiring them for an event. However, yesterday, Thursday night, my experience was completely different. The birria tacos were burned, the meat was dry, the consommé came out cold, and it took almost 30 minutes to receive my order. On top of that, the manager treated me with a rude and arrogant attitude, which made the visit even worse. I really hope they improve, because I know they can do better, but this last experience was disappointing.

Google
Based on my experience, all of the positive reviews are 100% accurate. This is a nice spot for good food. I ordered the Burria Deluxe! The food was so delicious. At first glance, I thought this meal was only enough for a small appetizer, but it satisfied my hunger throughout the night. It took less than 10 minutes to get our food. I wasn’t expecting it to be ready so fast. I love the decor and layout. The staff were so friendly and professional. Excellent customer service. This was my first time eating here and I’ll definitely be returning. Great job!

Google
The tacos are good the Menudo it's ok, conchas with nutela are a must try so as Cafe de olla if you are looking for a desert. The atmosphere is really good, service is fast and reasonable prices. They have Brunch menu everyday and kids menu. Aguas frescas are really good.

Food was really delicious! Place was nice & clean. Food comes out right away whatever you order doesn't disappoint.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the birriadillas here! Very flavorful. I ordered the birriadillas con consome and it comes with 4 birria tacos, cilantro, limes, and a cup of consome. They also give you some green and red sauce. The service was friendly. We were checked on about two times and the food came pretty quickly. Parking is a bit limited but the inside is pretty spacious. There's a lot of seating and the decor is aesthetic and clean.

Yelp
Very welcoming staff, good service and quality food! It had been three years since my last visit! The restaurant has expanded, but you still get the warm neighborhood type vibe. There are also a couple of small tables outside for two. Try the chicken burrito which was a 10/10 and the birriadillas con consome was a 8/10. The only reason I rated the birriadillas a 8 is because the consome wasn't as flavorful as I remembered it to be.

Yelp
I finally got a chance to check this place out! I was starving and had an incurable craving for tacos. The hostess was extremely kind and did a great job of giving recommendations and encouraging us to try menu items. I decided to order a Topo Chico and the Birria Deluxe which includes 1 birriadilla (corn), 1 mini queso birria (flour), 1 mulita mini (corn tortilla) ex cheese, 1 vampiro (birria tostada) topped off with onion cilantro salsa roja. Served with cilantro, limes, and onions. I devoured all of it and washed it down with my sparkling water. Would recommend.

Yelp
Ambiance: Small eatery serving tacos & Mexican cuisine with a fun ambiance! This was my first time trying Birria tacos - so good! Paired nicely with a Mexican Coke. Quick and friendly service. Limited parking onsite. Great spot for a quick bite or to-go order. They have really yummy sauces! Decent pricing, would go back for lunch if in The Heights area. Do note that Durham & Shepherd are under construction, but it is still easy to park at TJ Birria.

Yelp
Loved the birria tacos, and the salsa was so good. The service staff was nice and the food came out quick. The eating space is more like a fast food place, but it's enough to fit the whole family. I had the birria tacos, and they were sooo good. It was filling because it had alot of tacos for the price.

Yelp
Came here because I saw they were serving brunch. Now the people who work there are excellent and kind. The guy even made a special quesadilla for my toddler. He probably knew how spicy our items were going to be because honey we could not really enjoy everything due to that. We thought we were going to share with our kid but that didn't happen because of the heat. Now we actually do eat spicy food and enjoy it but everything we had was saturated in it. My birria was good but overall my meal was cold. Brunch started less than two weeks ago so I think they are still getting their ducks in a row so to speak or whatever people say.

Yelp
We found this place on a whim while driving to Houston. Total chance appearance. But we were very happy! Food was good We shared the birria plate With fresh cilantro onions and lime Juju had a quesadilla and was very happy Chips wee fresh Juju loved the huge piece of tres leches cake Service was great-they greeted us and were cleaning up the tables constantly Man from the kitchen came and greeted multiple tables asking how they were doung Ambiance was nice Soft neon Chalk board menus High and low tables Clean Bathrooms too Very busy night! The beans-refried- very watery and bland That's my only issue here I'd recommend you stop in !!
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
Ordered a chicken torta to go. Got beef instead. Everytime I don't check my to go order (almost everywhere) this happens. I always tip at least 15% on to gos also, so it makes it worse. Alas, the torta was good enough though.

Yelp
I love this place!! The staff is always friendly and will answer any questions that you have. It is a small restaurant with cute decor indoors and a couple of tables outside if you're okay with the heat. My go to meals are the Birriadillias con Consume and the Papa Rellena which are both delicious. If you can't decide which one to get...GET BOTH!! I do add the red sauce to the consume to kick it up a notch. Also get the cucumber drink (no chamoy for me); it is so refreshing and if you're an adult then add a little tequila. The parking lot is not very big and there is construction in the area.

Yelp

Yelp
I remember them having a little food cart at the beginning and now they have their own store fronts! They have not disappointed once! Same consistency with flavors and the quantity. Cook to order, always fresh. They have a more options then just your typical Taco's de Birria. The most popular is their "Birriadillas" 4 corn tacos with their beef birria with shredded cheese. You get a side of consome & veggies (onion, cilantro, & lime). I've had their pastor street tacos, beef torta, and my favorite is their Papa Birria. The papa birria is mashed potato with cheese, birria, veggies (onions & cilantro), sour cream and consome. I always ask for extra consome because as you mix it definitely soaks it all up. With each dish they have two homemade salsas, one which is red and the other is green. Green has always been my favorite but both are as good! Lastly, I always get a Jarito preparado which is grapefruit soda served with chamoy, tajin, and a tamarindo stick. They always have a different agua frescas daily. Very refreshing! Great staff also.

Yelp
Service was what made this experience not worth the food. I waited for over 20 minutes for just an order of 4 birria tacos. What's worst is my order came out after a larger party that ordered and paid after I paid for my order. Won't be coming back.
google avatar

Yelp
Great service and great Birria! We got the birria tacos and birria platter, both were excellent! The platter is great because you can try a couple different things, although many are similar, but great value!

J J.

Yelp
As always a great spot to eat! This place never disappoint. They have a new brunch menu.

Yelp
What in the hell did I get hit with?! A flavor bomb!! We ordered the birria plate and birria deluxe platter. The intensity of the flavor over the meat was... . The deluxe platter was like a smorgasbord of birria errathang. Yes... errathang. We had so much left over. Three hours later, we were hungry again and popped our left overs in the air fryer... shiiiiiiii. The cheese pull on the quesadilla was long and, well... anything adjective I put after that will sound like I'm a thirsty beast. Oh! The agua Frescas were on damn point. I had a mix of jamaica and piña. Don't wait, get in your car and get some!!!

Yelp
First time here. The birria tacos hit the spot after a tough workout. I'll be back to try other menu items. The person at the counter was great too. Patiently explained all the menu items to me.
google avatar

Jaden B.

Yelp
I almost gave this 5* but it's my first time eating birria so I don't feel like I have enough experience to judge this birria against competitors. What I can say is that both my son and I LOVED it. The food was mouthwatering, his dressed soda was eye popping (although he wasn't a fan of the straw, but I'm not even sure we were using that properly?) and the atmosphere and vibe were really cute. Would definitely come back again!
google avatar

Yelp
We don't get too many places that make birria back home in the Chicagoland area so this place was a real treat. The parking lot is small so spaces will be limited. However, plenty of seating inside. They didn't have horchata available so I'll have to take away half a star. The food was delicious. We ordered a variety of items like the birria ramen combo (ramen and 2 birriadillas), birriadillas con consome, and birria quesadillas. Meat was very flavorful. Tortillas were fresh. In the ramen, they give you a very generous amount of both noodles and birria. You can add diced red onion and cilantro to the ramen to give it more flavor. Prices were very reasonable. Service was good. Overall 4.5

Yelp
revisited. My flexterian friend had birria which she enjoyedvetymuch and conchas which were flavourful and feshI had a Mexican Coke the vegan option Ample parand king prime location. It very clean, and the service is outstanding. A first choice reasonably priced.
google avatar

Erik N.

Yelp
As a fat guy I've had my fair amount of birria. It's all the rage now and it's everywhere. For my buck, the best birria you're going to find is at TJ Birria. You can't go wrong with anything at this place, but I'm addicted to the birria ramen. Get it with the birria ramen combo, which comes with two birradillas. The cucumber/lime agua is great, too.
google avatar

Gregston C.

Yelp
Legit authentic Mexican birria tacos, street tacos and burritos. As the name suggests their specially is the birria tacos (birriadillis con consume). Basically four small soft corn tacos with a little birria dipping sauce. If you want more sauce / soup, the ramen combo comes with a bigger bowl of birria. The other menu items are good too at add a little variety. You order at the counter as you enter. The staff are friendly and patient. They are happy to explain your options if it's your first time. It's a popular place so seating fills up but turns over quickly. The atmosphere is lively with Mexican music and people often singing along. Parking is a little challenging as the lot is small and there's currently construction on Durham, but it's all worth it at the end.
google avatar

Danielle R.

Yelp
Great service, fantastic food. I've been wanting to try Birria tacos and they did not disappoint! Flavorful, juicy and hit the taco spot!
google avatar

Robert J.

Yelp
Wow what a great place. We ordered the variety tray of birria tacos/ quesabirria. Very tender savory meat. Perfectly seasoned. The consommé for each of us put the tacos over the top. This was a very satisfying meal. They serve the tacos with onions and cilantro and limes. Altogether the pi's place is a definite return to place. Great music and very clean atmosphere. The parking a little limited so just be aware. They also have Mexican candies with chamomile and Tajik which my wife and daughter say it's the best they ever had. The desserts looked delicious but we were so full we didn't get to try them. Next time I will update y'all on desserts. This is a place I would recommend to anyone that loves good food

Storey J.

Yelp
Food was good but I recommend getting it to go or not at all. Girl with the face jewelry is very rude and had bad customer service.

Anton E.

Yelp
Delicious food, quick and friendly service, and a cool, vibrant ambiance. Total: $21.30.

Yelp
Great spot. Glad my husband found it. Great food, laid back and chill, good music selection. The owner is super sweet and everything is made fresh "hot off the press". If I could, I'd take this spot and move it to my house lol. Don't miss out!

Yelp
For my 35th birthday I was craving some tacos so my friend and I decided to come here and grab something to eat before heading to the bar. When we got here it was pretty busy but luckily we were able to grab a table. I went ahead and ordered the fish tacos & my friend got the tortas with consommé. My tacos were just okay, the fish was cooked to perfection and was not dry. Tilapia is the lowest grade of fish so I was impressed that they prepared it nicely. However, seasoned wise it was bland. They said it was blackened fish but the flavors were boring. The chipotle sauce was also not that good either. It tasted more like mayo. They did have green sauce so it did make the tacos taste a bit better. My friend Torta was solid, the meat was tendered and the bread was hot & fresh. The consommé wasn't savory as expected & more on the bland side. Overall, it was just an okay experience. I expected a 4.5 stars spot to be better but it was just passable for me. The ambience was tidy & clean. While I appreciate them cleaning the tables they need to change their rags because it smelled funky. The service was okay as well, the workers seemed tired & over it. Will I come back? I definitely am willing to give it another try. I will order the birria tacos next time.

Yelp
TJ Birria has become one of my favorite spots and is also where I first tried birrias. The food is crazy good- particularly the ramen combo where you get ramen in this delicious mexican broth with a bit of shredded beef + two birriadillas (dip it in the ramen broth for the best experience). Drinks: I LOVE their aguas frescas, especially the cucumber one and recently I've been getting them w/ some chamoy. Chefs kiss. Best of all, both locations (the heights & stafford) have ample seating and friendly customer service! I've been so many times and the food quality and customer service has been great each time. I really appreciate consistency. If you haven't been, you're simply missing out. Thank you TJ Birria y Mas for the delicious food and great service- keep up the good work!
google avatar

Katy N.

Yelp
Great burrito with no shortage of tasty ingredients. The Birria itself was delicious and flavorful. The lettuce and other vegetables were fresh. The rice was tasty. I have no complaints. Price is high for a burrito, but when it takes that long to build the flavors it makes sense.
google avatar

Bryan C.

Yelp
THIS PLACE IS . Ordered birria burrito. So good. Came with some au joi which was great. Good hot sauce. Highly recommend
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick bite. Ordered a couple of tacos and consume. Ordered and sat inside. They will bring you your meal to the table. Food was good but I have had better. If my food could've been dressed already I would've like that better. Didn't like ripping my food apart. But it was okay.

Mariana M.

Yelp
Pretty good! The beef was our favorite. The pastor and chicken were a bit dry but flavor wise were pretty good. Elote was pretty good. Rice and beans were good. Agua Fresca Pepino was pretty good but a little sour cause the lemon for my taste. We got their family pack of 12...with some rice and bean sides. The sides are small and enough for 1 person or 2 so just be aware of that.
google avatar

Yelp
It's delicious....very good food!! Service is good very friendly workers!! Good selection on the menu

Yelp
Came here with a friend to catch up and I wasn't disappointed! My friend had never had birria tacos before and I think this place is definitely a good place for someone trying it for the first time is good! They have a pretty vast menu and good combos to try multiple options. I got to the place early and was fairly hungry to I went to the counter to order some chips and salsa while I waited for my friend to arrive. They have a mix of short and high tables to sit for guests. The place is fairly small but can fit about 25-30 people so large groups over 6 will be crowded at a table. Once my friend arrived, I showed her the chalk board of menus and we spoke to the cashier about what they recommended. He also showed us the "secret" menu that they have specials for the day. I ordered the birria ramen which came with 2 birria tacos. My friend got their birria quesadilla which was HUGE! I also ordered some birria tacos and other foods to take home for my boyfriend. Their hibiscus drink is really good also! I really enjoyed the birria ramen, it was very delicious. The service was also great! They gave us a number and brought out the food fairly quickly! All tables were cleaned after the customers left so no dirty tables were left for too long. Food was great and my friend took the rest of her food home since it was alot. The sauces were also very delicious for the chips as well. I like spicy food so overall the sauces matched the spiciness for me. Definitely would come back here again to order food!
google avatar

Alfonso P.

Yelp
The birriadillas were amazing. The meat had good flavor but dipping them in the consome made them taste even better. I also had a Jamaica (hibiscus) drink. It was delicious and refreshing. Easily the best I've had in houston. Would definitely recommend this place to everyone and will definitely be back

Yelp
I love birria tacos, quesadillas, ramen, and whatever they make. Nom, nom, nom it's good

Yelp
I want to thank TJ Bibia and Mas in the Heights. They were awesome. The food is so good when you put the cilantro and the onion inside the little cup consume scoop your taco in there is the best The place the atmosphere the employees are awesome nice respectful thank you so much for the blessings. In this time of need hurricanes 2024

Yelp
This place is just amazing. Not only is the food SO delicious. The staff is awesome. The restaurant is clean and the kitchen gets food out almost immediately...it's honestly shocking. I decided to take myself on a date on a Saturday and eat inside alone and one employee offered me a free mimosa! Just fabulous.
google avatar

Zach S.

Yelp
This place is 10/10, no doubt about it. Every single thing we ordered was extremely delicious from the tostadas to the birriadillas to the salsas to the aguas frescas and the churros. You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
I've been looking for decent Tex-Mex/Mexican cuisine and am glad I stopped by. I ordered the burrito with birria and ramen. The burrito was solid with a good mix of lettuce, meat and cheese and was slightly crisped on the outside, making it perfect for dipping. The ramen, was decent with a generous helping of meat, however I found it a bit bland. In all fairness to the business, it was my first time trying this style of ramen, so it may just not be my preference. Also, my wife got the birriadillas con consome and was pleased overall. In terms of layout, ordering is done in the front, and there are plenty of tables for self-seating in the back. Service was quick and the person who took my order was patient and friendly while helping me navigate the menu. The restaurant is located in a small strip of retail outlets so there aren't a ton of parking spaces, however, from what I could tell there seemed to be a good flow of traffic into and out of the restaurant so parking didn't appear to be an issue. My only regret is that I didn't get to try their churros, so I will definitely be back. Overall, I'd say it's worth dropping by for its good food and service and laid-back atmosphere.
google avatar

Darlene O.

Yelp
Was expecting more especially with an overall 4.5 star review on Yelp. Nice location with ample parking. Restaurant is clean and cozy. Staff is friendly and patient to explain menu and answer my questions. What is lacking? FLAVOR. So far in the city the best birria tacos I've had have come from food trucks. It could use more salt but consomé was bland the quesabirria and mulitas were also bland. Which was disappointing.
google avatar

Lupe M.

Yelp
This place opened a few months ago in the West Heights area and I AM GLAD IT DID!!! One of th best places in Houston to get Birria. The food is delicious. The service is great. The atmosphere is very chilled. The place is small, but big enough for the clients it gets, the Tortas are really good, and the Birria Ramen combo is amazing. Prices are affordable, and the staff is nice. Enjoy! (I know I did!)

Yelp
Excellent I will definitely return service and food was very good, I will con continue to eat here

Yelp
Dined in on a Monday at 11:48 a.m. and it was not busy. There's a cute grass backdrop that says WAKE UP WORK HARD EAT TACOS. The picture of the taco looks like a dragon/whale hehe I ordered: Birria dillas: the meat inside the taco needs more flavor, I bit into nothing but cheese mostly, the consomme is perfectly seasoned Refried beans: SO GOOD! I could eat this all day Bistec street tacos: good flavors, I added slices of avocado and it made the taco! Birria ramen: must try! Very good! IG: sippin.champagne.with.chelle

Yelp
The besttttt Birria Tacos I've had and I'm a picky eater. They never disappoint I feel like they definitely put love into their food. The elotes are so good too. 10/10 for everything, even their Nutella concha's

Yelp
We walked here after our run club on a weeknight and were so glad we did. Now I wouldn't say they were my favorite birria tacos in Houston, but they were delicious. The line was fairly long and it took awhile to get our food (it's popular), but it was worth the wait. My boyfriend ordered the mini tacos somehow missing the fact that they weren't birria style and had no consommé, but he still loved them. Good amount of food for the price too. There's a decent amount of seating inside which is nice. I would 100% go back.

Yelp
Been seeing birria places pop up recently so finally decided to give it a try. Full disclosure, I am by no means an expert on Tex-mex, Mexican, or Latin American cuisine, so I am only reviewing on taste, not on authenticity. Showed up ~9 pm on Saturday and this place was packed. Guess I wasn't the only one craving a late night meal. Even with the main dining area full, there was a bar area on the other side with plenty of seating. I ordered the ramen combo (comes with two birriadillas) and would order again (5+/5). The consomme for the ramen was bursting with flavor, so rich and so delicious. I love that it came out piping hot. Pro tip: if you like your ramen noodles a little softer, eat the birriadillas first with the consomme and let the noodles continue to cook. I found that once I was done with the birriadillas, the ramen was my preferred consistency. I also had chopped cilantro and onions on the side. Tbh I didn't know what to do with these so just threw some in with the ramen. The birriadillas were crispy and the cheese melted nicely (not still chunky) and was wonderful after dipped. They bring you two sauces also but I found no need for them given the consommé took care of the flavor department. But I imagine that green salsa would be great on chips or anything without the consommé. We also ordered the hibiscus (4/5) and cantaloupe (5/5) agua frescas. The hibiscus was good but a little bit more tart than I was expecting so just a preference thing. The cantaloupe was so refreshing and you could see the smashed cantaloupe inside. Will definitely be back! Parking lot seems small, so can imagine it being difficult to park during peak hours. Glad my first birria experience was a success!

Yelp
I could not be happier about discovering this place right by my job! Truly some of the best tacos I've ever had! I usually get the street chicken tacos and they never disappoint. I have also tried the ramen and birria and they lacked flavor in my opinion. However, I have coworkers that often order these plates and they love it. Workers are always friendly here and food comes out relatively fast. The agua frescas are sooo sooo good as well you really cant go wrong with any of them. I definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for good Mexican food in the area!
