Tony visited a small town called Teotitlán del Valle and met Abigail Mendoza, a descendant from pre-Spanish Mexicans. She cooked a Chicken mole for him, using 35 kinds of chiles. The dish takes 2 weeks to prepare. She also made cow and pork brains cooked with chiles, tomatoes, and yerba santa.

For the price, I was expecting the quality of the food to be out of this world, but was disappointed. While the restaurant has amazing decorations and the staff is extremely nice and welcoming the food didn't fill the oaxaqueño experience and flavors. I had the prehistoric mole and the meat was tough and dry. The menu is different per day. You have two options for the soup and the main dish. You are first greeted with an añejo Mezcal shot. Their nieve for dessert was delish. But again for $500 pesos per person I wouldn't return. Also the place is 50 mins from Oaxaca central. So traveling the distance wasn't worth it for me.

Very authentic food. The place was a beautiful old casa well maintained with its old kitchen and wood burning stove. A worthwhile experience. Very clean.

I went there to visit Teotitlan and took advantage to try the food at the restaurant and oh wow what a disappointment, I don't know if people that rate high really knows the taste of authentic food from Oaxaca but, to me the mole prehispanico as it was mentioned, it really lacks of flavor and the meat was dry, as well as the mole negro, the mole was just like any other and the chicken was hard and dry, it is just the name and nothing else, not recommended if you really want to try a unique flavor from Oaxaca, rather go to the mercado and way less expensive.

Overpriced restaurant. Flavors are good but not great. It seems they may have been good in the past but you can find cheaper and better tastes in Oaxaca's food market in downtown.

Authentic food and atmosphere. The mole was great as was the house brewed beer.

Yelp
The worse meal we had in Oaxaca, the pork was tough & the chicken wasn't cooked. It was very $$$$$ but not worth it. People go because of Abigail Mendoza famous Chef, it was a real disappointment. Would NOT recommend it at all.

Yelp
This place has character. One of the best examples of traditional Mexican cooking I've ever had. The menu is simple with just a few choices. For the soup, I tried the Sopa de Flor Calabaza, which comes with a fried quesadilla. The soup was flavorful and quite good. We tried all three of the entree options and the two moles were very good. The Mole Negro de Pollo was spectacular with a nice sweetness that wasn't over powering. The Mole de Ajonjoli was a lighter, savory mole and it was quite good as well. The 3rd entree was okay, but then again, if you visit La Reyna de Mole, you best choose the mole. For dessert we tried several of the choices and they were all good. The flan didn't look like you would expect flan to look and it was more of S soup, but it was excellent. The Mendoza sisters have done a great job. If you are looking for an experience along with your meal, I recommend you make the journey.

Yelp
This was sadly the worst meal I've had in Mexico. I am still shocked at how bad this food was, but I guess the reviews as of late haven't been excellent (i.e. many Spanish reviews saying this food tastes like it's for gringos who can't handle flavor, and whether or not that's the goal, that's what it tastes like). But it wasn't just the boring underseasoned flavor, it was also the CHICKEN oh my god. I have never eaten a chicken so rubbery in my life. Really the worst chicken both me and my mom have ever consumed. The flor de calabaza soup was bland, underseasoned. Mole was flavorless. And even the rice and beans tasted like they came from a can, seriously! And while some fans of this place seem to critique the 1 star reviewers for not understanding or appreciating "real Mexican food," our problem here was the opposite- not that the flavors were too bold, but that they were extremely bland, poorly cooked and SO overpriced! My mom also said this is the only meal that's given her heartburn after 3 weeks of eating lots of spicy street food.. To respond to people who love this place and also are really weirdly fetishizing that they are wearing authentic Zapotec dress (duh, they are Zapotec women), if you really want "authentic" mole, go to a market and find a stand where you can get an amazing mole for half the price, and ten times as good. I wanted to love this place, I really did, but it's ridiculously expensive for the only bad food I've eaten my entire trip throughout the country of Mexico. Save yourself some money and a meal slot and eat literally anywhere else.

Yelp
If you are in Teotitian hunting for a rug, there is a fabulous restaurant you must try. Run by three sisters dressed in Zapotec garb, it is a real find. Try the chicken in a black mole sauce, best mole I have ever eaten. Open air kitchen where everything is hand made. Hand written menu. They even got us a taxi to take us back to Oaxaca. Truly a memorable experience.

Yelp
Unique food, beautiful crockery, great music and impeccable service. The menu today offered two soups, two mains and several simple desserts. Mezcal shots on the house. Smoky and crunchy blue tortillas and guacamole. I ordered the two pre-Hispanic options- nopales (prickly pear) soup, and chicken with red salsa and cochineals (insects from nopales). Finished with a good strong coffee and complimentary chocolate squares, a house speciality.

Yelp
Such an incredible experience. It's like being transported back into another era, since the menu only focuses on pre-hispanic Mexican dishes. Even if it's empty, go. Go in. Eat there. It's delicious and so unlike any other place we tried in Oaxaca.
