Where to Eat and Drink Along Lake Superior’s Scenic North Shore

"Technically speaking, Tobie’s isn’t on the North Shore, but it’s a requisite halfway stop between Minneapolis and Duluth. What was once a family-owned roadside stand is now a bustling business — it’s hard to miss the bright red roof just off I-35. Grab one of the famous caramel rolls for the road, or stop in for a late-morning omelet." - Justine Jones, Alex Lodner, Joy Summers

Visited on 7.3.2025.. The food and portion size were Great, and this is a very cozy place. Unfortunately, I felt like it is review the menu, order, eat and leave. Maybe it was the amount of people traveling along Interstate 35 on the day before a three-day weekend because the place was busy or perhaps I had a server that wasn't fully engaged with her assigned tables. Since the Bacon Omelet and Fresh Baked Toast were amazing, I'll give this place another try and update my review accordingly.

Our first time stopping here on our way up to Duluth and we loved it! The breakfast was delicious and their rolls were great. The ladies at the bakery were extremely friendly, the gift shop was cute and the inside of the restaurant makes you feel like you are in a village. We will gladly we back!

Stopped on our way back from up north. We were seated right away and food came out fast. Everything tasted good and it was a good value. Coffee was a bit watered down it seemed. Only issue I had is for the kids meal they brought a HUGE cup of syrup with no lid on it they just set on top of the pancake then handed it to my 5 year old. So of course he is going to immediately dump the entire cup of syrup all over his pancake, so now it was literally syrup soup with pancake pieces. I assume any parent will appreciate me saying, put a lid on the syrup, or give the syrup to the parent please (especially with little kids).

This was definitely the best muffin I have ever had. I bought a rhubarb muffin, and it was bursting with flavor. I highly recommend getting pastries here. They definitely taste homemade! I have posted a picture of the muffin here. It is also cool that this is a souvenir shop for Minnesota. I saw an "ope" shot glass in the shop. I haven't tried out the restaurant, so I can't speak on that, but it is definitely worth purchasing pastries here.

Google
I've been here once a year for the last three years and the famous rolls aren't as good as they used to be around 10+ years ago, which is a huge bummer. I remember them being so gooey and moist and there would be a pool of caramel in the bottom of the box. No chance of that now. Dry around the edges and a lot less caramel. Ate at the restaurant this time, too. Pancakes and sourdough french toast were good. Philly sandwich and wild rice soup were terrible and overpriced. Hardly any rice in the wild rice soup which is an odd choice to make. It was also really thick...like it kept it's shape like gravy that's started to cool. Meat in the sandwich was really fatty, tough and stringy fatty not tasty fatty, and there were like 8 pieces of diced peppers. No seasoning on the sandwich so it was very bland. Fortunately I had the awful wild rice soup to dip it in, I guess?

Google
The perfect place to stop when traveling between the twin cities and Duluth. I can’t believe I haven’t stopped here before. The bakery items looked fresh and delicious. The bakery items offered a large selection, all of which were my favorites. Grabbed a hot tea from the Caribou located at the back of the store. The restrooms were clean. The staff was friendly. No waiting. Will be back.

Google
Another wonderful visit to Tobie’s for a Cinnamon Roll and Carmel Roll! They were warm and delicious. The coffee was fresh and hot and the service was excellent!!! Took some to go for the neighbors.

Google
We decided to have breakfast for lunch. Eggs were perfectly made, hash browns were crispy for the Number 3. The Northwoods Walleye breakfast was also outstanding! We substituted our toast option for the gigantic cinnamon rolls, what a bargain at $1.50. Megan was a delightful and happy server and really loved her job! Thanks Tobie’s, we’ll be back!!

Yelp
Stop by for Caramel Rolls to go! Skip the outdated restaurant experience. Service was great, I can't complain there. But I'm not sure the restaurant food quality justifies a stop on your way up north. However, the caramel rolls are so good that I think they're slightly better than Cinnabon. Be sure to stop by if you love caramel rolls and are willing to pay $4.50 per roll or $21 for 6 rolls. Don't waste your time with the cinnamon rolls, get the CARAMEL ROLLS ONLY.

Yelp
The restaurant is right off the highway so convenient when traveling. They have a gift shop and many different baked goods. They have a gluten free section that has other companies baked goods. The restaurant server was friendly. The food was very average and kind of bland. The gluten free cheesecake was good and I appreciated that they had gluten free buns.

Yelp
Friendly, attentive staff were efficient at dealing with large and small groups/orders. Recommend the pastries and cookies!

Yelp
Very prompt service. Got our food very quickly. 3 breakfast meals were order. Hardly any wait was shocked to say the least. Everything was good and favorable. Fast service great food out weighs everything thank you so much.

Yelp
Tobies has been a staple when driving up 35 for as long as I can remember. It's had its ups and downs, but this last visit definitely left a sweet taste in our mouths. We visited in the late morning on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. The parking lot was packed, but the entrance at the actual bakery was somewhat calm. We opted for a classic glazed donut and it was fresh & fluffy! I recommend taking a moment to peruse the rest of the shop. They have a plethora of breads, as well as souvenirs and MN-related items. For those with EVs, there's also a spot in the back of the lot (close to the highway) to charge!

Yelp
Driving to Duluth over the weeked, my friend wanted to stop by Tobies. So glad I got to try this place out! I only got the bakery items but the restaurant looked so cute I wish I had time to try it out. The service was truly great!! My friends got a lot of baked goods, so I decided to try the banana muffin. Look at how stacked all the chocolate chips are! They ended up giving it to me for free. It made my day and was so thoughtful and sweet. They even gave my friend some extra goodies too!! Customer service was 10/10 and I wish I got to try more of the baked goods but I know if I am ever up in Duluth again, this is my new go to spot!

Yelp
We had breakfast and had to sit in the bar. There were plenty of tables in the main dining room. Food was like eating at Knick trip. I had the walleye and eggs and the walleye spent way too much time in the fryer. Not good at all
google avatar

Stephanie P.

Yelp
We stopped in for a couple donuts to go. They were delicious. One of the best donuts we've had in a while. We got the Bavarian cream filled donuts and a classic chocolate sprinkle. Donuts were light and fluffy. Chocolate glaze was great. Not sticky, perfectly tempered. Each donut was only $2.50. So glad we stopped.

Yelp
Wonderful food. Great service. Enjoyed breakfast the Two Egg Breakfast here on the way to Duluth. Love!
google avatar

Shannon G.

Yelp
Food was 7/10. Nothing super impressive but expected. Service was quick and to the point but not outstanding. The bakery is where it's at (had the maple and chocolate covered donuts). Would stop again for a quick bite and/or drink because of location.

Yelp
What a north bound getaway Must stop. On our way home from Duluth, I demanded breakfast and we stopped at Tobies. Ordered their omelet and it was gigantic. The egg was thin yet strong enough to hold the overflowing amount of meat and veggies the Denver could have inside of it. Also ordered the pancakes to share and they were the lightest, fluffiest pancake I've ever had in my life. I am STILL thinking about them. Staff was pleasant and let you enjoy your breakfast, coffee was meh (nothing to write home about but just enough to recharge your morning). Tobies is a staple when heading to or from Duluth. Must check out! They also have a bakery and gift shop attached as well.

Robin F.

Yelp
Food was terrible! Hash was like mush. Food was obviously cooked hours ahead (everything). Nothing was cooked as ordered, not even the toast. SKIP this restaurant!!

Michael J.

Yelp
Tried this for the first time. Service was great! The restaurant had a very nice ambiance. Mimosa's were average. Pancakes were huge and really good. Eggs and bacon were what you expect. My fiancé had the Breakfast Poutine. She liked it a lot. Bathrooms were ok. Basic, but clean

Yelp
A fun highway stop. 3.5 stars. We did not have time to sit down in their restaurant so we got sandwiches from the bakery case. Not remarkably good (or bad). I had a ham sandwich and a caramel cinnamon roll. Also ordered coffee which was supposed to be Caribou. McDonald's coffee is better than what I received. Wish I had time to try the other baked goods!
google avatar

Benjamin B.

Yelp
Walleye sandwich was recommended and delicious. Our entire table of five shared one, and I wish that is what I had ordered. Next time. The bakery ordering process was chaotic and disorganized. We ended up buying some tasty treats, but we universally disliked the flavorless blueberry English muffins.
google avatar

Yelp
A must-stop on any trip towards the north shore. The bakery goodies are just something not to miss. Most rave about the cinnamon rolls (which, are good), but don't skip oit on cardamom bread or english muffins. The grab-n-go side always moves quickly, so a stop won't derail your travel plans by more than a few extra minutes. If you're really hungry, stay for a bite in the restaurant.
google avatar

Cale S.

Yelp
While I love Toby's bakery, their ice cream shop fell short. The cookie dough malts were runny and lacked the promised cookie dough flavor, almost like they were missing malt altogether. Disappointing, especially for the price. 1/5

Yelp
I am only going to speak in this review about the bakery since it's been a while since I have dined at Tobys. Toby has been a mainstay for my family and I whenever we are heading to Duluth or the North Shore. The bakery houses the most delicious rolls, bismarks, long johns, and tasty Apple-Cinnamon breads! Always soft and tasty and they certainly don't skimp on the size or fillings. Most places have quietly made things smaller and more expensive, but Tobys has kept their pricing reasonable and the bakery continues to be a nice size and great quality. It can get VERY busy in there but worth the wait!
google avatar

Yelp
Food: 7/10 Service: 5/10 Ambiance: 3/10 Too big for its own good. I was informed that there was poop on the floor in the mens bathroom

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner on the way to Carlton this past September. First time in the restaurant, and it's the second time in the gift shop/ bakery. Place was a little slow for a Friday night. We did have a bit of a wait at the hostess stand. The host was busy doing double duty with clearing dirty tables. Other than that, service was fine. Was greeted by our waittress, order taken, food delivered and tab given in a timely manner. Cheese curds were amazing. Sis ordered the German Reuben sandwich with seasoned fries. She liked it. I ordered the Cubano. I love Cubanos but something was off, wrong. It didn't have a mustard taste, but it was more bbq or sour?? After talking with our waittress, I discovered that the "bistro" sauce has horseradish. Yuck. Nope. I lost my appetite and couldn't finish it. That's a pretty polarizing ingredient that should be fully disclosed in the menu ingredient list and not hidden in a "house sauce". I'll stick to their bakery and gift shop from now on.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped here on our way back from a camping trip up north. She tells me it's a staple destination for people heading north to the lake in the summer. I personally don't get it. The food was below average. I ordered an omelet, and the egg was mediocre and the fillings were not fresh. My wife ordered French Toast, and I would be surprised if it wasn't frozen French toast. Portion size was fine, but food was expensive for the quality received. There's a full service bar, but no cocktail menu. They only provide a tap list upon request. The restaurant feels like the small town local greasy spoon. A few locals were nursing beers watching golf killing time. You won't be out of place if you just finished a hike after camping for a few days... Lastly, the restaurant charges a 3.5% fee to not pay with cash. This should just be built into menu pricing as the cost of doing business.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch at mid-week-- our traditional order of onion rings, a deep fried walleye sandwich and a patty melt coming out of the badly understaffed kitchen promptly, and up to the usual quality. Then it was off to the bakery, to load up on potica, muffins and rolls, and a variety of breads. The bakery never disappoints, and a word of advice: if the shelf is empty, ask someone to check in the back. The odds are good that there is more of what you want in the freezer!

Yelp
Who is hating on Tobies??? Ok full disclosure, I only ever go to their bakery/gas station. I've never been to the restaurant. But their gas station/bakery has always been a fantastic stop while heading up north. They have a caribou built inside the shop, and tons of yummy pastries to choose from. Plus, I always find that their bathrooms are clean and their staff are friendly. I stopped by after a long day of driving and in desperate need of coffee. And Tobie's didn't fail. They had hot Caribou coffee ready to pour, and I got a nice cup of joe. It made the rest of my trip fly by, and I'm very thankful they kept the coffee running despite it being like...8:30pm. Thanks Tobie's.

Yelp
The food here is great the coconut shrimp is good the mashed potatoes are heavenly and the soup is good. (But no coconut.) The service is okay, although they forgot my sides but they got them for me later when I asked about it. It's nice with it's peace and quiet. Although I'm a little worried about the entrance to the backrooms.

Yelp
We passed through Hinckley on the way home from an event and randomly decided to stop in to Tobie's. This place is an absolute treat. We had lunch on the Tavern side which had a great comfy local bar feel. There were pull tabs available too. Our server was so sweet and helpful. I tried the turkey club on cranberry English muffin and WOW- best club I've had! It's all about that cranberry bread. I bought a load to take home so I can recreate this sandwich for my family. The soup was incredibly flavorful, massive depth of flavor. I wish they sold soup to go! In the bakery, you have to try their famous caramel rolls and cinnamon rolls. They were so accommodating when I asked for edge rolls since those are my fave. Reasonable prices. Such a cute shop too in the bakery area. I'll be back!

Yelp
I had to take my son to get a Carmel roll on the way up to Duluth. There was a short wait but well worth it. I got 1 roll Togo and he ate it on the drive up. I thought we would share but nope, I got 1 tiny bite before he devoured it. He have it a 7 out of 10.

Yelp
This place is huge. They have a restaurant, bakery, and gas station which also sells some of the baked goods. I came for breakfast with some friends. It was very quiet which was ok, but we felt a bit loud. Anyway my omelette was tasty and the coffee was good. I heard the fire burger was also really good. Heading out we grabbed some glazed donuts which were fairly large and tasty. I'm a krispie cream or cub donut type of girl, so these were a bit dry in my opinion but still good non the less. We did have a service issue at the restaurant. The waitress mixed up or tickets and I was ended up being charged for myself and one of my friends orders. The manager was pleasant to work with getting it all figured out. I opted to get my money back from my friend rather than put the restaurant out, but they did say they would refund me for the incorrect order if I preferred or knew I wasn't going to be able to get the money back otherwise. Is it the best ever? Maybe not, but honestly it's slim pickings up in this area so I would come back for sure. Just making sure them receipts are straight first.

Ingrid I.

Yelp
Super yummy baked goods and a fun place to stop for a treat! Would totally recommend!

Yelp
Tobie's was the perfect meal to celebrate our trip to Minnesota!!! Our large party was driving down toward the airport and were afraid we might not make it in time, but Cindy was so fabulous in offering to have our order ready in advance. So 5star dining in/out within 30minutes! We had vegetarians, gluten-free, and nut-allergies in our mix of hungry kids and adults and everyone left more than satisfied! The burgers were juicy, the walleye dinner was huge and amazing, the reuben, steak, and walleye sandwiches were on point, and even the breakfast we ordered was great. Amazingly, our entire order was perfect, delivered piping hot, and perfectly on time. Our gluten free member demolished the bean dip and cheesecake, we couldn't help but add on some lovely french onion soup, and we spent a few extra minutes buying bags of cinnamon rolls, cookies, and even bread from the attached bakery to bring back home. Tobey's even has a charming shop with hilarious stickers, unique accessories, all the usual tshirts/sweatshirts, and even an upscale womens boutique section! All the staff from the restaurant, boutique, and bakery were super friendly and helpful. We highly recommend Tobey's for food and service, and hope to come back! thank you so very much for the perfect end to our trip.

Yelp
I used to love Tobies but hadn't visited in years. No wait to get in and I understand why. First, the hashbrowns were awful. They were so crispy that there wasn't any soft potato left. And they were very bland. The T-Bird chicken sandwich was just okay and very bland. Lots of hot sauce helped. My husband has a regular breakfast with eggs and sausage but his hashbrowns were awful too. The only good part was the caramel roll.
google avatar

Rebecca Z.

Yelp
The food was amazing. There options for gluten free. The service was fantastic and nice. The ambiance a nice and cozy . The many different things buy at there various in prices too. You can sit outside
google avatar

Ty M.

Yelp
It is a filling breakfast. Was hoping for diced potatoes in the poutine rather than Taco John style Oles and the coffee was pretty bland. Seemed like an older crowd and decor so maybe it was fitting for that. The host and waitstaff were fine and attentive.
google avatar

Kripa M.

Yelp
A must try when you are in Hinckley. You don't even realize how big this place is until you go in. It's a really cute place with a big restaurant side, a cute little boutique and a bakery. We stopped here for breakfast on the way back to the cities. We got couple of Bloody Mary's, for breakfast I got a Denver Omelette and subbed Caramel roll for toast. My better half got the walleye breakfast with scrambled eggs, hashbrowns and subbed Cinnamon roll for toast. Food was delicious. Caramel and Cinnamon rolls are a must try. Service was great. Our waitress was very friendly. Will for sure stop here again if we are in the area.

Josie E.

Yelp
Once every 4 years I stop to get a cinnamon roll. I asked the cashier for a center piece "please". She said "everyone asks for the center, so then the next person gets the edge piece". Well I was expecting to have the center piece but NO, she decided I was not worthy!! Thanks lady....next time I will open my cinnamon roll before I leave, very disappointed! FYI - I did not eat the exterior edge of the cinnamon roll!!

Yelp
Great stop in Hinckley while traveling 35w between the Twin Cities and Duluth. Appreciate their Tesla superchargers. The bakery has pie, doughnuts, other bakery items and desserts and a full service Caribou coffee. The restaurant is a breakfast all day situation with great biscuits and gravy. Steak sandwich comes smothered in mashed potatoes and gravy. Food quality is what you'd expect from a breakfast diner, service is great. Love stopping here whenever I am in the area.
google avatar

Brad L.

Yelp
I have always heard amazing things about Tobies and their caramel rolls. We stopped on our way back from Duluth and it was worth the stop. We grabbed multiple types of rolls for the next morning and they were so good. Warming them up is the way to go. While we stopped we noticed a bar in the back and learned Tobies is even larger and had so many tvs, pull tabs and huge bar. The only problem I had is that it was mid day on a Sunday and the hostess said we couldn't eat in the bar area. We went back there and there were barely any people in there. We could tell the bartender was swamped, but she was awesome and said it may take some time. She was happy to help and we were happy to wait, but the hostess didn't check. I think they may have an issue with being short-staffed and seems like a waste of really nice space as the bar is way nicer than the restaurant.
google avatar

Lindsey H.

Yelp
Great meal here and you can never go wrong with the baked goods! I definitely recommend eating in the tavern/bar area. Way better vibe than the normal dining room. They were obviously short staffed but they made it work.

Yelp
My friend and I stopped in for breakfast as an end to our mini vacation. Worst breakfast ever, and the service was not much better. There was a bit of a line, which moved very slowly. They weren't busy, so not sure what took them so long to seat everyone, but that should have been a hint. Finally, we were seated and took a while before the server brought water. We were ready to order by the time she came over. I ordered the Corned Beef Hash, which said house made). The hash was not house made unless they make it like the canned stuff but with no flavor. Ordered eggs over medium. They were over hard with no running yolk whatsoever. Asked for crispy hashbrowns, they looked crispy when they came out, but there wasn't much crunch to them. Even the toast didn't taste good. I had a few bites and called it quits. My friend ordered the Cinnamon Swirl French Toast. It looked like they lightly dipped one side in egg and then cooked it. She didn't enjoy it, but did manage to eat 3/4 of it. When the server stopped by the table, she asked if everything was okay. We responded negatively, and she just walked away. She stopped back only to take our plates. With almost all of my meal still on the plate, most servers would typically have asked if I wanted a box (no, I didn't), however, she did not. So she knew we weren't happy with the meal, but again, she didn't ask, acknowledge, or offer to do anything about it. Even when we went to pay the bill, they did not ask how everything was. We had decided not to make a fuss, just pay the bill and know that we would never be eating here again. We were both very sad and disappointed, as this used to be a great spot to stop and eat.

Yelp
This is a classic "we have to go there when we are in the area" place that no doubt hold some great memories for many a folk who have stopped along their trek up nort. The food was ok with many selections from which to choose. The service was ok - seemed a bit understaffed at first, which caused for a long wait to be seated even through there were plenty of seats available. The setting is pleasant. Nothing that will knock your socks off, but then again, that would be gross in an eatery.
google avatar

Andrew P.

Yelp
Stopped by as tradition states on the way to Duluth. Bought 4 goodies to share with the group. Our favorite was the raspberry Bismarck. We got in later, after 2, and they still had a fresh batch of the pecan rolls!
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
This has been a staple in my life for decades. Nice clean bathrooms and probably the best cinnamon rolls ever.
google avatar

Sophea S.

Yelp
Stop by on our way to Duluth for their famous caramel rolls, cinnamon rolls, and doughnuts. They were tasty, but a bit sweet for me. I like their dough though, was fluffy and soft. My favorite would be the Boston cream doughnut. They were so good and not too sweet. Highly recommended if you're around there.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I took the hour long drive to Hinkley today for lunch to meet a friend, and first your wait staff were outstanding with our lunch order and service and then we went to purchase some caramel rolls and cinnamon rolls before we left and your bakery person/cashier Jet was outstanding with us, so friendly, nice, smiling and inviting, we really appreciated her customer service, she made the trip all worth it. Thank you again for everything.

Yelp
Every time we have made to drive up to Duluth, MN, we have stopped at Tobies Restaurant & Bakery. Today, we were a little disappointed. We had decided to have our lunch at Tobies before making our way to Duluth. Our server was great, but as we tried to eat our food, flies kept dive-bombing around us. Not sure what the deal was with so many flies. We were gong to ask for a different table but the place was crowded. After finishing quickly, we decided to buy some pastries for a snack later at our hotel. We stood among other customers waiting to be served. The problem was there was no way to tell who was next in line as there was no organized line. People just stand in front of the cases. Haven't these owners/ managers heard of the number dispensers like supermarkets have for the deli? We were passed by three times until husband stated loudly that we had been waiting. We got our pastries which were tasty, but be forewarned about flies and waiting for service at the bakery.
google avatar

Pam N.

Yelp
Didn't eat here, we stopped for baked goods. Delicious with a capital D! Worth the stop for bread and pastries on the way up to north shore.

Yelp
I haven't been to Tobies in years. Not the least of which because I worked there in 82-84. Working at a restaurant can definitely be buzz kill. Sadly no restaurants are left open in sandstone so off to hinckley to take mom out for her birthday. The coffee shop and old dining room aren't in operation so they have seating in the new dining room and bar. We ended up in the bar which was a little off from our intent, but was ok. We were seated in about 15 mins which wasn't bad for Sunday on Labor Day weekend. They have a full menu. The food was good. I had a half rack of ribs, a tiny salad, and baked potato. The salad was a little weird because lettuce is cheap, so why skimp? The highlight was our server. She was very attentive despite being very busy. She joked about being vertically challenged. She said didn't usually work in that area, but it didn't show. She was wonderful and I'm sorry I didn't catch her name.

Yelp
If you're not just going to pop in for something from the bakery- definitely SKIP this place. Worse food & service ever for breakfast! Server was really uninterested in being good at her job and only came to our table a total of 3 times, to take the order, bring the food & drop off the check. We asked for extra crispy bacon and got squiggly pork strips, eggs were over cooked too. When she came to bring the check she asked what was wrong with the bacon since all our plates left it untouched, I told her it wasn't cooked enough for me and she replied "Really?" and walked off - never even asked to fix it! Bakery is great, but overall the customer service and restaurant aren't worth the stop.

Yelp
What a let down! I was so excited to go back for the cinnamon rolls and Carmel rolls. But they were dry. The store was overwhelming and chaotic. It's a skip for me.

Rosalie Y.

Yelp
We wanted the Chippewa Harvest Bread and decided to take a little trip to Hinckley. We stopped for a late breakfast and my husband had the walleye breakfast and I had the steak and eggs. While the steak was cooked properly- whoever filled their meat order got a bad batch! Mine was full of gristle- like every other bite! The hash browns were good and my husband shared his walleye, but forget the steak!
