Tōka Chef Kitchen - Review - Lower East Side - New York - The Infatuation

"On the Lower East Side, Tōka Chef Kitchen is from the Matsunori team with a few different tasting menu options. One of them costs $46, and comes with some raw fish, but also fried fish and noodles. The spot is BYOB, with no corkage fee. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Will Hartman

AYCE, and the tuna was fantastic, however the salmon was off - either the quality of the fish had a slight odd texture, or was not properly kept (not sure). Service was great. Mushroom garnish on the tuna was fun, but most other pieces were a bit uninspiring.

I went because I saw this place on social media and the ayce/aycd was definitely worth it! They only had two kinds of sake for the aycd part but the yuzu sake was really tasty. The fish was quite fresh and overall not too bad. The only weird part was the fact that there was NO ONE else with us in the restaurant 🤣😭Otherwise, it was great! I'll probably swing by again and hope that there's more people the next time I go lol

I would ABSOLUTELY recommend the omakase that Toka has to offer. All you can eat sushi and drinks for a fixed price… LET’S GO!!! I was full from a meal I had earlier in the day, but it was a great portion of food regardless. The omakase was delicious, the speed of service for the omakase was amazing and the service overall was phenomenal. Kudos to the chef for being able to serve in a timely fashion all our nigiri even though there were different guests that sat down at different times. I would definitely frequent this establishment if I lived in NYC.

Me and my friend went to Toka to celebrate her birthday, and I left incredibly disappointed with our choice. The quality of the fish was inconsistent—some pieces were decent, but others were filled with tendon. The rice was the biggest letdown: mushy, overly vinegary, and it completely overpowered the fish. Even when the Akami was good, the rice ruined the overall experience. The service wasn’t much better. We were greeted by a man who seemed miserable and barely spoke beyond the bare minimum. He wasn’t outright rude, but it didn’t feel welcoming at all. The atmosphere also wasn’t enjoyable. One of the sushi chefs even kept glaring at us for ordering a fair amount of nigiri during the all-you-can-eat portion. To make matters worse, the toro was so chewy that my friend almost choked on it, and instead of concern, the chef seemed more worried about whether we would waste food. After reading other reviews, I realize I should’ve known better-the negative comments aren’t a coincidence. This place really is that bad. And judging from how they respond to criticism, don’t expect constructive feedback from management either. Many reviews mention (and I expect the same) that the restaurant replies with snarky comments. That’s not the best way to do business, in my opinion. For the price point, there are many better options in the city. Honestly, I was embarrassed to bring my friend here for her birthday celebration. Don’t believe the TikTok hype—this place is not worth it.

Absolutely fabulous service. Very attentive and interactive chef and staff. Sake was amazing, and the fish was top tier. Their uni was flown in from Japan, and all the fish was excellent. Bathroom was clean, which is super rare for the area. 10/10 would recommend.

Service is incredible! The staff here are so friendly and helpful I loved the experience. They even gave us roses for Mother’s Day 😌 the staff are incredible and I was sad the food was not the same quality We did the $98 all you can eat/drink. The sake is watered down, but fine. The appetizers were great and so was dessert, but the nigiris were very just okay. We had an additional piece of all the six possible options and salmon and unagi - though not a part of the omakase set - were options. Fatty tuna and wagyu, which are normally huge hits, were pretty lack luster. The fish didn’t taste particularly fresh or flavorful in our opinions.

The food is great and the atmosphere is great. The staff is super friendly, and the fish is sourced from Japan. The fish tastes like you are sitting in Japan and ordering it. I have lived in Japan, and this restaurant is on par with some of the really good local places I've eaten at. The rice is perfectly cooked and seasoned properly. You could tell alot of love, experience, and attention to detail went into each course. Each time the chef puts a new course in front of you, he explains what it is, and each piece of nigiri is, and each piece tastes different and the order allows you to experience the difference in flavors and textures of the fish. The nigiri that came with garnish on top, the garnish was never overpowering the fish, it was instead adding to the whole bites flavor profile. All in all i spent just over 100 dollars with tip, and I will 100% be back again next time I'm in the area.
