"Technique, flavour, fusion and connectivity are the words that come to mind when you walk into this restaurant. Here, Brazilian chef Paulo César works with Oriental techniques and fresh ingredients that induce maximum flavour for the palate. His cuisine is showcased on an à la carte and three tasting menus: Chef’s Experience, Essensu, and Tokkotai. The cocktails here are works of art in their own right!" - Michelin Inspector

This restaurant is interesting because it’s Japanese food from the Portuguese POV. Coming from Thailand, I don’t know whether to judge the restaurant by European standards or Asian standards. Compared to other European Japanese restaurants this one really stands out because of the ingredients and the way that the rice is prepared. I had the lunch menu which has miso, 16 sushi, and a dessert. Still, I have had better at home and those restaurants don’t get to be in the Michelin guide.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5) I went to Tokkoitai for lunch because it was listed on the Michelin Guide Porto, and the booking link offered an Executive Set Menu for €25. That price was actually a great deal — the restaurant’s interior design is beautiful, and all the à la carte dishes were more expensive than the set. However, the food itself wasn’t authentic Japanese at all. I guess the high ratings come from the lack of good Japanese restaurants in the area. If you’ve had real Japanese cuisine before, you’ll probably find this place underwhelming.

One of the best experiences in Porto! Perfect to group of friend, family or romantic dinner. Me and my partner had a chance to visit and be received like a close friends for all staff team. A super friendly and cozy atmosphere, with mixed options between Japanese and Brazilian kitchen.

This is my first ever Michelin Awarded restaurant and im so glad I made it in. I usually have a rule never to try things I've had before in new countries especially Europe but boy I was happy to try this in Porto Portugal Staff was amazing. Accommodated me with no reservation. The Japanese Faire i wont say much other than its Michellen rated, is amazing and the price reasonable. Do your self a favor and if you want good Japan's in Porto this is your place.

Very nice drinks. Extremely fresh and tasty sushi. We had the Matcha Cheesecake & Tofu for dessert—very delicious, fresh, and light. We couldn’t even wait before tasting one of the dishes in the photo!

Delicious! We picked our own dishes from the sushi menu. Notable dishes were the tuna tartar and hand rolls.

We found the place through Michelin guide. The atmosphere and service are all living up to the expectations however I can’t say the same for the food itself. The food are mediocre for the price especially compared to the rest of its peers Porto has to offer.

We ate dinner here on our trip to Porto a few weeks ago. It was the top meal of the trip, no contest. Wine was amazing, and our very friendly server/host was super helpful in helping us make our choices. Everyone here was very friendly and kind. The restaurant is beautiful and I love that they have multiple distinct eating spaces. On to the food… Mushrooms were amazing as others have commented. In raw land, we had: - Flambé tuna: tasty af. - Sashimi: yellowtail is the best I remember having, love the seasoning they put in top, and chu toro was par. - Salmon batera: yum! fun version of a roll kinda (but pressed, not rolled). Next we moved on to the hot stuff… First up was the seafood rice hot dish. Oh my. It was stuffed full of fresh seafood, and every single bite was cooked perfectly. No fishy flavors here or rubbery over-cooked textures, just perfection. The rice with it was amazing as well. So much flavor. I was in the fence about ordering the a5 wagyu, but it was soo worth it. It melted in your mouth and the beefy flavor was out of this world. The rice served with it is this rich stuff that I couldn’t get enough of. It was very different than the rice served with the seafood rice. If I have to give a negative, it’s that the cocktails were very tasty but way too sweet for our tastes, and the music sounded a bit like jazz in the cheesy elevator music style. /shrug Sitting at the sushi bar was really fun as we got to observe the guys making their delicious art, and the banter was fun. Even if we couldn’t understand it haha. We ate at our local Japanese joint recently which made me appreciate just how fresh and flavorful the fish was at Tokkotai. Would no doubt return here in the future! Ps: my quickly snapped pics don’t do the food justice!
