At Toku Unagi & Sushi in WeHo, indulge in expertly crafted unagi boxes and fresh sushi in a cozy spot with a serene vibe, perfect for any occasion.
"Toku Unagi’s elaborate, obsessively crafted boxes of freshwater eel are perfect for celebrating a big night in, even if all you’re commemorating is surviving another day without texting your ex. Available for both pick-up and delivery, LA’s first (and only) eel-specialist is now offering their signature imported Japanese unagi to-go, and for much lower prices - sets now start at $15 (compared to the $53 they used to cost pre-quarantine). But if you’re not really f-eeling like eating unagi, this Weho restaurant also has a large assortment of curries, high-quality sushi, teriyaki plates, and sake by the bottle for sale. Call (310) 854-7285, or place an order through their website and most major apps." - kat hong
"The star of Toku Unagi & Sushi in West Hollywood is the imported Japanese eel. Prepared in myriad ways, the unagi shines whether grilled, broiled and glazed with sweetened soy, or studded in a delicate chawanmushi. Anyone who dines here ought to order one or many of the eel-centered dishes, but not overlook the ankake agedashi tofu. The lightly battered and deep-fried silken tofu and bonito wisps are a familiar sight, but the version here brings in a crisp-tender cast of mushrooms, snap peas, lotus roots, carrots, and thickened dashi sauce. The comforting package makes for an excellent starter before the parade of unagi." - Eater Staff
"While Japan has no shortage of places that specialize in grilled freshwater eel, until Toku Unagi & Sushi’s opening, LA has never had one of its own. And there’s a lot to a-moray about this new Weho restaurant, including fatty toro and firefly squid that’s shipped directly from Japan, and a serene space that overlooks the neighborhood’s streets, but the unagi set is the star here. Served in a lacquered box, the eel is accompanied by a bowl of miso soup, tsukemono (Japanese pickles), and a pot of tea that’s meant to be poured over the entire thing. This is by far one of the best - and most decadent - presentations of unagi in the entire city, however, all of that decadence comes at a price: Namely, a meal that can end up at around $150 per person. The aforementioned unagi sets range from $53-$98, and while the eel is light and fluffy, and the overall experience is completely unique, we’re not so sure it’s worth such a significant portion of your monthly rent." - Kat Hong
