The London Honey Toast Power Rankings - London - The Infatuation

"Tokyo Bagel’s honey toast is sickly sweet. But to be fair to the Waterloo cafe, that’s kind of their whole thing. Somewhere with a wall of fake roses and pink velvet armchairs was always going to serve honey toast doused in powdered sugar. The bottom is soggy, the texture gluey. The good news is that most people are here to wobble capybara-shaped jellies in front of their phones, so they’re ignoring the honey toast anyway." - sinead cranna

At Tokyo Bagel, the sugar crash comes quickly - Review - London - The Infatuation

"Tokyo Bagel is a sugar rush of a Japanese bakery in Waterloo. Eating here feels like being stuffed inside one of the sweet bakes they serve—there are faux rose-covered walls, pink velvet armchairs, and plates of honey toast doused in powdered sugar. But to be fair to this Disney princess of a cafe, that's sort of their whole goal. Phones are propped up on vases to get the best angle of influencers maniacally wobbling capybara-shaped jellies. And the food in general feels like a photogenic prop to hold up in front of those floral walls rather than something to actually enjoy. There are better Japanese bakeries in London, and better places along this stretch to grab some lunch. Food Rundown Honey & Butter Toast Tokyo Bagel’s honey toast is sickly sweet—thanks, in part, to the plate being doused in powdered sugar. The bottom is soggy, the texture gluey. Skip this. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Chicken Katsu Bagel Sando This is a pleasant enough bagel, with some nice chew and a pleasingly sticky, generous amount of sauce. Unfortunately it leans a little too sweet to enjoy the whole thing." - Sinéad Cranna

Note that this is much more Japan-inspired food. Presentation is nice, but food can be quite average. I’d recommend their dessert and drink over the bagel. A bit overhyped on social media but a very decent and comfortable cafe with fun decor, air con this summer, and mid-range cafe pricing. Perfect for small group catchup. If you want a from-Japan-type Japanese cafe though, this isn’t it. Matcha Bliss Latte deserves 4 stars !! The matcha is quite strong, and it’s much more on the creamy side if that is up your alley. Tamago Teriyaki bagel was what was sad for me. It wasn’t tamago, it was just regular fried egg. And it was a bit soggy I guess since it was on the pre prepared end. Teriyaki was decent though. Strawberry Matcha Pastry was also really good! Sweetly balanced and strong matcha bit. Also recommend.

10/10 coffee - smooth and delicious! Amazing selection of pastries, very worthy of its viral reputation The kindest coffee shops owners & team, efficient service. Always warmly welcome here. Cute Japanese aesthetic, if slightly gaudy… Spacious with lots of natural light, very close to Waterloo. Will continue to be a regular!

Went for lunch last weekend with a friend and we both got bagels. I got the last teriyaki chicken tamago one and my friend got the beef pastrami kimchi. Both were very good and hit the spot! The teriyaki option was obviously sweeter (exactly what I wanted!) whilst the pastrami one had a slight kick due to the kimchi and spicy sauce. We then got the oni-croissant which was honestly my favorite. It's worth going here just to try this! The filling is hazelnut and pistachio and is extremely creamy. The tiny strip of nori was sweetened which took us a bit by surprise. Service was a bit slow but to be fair we did go on a Saturday afternoon... I'll definitely go again to try their Asian inspired French toast!

A nice little Japanese theme cafe with creative bagels and dessert. There’s a small selection of innovative bagels fusion with Japanese cuisine. We were trying out different bagels and liked the beef, chicken katsu and tuna and sweetcorn bagel. Tuna and sweetcorn bagel needs more filling, it was just a very thin layer of filling. Chicken teriyaki could do with toning down the sauce which made it salty and over powering. There’s a nice selection of dessert. Matcha layer crepe tasted bit dry and crème lacks freshness. The matcha basque cheesecake is a good attempt, though tasted smooth. The original basque cheesecake is super smooth and just melts in your mouth! The pistachio and caramel donut was quite heavy and very sweet - great combo! A good drinks menu selection. I found the special brews were quite sweet and they never seem to have the Sesame brew, so why keep it in the menu?…. Staff were very nice. There is no toilet in this cafe.

We loved it here 😍 - sat by the window catching up in such a lovely sun spot. We had a beautiful medley of treats to try and even the drinks are pretty! The croissant onigiri had a great pistachio gooey middle and the jelly bunnies are cute AF. The salmon bagel was yum! I was here last Sunday and I would recommend getting here for breakfast/lunch as it was quite busy from 12ish so you don't want to get here and bits you want have run out! Definitely visiting again :)

Tokyo Bagel is not very "Tokyo", rather a run-of-the-mill chain. There is not a lot to recommend, the stuff is polite and the ambience tolerable is you like the sort of over-the-top decor. There is a very limited choice of vegan food but the available cake surprisingly decent. The promise of fix price for cake and coffee were not kept and the cappuccino miserable (and we were charged extra for milk substitute). Expensive and not recommended, especially if one is vegetarian/vegan. One can do better.

Adore Tokyo Bagel! The wobbly jelly and OTT decor took me back to trips to Japan. The matcha Basque cheesecake was just right and not too sweet. It was like green tea icecream without worrying about it melting lol. The coconut jelly was nice. The cookie was good, though I find them generally a tad sweet. We timed it so it wouldn't be too busy and could get a table without feeling rushed to leave. The staff were great. I was tempted to try the salt beef bagel, but had lunch at home. I wish they made matcha plain bagels, would have been thrilled to take some home. No toilets, but the pub across the road is super cool and worth checking out. Definitely one I'd like to go again, and also to Tokyo Bagel, which was a nice treat. Loved visiting the vaults nearby and even did an IG reel this morning. All in all, a great area and soooo glad I finally got to visit Tokyo Bakery.

We visited a couple of weeks ago and, thankfully, it wasn't too busy. We got the corn dog, salmon/ avocado bagel, and 2 croissants. The bagel was pretty good (4 out of 5 stars) but the corn dog was very dry so we couldn't eat it. The croissants although appealing were dry and without much filling. The customer service was mediocre - the person who served us the food wore dirty clothes although he was polite. We won't be visiting again as we weren't happy with the quality of the food, and customer service.
