An Ode to the Mexican Mall Candy Store | Eater

"A bustling Toluca mercado stall that stopped the author in his tracks with a gleaming pyramid of dark green, meaty calabaza en tacha dripping with syrup; it epitomizes the chuchería experience with chrome racks overflowing with Lucas lollipops, Pelón Pelo Rico push-up candies, deli containers of caramel, Paleta Payaso chocolate-covered marshmallow pops, Duvalín pudding, and a parade of sour candies, spicy chips, and ruby-red chamoy bottles — a sensory, nostalgic gateway to regional Mexican sweets that reclaimed childhood memories in a single sugary bite." - Bill Esparza

Small, hyperlocal, and easygoing—set in the Wells Fargo lot on Sundays. The Los Angeles Times’ market directory notes its long-running hours; expect a tight lineup of produce and neighborhood vendors.

Every Sunday behind the Well Fargo Bank on Riverside Dr. Fresh fruits and vegetables and the world most amazing Tamales.

Daniella W

Google
Very small, maybe 10 stands max and only one is produce, another one have these homemade spreads, tamales stand, and then some jewelry stand and other artisanal goods, mostly nothing essential. I guess it’s cute if you’re already around or live nearby, but for me there’s no reason to come by again. I did expect more and thought it would be bigger. But plenty other farmers markets in town.

Kendra Vander Vliet

Google
This is more of a hipster get together than an actual farmers market. There's hardly any vendors and the few that are there sell their produce at ridiculous prices. The vendor food is also highly inflated in price. I would recommend people skip this farmers market and head towards the downtown Burbank one, instead if you want better prices, and more choices (including fresh truffles for a good price!)

Google
Toluca Lake Farmer's Market is a hidden gem. It seems to grow just a little bit every week. Today, I had to pick between seven different kinds of fantastic tamales. The baked goods at this market are absolutely stellar! (And, soon to be sold in Whole Foods Nationwide.)

Google
This is a small market mostly comprised of really cool artist. There is a guy selling Russian Witchcraft and other hoodoo related things. I passed. However, there is one guy there selling farm fresh produce. There is a guy selling nice oils, shea butter, sea salt scrubs and lotions. My favorite is a woman who sells these really cool, colorful and artsy ties, wraps, sarongs, etc.

Google
Umm, this farmers market has gone from a very humble single table of veggies to resembling the classic LA farmers market vibe: some live music, several vendors including florists and a knife sharpener. It's still a very small market, but it has developed beautifully since Covid began changing our lives. Highly recommended if you're in Toluca.

Google
Great little farmers market tucked behind the main thoroughfare of Riverside Drive. Depending on season, selection can vary, but there are always plenty of options ranging from fruits and veggies to hand made goods.

Garrett McCord

Google
Bought some huge fresh eggs, free range. Some fruits and veggies. Delicious food from the food truck. Not huge but like to support.

Yelp
Gotta give 5 stars because of they have great tasting Organic fruit and vegetables and locally sourced. Another reason for the 5 stars is because everyone we interacted with, had super great attitudes. There weren't a whole lot of vendors, so there is plenty of room for more cool booths. I especially liked the bell you ring to flush your ego down the toilet. My wife and I had a good time here and is walking distance from shopping and eating just around the corner. We picked up some cool items like a copper bird feeder, and random records, fruit, even a new puppy bed for the dogs we are selling. There is plenty of free street parking. We will def be back and will recommend to family, friends and fellow Yelpers!

Yelp
Toluca Lake farmers market is growing! Yay!! What started as just a fruit and veggie stand has grown into a cool little farmers market. It's behind the Wells Fargo on Formans and Riverside Drive, every Sunday morning. They have great produce, eggs, wild caught fish, fresh baked breads and pastries, nuts and honey, European yogurts, mediterranean salads and cheese, fresh chips, salsas/guacamoles and the tamales, YUM! They have live plants, soy/coconut candles and a few misc booths, including massage, which I would highly recommend, OMG, so good! It's an awesome little farmers market-the vendors are really nice, prices same as other local farmers markets but the best thing is, it's not crowded, so no fighting for parking or long lines for the amazing yogurt! Best kept secret in Toluca Lake.

Yelp
Very petite farmers market off riverside drive where Compass RE is. Not a lot of food booths but everyone is friendly! I can walk here from the hotel and it's a great hang on Sundays from 9 or 20 am-2:30 pm

Yelp
Best place to enjoy sunday morning with family. I'm regular at this farmer's market. They have amazing food and produce ! They have a stand for kids' stuff, too. They support local farmers and restaurants in the community, too. One of the places there to try is the temale stand and cool PlanEat.

Yelp
I love the Toluca Lake Farmer's Market. The vendors there are great. I love the tamale stand I love that they have a nice variety of vendors.

Mike K.

Yelp
Love the Toluca Lake Farmer's Market, but it's been closed for a couple weeks due to a permit issue. Seems ridiculous to me that something that's good for the community couldn't be expedited.

Yelp
I love coming to the Toluca Lake Farmer's Market because everyone is so friendly and welcoming. They have so many varieties there which is awesome. The tamales and the press juice are delicious there . I try to go every Sunday just for those lol.

Yelp
My friends and I absolutely LOVE the Toluca Lake Farmers Market! We go almost every Sunday!! Super safe, clean, masks on and socially distant with an entrance only and exit only walkway through the market! Everyone is very upbeat and welcoming it's so good to be outdoors in the fresh air supporting our community! Love you TLFM!

Sunny S.

Yelp
I'm new to the area and am unsure why this market has a low rating ( even though the reviews are years old ) THIS MARKET IS LOVELY! Located right off of Riverside it has amazing parking and quite a few new vendors that are amazing. I do wish it had a few more produce vendors. Everyone is super safe following Covid guidelines, they have live music, fresh flowers / goodies at a bakery booth, vintage clothing , homemade soaps and more! If you live close by like I do there are a ton of great brunch spots within walking distance. Check it out! Every Sunday 930-230 rain or shine

Yelp
Not much to say about this farmer's market. In fact, I've already typed more words than there were vendors! Honestly. I want to say something nice, because the vendors were nice, and you want them to make money. But you just get the sense that they should drive over to Montrose or Beverly Hills. Like, maybe they don't know that there are larger markets, with actual people. I mean, for a while, the four of us in my group were literally they ONLY people at the market. I did not see most of the stands that are mentioned in the other reviews. There was a Tamales stand. And maybe a soap vendor. But otherwise, two fruit and veggie stands and I think maybe a flower vendor. Maybe gourds too. But that was it. If you have not, try Montrose. Great market.

Priscilla O.

Yelp
Such a great little farmers market. Great location, great vendors. I look forward to coming every Sunday.

Yelp
Great little market for locals. They are working on more vendors, but it needs community support to grow. Fantastic new place added - Petit Suisse - they have amazing baked goods - muffins (Macha, Lemon, Chocolate, Choc/Banana/Walnut), bread, croissants (savory and sweet) and baguettes, as well as ready to heat savory items like quiche and lasagna. Some of the stuff is gluten-free but all healthy and organic. This place alone would keep me coming back!!!

Yelp
We'd seen signs for the Farmer's Market while eating along Riverside. After a walk around Lake Hollywood this morning, we decided to check it out. On this particular Sunday morning there were less than ten booths. But we still walked away with four bags worth of tasty treats! All the booths had great stuff. Its located in the same lot as the Wells Fargo and is between Sancola and Forman. You can park behind the Wells Fargo. If you live in the area, but typically hit the Burbank and Atwater markets, give Toluca Lake a try! Its open 9:30-2:30pm, Sundays

Yelp
Ok selection, but not my first choice. I live about equal distance from the Toluca Lake Farmers Market and the Studio City Farmers Market. Both are on Sunday mornings and next to Trader Joe's. I pretty much always decide on the Studio City Market instead of Toluca Lake. There are not many booths here and as a result there aren't many options. I don't recall the prices being much better than a grocery store. The parking didn't seem too bad (Studio City can be difficult) as there are a couple of lots and street parking nearby. This market is also open a bit longer than the Studio City market, so if you don't leave the house before noon, this might be the better choice. Otherwise, I'd go to Studio City instead.
google avatar

Marianna K.

Yelp
Definitely needs more vendors. It is a lot closer and more convenient then Studio City Farmer's market, and it is open until 2:30pm I stopped by at 1:45pm and there were 5 vendors left - vegetables, fruit, berries, jewelry and flowers... sad... May be, my fault, should come earlier...

Paul M.

Yelp
I applied for a booth at this farmer's market for my small business with an application fee of $10, and it's as if I sent my money into the void. Absolutely not contact or follow up regarding my application. I will never be shopping there or doing business with them in the future. Still crossing my fingers for a refund.
google avatar

Christine K.

Yelp
I wish more vendors would join this market, since it's closer to me than the Studio City one. There was a nice bath product stall, but it's no longer there (but they are on Etsy.com under seller SprezzaturaBBC). Here's what remains, that I do like: - Chox Chocolates - they have awesome espresso chocolates - Flowers - $3 bouquets! - Tamales - huge and delicious It's near Trader Joe's, so I find it convenient to stop by after doing groceries. There are also fruits and nuts, but I have not tried them. Bring CASH!

Yelp
I thought these other reviews were just being overly harsh..until I went there. Ughh SO disappointing. I went for groceries and there was literally two stands with produce. Very VERY limited selection. There were about 5 other stands there but they ask appeared to be cliquey women who know how to knit or paint glad or string beds together...and so they opened a stand to sell these goods. Very frustrating when you need to get groceries and all you see is tea cozies. I'll be sticking to the Burbank farmer's market from now on
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Sad. We arrive at 11 to find one produce vendor, one stand selling salsas and some Mexican food items along with a couple of vendors selling tchotchkes... there were about 4 tents that were completely empty. How disappointing that there isn't a more lively scene here. We will just need to drive into the city to get a decent farmers market experience....

Barbi G.

Yelp
Funny people and great assortment of vendors. Fresh jams, baked goods, amazing chocolates, clothes, cool jewelry, essential oils, and all sorts of other awesome stuff. I stop by for tamales and emd up looking at the other stuff and chatting with the fun and interesting vendors. Next thing i know I'm leaving with an armful of bags!!!

Yelp
Was very let down with this Farmer's Market. The dude selling tomatoes had a red tarp over his product, which made them all seem very red and good. Upon exiting, the tomatoes weren't that red at all. Didn't find what I was looking for at all. I like the Studio City farmer's market more.

Yelp
I love this market. Yes, its small, but its growing, and I totally support that. I love how I can go get brunch at Mo's and then saunter down Riverside drive on a gorgeous day, stop in at Coffee Bean for a big fat ice blended mocha, check in at Pergolina, which always has such cool stuff, and end up at the farmer's market for produce. I think that the Toluca Lake Chamber of Commerce and other businesses should get behind this market- a neighborhood is only as good as its farmer's market, and you can see this one is struggling. I love to support local farmers, and farmer's markets that are trying so hard to simply exist, much less thrive. The other great thing- unlike Studio City's farmer's market, there is plenty of parking !!

Yelp
FARMERS MARKETS, TO BE TREASURED! Farmers Markets are what YOU make them, and this lovely market is no exception! POLEAZE stop complaining about the lack of vendors at your chosen Farmers Market. Local Artisans, Vendors and Farmers are struggling to bring YOU their BEST so support them, make constructive comments, perhaps become a vendor, ask to be part of the vendor selection committee and ask that NPO's be given a booth to share their mission statement with this great audience, help grow the Farmers Market you frequent! A neighborhood Farmers Market is a great way to: Create community Create awareness of local NPOS Create a sense of belonging ( because Farmers Markets are "EdFoodieSpaces" where people who are food lovers can educate and learn from other people who are food lovers about the value of eating fresh locally grown and produced edibles)! Additionally a neighborhood Farmers Market is an opportunity to bring optimism to a community which maybe in transition or needs a outlook face lift! Recall the saying: "Food, I may not have much but you can share with me all that I have". If your Farmers Market does not have a suggestion box displayed - make this your first suggestion to the organizers of the market, be constructive and support the vendors who are there. Farmers Markets are a gift, a community effort and a way to teach the NexGen about the bounty and beauty of locally grown and produced food and crafts! A sincere smile while perusing your options, says a lot about your shopping experience, share one with a Farmers Market vendor it goes a long way:)

Yelp
I've only seen about five vendors, which means there's not a lot of variety. I went one Sunday only to leave disappointed and head over to Trader Joes for some real produce.
google avatar

Mighty L.

Yelp
Me Gusta Tamales!!! If you love tamales, these are the best in town. They make them fresh on the daily. Get it with Green Salsa.
google avatar

Jazz L.

Yelp
Unfortunately there were like 2 fruit and vegetable vendors. Not much variety, hopefully they will grow into a larger market. The location is desireable for all people living in Toluca Lake.

beverlee n.

Yelp
NoHo Farmer's Market, west of Lankershim, and Burbank Farmer's Market are larger, but Toluca Lake Market fine if you get there early. Sadly they are having a tough time attracting vendors.

Treasa M.

Yelp
Burbank Farmer's market is far better. I've hit this one up a couple of times when I couldn't get to the Burbank one on Saturday. Pros? Check out the Olive Oil lady - sustainable California Olive Oil that is super yummy. Also some pretty friendly vendors. Cons? Not much selection and the produce is less expensive at the Burbank one. Too many crafts, not enough food. I operate on the SLO program and it makes for some boring meals when you don't have too many options and don't meet your budget. Sigh. I was hoping this one would be better!

Yelp
Waste of time - quarter of a block long - only about 5 vendors altogether! Nasty tasting strawberries that tasted like they had just been sprayed with spider spray! Yuck! Their produce was withered and wilted - if I had it in my fridge, it would have been thrown out a week ago! There were also overpriced half-dead flowers - total waste of our time!

Christy C.

Yelp
This farmer's market is on the upswing with new owners and new vendors. Plus, it is a place to get fresh produce/flowers from local farmers and it is a community builder for Toluca Lake. I arrived with my kids and parked right next to it, no hassles at all! And they had face painting and a balloon vendor that kept my kids happy while I browsed the vegetables. A wide array of booths, from art to kid's clothes to the most fantastic tamales. It is a must-see on a Sunday.
