There are some amazing restaurants in Santa Fé. Granted, it isn't what it was in the 90s, but then, what is?
When I've left Santa Fé to live elsewhere, I miss green chile. And Colorado can say all it wants, even their "Hatch" labeled green chile doesn't match up. I'm not boasting, it's just the truth. I purchased a bag of "super hot Hatch green chile" peppers this weekend, and guess what? Not a blip. Very mild.
I get it, you have to appeal to the popular palate, but then don't label it "Super Hot Hatch." Please.
Now, having said that, there is nothing as good as a Tomasitas smothered chile relleno, unless it's homemade. And even then.
I was so happy to (a) sit in the bar with a good friend again on a busy Friday night and (b) find that the plate is exactly the same as it was in the 90s.
The texture of the breading is always just right, the amount of rice and beans, the slathering of green, and of course, the sopapilla with honey butter. MMM! There's very little wrong with me that can't be cured by that.
Very little indeed.
It was so good to be back. The service was of course, as good as it ever was, and it still has a friendly, family-run feel. Yes, it's packed with touristas, but when the food's this good, you really don't care.
Yes, there are other restaurants that are authentic, with hotter Chile, perhaps even better margaritas (although I didn't partake this time, the bartenders at Tomasitas have never disappointed), but really, I think this old school restaurant stacks-up just fine.
Thank you, Tomasitas, for yet another great meal in a long history of dining with you!
