Where to Eat Sopapillas in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Across New Mexico | Eater

"A family-owned institution for around 40 years, this spot is known for well-crafted northern New Mexican dishes and consistently includes sopaipillas with every meal. The menu highlights a stuffed sopaipilla as a standout starter item that diners are encouraged to try, reflecting the restaurant’s emphasis on traditional, hearty preparations that showcase chile, cheese, and savory fillings." - Asonta Benetti

This is a must to stop at.the service was friendly and fast once we got our server. This place definitely gets busy. Warning plan accordingly, it gets packed! First time I tried the chicken soup and wow very impressed. I've come here for years and decided to try it. Overall, the food is delicious. The cleanest of restaurant has gone downhill over the years. It looks run down and looks like they don't clean it very well. Reason for the 4stars.

Amazing! We waited for awhile but it was totally worth it since the food was so fresh and the drink was amazing. The service was also nice and we enjoyed all the food! We chose to sit outside and it seemed nicer than inside.

This restaurant is a hidden gem that gets quite crowded, but we were fortunate enough to find a table. The friendly and attentive staff took their time to explain the menu, ensuring that everyone, including vegetarians, found options that suited their preferences. The red and green sauces were particularly impressive, though they may be a bit spicy for those not accustomed to spicy food. The chili relleno was another standout dish, and the beans were cooked to perfection. As a bonus, they serve soppapias as part of the table meal, which were delicious. I also noticed that they go above and beyond for birthday celebrations, inviting the entire restaurant to join in the singing. If you ever find yourself in the area, I highly recommend visiting this place.

Google
The food was good. The salsa is hot. The comp sopapilla and honey was perfect. Enchiladas plate is a lot of food. They are huge. Margaritas are good. The swirl ✅. Hint: go to Google and get on the wait list. They don’t do reservations and this will easily save you 20 min wait and possibly an hour. This place gets packed. Just check your phone for the text saying your table is ready vs the host.

There is a reason Randy Travis liked Tomasita’s; great atmosphere with great food and service. Very busy at lunch and expected to wait but a party of two we were seated quickly. The home made tamales smothered in red sauce and cheese were excellent. The corn enchiladas with green chili was also delicious and to cool that little burn we enjoyed the sopapillas with raw honey. Esther was our server and checked on us regularly and smiled like the rest of the staff! So good, thanks for a wonderful dining experience.

When we are in Santa Fe, this restaurant is a must do. The atmosphere, food, and service are incredible. We arrived shortly after they opened and were seated right away. Alma took care of us and did a great job. My wife and I both ordered the Tuesday Atrisco Plate. What a treat. The chili rellino was to die for. The best that we have ever had. The enchilada was packed full of chicken, and the tortilla it was wrapped in was delicious. The taco was excellent. The meal also included beans and rice. All of this plus a sopaipilla, which is excellent with honey, which they keep on the table. Everything was incredible at a very reasonable price. This place has been in business since the early 70s, and they definitely know what they are doing. One note is that this restaurant is very busy and the wait time can be long. Follow up: It was so good we returned two days later. My wife ordered the beef quesadilla, and I ordered the Relleno Plate. Both were the best we have ever had. Pictures are below.

Reasonable prices and decent SW cuisine, busy place and they turn tables quickly. Not our favorite southwest meal but decent. Worth a try.

Google
A good size menu, with a lot of options and a full bar. Food was plenty and well priced. Atmosphere was casual yet stylish. Service was friendly, kind and attentive. I wish I was in town longer to taste everything on the menu. Parking was easy and the place did feel cramped.

Yelp
The only real issue we had was Jesus, the manager on staff. He was horrible. The food overall was good. The sopapillas were amazing. The swirl margarita was very good. The wait staff was super nice and gave great service. The ambiance was also nice. The manager was extremely rude. It was a strange experience that would keep us from returning. The manager was aggressive with a smile. It was bizarre. I got the impression that his issue was with tourists. I love visiting long standing family owned restaurants... this is a lesson on being careful who you put as the face to your restaurant. I hate that for the family who owns this place.

Yelp
We come to Santa Fe once a year - the food and service never disappoint! The property always is in tip top shape !

Yelp
We had the works appetizer and a Christmas smothered ground beef burrito. $28. This might be our new favorite restaurant. The works appetizer had the best guacamole and best queso we have had. The chips are a little hard but I think they make their own so your experience may vary. The burrito was probably the best we've had. It was just a little better than the New Mexico beef jerky company in albuquerque and the salsas were both nice and hot! Can't wait to go back for more!

Yelp
Very popular restaurant--I had to wait a few minutes for a table at 2pm, perhaps because I wasn't the only one to come straight from the train. That said, I found the food underwhelming. While it came out fast, neither red nor green chile really stood out, and the chile rellenos were a bit soggy. Sopapilla was pleasantly warm and crunchy, though.

Yelp
We two had lunch, and would go back. FOOD: 4.0. We chose dishes from the "light lunch" choices, and it was plenty. - Mexican Plate: 4.0. Had the chicken option. Filling and varied. - Quesadilla: 3.5. Had chicken. Filling with a lot of chicken. - Sopaipilla with butter honey: 5.0. Comes with each of the preceding dishes. Warm and delicious. SERVICE: 4.5. Prompt, friendly, and accomodating. AMBIANCE: 4.0. Lots of diners; there was a line.

Yelp
I go here every time I am in NM. Good consistent quality, friendly people. I love everything I have had here. Christmas sauce on burrito. Mmmmm. But the sopapilla are the best!!! I know they are simple, but they do a great job with them! Wish I had some right now! Definitely a go to place for casual sw...

Yelp
We went on a Monday for an early lunch. There was a short line but we were seated quickly. We were greeted promptly by our server even though she was busy. We ordered a variety of items, nachos, Chile relleno, combo burrito, and I got the grilled veggies enchiladas. The grilled veggies were a mix of onion, zucchini, peppers, and mushrooms. They were cooked but still had a little crunch to them, which is perfect IMO. I got Christmas and both sauces were delicious. I saw the sign warning that their sauce was spicy. I would have liked a little more heat but it was sufficient. The rice and beans were just OK. The sopapilla was light and airy. I would definitely return.

Yelp
The last time we were in Santa Fe was in 2014. That summer we lived in the rail yard and Tomasita's was the first restaurant we visited. We were blown away and it became a local favorite. A decade later, we found ourselves in Santa Fe and there was no debate for dinner: we had to return to Tomasita's! Spoiler: our experience was just as fantastic 10 years later as it was in 2014! The moment we walked in the door the waitstaff greeted us with a warm and inviting welcome. The ambiance transported us into the authentic New Mexican style dining experience. The decor, architecture, music, and vibe brought everything together into a holistic dinning experience. We started with the chips and salsa (oh my gosh YUM!) and they were bursting with flavor. I could have grazed all day. We both got the house margarita and absolutely loved it. The margs were a perfect pairing with our dinner. We came hungry...so I got the carne adovada burrito (Christmas style: green and red chile) and my husband got the super combination plate. It was so so SO delicious that we gorged ourselves and ate every last bite of these giant portion meals. We regret nothing...it was SO good! For "dessert" we made sure to have room for our sopapillas with butter and honey. Warm soft hallow bread filled with dripping butter and oozing honey...need I say more. ALWAYS a tastebud delight. Clean facilities, reasonable prices, and a fabulous dinning experience. All this to say, Tomasita's was just as fabulous in 2024 as it was in 2014. Thank you! We look forward to our next visit...hopefully not as long as a decade!

Yelp
A friend recommended Tomasita's so we had to give it a try. They serve large portions of OK New Mexican food--not great, but not bad. My wife and I both ordered the Tuesday Atrisco Plate--a relleno, a blue corn chicken enchilada, and a beef taco--tasty, but nothing special. The staff was friendly and efficient.

Yelp
I was second in line checking into our Santa Fe motel. The desk clerk recommended Tomasita's to the gentleman in front of us. So glad I overheard the reaction! Great huevos rancheros for Mums, and the best flautas I've ever had! Couple that with great service from Rodrigo and an incredibly attentive manager, and it was a great night for New Mexican food in Santa Fe! A must stop for anyone visiting the city!!

Yelp
Drove from California to Texas for the total solar eclipse and had plenty of Mexican and Tex-Mex because of the limited options along the drive and this place receives well-deserved 5 stars! From the outside the building looked like the restaurant was closed but inside it was bustling with yellow glass windows that created an interesting cozy ambiance. Carpet as flooring in a restaurant stood out to me. Got seated quickly, looks like there's a lot of tables and booths available to accommodate crowds. Ordered the Chile Rellenos with BOTH red and green sauce and I definitely preferred the green sauce for the fresh chunkiness but the red was good in its own way. For the chiles rellenos I think the green chili sauce goes better. Waiter had also recommended the green but I was curious to try both. The menu says they use chiles and are stuffed with cheese. The chilis were the most fresh and thick chilies I've had in this dish and were SO GOOD! The beans had a lot of flavor compared to other Mexican restaurants I've been going to. Sopaipillas - first time having these and I added their butter and some honey per other reviews here and these were AMAZING. They came complimentary and are these plain fried dough things that reminded me of a less sweet and greasy funnel cake or doughy bread. Very good and I wish I lived closer to enjoy these more often. Restrooms are right near the entrance.

Yelp
Shopping center parking lot. Had to park behind the restaurant. Waited for 10 minutes to be seated. Food was seriously delicious! We loved the sopaipillas and honey butter! I did not care for the rice but everything else was heaven. The chips and salsa alone could've filled us up. I ordered the Tuesday plate (yes you can order it any day of the week). The taco and enchilada was loaded with protein. The chile relleno was super cheesy. Ambiance is dressy casual with lots of families. Service was great too!

Yelp
Took the train from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. This resto is so close to the train depot so we tried it out. I ordered chile relleno, mushroom cap and sopaipillas and to be honest, to me it was just average food. The resto however is big and our server was attentive.

Yelp
They warn you at the door that this food is spicy. You'll see a sign warning you that they are not legally responsible for what happens to you when you eat it! But I still wasn't prepared for just how spicy it would be. The only thing I didn't struggle to eat were the sopapillas! Lol. But the tamale plate was still good. If you're a big chile fan, this is your place! Ambience was festive! Incredible value for the food- it was one of the cheapest meals we had in Santa Fe and portions were generous.

Yelp
What a great place! Super busy but the wait was quite quick. Service was 5 stars! Folks there are super nice. Food: we started with the chips and guacamole. There is enough for 4 people but just the 2 of us. Chips were good. Guacamole was ok. It was a bit spicy but that's our wimpy taste buds not theirs. We shared an order of 3 tacos. 2 chicken and 1 beef. Hubby said the beef was delicious! Unfortunately, the chicken taco was dry and not so great. They also serve this heavenly bread - sopapadias- please excuse the spelling. Omg- these are amazing! Hubby had a margarita which was ok. Great value - with tip it was under 50! Overall, we would go back. I would like to try other things.

Yelp
this place is popping! they do not take reservations so be prepared to wait. we came about 15 minutes after they opened and put our name in, they said it would be about 30 minutes and would text me when the table was ready. thankfully the bar is right next to the host stand so I got a mango frozen margarita while waiting. it was delicious and refreshing. the table was ready almost exactly 30 minutes later. this is a huge restaurant, it was crazy to see how big it was and how long the waits were! once we were seated, the server came very quickly and took our order. my mom and I each ordered a cup of tortilla soup, and an order of the chicken flautas to share. they brought the soup and the flautas at the same time, it would have been nice of have the flautas first but that may have been on us for not asking. after they brought the food, I asked for a share plates but they didn't bring one. not the end of the world, we ended up using the plates the soup came on to eat which was not ideal but it worked. the flautas were tasty but felt a little oily for my taste. all of the mains come with sopipillas which are kind of like fry bread and are served with honey butter, and there's extra honey on the table as well. that was my dessert and it was really delicious, get more if you want!

Yelp
Coming from California, our usual stop visiting Santa Fe is visiting Tomasita's. The meal is always consistent and the sopapillas are always a MUST. Our table of eight arrived around 3 pm and waited around 30 minutes. There was someone selling beautiful Native American jewelry so we passed time but checking out some souvenirs. We were seated in the Randy Travis room and our server was attentive. Overall great experience even though they were busy.

Yelp
If I was forced to choose one last meal, Santa Fe's Tomasita's could easily make the short list! This place is deservingly popular. The stuffed sopaipilla (I get the ground beef and bean combo) with red and green chile (Christmas) was pure heaven! Bring your appetite because it is a sizable entree- a good value for $14.50 on the lunch menu. I think the flavor of the chile is among the best in NM- the red was especially tasty. I also enjoyed the queso chile fries appetizer- delicious! For drinks, their special seasonal grinch margarita and a swirl margarita were both excellent and potent. Lastly, the complimentary dessert sopaipilla served with honey butter and honey was the final chef's kiss to an amazing meal! I arrived early for lunch, at its opening time and there was a line of people stretching out the door when I left. We were promptly seated and well attended to by our server. The rustic southwestern atmosphere capitalizes the authenticity of this New Mexican staple. Tomasita's is right next to the train depot so there's easy access to the rail runner. It's also near the plaza so you have the ability to walk off your food coma afterwards while exploring Santa Fe!

Yelp
Solid food and taste. Great portion sizes. The vibe is very noise and usually crowded. Wait times can be up to an hour. So go early or late. Honey Butter is amazing and the best. Definitely worth the food

Yelp
We loved Tomasita's so much that our group went here twice on a recent weekend trip to Santa Fe. Our friend and host, a Santa Fe resident, ranks Tomasita's as his favorite local restaurant. Free chips and salsa with Yelp check-in (we upgraded to add guacamole). On my first visit I had a single tamale plate "Christmas style" (red and green chile), which came with pinto beans and pozole (really, just the hominy). Second visit I had the chile Christmas style. Huge portions, and all entrees come with addictive sopaipillas. I topped them with butter and honey and was in heaven! Such bold flavors all around, truly wonderful meals. Great service, comfortable atmosphere, and plenty of southwestern charm. I can't wait for a return visit!

Yelp
Came on a busy weeknight! Bartender deserves 5 stars he made sure everyone was taken care of, and the service still felt punctual and personal. The portions here are large! Feel free to disagree, but I get that the appeal of this place might be that they have something for everybody with their extensive menu, can fit large parties, and have large portions. The taste however was lackluster and a miss for me unfortunately. Nothing terrible, but also nothing to write home about. Would recommend trying something else in the area.

Yelp
Wow! Yelp did me right with this one! What a great place in Santa Fe! If you are looking for some good New Mexican food then this is a great choice. It is located by the Railyard area in downtown. Right beside the train station. It has a ton of parking available. The service I received was top notch. With great recommendations and service. It was a busy place on a Sunday. The food was amazing! I got the Tuesday Atrisco plate. With red and green chili sauces. Everything was so yummy! I left full and very happy. Very worth the reasonable cost also. Great place to come to if in Santa Fe! I will hopefully be back to bring my wife here soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent new Mexican food! Large servings and fresh food-added plus-meal was served with sopapillas! I actually heard someone mention it on the train (from Albuquerque to Santa Fe ) mention that they were going there so why did you add it down the name has a possible lunch option. I couldn't believe it was right next to the train station. We spent time going to a number of the local museums and botanical garden, then came back to Tomasita's for a late lunch-was definitely great selection. It's on my list to go back.
google avatar

Yelp
Old Santa Fe classic restaurant- great margaritas and many New Mexican options. Sopapillas are a Yummy way to soak up the meal, or add the special honey butter for a treat.

Yelp
OVERALL When in Santa Fe and in the mood for New Mexican cuisine, I suggest Tomasita's for a casual-to-dressy lunch or dinner. RATING BREAKDOWN Food: 4 | Service: 4 | Ambiance: 4 | Price: 4 PARKING There is ample free parking with marked signage around back with view of the New Mexico Rail Runner Express train depot. LOCATION/AMBIANCE This had been stopping grounds for my family when I was growing up. There is a nice bar area that I never noticed before. Lol. Mostly there is indoor seating but I highly recommend the patio if it's pleasant enough outside. You'll enjoy the adobe-style building that's required in Santa Fe along with red Chile ristras adorning nearly every corner. THE GRUB I started with a Coyote Sunset cocktail ($9.50) which was an excellent choice. It entailed "perfectly sweet cocktail on the rocks with cranberry orange syrup and Santa Fe Spirits Silver Coyote white whisky." For lunch I wanted a lighter plate. The relleno bueno plate ($10.95) had a wonderfully-cooked relleno with batter that was in the thicker side, yet, not too overbearing. It was delivered hot with ginormous servings of posole and pinto beans on either side of the relleno. Instead of complimentary chips & salsa that you would get at a Mexican restaurant, here they offer you free, large sopapillas. I prefer cinnamon sugar with mine, but settled on the honey that was part of the table setting. LITTLE YELPER'S CLUB Their kids menu is recommended for kids 10 & under. They offer affordable options ranging from tacos to burgers & fries. My oldest enjoyed the quesadillas ($4.50) with added chicken. It came with a side of guacamole and some veggies with homemade Ranch dressing. They did not charge me extra for the chicken. Then I noticed that they charged us adult prices for their beverages: $2.95 for a Dr. Pepper & $2.95 for a lemonade. On the menu kid's sidas are supposedly $1.50. My youngest opted for the chicken strips and fries ($5.25). She enjoyed the chicken but hardly touched the fries. The celery they served in both children's veggie bowl was browning & limp. No wonder kids don't like veggies! Lol. SERVICE Service was fast & friendly. I was a bit perturbed that our waitress started with a table that was seated after us, though. MY FAVORITE PART... My chile relleno. NOT SO FAVORITE PART... The celery served on my kids' veggie bowls. TIPS + there is a Yelp checkin deal for one free order of chips & salsa. Ask if they still honor this! + They posted a sign that "everyone in your party should be present before they will be seated." That certainly wasn't true at approximately 11AM opening time on 9/1/2023! Several tables around us had late-comers.

Yelp
There are some amazing restaurants in Santa Fé. Granted, it isn't what it was in the 90s, but then, what is? When I've left Santa Fé to live elsewhere, I miss green chile. And Colorado can say all it wants, even their "Hatch" labeled green chile doesn't match up. I'm not boasting, it's just the truth. I purchased a bag of "super hot Hatch green chile" peppers this weekend, and guess what? Not a blip. Very mild. I get it, you have to appeal to the popular palate, but then don't label it "Super Hot Hatch." Please. Now, having said that, there is nothing as good as a Tomasitas smothered chile relleno, unless it's homemade. And even then. I was so happy to (a) sit in the bar with a good friend again on a busy Friday night and (b) find that the plate is exactly the same as it was in the 90s. The texture of the breading is always just right, the amount of rice and beans, the slathering of green, and of course, the sopapilla with honey butter. MMM! There's very little wrong with me that can't be cured by that. Very little indeed. It was so good to be back. The service was of course, as good as it ever was, and it still has a friendly, family-run feel. Yes, it's packed with touristas, but when the food's this good, you really don't care. Yes, there are other restaurants that are authentic, with hotter Chile, perhaps even better margaritas (although I didn't partake this time, the bartenders at Tomasitas have never disappointed), but really, I think this old school restaurant stacks-up just fine. Thank you, Tomasitas, for yet another great meal in a long history of dining with you!

Amanda V.

Yelp
Amazing food! Really fresh ingredients. I got the chile relleno's. If in the area again, I would come back!

Yelp
The food was delicious. Atmosphere is like a mom and pop shop, but a little larger. I had the carne adovada which had really nice spice. The waitress was really friendly. The location is also nice, right next to the train station, and they have their own parking.

Alex M.

Yelp
Terrible service, mediocre food at best. We are a family of 6, so in a restaurant that includes a mandatory 20% tip for parties of 6 we are used to receiving subpar service as waitstaff have zero incentive to show up. Tomasita's was obvious example of that. We were seated in a back corner of the restaurant and our waitress I think didn't care to walk that far to even check on us since she already knew she had a 20% tip if she gave even decent service or completely ignored us. We ordered chips/guacamole/salsa for an appetizer. Then for the meal, kids ordered various quesadillas, tacos and nachos. A list of almost all messy finger food. After the food was dropped off by someone other than our waitress we waited for our waitress as all of our drinks were empty, and the one flimsy napkin given to each of us was obviously destroyed with the amount of finger food. After waiting several minutes I finally had to get up from the table and go to the hostess stand to even find our waitress that looked annoyed that I bothered her to refill a water glass. For our family of 6 our bill was over $200. The terrible tip policy meant our waitress got about a $50 tip for seating us, taking our order and walking off. I am AMAZED at our terrible experience for a restaurant that was recommended by more than one local. I will never return and hope I save someone else for an absolutely infuriating and wasted meal in Santa Fe. There are plenty of much better choices in Santa Fe.

Yelp
Wow is Tomasita' popular!! We went right when they opened for dinner and there was already a line to sign in for the wait list, and people waiting for their tables. While you wait, they have a small bar area, but if not lucky to get a spot there you will have to wait in the entrance or outside. Honestly thought we would have to wait over an hour, with the amount of people in front of us but, about 40 mins in, we were called to our table. Service is not great. They were busy and not very attentive or friendly. The guy quickly took our orders, and did not see him again until the food came out. Had to flag him down for a drink too. But that' not surprising in a place like this. So only one star off. As for the food, that's why they are so popular. It comes out fairly fast, big portions, affordable prices, and delicious. Do ask for the sauces on the side if you are sensitive to spicy food - their sauces are very spicy and they do warn you coming in. On the side, you can add as little or as much as you want to add the flavor. The other thing I really liked is that the dish came with a sopapilla. This is one of the best sopapillas I have ever had. Puffy, hot, delicious!!! Came with a honey butter and they also have honey on the tables to add to it. I was so happy. The entire dinner was a success for me, and can't wait to go back for more.

Yelp
We popped in on Friday around 5pm. We were shocked how busy it was (our first time in Santa Fe). We got a seat for 2, one of the final spots in the restaurant. Ordered the salsa gauc queso trio app. It helped calm my anger and was surprised by the size of the guac! Yum. I got the stuffed sopecitos and my husband got the flutas. Servings were huge! I also got the gold marg with lime juice to make it less sweet and it was wonderful! A great spot!
google avatar

Jill C. J.

Yelp
This place is a scene--so crowded. But I would travel across the country just for the sopapillas. Service good, ambience crowded, food good, bathrooms not clean enough-my only real complaint. The green Chile stew has big beautiful carrots in them and a nice flavor. But the sopapillas! Check out the honey butter and eat 'em hot. !
google avatar

Joan B.

Yelp
My husband and I highly Tomasita's for superb tasting, high quality Mexican food. They start out by bringing huge sopaipillas and honey butter. The servers are friendly and attentive. There was a 20 minute wait, but no problem! We went outside and looked at the historical Santa Fe Depot, and trains, and they texted us when our table was ready. The inside of the restaurant was festive and obviously everyone was having a great time! Tomasita's was a real highlight of our trip to Santa Fe. Don't miss it!

Yelp
My husband and i ate here twice during recent visit. Service was friendly, helpful and efficient. I loved the red sangria. The sopapillas were delicious! All the food was delicious, fresh and hot. We love Tomasitas! Highly recommend as a great New Mexican food restaurant.

Yelp
I had the Blue Corn Chicken Enchiladas and I really liked them. Simple yet full of flavor and perfect spice with the green chiles. Waylon got the Monday Super Combo Plate (something like that) and he wasn't much of a fun -- but I don't think this is because the food wasn't good, more so that Waylon is used to Okie Tex Mex and not New Mexican style cuisine. I did only give 3 stars because the service (our waiter) was not very attentive to us. Bottom line -- if you like New Mexican style dishes, you will like it here!

Yelp
True Mexican For over forty years, Tomasita's has been serving up authentic New Mexican cuisine here in this historic brick Santa Fe Railyards location. They're consistently named one of "the best" New Mexican restaurants in the area by local publications, and I'd have to say we heartily agree, as they were maybe the best meal during our visit to New Mexico. The Good: *Great ambiance and Southwestern décor *Free chips and salsa w/ Yelp check-in *Friendly and fast service *Great selection of local brews on-tap *Their Margarita "swirls" were fresh, not too sweet, and packed a nice punch. *A generous helping of freshly-made Sopapillas came with every order and, believe you me, they could charge a pretty penny for just one of these fried doughnuts of the Gods. *Tamales were delicious, and the concomitant chile sauces were fantastic. Pro Tip: You can ask for both red and green by saying, "Make it Christmas!" *Flautas were crispy and delicious *They have their own parking lot (i.e., free) The Meh: *No Yelp Waitlist™ or reservations The Ugly: *There's a pretty good chance you'll have a wait here (see above), as it's a very popular dining destination. TLDR: Fantastic New Mexican food, great service, and in a really cool, historic area. What's not to love??

Yelp
In my opinion, this is the best Southwestern food in Santa Fe. They have a selection of Northern New Mexican cuisine that has made Tomasita's a local New Mexico favorite for over four decades. Choose from their carry out, family style, kids menus, as well as lunch and dinner dine-in menus. Get there by 11 am to avoid a wait, there will be a line! There is a huge parking lot. This is a casual restaurant that has ample seating but it is very popular so be patient!

Yelp
Easily the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. We were told the wait would be half an hour, and that was fine. We had heard good reviews. The wait was about an hour and a half. Once we were seated, it was another half hour before they took our drink orders. When they finally took our food orders, they got mine wrong. Twice. The second time, everyone else was done with their meal so I decided to eat the most bland northern New Mexican "food" I've ever had anyway. We never were asked if we wanted to refresh our drinks, and when we tried - after about thirty minutes of sitting around with no food or drinks - to flag our waitress down for the check, she looked at us an immediately disappeared back into the kitchen. This is the most horrible restaurant I've ever been to. Most horrible service ever. DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT!

Yelp
I called in a to go order because I had my dog with me while traveling. When I went to pick up, I saw they had a patio so I asked if I could switch over to eating on the patio. They happily seated me at a table and brought my pup water right away. It was a fine experience and the food was delicious. The chili relenos were spicy hot and tasty, the enchilada and tamale were tasty but not hot. They have a sign up for unsuspecting customers that state their Chili's are hot and they can't accept returns for the peppers being too hot, which I thought was clever and forthright of them! I highly recommend dining at this restaurant.

Yelp
Food, service and atmosphere were great. Asked the waitress what were popular items to get. As recommended got the chile relleno with green sauce. Husband got the Monday special. The sopapilla and honey butter hit the spot!

Yelp
The restaurant was very busy on a Thursday night. We were first seated next to a family with a screaming child. The host quickly found us a booth by the bar with no children which I found very hospitable and efficient. We ordered The Works appetizer which is Salsa, Guacamole, Queso & Chips. The chips seem to be made in house and are served warm. My companion was sensitive to the aroma of the chips and ordered some warm, homemade tortillas which were delicious. We shared an entree consisting of 2 Chile Rellenos fried in a bread crumb batter and served with a green chile & refried beans. The spice in the salsa and green chile was just right. The service was good considering how busy they were. A team work effort as 3 different people stopped by to insure nothing was amiss. Good food, cold beer & cool interior made for an enjoyable experience.

Yelp
I had an excellent sopaipilla here with the carne adovada. The spice was great, and it was a very good dish. However the waiter didn't bring out any chips and salsa like we originally asked. Additionally, I tipped 15%, and looking back at my final credit card charge, someone upped it to 20%. This could just be a mistake, but I do have a picture of my receipt too, which shows 15%. The difference in money is not a big deal to me, but I'm more concerned someone would modify my tip amount. I'd like to speak to management about this if possible for an explanation. I'm modifying my review, moving it from one star to four stars. I reached out to management, and they kindly looked into the case. They found out that an employee had forgotten to add a diet coke to our tab, so he/she added it to the tip. The manager said that this wasn't the proper way to do things, and he offered me a refund. Since it was about two dollars extra, I declined and thanked him for looking into the case. He thanked me for bringing the discrepancy to his attention, so he could help his team improve. Great customer service here, and I really appreciated the way this was handled.

Yelp
Oh wow. Where to begin? We had margaritas. I had the flight. Wow. It packed a punch! Their recipe is absolutely delicious. We also ordered the lighter plate with a chicken enchilada, posole and chicos. The red chile on the enchilada was amazing. Loved mixing green chiles with posole. My husband had the tamale and cheese enchilada with green chile. And the piece de resistance: sopaipillas. Oh. em. gee. They were indescribably amazing. We buttered ours and drizzled with New Mexico honey they place at all the tables. We were too full for dessert, but we did DoorDash the pinon cheesecake and flan the next night to our B&B. I love, love, love good flan, and this didn't disappoint. Fantastic. The cheesecake was super delish, too. All of their food and their service was like being at Mamas house for a special occasion. Tastes like home and felt warm and welcome. Do not hesitate to try this place. If you like commercialized Mexican food or fusion, this isn't your place. But if you like good food that's cooked like Abuelita or Mamacita used to make, this is your jam.

Yelp
Tomasita's near the Santa Fe railway station is a must-visit for authentic Mexican food. I had a chalupa there, and it was bursting with flavor. The ambience is wonderful, with live music adding to the experience. Additionally, there's ample parking available and the service is top-notch. Highly recommend dining at Tomasita's when in Santa Fe!

Yelp
A couple of years back, I noted a "personal record" of sorts in a Yelp review of Boston's Regina Pizzeria: approximately 35 years between visits to a single restaurant location. Tomasita's might be in second place. Twenty-five years ago, the wife and I were in Santa Fe for just a couple of days and visited Tomasita's. To be honest, I didn't remember all that much about it other than it was good enough and it was the first time I'd ever had sopaipillas. Tomasita's wasn't really on our Santa Fe dining shortlist during a recent weeklong stay, but it still seemed to have a decent enough reputation, it was five minutes from our AirBnB, and it was open for lunch on Sunday. Gotta say I was pleasantly surprised. The food didn't knock our socks off, but nonetheless very enjoyable. I had hoped for a little portion control after overeating the day before and was happy to see the lunch menu's "Lighter Plates" options. Funny stuff, Tomasita's: The "Mexican Plate" was more than adequate to feed one very large hungry person rather than two or three (like some other gargantuan plates I saw coming out of the kitchen), but the red chile chicken enchilada and green chile were very solid versions of those items, and if the posole was a little watery and bland, the onions and cheese helped it a bit. And the pinto beans had obviously been worked over, with good depth of flavor. At $10.95, a fine value in 2023 dollars. The wife got the Southwestern Chicken Salad, and while the salad itself was a bit nondescript (if fresh), the chicken was an A-plus item: tender, juicy, boldly flavored. It was seriously delicious. The restaurant is big, spacious, and clean, with decent natural light during the day, and our server was friendly and efficient. In general, the restaurant seemed to be operating like a well-oiled machine, and I mean that as a compliment. Almost forgot about the sopaipillas: still addictive.

Yelp
Came through Santa Fe, restaurant was highly recommendEd, rated 4.0. It was a Monday and they were pretty busy but The host/hostess were not the most friendly. My gf and I had 30 min. wait which we didn't think was bad, but then they set us in the bar area right in the walkway where people waiting were getting drink. we were bumped into several times. the bar was loud and noisy. We could see tables open in the main dining area Why they sat us in there we couldn't understand. The food was mediocre - average at best. The only good thing about the restaurant was our waiter Jason. He could tell we were unhappy with the situation and he was nice. Won't be returning. BVR

Yelp
Stopped in Santa Fe for the night. This place was open late and decided to give a shot. Glad I did! Great food and atmosphere. Located in the arts district near the Plaza. Such a cool little town. The service was fantastic. If I'm ever back and I'll pay it another visit.

Yelp
Best meal I had in Santa Fe! Located right near the train depot, this restaurant is big and spacious. On a nice day, grab a seat outside overlooking the train cars. Service was friendly and patient for a group that didn't understand what a bowl of "chile" was that you could include "posole" which is really just hominy. When we finally got it together, we were able to order to our liking. I had their menudo with red chili and flour tortillas. Unfortunately, my flour tortillas arrived lukewarm and quickly turned cold, as they are served onna plate that does not protect them from getting cold. The red chile was full of flavor and rich tasting. There was enough heat for me (I love heat!) I would definitely return. My table of 3 others all ate their "chile" with beans and various meats and posole. When they say posole, don't think of the traditional posole soup you normally get in California or Mexico. In any event, you will love it! Oh, and the little sopapillas were worth the hype!

Yelp
I was warned this place was a tourist trap but it was one of the only places open after the movie let out so we went. Low expectations were shattered - waiter was great, bringing us chili samples and having a very nice demeanor. Food was superb, my chicken green chili quesadilla was fantastic. Everyone else loved their meals as well. Great sopapillas with honey and honey butter.
