Fresh sushi, inventive rolls, and friendly service highlight this spot.
"Tomodachi Sushi on Parmer Lane has been around for over 16 years, and it’s always busy, full of locals who are in on the secret that some of Austin’s best sushi can be found here. There are a bunch of crowd-pleasing rolls that are actually pretty good, despite having ludicrous names like “Who's ur Daddy?,” “Say My Name!!,” “xXx,” and “Sex on the Beach.” But the best thing to do here is order anything and everything off of the specials board of fish, flown in from all over, including Hawaii and Japan." - nicolai mccrary, raphael brion
"The far north Japanese restaurant is a reliable spot for amazing traditional and fusion sushi (just ignore the bizarre names of the rolls). Keep an eye out for the truly remarkable specials. It’s in a strip mall, so there isn’t much ambiance to speak of — the focus is on making great sushi." - Nadia Chaudhury

"From the team behind Perla’s, Clark’s, Sammie’s, Jeffrey’s, and roughly 85% of the remaining restaurants in Austin, Neighborhood Sushi offers excellent nigiri, rolls, and Japanese-inspired bites out of a semi-hidden dining room on South Congress (the entrance is through the parking lot in the back). Despite the name, it’s not really priced like a casual neighborhood spot, and the interior is far too polished and dressed up to indicate otherwise. But you’re here for the melt-in-your-mouth fish and well-seasoned rice, not convenience (unless you happen to live near South Congress). The nigiri is generously sized and leans pretty classic in the preparation. The rolls, on the other hand, veer a little farther from tradition, including things like grilled cubanelle mayo, fermented chili, and jalapeños, for what feels like a vaguely Texan twist on familiar flavors. We also really like the grilled fish collars—the skin comes out charred and crispy, with tender meat that you’ll want to dig out with your fingers. And it’s served with a small bowl of pickled wasabi with lime and sea salt that’s spicy, tangy, and a strong contender for “Best Dips We’ve Eaten This Year.” photo credit: Richard Casteel" - Nicolai McCrary

Tomodachi is charmingly old school—they’ve got a website, but if you want to order takeout or make a reservation for their small-ish dining room or sushi bar, you’ll have to use a telephone to call the restaurant. photo credit: Richard Casteel" - Raphael Brion
"Far north Austin Japanese gem specializes in traditional and fusion fare. Come for the ahi tuna-spicy seaweed poke on the cold menu. Stay for the friendly service." - Elizabeth Leader Smith
