14 New Delivery-Only Restaurants Born Out Of The Pandemic - New York - The Infatuation

"Unless you’re dating a sushi chef, you’ve probably never had anyone prepare and serve you sushi at home. Tomokase is ready to change that with its new delivery service, which includes 15 pieces for $200 or 20 pieces for $250, and requires a minimum order of $400 to reserve. But beyond the high-quality fish, they’ll also send a private chef to prepare and serve everything, while sticking to strict COVID-19 protocols. Tomokase is working with a rotating list of NYC sushi chefs (who are currently out of work due to the pandemic) to make this happen in Manhattan, Long Island City, Brooklyn, and parts of New Jersey. For more information and booking details, head here." - nikko duren

Tried the 20 piece omakase at home for $220 before tip. The team was friendly and professional but the sushi was a bit underwhelming in terms of quality and flavor. Overall, it isn’t worth it and ranks low on my list for omakases in NYC.

Google
Had an absolutely incredible experience with Tomokase! I hired them to host a private proposal dinner with my now fiancée! They were extremely professional and accommodating and made us feel extremely comfortable. Aside from the awesome service the food is amazing!!! Definitely one of our favorite omakase lineups along with the sake tasting makes for an awesome evening! Can’t say enough good things!

Google
Best sushi experience! High quality sushi in the comfort of my own home. I definitely recommend upgrading to the 20 piece to get all the best pieces. My favorite was the mackerel!

David Lu

Google
Amazing experience. The Amuse Bouche dishes were particularly interesting, with soft shell crab and Kamo Nasu eggplant. The chef and server were friendly and professional, but also made the experience very comfortable. We had the sake tasting which featured 3 separate bottles with distinct flavors. Definitely recommend trying.

Google
Booked Tomokase for my fiancés birthday and it was…. a spectacular success!!! Wowowow I’m shocked this service is not booked months in advance. Such a home run (no pun intended).

Google
We had a wonderful experience with Chef Koichi and Misami! The food was excellent and they were very accommodating. It was definitely worth the price of being able to enjoy a special night at home with my significant other. Can’t wait until next time!

Google
Tomokase was one of the more upscale Omakase restaurants. The service was excellent on its own terms, however you have to reserve them through Tock, and Tock offers prepaid services. Each individual should be prepared to spend at least $200, not including any additional fees for possible sake consumption. According to the average cost, you are actually spending $15+ per course for the omakase, this is the course alone, not the sake. It's great. The mackerel was a little fishy, in my opinion. The product they offered is high quality, but not to the extent of costing $15 or more per unit on average. Monkfish Liver was good. Let them know if you have any food allergy. It's a great place to try once, not casual dinning often.

Google
Great experience, the chef was super helpful and explained every fish and each step to preparing it! The sushi tasted better than anything I’ve around the area. Would definitely recommend everyone to try at least once!

Yelp
After engaging with Tomokase for a home-based birthday bash, I came away impressed by their sheer punctuality and professionalism. Arriving ahead of schedule to set up, they came fully equipped, even anticipating needs we hadn't considered, like chopstick rests and hand wipes--a testament to their attention to detail. The sake pairing was a hit, with smooth selections that complemented the sushi perfectly. Despite a minor hiccup with an unannounced menu change, the evening was salvaged by the stellar service and the interaction with our chef and server who were both attentive and engaging. From the jackfish to the scallops, every bite was a delight. They even threw in a cheesecake to cap off the meal. It's a premium service, but for a special occasion, Tomokase is worth every penny.

Yelp
If I could give them 6 stars I would, 5 is not enough. We were blown away by this entire experience. We were looking to surprise my brother for his 25th birthday with a really high end dinner experience and I found out about Tomokase. They travel up to 130 miles from NYC, so they came to us in Jeffersonville, NY in a house we rented for the weekend! They go to NJ, Hamptons, West Chester and more! Kenji was our chef and Nau was our server and they were so sweet and professional! But the fish was the most incredible fish I have ever eaten. The courses featured fish you can't really find anywhere else including Tuna Collar which was so melt in your mouth delicious. The food was presented beautifully as well as being so amazing and delicious. If you ever want to have a sushi experience at home, use Tomokase, you will not regret it. I am dying to try their actual restaurant!

Yelp
I was super hesitant to do an at home omakase but I really wanted to surprise my boyfriend for his birthday and Tomokase did not disappoint! They were super helpful and responsive via email. They made sure to follow up with me and make sure everything was perfect to surprise my boyfriend. We opted for a 4-person light omakase (10 pieces). One of our guests is a picky eater and they were super accommodating. He ended up having mostly salmon, yellowtail and veggies but everything was varied so he could have a similar experience to us! We did the sake pairings add-on and it was delicious. They brought over 3 different types and each were crisp and matched well with the omakase. My faves were: -Perch (so fresh!) -Hotate (scallop) -Uni (usually I don't like Uni [a sin as a foodie I know] but this was soo good) -both salmons (king and Scottish) -sea eel (similar to unagi but apparently diff and way better imo) -the cheesecake was a great sweet ending to the meal Kenji was our sushi chef and he was AMAZING. So nice, approachable and knowledgeable. You can tell he's honed his craft and takes pride in his work. We also had a waitress who was just as great (this was back in June and I forget her name) They both made sure to keep our drinks full, our bites fresh and the vibe/fun going! They interacted with us and told us about the different dishes and fish we were eating but also gave us private time. They also took pictures for us! Can't thank them enough for making it such a special event. They were quick to set up, professional and cleaned up efficiently afterwards. They brought everything we would need, plates, sake glasses etc. Overall, it is expensive but imo worth it! You pay for the quality, service and it's all done in your home! I didn't have to lift a finger. Best sushi I've had in NYC so far. I would 1000% recommend Tomokase and can't wait to try them again.

Yelp
what a fun and unique way to celebrate any special event! I booked the 15 piece omakase for a group of 8 people on my birthday. They were very responsive and answered all my questions prior to booking the event. I thought 15 piece might not be enough but actually we were stuffed by the end. On the day of the event, they were on time and brought everything with them. My only wish was that they had sent me a confirmation text that morning - I was concerned when I hadn't heard from them until 30 mins before the event. But once there, the service was excellent and they kept the meal moving at a great pace. There were tons of different types of fish and other seafood and I loved the variety. You do lose a little bit in freshness just because you're asking the chef to bring all the cuts with them, but overall I thought the food was very good. In sum, an expensive experience but worth every penny for a special evening. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Unique experience where the chef and a server comes to your apartment to cook for you. 20 course omakase with a dessert for $300 (post-tip + post-tax). The fish was fresh and delicious. The uni was from Maine and 4/5, fatty toro 5/5, ebi 5/5, scallop 4/5, little squid head appetizer 4/5, and the other pieces pretty much 5/5. The chef was funny, courteous, and friendly. The majority of the 20 pieces was already cut, so it was primarily assembly with the rice. Each piece was fresh and well bundled with rice. It was different with him coming over to the apartment, setting up, talking to us, cooking for us, and sharing stories. Will try again for the in-home experience. I still enjoy the restaurant in-person, but I would say this is worth a try.

Yelp
I had the pleasure and privilege to experience Tomokase this week and it was mind blowing to say the least. (I know it sounds exaggerated, but it was just THAT good!) My husband's friend had his first Tomokase experience late 2021 and he was excited for us to try; he and his wife kindly hosted us at their home. The chef and maitre d' arrived right on time, quickly and efficiently set up the kitchen and dining area and our sushi feast began! The menu was perfectly customized to our host's feedback from his first time- some of the highlights for me were the seared sushi (a little blast of fire goes a long way!) like the seared uni and seared fatty tuna. OH and the seared shime saba- this is mackeral cured in vinegar- the sear brought out the delicious fattiness of mackeral and it simply melted in my mouth...! Combined with the nori (dried seaweed) they used- the crunch and flavor of the nori, I'm salivating as I write this- it was a beautiful, elevated version of the shime saba sashimi that was served for dinner sometimes at home. For dessert- cheesecake! I was a little surprised-in my mind, cheesecake is a dessert on the heavy side, so was like will this go with sushi? Answer: YES- the cheesecake was light but satisfying, and was the perfect end. The service is a huge part of this experience- the coordination between the maitre d' and the chef was impeccable. The maitre d' explained each fish to us, and once we've cleared our plates, the plates would glide back and surprise! a new plate of delectable sushi was served. I think timing plays a huge part in meals like this, and it was seamless. Please note, they bring their own plates, placemats and utensils! AND they clean up! Simply put, worth every cent! The quality of the fish, the service, and the experience- Impeccable.

Yelp
After tirelessly answering my relentless questions for the weeks beforehand, Tomokase came thru for a birthday celebration. We chose the 15 piece option, which includes 15 pieces of nirigi, plus a tuna starter and cheesecake dessert. Our maitre d (Nao) was kind, patient and informative. She was accompanied by a chef who prepared the food using fresh rice via a rice cooker. My expectations were truly exceeded. The tl;dr most critical takeaway: the food was incredibly delicious. The sushi rice was (pleasantly) room temp/warm and seasoned well. As a result, each piece tasted balanced in the way you'd expect from a top-end sushi bar experience. We were given a range of fish, some I've had before and others I haven't. All of the food was prepared with care that I'd expect from an establishment recognized by Michelin. This experience is not inexpensive. But unlike other pricey options that fail to meet the level, I was left satisfied, pleased and full-bellied with Tomokase. Look forward to the next meal with them!

Yelp
I recently booked Tomokase for a birthday dinner for 5 people and the whole experience did not disappoint! They arrived 30 minutes earlier to set up and while I had bought placemats and chopsticks because I wasn't sure what they would bring, it turned out they also had chopsticks and even the chopsticks rests for people. They had also brought hand wipes, which I thought was a nice touch. I had also ordered the sake pairing, and they provided the sake glasses. All that was needed was access to drinking/tap water, and an outlet for their rice cooker. The sake was smooth and each paired well with the sushi. (We were given 4 full bottles over the course of the meal to try). Our favorites were the jackfish, toro, and scallop. They also provided cheesecake at the end. The menu title could be customized, as long as you gave them more than a day's notice. The only thing I wish they had done was notify us earlier that they were out of the hand roll - instead, we found out at the dinner that they would be offering us a replacement. While the replacement was still good, the heads up would've gone a long way. Regardless, Otis, our chef, and Iku, our server, were awesome! Iku explained sake tasting notes and was always watching to make sure everyone's water cup was full and that courses came out when people were done. She would clear the table so efficiently that there were times my friends would be surprised that the new plate had already replaced their finished plates. Otis was also great and was more than gracious in allowing my (tipsy haha) husband to go to the kitchen to film him making sushi - and when we invited him and Iku to take a shot with us at the end, he downed his in good spirits. We overall loved the entire experience, and I would definitely do it again!

Yelp
I have nothing but great things to say about this at-home omakase experience. This was booked by my boyfriend as a surprise Valentine's gift. We did the 20 course omakase and everything from the food and service exceeded my expectations. 20 courses easily filled me, and that didn't even include the appetizer and dessert. Halfway through the menu I was already reaching my limits because they are extremely generous with their portions - which I appreciate considering omakase can be expensive. This was some of the freshest sushi I had. We were informed that the fish come straight from Japan (except the salmon) and you can tell that this fish is unlike any fish you've had here in the U.S. The menu was thoughtfully curated, and included some very unique pieces that you don't typically see in other omakase restaurants. Our maitre D was extremely personable and made us feel so comfortable. She was also extremely knowledgeable about the food menu and of the sake we ordered. The experience itself was personalized to fit the occasion. They printed out a customized menu just for us and provided a beautiful bouquet of flowers since we were celebrating Valentine's Day. This was such a unique experience, I raved about it for days to my friends and now a handful of them want to do this!

Yelp
When I first heard of Tomokase and it's price point I did not expect the quality of food, service, and presentation they delivered. I was blown away with the traditional Edo-Mae style sushi from Chef Take, and the staff's personable yet attentive service; it all made for one of the best birthday dinners I have had in years. While restaurant dining and ambiance are fantastic, nothing beats the comfort of bringing the experience home. Where else can you have an amazing sushi dinner then immediately hop back into PJs and watch Netflix? If you're looking for trendy, modern fusion style sushi, this is not the place to get it. But if you are looking to have Tokyo quality flavors, ingredients, and preparation from someone who is truly passionate and excels at his craft, give Chef Take and Tomokase a call. You won't regret it, already have my next meal booked!

Yelp
We had such an incredible at-home omakase experience!! I booked it for my husband's birthday and it was so memorable. The attention to detail was amazing- custom menu, a beautiful floral arrangement, beautiful plates and everything you need. The sushi was so fresh and each course just kept getting better. The chef and team were on time, friendly and lovely to be around. Definitely book with them for a night you won't forget!

Yelp
The experience was AMAZING and EXCEEDED my expectation! My friends and I each ordered the 20-piece omakase for $250/person and added additional $50 for sake pairing. This might be one of the best sushi meals I have ever had, at the comfort of my own home. The sushi chef REALLY knows what he is doing. The ingredients are FRESH and the fish is the HIGEST grade imaginable (shipped from Japan). The entire Tomokase team showed up on time and was well prepared to get the party started. For health and safety reason, they showed me their Covid test results (they test on a weekly basis). Service was professional and elegant (you'll feel like an emperor). Overall, the food, service, and experience are worth the price. Tomokase converted me into a loyal, recurring customer! I can't wait to host the next dinner at my home and impress my guests.

Yelp
An amazing in home omokase experience! Everyone at Tomkase lended to an incredible and authentic omokase journey through 15 courses. We were delighted and completely satisfied with our adventure and cannot wait to come back for more.

Yelp
Unbelievable experience!!! Everything was delicious and Kenji and Nao were just the best. Looking forward to our next meal.

Yelp
Given most counter sushi restaurants remain closed, this proved to be the right concept at the right time for a proper and authentic omakase experience in NYC. Chef Take truly is remarkable and his omakase was probably the best I've ever had in NYC. He and the hostess were courteous, made for an incredible evening, and we all left satiated. While it's pricey, it is amazing value compared to sushi omakases in NYC and from the comfort of your own home. Can't wait to order it again for my next special occasion!

David W.

Yelp
We just had Tomokase come over to prepare sushi in our home. What a treat! I'm incredibly picky about sushi, but I'm happy to say that I thought the sushi was delicious and the service was great. I highly recommend it for a very special evening.

Yelp
Amazing at-home omakase experience! I booked this as a birthday dinner for myself and had high expectations, which were exceeded! The fish was extremely high quality and the service was great, and all from the comfort of my own home

Yelp
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! My girlfriend and I used to go to omakase restaurant every now and then, but obviously COVID is really making us crave it a lot. Heard Tomokase through word of mouth and decided to give it a shot. First of all, the reservation experience was so seemless, gotta give their staff mad props since it's a brand new concept. Second, the actual omakase experience was AMAZING, definitely lived up to praises that my friends had about Tomokase. My girlfriend and I just sat back and relaxed and the staff took care of everything from prepping to serving. Heard they are heavily booked. Not surprised honestly. So if you haven't tried it, book now!

Yelp
my husband and I had an amazing experience for our anniversary with Chef Kitahara and Maitre D' Vincent! they went above and beyond to make our evening special and all the food was delicious. we left feeling full and very loved :) would recommend to anyone celebrating or who just simply loves good fish!

Yelp
There's nothing quite like having a high end omakase experience in the comfort of your own home, especially with Chef Takeshita. Haven't been able to have good sushi in a long time and this team delivered. They take care of everything - you can just sit back and enjoy the show. Won't be able to do this every weekend, but it was perfect for a special date night. Highly recommend!

Hope Z.

Yelp
So impressed!! Not only was the sushi absolutely delicious, but the experience itself was also one of a kind. The staff were incredibly friendly, considerate, and attentive. My friends and I had so much fun and our stomachs were beyond full by the end! Well worth the price. Highly, highly recommend!

Yelp
Highly recommend - very classy experience, high quality sushi, and great way to bring the fine dining ambience to your home

Yelp
I never write reviews but was so impressed by my Tomokase experience that I had to share - anyone who's considering booking, DO IT. You will not be disappointed. After a lot of research, I booked the 20-piece omakase with sake tasting for my birthday. The team showed up early, came with absolutely everything they needed, and even brought me beautiful flowers. Our sake glasses were literally never empty, the maître d' was unbelievably attentive. He and the chef were so knowledgeable about the fish and sake, and they cleaned up everything after - no cooking or cleaning on our side, what could be better than that? Oh yeah, amazing food! The fish was truly out of this world. We are huge sushi eaters and have even had omakase at the Four Seasons in Japan and dare I say, this experience was better. We had extra fish left over and our chef kindly prepared it into maki rolls for our lunch the next day! They go beyond to make it special. The portions were large, the fish they selected were unique (and fresh), we never felt rushed at all (~3 hour experience), and they followed all of my arrival instructions. Five stars is not enough!
