"Tom’s—a sceney Italian restaurant in Hackney Downs—is where you go to eat tiramisu while giving your leopard print gilet its first outing. Much like its TikTok-bait lasagne, the tiramisu here comes in a decadent, thick wedge and doesn’t scrimp on any of the layers. It has lots of cream which, in case you were wondering, is the right amount of cream. But the layers still remain distinct and you can pick up pleasing hits of bitterness and chocolate." - sinead cranna, jake missing, rianne shlebak, daisy meager

"At Tom’s Pasta, the drinks are strong, there’s a thickly layered, TikTok-bait lasagne, and a slightly haphazard supper club feel. Despite that, and the fact that the lasagne doesn’t quite live up to the hype, the permanent pop-up Italian restaurant in Hackney Downs is still a fun place to visit to see and be seen while giving your leopard print gilet its first outing. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch By day this airy, industrial space is Brunswick East Bakehouse and caters to the needs of Hackney Downs’ start-up contingent. But come evening, fashionable couples sip blood orange spritzes and groups pile onto the big communal table, extinguishing candles and speckling tables with sauce as they reach across for a bite of their friend’s dish. Forgotten drinks are forgiven and mushy lasagne overlooked as conversations increase in volume and a flurry of phone camera flashes capture the beauty of a parmesan snow storm. If a sceney dinner party atmosphere is your priority, you’ll love Tom’s. If you want perfect pasta, we’d go to one of these spots instead. Food Rundown photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Sourdough Bread & Parmesan Butter This parmesan butter is the stuff of our dairy-based fantasies. There are salty little crystals of cheese dispersed throughout the creamy butter and we always want more than the scoop that arrives on the plate. The bread has the perfect crispy crust, and we appreciate that it’s softer than some teeth-shattering sourdough. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Beef Shin Lasagne The TikTok sensation. The dish that flies out the kitchen. It’s undeniably tasty, in the way that any cheesy pasta is tasty. But look a little closer and you’ll realise the sheets of pasta are overcooked and there’s probably a few too many too. The beef shin ragu isn’t saucy enough and that parmesan shower sucks all the remaining moisture out of the dish. Beef Shin Ragu Tagliatelle If you want to try the beef shin ragu, get it with the tagliatelle rather than the lasagne. The pasta is cooked perfectly and the sauce is glossy enough to coat each strand. It’s not as show-stopping to look at as the lasagne, but it tastes a lot better. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Tiramisu Our ideal meal at Tom’s goes a little something like this: bread and parmesan butter, blood orange spritz, tiramisu, another spritz. The tiramisu is excellent. It’s got distinctive layers, isn’t too heavy on coffee, and has lots of cream—which is the right amount of cream." - Sinéad Cranna

"Beef shin lasagne  “The only snowy scene I’m interested in this year is the one on top of the lasagne at Tom’s Pasta. This hefty slab came topped with a generous showering of parmesan and, like the first snow of Christmas, I was immediately excited upon seeing it. The sauce was on the thicker side and the shredded pieces of flavourful beef shin felt like a decadent take on the usual minced meat. The pasta was perfectly cooked too, so each layer was distinct and didn’t meld into a mushy mess. Eating this on a cold evening at the Italian spot in Hackney felt like an appropriately wholesome way to round off the year”- SC " - Jake Oliver, Rianne Shlebak, Sinead Cranna

The beef shin lasagne was delicious!! We had the olives and sourdough too, and both really tasty. (If you like olives, these are fab!) The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was nice. I can’t wait to come back for the lasagne again!

The bruschetta, burrata and lasagna were absolutely incredible. Please get the beef shin and nduja lasagna - the nduja gives it a small subtle spice kick and it is honestly the game changer for me. So rich and delicious - every bite I died and went to heaven. 10/10 service too. Have already re-booked and was only there last night.

Honestly disappointed 😭 I’ve been wanting to come here so badly and it was lowkey a let down. The service was nothing special, the waitress came and took our order and that was it. The food was lackinnggg in salt. Most things had so much potential and would’ve actually tasted good if it had salt. It was underwhelming. The garlic bun was also not a bun. It was sourdough. If you get ONE starter it has to be the bruschetta!! So so good. The lasagna was pretty good and I think it was worth the hype. Only thing would be that it was very mushy. The Tiramisu was good but SOOOO sweet. You’d be done after 2 bites. Overall, the prices were good and the atmosphere was good!

They are not lying when they say this is one of the best lasagna in London. I’ll highly recommend just go with the classic beef chin ragú. The food felt really fresh. The staff were very friendly. One highlight is the business where you can get the drinks, they have great variety and the staff was absolutely lovely, recommended me an amazing drink.

Genuinely the best lasagne I've ever had. Had burrata for the starter which was delicious, lasagne and nduja for the main which was a great combination and good portion. The pistachio gelato also great. Service was friendly and the price was very good. Highly recommend

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Menu was very simple which is best in my opinion. The Nduja lasagne was so good with perfect amount of spice and cheese on top. The tiramisu was very sweet but I like that, and a large variety of drinks inside the restaurant.

Wonderful spot! The service was friendly and quick, the food was delightful and very reasonably priced. The parmesan butter was rich and interesting. Nothing crazy to shout about for the burrata just good quality oil, salt and bread made for a nice start. The mains were fantastic! Beef shin lasagne was deep and flavourful, not as saucy as other lasagnes I’ve eaten but the meat was tender and melt-in-your-mouth good, a spin on a classic that really works. The sausage and leek pasta was warming and saucy with the perfect amount of spice. Make sure to save some bread for mopping it up! Both topped with an unbelievable amount of Parmesan, no need to tell your server when to stop grating. In hindsight it would have been better not to get two rich and meaty mains to share, something creamy or more complementary would have been a good idea but there’s always next time! They also have a wonderful range of cocktails or you can purchase beers from the separate bar inside. It’s a lovely location run by guys who clearly love making good food that makes people happy.

The beef shin lasagna is so flavourful and the texture of the pasta in the mushroom tagliatelle was perfect. Make sure you save room for dessert, the tiramisu is one of the best in London.
