Had a fantastic experience buying my first suit at Tom’s Place. Lionel was excellent—he advised me and walked me through the entire selection process with real care and expertise. Mansour, the in-house tailor, was professional, quick, and incredibly precise with exactly what I needed. The suit looked amazing for my event and was finished perfectly on time. Warm, welcoming atmosphere, and getting to meet Tom himself is always a pleasure. Highly recommend.

Richard and Mansoor were excellent! I came in for my first suit and they made the experience delightful. They value the perfect fit over selling you a higher price tag and that tells me that they truly care about their customers. I’ll definitely be back for my second suit :)

Tom's Place is nothing like I expected, it's extremely vast. They give great prices and save you money and pick out the perfect pairings for you if you so wish, and Taylor in house. 100% the place to go to get outfits. Wanted to give a shout out to Mansour and Joe for an absolutely fantastic customer-centric experience. Joe presented me with a number of suits that fit my desired purpose and he was not only an expert on the fabrics and fashion trends but was also, most importantly, patient and understanding of my constraints. I ended up purchasing multiple suits which (i) required multiple alterations and (ii) were needed on an expedited basis and the talented Mansour was able to execute on the alterations and deliver all of the suits on an expedited timeline without requiring any further adjustments. I have since gone back to purchase another suit and intend on coming back every few months to check out their new styles and fabrics.

Amazing experience from start to finish! Lionel helped me pick out the perfect suit super patient and knew exactly what would look good on me. Mansour did an incredible job tailoring it to fit perfectly. The attention to detail and level of service were top-notch. Highly recommend both of them if you want to look sharp and feel confident in your suit! Will definitely be back.

This place is old school in the best way possible. The staff know exactly what to do and how to dress you. The selection is peak and there's a huge variety. I walked away feeling well served and looking sharp. Tom's is my new go-to place

I was greeted by Tom and welcomed into the store. He asked his son Tom to attend to my needs. In less than 30 minutes I purchased a suit, two sports jackets, a winter dress coat and two pocket squares. The service was outstanding and the prices very reasonable. I love Tom's Place. You will too.

The family and staff were friendly, polite, patient, and kind. I bought two suits that I was very happy with and will buy there again.

this was my first foray into buying a suit since I had top surgery and I was nervous and they treated me amazingly and I got an amazing dinner jacket and I'm very very pleased.

Since I live nearby and can walk there easily, I'm biased of course, but it sure gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling spending real coin at a local business instead of a nameless, faceless corporate outfit somewhere in a concrete parking lot or sanitized for your protection mall. It was the first time I was actually inside Tom's and had a satisfying experience. It was pretty cool to see Tom sitting there staring down, sorry, greeting people as they enter the place. What an icon of Kensington and part of the fabric of this market. They don't come any more genuine than this. Since I don't usually need business attire, I haven't needed to go in over the years but suddenly I felt the urge to spend some money on looking fine for a planned milestone fine dining night out at George Restaurant. I brought my planned outfit in and got the sales guy's opinion of where to best spend money to up my game, looks-wise. My sister had mentioned that I should have a dark jacket rather than grey and the sales guy agreed. He pulled a gorgeous black cashmere jacket off the rack and it fit perfectly! Sure it was pricier than the on-sale stuff found generally, but it wasn't mass produced off shore in some sweat shop and instead is an Italian made quality product which shows by the way it looks. They threw in some socks and I was happily on my way. The guy said, that with this new jacket, I will likely wear it more than the old one and he was right! I wore it another couple times just going to regular divey bars and noticed it upped my respect level wherever I went wearing it cuz, you can never be over-dressed!

Shopped their today with my son (18) who needed black pants & white shirt for summer job. Seen by Paul who guided us quickly upstairs to most expensive Italian clothes. I advised Paul that we had a $300 budget. Paul said not to worry as Tom will give us a deal. Well, the pants were $175 and $225. Tom took about $25 off. I should have insisted on less expensive pants on the first floor, where we shopped before. Smooth, seasoned sales guy Paul, who was determined to upsell us. Fooled us once. Won't be back. Disappointing experience.

I have bought most of my suits, jackets and dress pants at Tom's Place for some years now. Their products and service are the best! You'll find some designer clothing here that is twice the price up on Bloor Street. I'm a happy and loyal customer!

This is an awful place. They profile you the moment you walk in, and you get treated according to their judgement of you based on whether they think you have money or not. I got asked to leave today after taking too long to try on some suits without buying. Nothing they had really fit, though the sales people wont tell you that. The first thing I tried on today was a medium brown linen suit that looked like a crumpled paper bag on me, but the sales people were giving me the "lookin' sharp!" nods as they walked by. I tried on several suits, most of which didn't fit very well, and none of which made me feel the way a suit should make you feel. I am a careful purchaser. I have purchased suits in the past that I was later unhappy with and I won't do that again if I can help it. I have been going to Tom's on and off since sometime in the early 90s. Haven't spent a LOT of money there, though I have bought a suit, an expensive wool cardigan and some shirts there, maybe $1500 over the years. Not a lot of money, but certainly not nothing. A salesperson's weekly wage, maybe. Most of the time when I go in I see shirts I really like, but they never have any that fit me. (I am older, with a fairly large midsection, and it seems like everything they have that I like is medium and slim fit). I went there once with a friend and his son, and as we walked in and went to the right to check out shirts, which is also where they had their stuff on sale at the time, I heard a salesperson saying something about the cheap people going to the sales table first. ??!!! Today, after I had spent about 45 minutes trying on several suits, Tom himself came up to me and told me to make up my mind or leave, in a loud voice so everyone around could hear. Yes, really. I wasn't really embarrassed because I know who I am and I know who they are, but if you plan on going there understand who you are dealing with. They will sell you anything, so if you don't know what you are doing, I strongly suggest you go somewhere else. You are better off spending $2000 on a suit that makes you feel great, than $500 on something that doesn't quite fit, or which you aren't comfortable in. BTW Tom? I don't wear suits very often, but I like good ones. The last suit I bought was a Canali suit at Harry Rosen Yorkdale, for $2200, which is about 4 times the cost of the suits I was looking at today. Unfortunately, I don't like it that much. Had you had something I really liked today, I would have bought it, and in fact as I was heading to the mirror for one last look at the dark grey linen suit, the possibility of buying it was very much in my mind, since with a bit of alteration it would have probably been okay. It was so much cooler (temperature -wise) than the Tombolino suit, which looked good, but was too warm (and style-wise it looked a lot like the Canali suit I already have anyway). I guess I'll have to get something made-to-measure, but I'm sure you understand that - though I asked your son today about the cost of made to measure - you have lost the opportunity to sell me anything. I understand that you probably have some concerns about shoplifting given that you are in the Market, but honestly, the way you treat people is despicable.

Came up from Windsor with my 18yro son to find a "different" suit for his prom, plus 2 upcoming family weddings. Can't say enough about how terrific everyone was. Suit, extra pants ordered, shirt, cuff-links, plus the pants were hemmed before I had finished paying! He's a very slim fit, and he needed zero alterations to anything else. Incredible selection, cool street to wander down on a Saturday. Thx to Tom and our sales guy. (Tony?) David looked amazing at his prom last week.

2.5 Stars. The store is very large with two levels (doesn't really look it from the outside) and the selection is huge! Service was variable, some staff were better than others. All were very eager to get a sale and my fiance did feel a bit of pressure. Nonetheless we spent about $800 on a suit here for our wedding. Where most of the stars were lost was the alterations process. It took over a month for minor alterations, and my fiance is not happy with the work. He had a bad feeling when the tailor came out and roughly made a few chalk marks (took less than 2 minutes to do so). We decided to trust them since they probably go through a lot of suits, but it turns out it wasn't very precise and the suit needs further alterations. Expected better tailoring as we spent $800 on the suit and paid $50 for alterations, and waited over a month. Now have to spend extra money elsewhere to improve the fit since my fiance doesn't trust Tom's Place to fix it. Decently happy with the suit itself, but would definitely opt to go elsewhere for alterations.

Tom and the guys at Tom's Place really look after you. Fabulous selection and caring service, not to mention great prices!

Selection is pretty damn fantastic. However I don't know why Yelp or Torontonians in general think this place is affordable. Men's pants *start* at $165. Suits *start* at $700. Last time I went I couldn't find a decent shirt under $200 I do think for the quality they provide that those are reasonable prices, however I would hardly call it anywhere near affordable. Certainly not Hermes prices, but I think the affordable reputation in Toronto is unearned. That having been said the selection is absolutely outstanding. If you want to find something, you are going to find it here. If money isn't a thing to you, most definitely come here. I vouch for the quality.

Pretty good experience overall. I was served by John who greeted me at the door asking me what kind of suit I was looking for. He was friendly, personable, and knew what he was doing. We were able to find the right suit for me on my first try and I'm happy with the purchase! However after looking at the brand of my suit, I am under the impression that their "discounts" are only there to make it seem like you're getting a bargain, when in reality you're just paying the regular price if it were at another store.

I've heard about this place from friends over the years and now needing a new suit, I decided to see what the fuss was about. Well worth it!! Incredible service. Great selection. I thought I'd be in there for at least an hour but I was in, found a perfect suit, the tailor measured me and out in half an hour. Well done. I highly recommend Tom's!

I came here a little while back. The salesman brought me 2 options for suits, and both were terrible. He said they don't have anything that's big enough for me. This was odd, since I'm average height, and even if I may be a little on the chubby side (especially during the cold Canadian winter), I'm by no means the largest guy to ever buy a suit. To add insult to injury, the salesman even said that no place would have a suit for me, and that I would have to have one tailor made. Needless to say, I was totally embarrassed. I went instead to Harry Rosen, where they treated me like a million bucks. The salesman was very accommodating and flattering and brought out many suit options, insisting he can do better with yet other options. I ended up spending a good chunk of of money on a very nice and flattering designer suit. Let me tell you, it was worth every penny.

They will rip you off! I bought a jacket in which the guy told me it was $450.00 - thinking I'm a good barterer I got them down to $300.00. Afterwards I took it to a guy who used to be in a similar business where he told me they ripped me off - there were no prices on the jacket, no labels as to what the jacket is made of etc. except that it was made for Tom's Place. They will supposedly call Tom to see if he will go down to a better price but I doubt anyone was on the other end. You can do much better at so many other places in Toronto but if you do go please do so with your eyes wide open and do not buy anything that does't already have a price on it. I will never go back. So disapointed in myself for falling for this scam.

I was recently part of a wedding party whose groom decided that we would be buying our suits from Tom's. I have always been told that it woul d be a good place for me to check out good designer suits and so on and so forth, so I was pretty excited. As the end goal was matching suits, we were reasonably expected to reserve our jacket size; fair enough. When the day came to go get measured for alterations, a friend of mine was told that they did not have his size and he would have to wear TWO sizes smaller or he "could always just lose some weight". He's a big guy and kind of oddly proportioned, so while still pretty dickish, I could kind of understand that he'd be a difficult fit. Me, on the other hand, was forced to wear two-sizes UP from a 38, and their solution was to make us pay for a ton of alterations, which still ended up looking far too big. Suit + Alterations probably cost around $450-500 (I'm not sure how much the alterations cost, but considering they pretty much disassembled and reassembled the suit, I'm sure it was over $100). For that price, I could have gotten a made-to-measure suit from one of the many online tailors (Brooklyn Tailors, Modasuite, etc) and have it fit like a glove. Hell, I've bought suits from H&M and Mexx that fit better than this suit after alterations, for less than half the cost! This place thrives on people who want to feel they've gotten a bargain for a brand name, instead of spending money on a proper-fitting suit that was made properly for their bodies.

You know, I've always judged Tom's Place to be a lower quality spot - similar to Moore's. I was pleasantly surprised to have experienced something completely different. While they don't carry the same selection as Holt's or Harry Rosen's, they do carry a similar selection but at significantly lower price points. My end view of Tom's is it's a great place for accessorizing. So if you need bowties, tux shirts, or the rare dress shirt with collar bar, you might want to stop here. But i wouldn't recommend getting entirely suited up here.

I'm sure glad I read the reviews for Tom's Place after I had already made my purchase - I feel like some of the negative feedback might have scared me off of the place entirely. That being said, I'd received enough personal recommendations from both family and friends that I made the trek into Kensington last week to look for a suit, three days before a wedding. Now I don't pretend to know everything, or really anything, about suits. I know roughly what's in style and what is out of style. Slim cut, IN, box cut, OUT, Thin over wide lapels, and so on. For the purists who've slammed Tom's place, sure, maybe this isn't the best place for you, but, for someone like me who needs a decent suit that will last me a while (to help me look my best the half a dozen times I wear a suit in a year), on a budget, Tom's place is a great find. Are the suits last years style? Sure, but we hold onto suits for way longer once we've purchased one, so what's a year or two if it saves you some serious bucks. For those that feel the story is cramped, well when are you visiting? I went during the week and there was next to no one other than staff on hand, and I felt I had plenty of room to move around. My suit was retail close to $800, Tom's had it marked at $450. Now I don't pretend that I don't know that Tom's likely got this suit for pennies on the dollar, and was why they, without asking, knocked another $100 off the price. Do I care? Not really, the suit is great, fit perfectly the moment I put it on and, well... $350?!! I got the suit on the main floor and my store associate, a woman whose name I don't recall, was very helpful and scoured the racks with me to find a few good options. We then went upstairs where one of the gentlemen there showed me some different shirt/tie/pocket square combos to put together to change the look of my black suit. Every item I ended up purchasing came with an automatic discount, I didn't really need to ask, so I assume it's just standard operating procedure for them to knock some bucks off. Made me wonder if I could have asked for more. At the end of the day I walked out of there with a full outfit for under $700 (including alterations). A real plus for me was despite their 7-10 day alteration turnaround time that they normally request, they went the extra mile for me and had it done in 48 hours (pants taken up and lapels needed to be repressed and flattened out). When I came to try them on, it was Margaret at the front who walked over, pulled up my jacked and said "something on these pants doesn't look right, take them off and I'll have the tailor redo them". This for me was a big plus and a sign of good old fashioned customer service - thank you! My ONLY critique was the woman who answered the phone when I phone in (as instructed) to check on the status of my alterations. She was extremely short and snippy on the phone and cut me off mid-question telling me they'd call me back when they knew more. It wasn't a big deal, but a more sensitive customer might take offense to the particular tone and approach she took. As I mentioned, save for the one minor blemish, my experience was hassle and pressure free and I got a good suit at a great price. Best of all, my lady told me I looked great when I suited up, and isn't that the most important point. Thanks Tom's Place, I'll be back for a grey and blue suit when the time comes :)

Tom's Place in Kensington Market is an institution: I suspect that every young Bay Streeter has paid Mr. Mihalek a visit, or attended one of his 'warehouse' sales at the Miles Nadal JCC or elsewhere on Bathurst. The place is a maze, with sales help hiding around corners and ready to help you navigate the racks. While the layout invites browsing the sales pitch can be aggressive and also focuses on the house brand rather than designer 'finds'. A fair chunk of the latter may be seconds or dead stock, but since it all just piles up like an episode of "Hoarders", Tom's could actually double as one of the better Vintage shops in the market. Much has been written about Tom's willingness to haggle, and it's true, but watch the sticker pricing on suits, shirts and ties. For widely available brands and can easily buy off the rack, you might do better at a department store sale. Still, Tom's is good theater, and a vital part of a neighborhood built on thrift. More importantly, customers leave happy, convinced they've scored a serious bargain.

So I am a guy, and a well dressed guy. I don't feel the need though to spend thousands of dollars though on a suit. This is why Tom's place is so special. There is a catch - not everything in Tom's is that great. So here is what you do....have enough spare time to flip through the racks and you just might find a great deal. 9 out of 10 times you will find a quality wool suit at a reasonable price. The sales guys will ensure that the suit fits you correctly (please make sure you get it fitted correctly, no one like a suit that makes your shoulders look like you should be playing football) which is great as most men do not know what size they really are. The suits range from $200 to $600. They also sell a wide variety of custom made shirts which will go perfectly with your new tailored suit. Toms is the perfect spot to buy your first suit, or second at an affordable price.

I had walked into a few suit shops that day to no avail. When I wasn't being completely ignored, I was being misunderstood, belittled, bedeviled, and befondled. (OK, maybe not the last one.) At last, I pedalled my way to the heart of Kensington and Tom's Place. It's a two-story affair filled with more suits than the York Street Keg on Thursday night. I was IMMEDIATELY asked if I need help upon walking in, and the salesman clued into my needs and budget just as quickly. Within a few short minutes I was trying on an affordable black Hugo Boss, and a few minutes after that, it was in my hot little hands, hemmed and all. Tom himself is on hand to discount every purchase with a gallant wave of his hand, and don't be afraid to ask for a discount. The cheaper suits line the first floor, and you can find more expensive options upstairs. Definitely a Kensington institution. Obligatory Title Pun: These suits are aTOMic! (What does this mean?) Menu Readability: Vat you say? Need to mention: There are thousands of suits here. It's out of control. What this place teaches me about myself: I hate suits and I hope I never have to buy one again.

Tom's place has a huge selection of suits. I went with my boyfriend today to take a look. The associate that was helping made us feel so pressured that we had to make up an excuse to leave. Even when we said we had to go, he tried to take us to another area of the store to keep looking. He asked where we would look elsewhere and when we told him Suit Supply in Yorkville he went on to bash the place and how it was nothing compared to Tom's Place. Additionally, the associate made no suggestions or offered any helpful information, he just told my boyfriend every suit he put on looked perfect to make a sale. My boyfriend and I felt very uncomfortable and as if we were on the employee's agenda. Very pushy and unprofessional. Also, there's no place to sit if you're waiting for someone to try on clothes.

Went in to shop the special deals and instead was continually given items that were 3 times the price and not on sale, even after showing the gentleman the advertised special on my phone. Very disappointing and not good practice. I knew what I wanted, how much I wanted to spend, mentioned and displayed the advertised specisl, and was not accommodated.

My 18 year-old son, Freddy, was born under the sign of the ram. I don't know what that means either but he is by far the most stubborn procrastinator in the household. I have broken a blood vessel or two screaming at him to get his driver's license, get his university applications in, take the crusty sheets off his bed to wash once and for all, et cetera. HIS PROM IS 5 DAYS AWAY AND HE STILL HASN'T GOTTEN A SUIT! This is a father's job for sure but the Ram Boy hasn't made any effort to make a shopping date with his dad on the weekend so I had to do it. I have zero interest in men's suits, even Don Draper doesn't appeal to me (although the real-life Hammaconda does). The only thing I know about men's suits are that I know when one is ugly. Freddy is tall and lean like his cousin who wears Gucci suits and custom shirts in "gay size" ie. skin tight. He lent him a Topman tuxedo jacket which looks dapper like Draper except he can't lift his arms more than 45 degrees. This is problematic in case they need to be scaling fences during the drunky-time after hours. However we did decide the "slim fit" suit is the answer for Freddy's slightly lanky physique. I spent the morning googling "where to buy a suit in Toronto" and got the blogTO list which of course had Tom's Place. I scrolled through all the comments from that site along with this one and got a mixed bag of "smells like sardines" and "pushy salespeople" along with great bargains, etc. IMO, it's worth the funky fish odour if you can get a suit for $250. So we made out way on Monday afternoon. I packed a flask and some charcuterie because I honestly didn't know how this would play out, it could take the whole afternoon. I could quite possibly die of boredom. We arrived and were greeted by a dude so ancient, he looked like he spent time with the original rat pack, smoking cigars and drinking whiskey while tap-dancing. But he did look sharp in his suit AND he cut right to the chase. We didn't want to pay more than $400, he pulled out a 38R jacket for $299 to try just for size and it fit perfectly. Freddy tried the pants on and that was that. The salesman suggested we have them hemmed at our local dry cleaner for convenience-sake. The whole transaction, from walking in to walking out, took less than 10 minutes and they gave us the whole suit for $200. Who could complain about that? Not Ram Boy. I didn't even get to crack the flask open, I couldn't help but thinking it would have been kind of cool if they had a lounge area for women so we could enjoy our salami platters just in case we wanted to make a day of it. Good times.

While the IDEA of Tom's Place is very appealing the execution leaves much to be desired. Let's break it down into functional chunks: Location: Great! Right in the heart of Kensington Market - convenient to TTC and lots of parking nearby. Ambiance: One has to imagine that the canned sardines of allegorical fame have more room to move around than either the suits or customers in this "before" poster for Fire Marshall training. It is C-R-O-W-D-E-D in here! Add some bad lighting and you get an interior shot of Tom's Place when you look up "ramshackle" in the on-line dictionary, Staff: Sigh. Pret-ty, pret-ty bad. Pretty much caricatures of pushy salesmen. The Suits: A mixed bag. Mostly "Moores" level of quality, a fair bit of mid-level dept. store stuff (Canadian Made!), a sprinkling of higher end material (from last season) and, of course, some pure crap. The "Deal": The X for 1 deal is a nice marketing ploy, but bears little semblance to actual street prices. Their goal is to sell at least 5 suits per customer and the suits are arranged so that you are pretty much compelled to select a couple of better, a couple of mid, and one or two pieces of junk. The "deal" prices tend to magically average out to $300 to $350 per suit. Always. You will invariably include one "Why the hell did I buy that?" suit in your deal, so use that to figure your average price. The Verdict: Meh. You can do better in Montreal and still get current season product or just drive down to Buffalo and save another 20-30%. If you have an empty suit closet (just starting out. weight gain/loss) you may pick up a reasonable package, but don't expect to be overwhelmed by the price quality access.

Close to perfect. Went to Harry Rosen, holt and renfrew, saks, Hudson Bay, strellson, brooks brothers. Couldn't believe the prices. What's the difference between a three thousand dollar tux and a thousand dollar one? None that justify the price difference. If you can buy the most inexpensive tux that looks good and feels good, do so. If you can buy an Italian made (Pal Zileri) tux, which also happened to be the most stylish and distinctive tux you've tried over the past two days, even better. If it costs less than nine hundred, super. If the salesman is knowledgeable and helpful, the selection and the service are superb, go to Tom's Place.

I am a graduate in need of suits. Unsure where to start, I went online and read some good things about this place. Went to purchase two suits. Picked up the suits two weeks later with agreed alterations done which was pricey $50-75 per suit. When I went to go pick it up and try on the suits, the pants were too tight and needed further alterations. The next set of alterations were done in less than 20 minutes and the work reflects it. Not a lot of care was done in the inside of the pants and it looks all mangled up. The tailoring job was very quick and it was meh in my opinion. They did a very rough job. Throughout the experience, the staff was very disorganized and at times unprofessional with their language. A lot of internal conflict among staff members and miscommunication. Not the greatest experience. Not the most expensive place to start but as a newbie who doesn't know where to start, maybe going to a more expensive but reliable place is better as they might be able to take better care of you.

Very welcoming, the team greets you right off the bat and makes sure you have someone to help find the perfect suit. Conscious of price range and size, they help guide you through various options, and the staff are well-educated about proper fit and work to find the perfect suit for each person. I've been here twice for suits and treated well each time. Would definitely recommend.

I hadn't planned on visiting, but I was in the area to have lunch with friends and one of them suggested checking it out when I mentioned I was looking for outfits for my groomsmen. There were a ton of staff just inside the entrance, but they seemed friendly enough, and directed me upstairs when I told them what I was looking for. A guy named Sasha ended up talking to me, and it was one of the most bizarre, one-sided conversations I've ever had. I explained what I was looking for (dress shirt & pants, tie) and my ideal budget ($100). He told me that I would need to spend at least twice that, and that I wouldn't find anything to fit my budget anywhere else. I initially appreciated his honesty, but he then proceeded to ramble on about his sales philosophy and expertise and a bunch of other stuff that seemed like he was trying to impress me and establish some kind of bro-rapport. As he continued to speak, I continued to lose interest, and it became clear that I would have to find my own way out of the "conversation". Later in the day, I found myself in the Bay, where they're having a great sale that will allow me to find what I'm looking for at a reasonable price. Sometimes when I'm in the bigger department stores, I can find it a little difficult finding a staff member to answer my questions, but I find that experience to be vastly preferable to having someone smother you with their smooth-talking.

Hey I read some of the other posts below but I had to check this out for myself. I'm originally from NY's Lower east side and had never been to Kensington Market till last weekend. I had told my brother n law that I wanted a new sports jacket and couldn't find anything that I liked in Moores. He told me to checkout Toms. I walked in and immediately felt like I was back at home on Orchard St. A huge selection in a somewhat cramped space. The staff were super friendly. The S.P. introduced himself and asked my name. Being in sales for years myself this impressed me. I immediately found more then 4 items that I liked, and ended up buying 2 and feel I got a good deal. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience there and highly recommend that you check it out for yourself. Hey ask for Lawrence he was a top notch nice guy to deal with.

I was super impressed by this place. Instead of trying to gouge me on price they were very honest about each suit's quality - including mentioning that unless I have several suits I shouldn't go too high on thread quality (which is inherently more expensive) because it will ware down easily. See my man Dez - old school dude who knows his stuff, is pretty entertaining (perhaps unintentionally) and was super patient while I deliberated over 5 different suits. Tom knocked off the tag price for a sale I didn't even know about and out of goodwill gave me a discount on tailoring because I'm a student. Solid mom and pop shop altogether and no obnoxious upselling or pandering. Tell them your price range when you walk through the door and they'll totally work with you.

I went there years ago. I liked the location, the staff, and even the owner came out to joke around. I don't wear suits for work anymore (thank God!) but now I'm looking for a casual sports jacket to go with jeans. I'm really thinking about driving the hour to shop there. They must have made an impression.

I've been going to Tom's place for almost 6 years now, and never had a bad experience. Went there today and it was just as I expected. Was immediately greeted by Patrick Duncan (he has helped me in the past), told him what I wanted, and within 10 minutes I was paying. Tom was very helpful on the price, and threw in a suit bag and a pair of funky socks. Turns out it was Duncan's Wife's birthday, and he was still at work. I hope he takes her out for a nice dinner. If you are looking for a good suit, at a good price I can't recommend a better place.

My uncle had recently bought a suit at Tom's Place and it was beautiful, so I thought I would look into it before my cousins wedding this month. I had read reviews on here prior to coming in this past weekend, so I had an idea of what to expect. We were greeted almost immediately upon coming in, which was nice, and although they were well staffed, it seemed to be quite busy in there. This was expected, as it was Saturday morning during the Kensington Jazz Festival. No sweat. We were looking for three suits for three different people, and they had a deal for the weekend that included 3 suits from the first floor for $1050 - sounded good enough to me. I have a few suits in my repertoire but nothing that was tailored or anything, so I figured it would be a good investment. It was no joke when you read reviews about their selection. Literally thousands of suits. I was measured up almost immediately, and had a suit to try in my hand within minutes. The first suit I tried was an all black DKNY slim fit. The salesman was adamant that this was good for a wedding, and that I shouldn't go for a pattern or anything like that. The price on the suit was $450. Although it fit alright, I wasn't really a fan of the material or the stitching. I was browsing the racks as I typically do, and found a beautiful grey plaid suit by S.Cohen, whom I've never heard of before, but later found out are a Canadian company. The jacket fit perfectly, and I loved the colour/pattern. I told the salesman I liked it, and he was kind of aloof, hinting that the black one might be better for the wedding. I told him I preferred the grey, which had a $650 price tag, so he showed me to a fitting room. The pants needed alterations for length/narrowing, but all things considered, it looked great. I couldn't help but think the reason the salesman wanted me to go with the black suit was because it was less expensive and therefore, there would have been more commission involved if the three suits for $1050 deal was applied. Either way, I found what I liked, and so did the guys that came with me. Tom came to finalize the prices, as he usually does (so I'm told). The price tag on the three suits were $650, $550 and $550, so it seemed like a pretty decent deal, although I know these were likely marked up a little bit. The alterations were $60, $60 and $30, so $150 total for the three suits. All in all, we walked out of there spending about $450 each after tax for three suits that we loved plus alterations, all from the first floor. I don't think our salesman, despite being well dressed, will be winning any awards anytime soon. He was a little bit short with us and didn't really engage us in conversation. He also tried to get one of us into a suit that wasn't included in the 3 for $1050 sale. I don't blame him for trying, but we were adamant that we wanted to stick with the suits on sale. Alterations for the three were quoted at being ready in about 10 days, which seemed reasonable. I probably shouldn't post any reviews until I see the work they've done with the alterations, so hopefully I don't have to edit my review. In conclusion, I would give a 5-star review for the selection, the service (tailor, greeting, etc) and the ambiance (Tom had live pianists playing from the jazz festival). The only reason I gave it 4 is because the salesman lost some marks for not developing rapport properly before making his pushy suggestions. I'm not one to be persuaded easily, so it didn't really bother me, but the guys I went with weren't as pleased. Hopefully my suit turns out as beautifully as I expect it to.

I went with family to buy a few suits we needed for an upcoming wedding. Found a great one for myself and paid 450 for it, we bought an additional 3 for the rest of my family so i guess they gave us a good discount for the bunch. But mine definitely required work on the jacket and pants to make them more fitting. I got that done at my own tailor for $140. The one thing i found uncomfortable was that the salesmen stick to you like glue, and while one was really helpful, the other one just wanted to make a quick sale and got sassy in the end when he lost the sale.

I work in the area, so after checking great reviews about Tom's place I went to check it out. May be there is another one in different dimension, but the one I visited did not come even close to my expectations... First, the place stinks like fish factory, and considering location and a smell of the suite you are going to wear, prices are not even close to what I was hoping to see (small sizes $200-400, 40+ will go from 650 to 1200+(decent quality)), from what I checked in 20 min. The day before that, i went to Moore's and same suite but labeled with different designer was $250 cheaper, next day I went to Vaughn Mills Mall, and in Holt Renfrew last call store you can get beautiful suite for close price that they offer but this one will not stink... total waste of time for me. p.s. get a mask if you still want to check it out...

Don't believe the negative B.S. you read here on Yelp. There's no way Tom's Place should ever get a poor review. I was dissuaded from going there after reading some of these reviews. BUT, Tom's Place is fantastic!! My uncle took me there to buy a suit for my university graduation ceremony. I ended up getting a high-quality Michael Kors suit for $350 (incl'd tax). THEN, I went again this week to buy a suit for my new job. The salesman was very HELPFUL (not pushy). He was patient while I tried on a number of different suits. He even introduced me to Tom, the owner so I could get a good deal. I walked out with a navy blue Ted Baker suit for a great price. It was listed at $599, I got it for $335 with a tie. Tom's Place is awesome. I went to Got Style. It's way too expensive. I'm a recent grad so I didn't want to spend too much. But I didn't need to. Tom's Place is great. I promised David, a salesman there that I;d write a good review because the views I read before going were too discouraging.

I purchased a suit from here not too long ago and at this point, I must agree with the majority of the reviews here. They are very pushy. I felt like I was being pressured to buy a suit I didn't like and I felt very uncomfortable throughout the whole process. I will not recommend this place. CUSTOMER SERVICE (1/5) There was this one lady, she was quite tall and a dark blondish hair that was hanging out by the front (I believe her name is Anett). Simply put, she was the rudest person I've ever met in my life. After meeting her, I am certain that I will never go back nor will I ever recommend this place. She just stood there yelling things out and answering out of turn when I didn't even ask her the question to begin with. It was very bothersome. For instance, I asked the sales person that was helping me with my suit how long alterations usually take, and she was about to answer when that tall lady from the front yells at me (cutting both of us off): "1 week and that's the fastest we will do it!". That really upset me. As for the sales lady that so-called "helped me", she looked terrified and desperate throughout the whole process as if her life depended on this next sale. She had NO KNOWLEDGE of suits. She knew absolutely nothing about suits (or clothes in general), NOTHING! I felt like I was talking to a brick wall, she was in her own little world. I didn't like my suit and kept on voicing this out to her, but she kept on PUSHING AND PUSHING AND PUSHING AND PUSHING, even recruiting fellow sales people to chime in to help further pressure you into just obliging. I honestly have SERIOUS BUYER'S REMORSE, and I have nothing good to say about this place. I am not happy with the suit at all, in fact, I HATE IT. It was just a very uncomfortable experience overall. PRICE (3/5, seems average, but not sure yet, I will get the suit checked by a second tailor) Price wise, I told them my budget, but like I said, they were very pushy, pressuring and overbearing. It was like the whole store was surveilling and judging me the minute I walked in. After having half the store bombard me with statements that I must go up to the next level of price point to even make it worthwhile, I felt a little forced to go to the "next level". The sales person kept on reassuring me throughout the whole process: "oh don't worry, we will make the price work for you". Well, turns out they didn't "make it work" for me. I feel like the prices are artificially raised so that they can "give you a discount". So at this point, I'm not sure how good this suit is. I was told it was half canvassed and made in Canada, but I couldn't find the tags anywhere. I will be taking it to a second tailor to get it looked at once I get it back because, to be honest, I feel like I got ripped off at this point (went $300 above budget). NB: I'm getting it tailored (by them; they seemed upset when I asked if I could just take it to my tailor), so I will come back to update the experience as I go. I will be changing the rating as I go along, depending on the experience. But so far, I am confident that I will never be going back to shop there again, and I will let my friends know (who all need suits right now; 2 of which have weddings coming up at the end of the year), not to go here, ever.

I went to Tom's Place II with big expectations and left with huge disappointment. Earlier this afternoon (Easter Sunday) I went over to Tom's Place II at the International Centre in Mississauga. Upon entering the store I was greeted by a Sales Rep named John. I told him I was looking for a Sports Jacket in size 48T and we went over to look at the offerings. To my surprise, there was only one jacket in my size.... Disappointment #1 I suggested that we look at some suits and John took me to a rack of suits that were mid-priced, suggesting it was a good starting point and we could upscale or downscale from here. I thought that sounded reasonable. There were 18 suits on the rack designated 48T. I found one I liked so I tried on the jacket. Sure enough it was the wrong size (someone put it back in the wrong spot), so John took it from me and went around the display to put it back in its proper spot while I continued to look at the offerings. Not a moment later I was approached from the back side by another Sales Rep. I kindly excused him by saying I was working with someone else when he replied "I was sent over to assist you. I am more capable of giving you PROFESSIONAL service".... WTF? Just then John returned from the opposite side and looked bewildered. The "PROFESSIONAL" then walked over to John and whispered something to which he replied "well what am I even here for then"? I looked up and he was clearly angered and embarassed as was I. The manager then spoke out and said "I sent him over but he got it wrong".... Hmmm I guess this place isn't for me. I decided to leave and said very clearly to everyone involved that the situation that just occurred was completely unnecessary and unacceptable. Disappointment #2 As I drive towards home I feel compelled to contact the store and voice my opinion to the Manager directly. I called and asked for the Manager and "Videl" introduced himself. I explained who I was and why I was calling. Videl explained that he wanted to speak with me, however he was too busy to talk to me right now and asked for my name and number , promising to call back when he was available. About an hour later Videl called. I wanted to explain my view of what happened, however he was not interested in listening. Rather he interjected and told me what happened through his eyes. He agreed that the sales person was wrong, that he was not professional and in fact intimated that John was not professional. He admitted that the entire situation was mishandled but it was because John was unfamiliar with the store. Not getting to voice my opinions irritated me further. I did make some comments about how I perceived things and laid the blame clearly on poor management. 1) Not having a good selection of product and sizes 2) Not preparing staff on store layout 3) Directing a second salesman to interfere with a customer interacting with a salesman. Videl got defensive and when I asked "do you think I am wrong here"? He said YES partially.... in 9 months we have never had a complaint"!!! WHAT?? That makes me partially wrong?? I said OK... Thank you. We are done. Sorry EPIC FAILURE

Horrible pushy sales staff. Very insistent and condescending. Prices are exorbitant.

Uncle Tom's 55th birthday sale - 2 pants for $ 55! Today, I went to check it out. What I experienced was the old Bait & Switch technique. During the search for the right size, the indifferent, tired old salesman informed me, that I have to take the pants somewhere else for alteration, for they do no have a tailor. Since he could not find size 36 black pants on the rack, he took me to another room. I tried on 2 suitable pants. We went to the cashier where I was told, that these 2 pants were selling half price, $ 90 for both.( I told him twice, that I only care for the 2 for $ 55 birthday deal.) I left disappointed - seems like Tom's is running a stylish shyster business.

I was sold a suit that is not worth what I paid and wasn't tailored the way they said it would be. On top of this, they don't do refunds. I asked for slim fitting suit and told that the one I had chosen would be tailored to fit. I returned to collect it after it had allegedly been tailored, took it home and wasn't happy with the fit. I took it back and they said they would tailor it again. I collected it one more time and it still didn't fit. Just to add to the hilarity, the guy said he'd re-tailor the pants free of charge, even though he had already charged me for it the first time! I was also spoken to as if I was dim. Now I am hundreds of dollars out of pocket with a suit that doesn't fit me. Do not buy a suit from this place.

I've been a few times, bargain hunting, and some of those have been awkward because of the sales style they employ, but I've successfully found some good quality and reasonably priced pieces. If you go in uninformed and are a bit meek, I'm sure you could end up with a not so good experience, so some advice based on my own: 1. Know what you're doing and looking for when you go in. Bring someone with you if possible. It's a high pressure sales environment, having someone skeptical by your side as a second pair of eyes can help. 2. Don't buy the first time. Get out of there and think about it. Check the price elsewhere. OMG the pressure sometimes. 3. Tom and his son appear to knock the price down a bit as a matter of form, but if they don't offer make sure you ask. For that matter, don't buy when Tom Sr. isn't around, he appears to be the chief discounter. 4. Know what you're looking for and be particular with your alterations. Their tailors act quickly and know what they're doing, but default to a traditional fit. If you want a traditional fit, that's quick and easy, otherwise no... 5. Don't even look at accessories. They appear to be like popcorn at a movie theatre. Maybe I'm just spoiled by internet prices, but I can't bring myself to pay $50 for a pocket square. 6. Don't expect to find the latest stuff. Parts of the store are a time machine. You can make it work, but you have to know what you're doing.

It happens often. Poor unsuspecting guys don't know much about what to wear and so they're informed. What occurs next borders on abuse and extortion. The people working here don't mean to do it, they're well-intentioned but this is habit now. I don't doubt there are a few gems who are well-informed and can give you space (an older gentleman upstairs had this good sense). But to be fair they're fighting a market that is outpacing them while situated, effectively, where few that don't already know about them would ever go to buy a suit. So from the minute you walk in the door you are prey. Salespeople will lunge at you at every corner (and there are many corners). I'm not their usual customer, which seem to consist of stubborn regulars and the naive. I am well-informed and know my suits, I can say that confidently. I found the store to be in complete disarray. Forget the fact that it's packed to the brim, there's no logic behind where anything is kept. When a salesperson shows you where your sizes are, they then lurk. Waiting for you to show the slightest interest and then tell you how great it is. It's not great. If you do get a good find it will be in the thousands. At that price you can get a great made-to-measure or a decent designer suit. Tom himself may be offering discounts 'if you ask', but how much will he really knock off when the very average garments are so overpriced? A lot of Harry Rosen stores suffer a lot of the same issues, particularly with salespeople. These dinosaur stores need to get with it because their customers are getting savvier. Keep looking, it's not worth the trek to Kensington Market, don't let the nostalgia fool you.

The sales staff are all trained in 30 year old psychology tricks to make you think you're getting a good deal and make you feel more invested in the process than you actually are. I wouldn't call them pushy (and they seem to vary widely) but some of them are downright rude. For a place that boasts 10'000 suits they present preciously few actual options on top of which, everything takes forever to fetch. They do have a large selection and they do seem to have a lot at lower price points so maybe if you're on a tight budget you'd fare better here than elsewhere. But if you're looking to get a good suit you can almost certainly do better with a department store and a good tailor or one of the cheaper made-to-order places.

Tom's Place is not a journey, it's a destination. I've been going there for years now and the store has gone through a lot of changes since the early days. There's two parts to Tom's Place, the bargain stuff and the good stuff. Now that's not to say the bargain stuff isn't good. Often times it's very good especially if you don't mind a cheaper suit. The salesmen are hit and miss. Some know their stuff, some are a little less able but they all seem willing to help you find what you need. The good stuff you're going to pay for but here's the secret. It's going to be a LOT cheaper than if you go to Harry Rosen. The same suit can cost you twice or even three times more at Harry's. Then at the end of it all you're cashed out by Tom himself who makes every final sale personal. Typically he'll knock some off the price and if you buy enough he'll throw in a shirt or two for free on top of the discount he gave you on everything else. The only suits I buy are from Tom's Place and I've never had a bad experience there.

I came in here looking for some new jacket. I was greeted right away as soon as I opened the door, before I could even take out my headphones. Good thing my blood pressure isn't high, it was a bit startling. The gentleman showed me some merchandise and described some of the items to me. Personally, I would rather shop at my own pace and I think after a while he realized that and left me to browse on my own. Some might consider that good service but for me it wasn't. The garments were nice, but nothing stood out to me to justify the high price tags.

I am a large and tall man. After an airline lost my luggage, I was referred to Tom's on the outside chance Tom's would have a suit in my size. Tom introduced himself at the door, heard my sad tale, guessed my size, and handed me off to Sid. Sid immediately found two suits that were closely sized off the rack. Knowing I needed the suits for the next two days, Tom arranged to have the alterations done in the next few hours, and he gave me a nice discount. I picked up the altered suits at about 4:30 in the afternoon. And, did I mention this was a Sunday afternoon? Tom's Place is great. Excellent staff. Unbelievable selection.

Horrible customer service!!! I actually had a staff member snatch a shirt out of my hands I was going to try on, after I had already bought a bunch of things. I can understand wanting to have staff around to try things on, but instead of acting professional and explaining that, this guy got in my face and rudely pointed out this wasn't Walmart (I was with someone else as well) and yanked the shirt right out of my hands. It was the single worst customer service I have every experienced.

I'm not a guy, so typically I don't go out searching for deals on suits, but because of its long history in Kensington market, I decided to check out Tom's place. As far as I can tell, this old school suit-mart has amazing deals. A lot of the stuff is crapola but like any other bargain shop, you just have to bring out your inner blood-hound and give the place a good hunt. The well-attired staff is knowledgeable, polite, and a little pushy, exactly what one might expect in a mom and pop (or maybe just pop) shop like this.
