Marugo

"Working with his predecessor, the owner-chef has over a quarter of a century of experience. He chooses his pork not on brand but on quality, tenderness and the sweetness of the fat. The tonkatsu of pork loin and tenderloin is pale in hue. Deep-fried slowly at a low temperature, the aroma of the coating draws out the meat umami even more. Inheriting the teachings of his mentor, he carefully controls the heat as he cooks. It’s no wonder diners have been coming regularly since he opened." - Michelin Inspector

After a long day of shopping in Akihabara, Tonkatsu Marugo is the ideal cozy spot to refuel just off the bustling main streets. This restaurant offers comforting, homemade katsu set meals ranging from $10-$15—perfectly satisfying without breaking the bank. The breading on the katsu isn’t greasy, letting the flavors shine through, and the side of cabbage salad is refreshing, cleansing your palate between bites. The miso soup has a delicious, homemade quality that makes the meal even better. The staff was incredibly friendly and patient, accommodating our group by moving us to a private booth once it became available without us even needing to ask. Plus, they have an English menu, making it easy to order. I’d highly recommend Tonkatsu Marugo for anyone looking to relax and enjoy great food after a busy day in Akihabara. The atmosphere is wonderful, and the food is absolutely on point. Instagram mayhanna_eats

You had a long day in akihabara shopping for toys figurine keychains pokemon anime stuff and all that. Walked down a dark alley and saw a queue surprisingly. Google it up. And think is it that good? Its just fried cutlet heh. No smell no hint of whatsoever is inside but you just go with the crowd. Stand in the cold until youre inside. Seated in front of the kitchen and you think are these simple thing you see worth the food and wait? The 4 or 5 masters proved me wrong. Or us. This one of the best cutlet i had. The premium cut even better. Take that huge chunk into your mouth. Stuff it with cabbage and dressing. And some sauce and let your tongue do some work while you're chewing. Simply amazing. Id come back here the next time im in tokyo or akihabara

4.5. Ordered assorted katsu. The pork fillet and shrimp are fresh and solid. A great main. The pickle and miso is good addition. (The orange tartar sauce matches with the shrimp very well) Great atmosphere, staffs, clean and a comfortable place to seat and eat. Given the queueing time and the price, need to be 1 star off.

Google
This is my 2nd visit. Arrive at 10:30am, not bad just wait for 30mins we have seats. Ordered the recommended one, fried cutlet is good but bottom is wet... I guess its because they didn't wait enough time before cutting it (for this price I didn't expected..). Shrimp is a must try, awesome lucky I ordered two. To me its bit disappointed as I feel the quality drop compare to few years ago, and you don't need to order the expensive set (they don't have this few years ago also), I doubt the standard one maybe better and wiser to order coz it have everything.

Google
Solid tonkatsu, solid ambience, solid service. I just don't understand how this place built up so much hype, cause that line is ridiculous. It seems like Americans, Koreans, Chinese all know about this place and get in the queue. I made it right before they cut off the line and placed a sign after me indicating the end of the line. They have two floors of seating, with a couple of tables upstairs for bigger groups.

We went here 45 minutes before opening on a weekday and we were 3rd in line. A few minutes later, people started arriving already and by the time they opened at 11:30am, line was already so long. We got to sit upstairs and the servers there were very nice and attentive. They gave us the English menu, and even recommended what to order. They could speak a bit of English, which helped a lot during our visit since they also explained how to eat the meal & salad. It was my brother’s 2nd time here so he knew what to order. He got the prime cut loin while I got the prime cut fillet (no fat). We also ordered the prawns, which I personally enjoyed more. The prawns were so meaty and the perfect texture. So good!!! I also prefer the loin over the fillet but the prawns were the winner for me. Miso soup was so good (it had mushrooms) and the salad was good too. You could get 1 refill of rice & salad for free. When we finished a bit past 12, the line outside was still long. Best to go really early to get a table during the first seating.

Google
Hands down the best tonkatsu I had in Japan! It's a nice thick cutlet with the right amount of breading. The meat is juicy and cooked perfectly. The tonkatsu sauce had the right amount of acidity which goes perfectly with the fattiness of the meat. Service was great, staff is friendly and I liked the atmosphere. Nothing to complain! Would recommend it and go back as soon as I'm back in Japan.

Google
Not bad for a fried cutlet, but they don’t put on the wire mash as you dined The bottom part of the cutlet becomes mushy. Have tried better ones. But the prawns is very good. Sauce a little too sour I feel. Rice is good. Salad dressing no taste. That’s just my opinion. But price is good

Yelp
Lines are long here! The restaurant is not terribly large but does have a second floor. The table we sat at had 6 seats but could be kinda cramped if all 6 showed up. We waited about 30-45 minutes or so before we got seated. We ordered the deluxe tonkatsu sets and we also added the extra meat / shrimp set. I thought it was tasty. The deluxe meat is very very thick. I like smaller thinner slices of meat so I had to tear them apart. The batter is lightly fried and the meat was very juicy. I didn't have a ton of sauce options though - I don't really like tonkatsu sauce in general so I was just eating the pork mostly plain. The salad dressing was also tasty, some sort of orange dressing. The red miso soup was absolutely delicious - it was a lot stronger than regular white miso soup. The green tea that was served was also great. They also served us what we thought was pu er tea afterwards.

Yelp
Visited: Dec 1, 2018 We were prepared to wait and we were not disappointed - a healthy 90 minute wait to get inside and another 20-30 minutes for the food to arrive. It was a Saturday and dinner time so enough said. The quality of the pork and prawns that we ordered was out of this world. The pork melts in your mouth and the prawn tastes so fresh it was sublime. With the combo, we get 1 refill of rice and salad. There were pickled vegetables (3 types if I remembered correctly) and they were tasty and great condiments to your rice. The red miso soup was interesting - a tad salty so that wasn't my favourite. The service was attentive, they don't speak English but understand if you just want more tea or refills of the rice and salad. We sat with another couple and they ordered 4 entrees and thought they were crazy. In the end, we wished we did the same as we were still hungry afterwards. The meat portions are not as large as we'd like to be. Ordered: Breaded Pork Medallion Cutlet Set Breaded Prawns Set

Yelp
Out of all the tonkatsu places, Marugo is probably the best quality tonkatsu I ever had. I got the pork medallion set meal, which comes with red miso soup, salad, pickled cucumbers and rice. The meat quality stood out as it is super tender and juicy. The miso soup is a little different, as it is much denser and richer in flavor. The katsu sauce is on the table, so you would pour to your tasting. My only complaint is that the bottom of the tonkatsu got soggy due to the oil soaking onto the paper sheet. I guess I'm just Americanized where I care more about well rounded rather than the meat. Came here on a weekday ~30mins before opening. There was already a long line waiting, and overall I waited about 1 hour before getting seated. They're not the most efficient when it comes seating people, but I liked it that way (Rather then stuffing as many people as they can in one small enclosed area) They are somewhat foreigner friendly, with English menu available that is descriptive about the place and what they serve (Unlike the other places where its just pictures) It is a little on the pricier side for food in Japan but still average priced in comparison to food in USA. Overall, I would recommend this place to other but as a tourist, I probably would not come back here again.

Yelp
Pretty decent tonkatsu but having tried many other places, I really couldn't tell why this was better or why it was Michelin Bib Gourmand worthy. I mean don't get me wrong it was really good and much better than your average tonkatsu but it made me wonder ... Waited in line for dinner at this two story shop. The wait was long so fortunately there were no weather issues, but I could imagine if it were in the heat of summer or biting cold of winter. They seem to serve a limited amount of pork katsu each day because whilst waiting in line, someone would come out periodically and did a head count. Eventually, he came out with a sign and placed it in the back of the line indicating that they were sold out. We went with both the premium pork medalion cutlet and premium pork loin cutlet. Not sure what makes it a premium over the other "regular" of the same cuts. Perhaps it was more fatty? Our cutlets were a bit more fatty than the many other tonkatsu places we've enjoyed around Japan, so maybe that's what makes it "premium"? I suppose you could just enjoy the katsu by itself but you'll need to fork out another few bucks, I mean Yen, more for a "set meal" of miso soup and endless bowls of rice. There was abit of a wait for the dishes because the place was completely packed. It was almost torture watching the people around us enjoy their food as we just sat there waiting. I suppose one can nibble at the complimentary pickled scallions or omeboshi -- pucker up those lips. Overall, a great place and better than than your average tonkatsu restaurant, so a recommendation is in order to give it a try!

Yelp
Definitely worth the wait based off the food alone. Waited about 30 minutes at 12:45 pm on a Thursday afternoon with about 12-15 ppl in line. 2 levels inside with upstairs for groups and downstairs for diners at the bar. Everything from the food to the condiments and service were great. I can easily see why Marugo was named on Tokyo's Michelin guide. Quite easily the best tonkatsu that I've had. Pork was very very moist and didn't really need the sauce but the sauce only enhanced the flavors. The breading was super flakey/light on the premium medallion cutlet at $2,100 yen and extra 450 for the set that includes rice, miso soup and cabbage salad. Very reasonable prices for the quality of food and taste. I would definitely come back when I re-visit Tokyo.

Yelp
It's only fitting to have eaten the best tonkatsu in Japan, or anything Japanese for that matter. Featured in Tokyo's Michelin Guide 2016, Takayoshi Takeuchi's mastery of the "low temperature frying" technique has garnered quite the followers Marugo has to date, both locals and tourists. Now, don't let the line outside deter you because I promise you the wait is worthwhile. I say go with the Set Menu, that's what we did. It includes a bowl of rice, red miso soup, and pickles. And if you want a second bowl of rice or extra cabbage, just say - "Okawari kudasai!" TONKATSU (¥2,100) -- I got the pork medallions vs. the pork loin cutlet as I wanted the convenience of eating each piece dipped in different sauces (tonkatsu sauce, no sauce, or just a squirt of lemon and some salt). If you ask what I prefer, it's hard to pick. I enjoyed them all individually because the fact of the matter is, the tonkatsu itself is golden - literally! The breading was outstanding while the meat inside was marvelously melt-in-your-mouth good. It's unreal! Anyway you eat it, the taste remains superb. Their house tonkatsu sauce deserves a shout out. I love how it's so well-balanced with the tartness and sweetness that it doesn't mask the beautiful pork, if anything, it elevates it in new heights. The red miso soup is rather unique with a bolder and heartier taste profile compared to what we're accustomed to. I dig it, a lot! As for the cabbage, it just works in this meal, period. Knock yourself out with the orange colored dressing on the table. Heck, even the rice is a mastery. Okawari Kudasai, for sure! CHICKEN-KATSU (¥1,450) -- I try to avoid poultry if I can being both a carnivore and a seafood aficionado. After having a piece of the breaded white meat, I gave myself a second to stop and enjoy the moment of pure bliss. Did they just kill a chicken at the back and fry it? It's tender, juicy, and nothing like the chicken here in the States. If there's such thing as an A5 Miyazaki chicken, this would be it. Like anywhere in Japan, customer service is beyond amazing whether you are in a McDonald's or a fine dining establishment. And the craziest part? There's no tipping! I'm blown away that up to this day, I'm still reminiscing about the heavenly meal I had here.

Yelp
Let me start off the review with the wait-time. The wait is worth it... I got there on a Thursday 4:30pm and I was the first in line. After 4:32 it was packed, check out the photos! It will be packed and be packed throughout the night. However it does move fast!! There's a lot of singles in lines and less parties. There's also one open table meaning you will be sharing a table upstairs, don't be shy, you will get the 100% phenomenal service. the Tonkatsu was tender, juicy and just the perfect chew. I ordered the premium cut and wow, I should've ordered two! it's so watery and so much flavor after just one bite. I didn't taste any extra batter, it was just the right amount! Once you're seated, I advise you to place your order asap (20mins to cook!). Again, once you're seated you should already know what you want.. otherwise you'll just become hangry waiting. The manager will pass the menu while you're waiting outside so be on a look out or just ask for the menu( I posted photos of the main menu ). Let me know if you have more questions. I would go back here!

Yelp
Went there last month during the Sakura festivities. We got in approx. 12:30 and was lucky enough to be the last ones in for lunch; 1:30 is the last order taken. The wait was worth it we had the 2 Tonkatsu combos and also the shrimp combo. This was the most tender and tastiest pork loin is ever had. It was not greasy and the have their own katsu sauce that I put on everything. The Tonkatsu takes about 20 minutes so we had we had some appetizers but it was good also. Since we were the last ones in the chef and waitresses were really nice and friendly. I will probably come back again

Yelp
Juiciest tonkatsu I've had in Japan thus far. Off the bat, I would suggest getting here at 1130am due to the likelihood of there being a line with last call being 2pm. Food: Like I've suggested, this will most likely be the juiciest tonkatsu you'll ever had. I opted to get the set meal which consisted of a cabbage salad with a side mini salad dressed in a vinaigrette. You also get one bowl of rice and side of red miso soup. Price point is around 2000 - 2500 yen. Service: Like most Japanese restaurant this a essentially a quick service restaurant with the servers being the cooks as well. English menu is available but the amount of options won't get you held up looking at the menu. Ambiance: Small intimate restaurant about 20 seater restaurant. Find it difficult to just walk-in with a big group which will prompt you to make a reservation. Very relaxing place but it's not a lounging restaurant as you should finish your meal and just get out to be respectful to the people that are also waiting in line outside. Recommendation: Definitely worth checking out if you got the time and don't mind the wait. Its really good place to dine in on the occasion, however, you will definitely want to avoid this if you are coming here just to satisfy your stomach.

Yelp
No doubt this is one of the best to katsu place ever. The meat is so perfectly crusted and it doesn't feel oily. The shrimps are huge and tender. You can add as much sauce as you want and eat as much marinated scallions also. We tried the side dishes: the red miso soup has a nice taste but was a bit too salty. The pork stew came in a cold jelly and was delicious with the mustard. The beef tongue was very tender and flavorful. Everything was so good. The service was quick and the staff was super friendly. They speak relatively good english and it's easy to communicate. The place had a nice ambiance and is located near the center of akihabara. This place is a must if you visit tokyo.

Yelp
Marvelous pork katsu. Y'all, if you're in Tokyo and like pork katsu this place is where you have to go. Everything was great, EVERYTHING.
google avatar

Bowen J.

Yelp
The definition of juicy and tender katsu. Lives up to the hype. Very cozy and warm restaurant at outskirt of Akihabara. Went at 11:33 am on a Saturday and got seated at about 12:15. The pork is incredibly soft inside a lightly crisped batter. Comes with rice, green and jasmine tea, pickles, salad, and red miso soup. Total about $20. Tips: don't pour the Japanese katsu sauce over the entire plate. It makes the meat soggy very quickly. Instead, pour it over one piece at a time and eat immediately or use it as a dipping sauce. I unfortunately poured it over the whole dish and within 3-5 mins, the crispy batter became soggy

Yelp
This is the best tonkatsu I've had. Great spot with a friendly staff, lots of choices on the menu, but most importantly the food was amazing. We loved the katsu and the miso, and we're planning on dragging friends back here as soon as we get the chance. Take a look through the menu in the pictures already posted, there is plenty of English too.
google avatar

Yelp
Best Tonkatsu I've ever had. The sauce comes on the side on the table so it doesn't get soggy. The pork was lean and tender. Next time I would try the fattier pork. CASH ONLY

Yelp
Waited over half an hour before the evening opening at 5pm. Was not alone.:) Order the premium medallion cutlet and spinach salad. Tea is included. The fried pork cutlet was indeed tender, juicy and tasty. Worth the wait!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I arrived here around 12:30pm on a Sunday and had to wait about 40 minutes in line outside. Unfortunately for us, it was raining pretty hard, but after seeing that no one else was getting out of line, we decided it was probably worth the wait. We went in hungry and with high expectations and we were not disappointed. This quality of tonkatsu is impossible to find in California. We ordered two types of premium tonkatsu (medallion 2100 yen and loin 1850 yen) and added a set menu (450 yen each) with consisted of rice, picked vegetables, and red miso soup. The non premium tonkatsu includes the set menu without the additional charge but if you've already travelled to Japan and waited in line in the rain, just go premium. The loin is a fattier cut of meat and both our favorite. Both cuts were so tender and cooked perfectly. The breading is delicious too without feeling heavy. The tontaksu is served with some cabbage, lettuce, a slice of tomato and shredded shiso leaves which gave the salad a very refreshing taste. We also ordered a side of miso beef tongue, which I would skip. It wasn't anything special. You start the meal with a warm towel and green tea and end your meal with some black tea. The restaurant is two floors and probably seats about 30 people max. When we left at 2pm, there was no line so maybe it's best to have a late lunch here. There is a clean bathroom on the first floor behind the register. This place is cash only and you pay right before you exit with an order receipt they put on your table.

Yelp
Marugo is an exceptional tonkatsu restaurant located in Akihabara. I visited Marugo for an early dinner (arrived at around 5:15pm) on a Sunday evening with a group of three, and we queued in line for about 30 minutes before being seated. Note that the line moves reasonably fast especially because there are two floors of seating. We sat at the bar seats and were able to watch the chefs work their magic at producing one of the best tonkatsu dishes I've ever eaten. I ordered the ¥2100 hire-katsu set meal, which came with four huge tonkatsu pieces, a miso soup, a side of rice, and pickled vegetables. The tonkatsu was absolutely amazing - the pork was perfectly cooked: texture was firm, yet moist and juicy. The tonkatsu was coated with a layer of rich breading that accompanied the flavor of the pork very well. The sauce was great and only helped in adding to the umami of the tonkatsu. Very friendly and efficient service to go with a fabulous meal. Highly recommended!

Yelp
CASH ONLY!!!! Make sure you get CASH before you come to this place, because the ATMs or places to exchange money are kind of far away. We learned from our first hand experience, since my husband went to go get cash while i stood in line. There will definitely be a line, and make sure you get to the restaurant at least 45 minutes before it closes because they start cutting the line off in anticipation of when they will close. The tonkatsu sauce and tonkatsu is AMAZING. The pork medallion set meal was pretty good which came with soup, salad, pickled cucumbers and rice. The meat was oh so good and tender and juicy! The batter was light and crispy and just so mouth watering!

Yelp
cash only. English menu available. line up by 11:20am and u should be fine. i got there an hour early and there was nobody there. you could get away with arriving at 11am and still be first in line. the place has two floors, but has limited seating. the first floor has counter seating for six people and three tables for two...so only 12 can be seated on the first floor. once seated, you'll be given the standard oshibori (aka hot wet towel) to wash your hands and you'll also be served some hot green tea. it takes like 15-20 minutes for the orders to be processed, so be patient. i ordered the pork medallion tonkatsu set (aka hirekatsu teishoku) for 2100 yen. the portion was a bit small and only had like four pieces. still, the quality was awesome and the pork was very juicy. the breading was kinda falling apart from the pork, but it was still delicious. the set menu came with a generous portion of rice, a shredded cabbage salad (with what seemed like carrot ginger dressing), a few slices of pickles, and a bowl of red miso soup (which was similar to the Korean doenjang jjigae). overall, the food quality was great and service was impeccable. once you're nearly done with the meal, you'll be served some jasmine tea as a palate cleanser to end your meal. once you're done, you just stand up and pay at the cashier. overall, the experience was great for high quality tonkatsu. however, if you're on a budget or have a big appetite, i'm sure you can easily find a cheaper place with bigger portions. however, i'd recommend a visit to see how high quality tonkatsu is made and to enjoy a more refined version of tonkatsu.

Yelp
I'm not one to say positive things easily. But Marugo was awesome. In fact, it was one of my favourite meals in Japan mainly because of the size of the restaurant, the great staff and of course the delicious pork. As other people have said here, go light on the sauce so that the batter remains crispy. Also, be aware that the bottom of the tonkatsu goes soggy as well if you leave it there too long. I suppose you could eat it really quickly or just flip it! Prices here are high. But I think if you appreciate good food and want to try tonkatsu, you have to come here. I lined up for 5 minutes.
google avatar

Jenny L.

Yelp
Good. Everything was well prepared. They owners take you jackets and make sure your comfortable. My boyfriend and I weren't amazed by anything but it was very good. The pork tonkatsu was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. We particularly liked the salad that it came along with. Would recommend this as a meal to try in Japan.
google avatar

Dominic C.

Yelp
There are long lines on weekends so try a weekday for shorter lines. Last order is at 2pm for lunch so don't sleep in. Even if you're in line, your out of luck when it hits 2pm. The pork has good marbling and is very juicy. The tonkatsu sauce is pretty good but my favorite is the pickled onions. One of the best tokatsu in Tokyo. Definitely worth the wait in line. Crispy with a good clean porky flavor.

Yelp
Marugo's tonkatsu is juicy, tender, and amazing. Maybe you need a break from the chaos of Akihabara and want to wander the streets outside that are more quiet. I came here on a Thursday at around noon and waited outside. Do not be deterred by seeing the line outside, but the wait for me was about 15-25 minutes to get a seat for one at the bar. The Japanese menu is in front of you, but with my limited Japanese and ability to communicate and a slightly confused face, I was given an English menu. FOOD: I got the combination with the medallion cut. Yes, ~$20 combo, which is pricier for the food in Tokyo. I highly recommend it though with the rice, jasmine tea, red miso soup, and tonkatsu. The red miso soup was delicious as it's more full bodied than your regular white miso soup. The tonkatsu was delicious as Marugo has this slow deep frying process. I am unsure how they do it, but it comes out not super brown (too hot), rather golden (perfect temperature). Upon eating into each medallion, you can first taste the crunchiness of the panko come through, and then bite into the pork, which comes into this soft and moist piece. Then the tonkatsu sauce hits you with a nice saltiness to wrap it all up. Michelin recommended for sure and I can see why. I have never had tonkatsu taste this crisp, moist, and ultimately, delicious before. I saw that B J. previously stated about pouring the katsu sauce. The sauce is available to your left when you sit and only pour it on one medallion at a time. By pouring it on each one, it'll become soggy and you'll miss out on the crunchiness! Don't pour too much either or else you'll miss out on the light seasoning of the crusty panko! CASH ONLY!

Yelp
Best Tonkatsu place I've ever had by far, although my experience is limited to those in the states. The Pork was the star of the show and surprisingly juicy, which I haven't seen at other places due to the frying process sucking up moisture. The batter was light and crispy, and the Tonkatsu sauce (which was on the side in a small container) had a nice sharp taste to it. On top on that, all of the sides were excellently prepared as well: the salad was fresh and you could put as much dressing ad you wanted on it, the red miso soup had a deeper soy saucey taste to it than normal soups which wad a nice change of pace, and the little pickled shallots (came in a side container) were so addictive that we nearly cleaned out the container that it was in. This place probably ruined Tonkatsu for me, but what can you do...

Yelp
This Pork cutlet restaurant is on the Michelin Guide 2016. I came here Wednesday am11:45 and waited for 25 minutes. There is the counter for 6 people and 2 tables for 2 person each here. I ordered HIRE cutlet set. HIRE cutlets were so juicy, thick and delicious! There are 4 pieces of cutlets, and I enjoyed eating each piece with salt, Lemmon , plane and sauce. Th taste of sauce is strong, so I don't think we need to pour much sauce. It costs 2,100yen. I'd like to come back and take loin cutlet. Please note that the menu is Japanese and only cash is acceptable.

Yelp
Marugo Tonkatsu was worth an hour wait . Very small restaurant with limited seating so get there right at 5 pm if you want to get a chance to eat here. Every delicious bite into to this Pork was lightly battered laced so delicate and fresh . We ordered the medallions and loin both fabulous.. order medallions if your on a juicy filet fat free diet however the loin is has flavor from its savory fatBoth were winners! Order from the Ala carte because the meats are of better grade rather than the teishoku . It's worth the upgrade ! You can add your rice, tea , miso soup and tskemono for a small fee. Spinach Salad was divine and fresh to the tongue. GPS was not right us in circles.. ask for directions.. it's noted well ! A must stop!

Yelp
Found it by chance and it was the best tonkatsu we have eaten! The atmosphere is really calm and authentic, they have been doing the same for more than 50 years! We had to wait in line for 20 minutes but it was totally worth it! We'll come back!

Yelp
A cozy little place with great food. We had the tempura prawns and ginger steak. Both perfectly cooked. The staff were very friendly the food came out very quickly. It was raining when we were there so we had given them our umbrellas at the door. When it was time to leave, we had noticed that one of our umbrellas had been given to one of the other customers who had left earlier. The owner felt so bad he gave us his umbrella. He insisted. A kind gesture deserves a great review (the food alone was worth it). Gotta send more tourists (or locals) their way!

Yelp
We were starving, it was late, and they were open. This was a quick and easy choice. The steak dishes were fine, the settings comfortable, and our server was very kind. Hunger abated, we moved on -- thank you, Marugo!

Yelp
It's no wonder this place is Michelin rated! This was easily the best tonkatsu my husband or I ever had! (For reference, he was born in Tokyo and I eat out a lot.) We ordered the two house specials (2100 JPY meat + 450 JPY set meal and the 1900 JPY meat + 450 JPY set meal). The first cut came out with 2 large portions that included both dark and light meat (see pictures) and the second cut included all dark tenderloin medallions. Both were cooked to perfection and perfectly breaded/fried without tasting too oily or heavy. Both set meals came with cabbage salad, soup, rice, pickled veggies, and tea. Free refills upon request, but we were too full from the first plating to ask for more. Delicious pickled onions, sauce, and white sesame seeds were available on every table. Make sure you get there as close to opening time as possible. My husband and I joined the line just after 7pm and within a few minutes the manager came out and counted those of us already in line and then place a little stool behind us that had a sign stating that the line ended there and no additions would be accepted. It took us about 30 minutes to be seated and another 30-45 mins to get our food.

Yelp
It's essentially a textbook version of Tonkatsu! We waited out of the restaurant for less than an hour to get seated but it was definitely worth the wait. The crispy outside complimented the juicy inside. If you want to go to a Michelin rated Tonkatsu place then this is your spot!

Yelp
Great little place! We arrived at 1130 and there was already a line of people waiting outside. The wait was not long, approx 30 mins. The staff spoke minimal English but enough to order without issues. The food was made right in front of you if were able to sit at the bar. Food came with soup, green tea, black tea, rice, salad, and of course the tonkatsu. This little resto is definitely a must go to if you are in the area.

Yelp
Hands down the best katsu I've ever had in my life. We got there just in time before it opened because when we looked behind us, the lone wrapped around the block. My boyfriend and I we're one of the first to get seated. We started off with some miso soup which was really good btw. Then the entree came! Premium pork cutlet katsu laid on a bed of nicely cut cabbage drizzled in their house special sauce. The pork was SO juicy. The ones I've had before was always so dry but man oh man, this place made me want to move to Japan lol. TRY THIS PLACE WHEN YOH EVER GET A CHANCE! And come early! Like 10:15 ish.

Yelp
What an amazing restaurant, impossible to say anything bad about it. The food was amazing and the entire staff were so cool and friendly. If you are here this is the place to eat. Yes it's small, not trendy or pretentious but that's what makes it great!

Yelp
Ordered the chicken katsu as my friend ordered the Pork katsu. Both were juicy on the inside and crunchy on the outside pretty much like Japan quality. It is a god sign that the staff and cooks are all Japanese making Japanese foods. Great selection of rice and miso soup. Service is friendly with a smile. Would come again and early since the lines are ridiculously long.

Yelp
Life changing porky. Definitely worth the wait which was almost 30 min. I got the premium pork with rice. The meat was so moist and tasty. Adding the sauce that was provided made the meat tasty even more hella bombin

Yelp
I think I only waited around 15-20 minutes because I came closer to 2PM, but I really don't think that this place was worth lining up for. The queue was full of Japanese people so I think I must have done something right. I got the rosu set but I really liked Maisen's so much better. I also liked Maisen's sauce better. The pork to rice ratio was also very off, because I ended up with way too much rice at the end and so I used their condiments (ume and garlic) to accompany the rest of my rice. I really did like my server lady though. She gave me both matcha and jasmine tea, which I thought was really nice of her. Overall, if you're in the area I suppose it is convenient to go. But otherwise, I would just go to Maisen instead.

Yelp
November 2017 Came here due to the claims of serving the best tonkatsu people have had. Went on a weekday afternoon and waited in line for quite a bit. As recommended I got both the hirekatsu and rosukatsu teishoku. The teishoku (set meal) will come with a bowl of rice, cabbage/salad, and red miso soup, which you may refill once. Hirekatsu: Four perfectly fried slices of pork tenderloins coated in a golden crust. Ate one without anything and the rest with the housemade tonkatsu sauce. Both were ways tasty, but stuck with the sauce to be able to eat more rice. Rosukatsu: Again, five perfectly fried slices of pork loin coated in a golden crust. Ate it the exact same way as the hirekatsu. I would recommend the hirekatsu over this. Housemade Tonkatsu Sauce: I enjoyed this sauce. Not as overbearing as the store bought Bull-Dog (tonkatsu) Sauce, it compliments the katsu without distracting from its flavor. As recommended by others, be sure to pour the sauce on directly before eating a cut of katsu to preserve its texture. Housemade Dressing: A great addition to eat with your cabbage/salad. Not overly sweet with a good hint of flavors. Doesn't over saturate your taste buds before taking another bite of katsu. Red Miso Soup: Was fine. Service: Although I maxed out my refills on cabbage/salad and rice, they were kind enough to service me with another helping of cabbage. Conclusion: Great tonkatsu and great employees. Best tonkatsu I've had, but not enough for me wait in line for. Would I go back? Maybe to guide tonkatsu connoisseurs who. somehow. have yet come here. I didn't find the katsus tantalizing enough to endure the wait in line during another visit. Do I recommend this place? For a one-time visit, yes.

Yelp
Honestly the best pork katsu I've ever had. I was doubtful at first since I've always had solid katsu, pretty good, but never though katsu could be outstanding.. just seemed like one of those foods with minor variability in enjoyment. But actually, this katsu was amazing. One of my most memorable meals in Tokyo for sure. Also, we came exactly when it opened (I think on a weekday too) so there wasn't a wait!!

Yelp
This place was on every single website for tonkatsu (pork cutlet) recommendation. The price was on a little high side and there was quite a long line, but the food was worth all that. But if you are on budget and have a big appetite, you might want to consider different places.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in Tokyo! They don't have a lot of seating, so be prepared to wait. They specialize in katsu, and it's a family-owned establishment that has been perfecting their craft for years. I don't remember if they have an English menu (my Japanese friend helped us translate), but get the tonkatsu and you won't be disappointed! (They have a lean version and a fattier version - we opted for the fattier version since it was cheaper) They also have a shrimp version that looked good as well! The tonkatsu comes with a huge piece of katsu, cabbage salad, pickled vegetables, rice, and soup. It also comes with a sauce for the katsu, and a delicious salad dressing. The tonkatsu was amazing! Very juicy despite the thickness, and not too oily. And everything right down to the rice tasted delicious. And of course, the service was very friendly and attentive. Would definitely recommend if you're visiting Tokyo!
