Tony Di Maggio’s Pizza Expands in San Jose With More Stromboli | Eater SF

"A 42-year-old stromboli destination has expanded with a second downtown San Jose location at 155 W. San Fernando Street, taking over the former Pizza Chicago space which now has new floors and a new bar. It serves Tony Di’s familiar menu of pizzas, stromboli, pastas, Italian subs, and cannoli. The stromboli comprises ham, sausage, salami, mustard, and cheese wrapped in buttery dough with tomato sauce spooned on top or on the side." - Janelle Bitker

Google
Amazing little mom 'n pop. Get the stromboli, if you haven't already heard it's famous. All the atmosphere you could ever want in a hole in the wall family run pizza joint.

Corinna H.

Google
The meatball sandwich is amazing here..... the menu has lots of fresh choices and variety to choose from. Great parking and prices. Amazing vibes and people. I dont live anywhere nearby but I have driven over 2 hours to get a meal. If I go to or through San Jose im stopping in to buy food.

Tony Di Maggio's is one of my all time favorites in San Jose. I've been enjoying their stromboli my entire life. The staff is friendly and their stromboli is delicious. You need to try the stromboli. Do it today. Share with friends or eat it all by yourself I dont care I just think you should try it.

Dan A.

Google
First time eating here. Ordered their famous stromboli and it was very good. I will definitely eat here again. It's an old family restaurant. It could use some updating, but it was still clean.

Alex R.

Google
Heard they just re-opened after a roof fire. Couldn’t believe it I haven’t ever been here!? Oh was I missing out. The cheese pizza was just an added bonus because I actually came in for their Stromboli. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Google
We had stromboli and combination pizza today. It's was very fresh, flavorful and hot. Service was excellent as usual. Restaraunt was clean and organized.

Google
Always delicious. The flavors haven’t changed in years and it’s magnificent. Family operated and super authentic. We split a large Stromboli and each had a salad n soda, and lunch was less than 40 bucks. I’ve been here several times and am glad it’s stayed open thru these years. No fuss, straight forward and delicious.

Google
Great little Italian restaurant located in South San Jose off of Monterrey Road. Best known for their Stromboli, this place serves traditional New York style Italian cuisine. I had the 8 inch meatball sandwich with cheese. The meatballs were light and flavorful and there was plenty of cheese and marinara sauce placed on top. My mom had the Rigatoni with meat sauce complimented with a side of garlic bread. Pasta was cooked to perfection. I will definitely be coming here in the future, and will be sure to try the Stromboli.

Yelp
College buddies and I used to come here in the 90's for Stromboli and beer. Glad to see DiMaggio's is still open and the Stromboli is as good as ever. Inflation is alive and well though. I got charged $12 for a pint of beer. The profit margin on beer and wine is pretty significant but $12 for a glass of beer in an old Italian restaurant with no table service is ridiculous. I took my son here for nostalgia but I'll think twice about ordering any drinks next time.

Yelp
An absolute favorite for my hubs. Cheese, meat, and mustard all folded into a little Stromboli made with love! (Mustard, I know! But don't knock it until you try it!) We used to order one after catching a movie at the drive in-makes for a perfect family night out or date night! The owners are amazing and very kind! Parking available and lots of seating indoors. Give This place a try!

Yelp
Tried Tony Di Maggio's for the first time. Food On the table, there are small condiment jars of red pepper and parmesan cheese. When I asked for a side of ranch, I was told it was an extra $2.00. The menu didn't list any prices, which made ordering a bit awkward since we weren't sure what the total cost would be. Medium Combination Pizza The combo pizza had a nice balance of toppings with a perfectly crisp crust, sliced mushrooms, green bell peppers, and cheese. Large 14" Stromboli The Stromboli was huge, served on a pizza pan, and pizza spatula that is stuffed with ham, cheese, and topped with marinara sauce. Everything came out hot and fresh. Surprisingly, between the two, the combination pizza had more seasoning and flavor. Customer Service I tried to flag down an employee to ask for napkins and he completely ignored me - terrible customer service. However, he was mingling with another table. When he saw a $10 tip was left on the table after my dining experience, he quickly rushed over to greet me goodbye and grab the tip. Please coach and train your staff to provide better service. Took off an additional star because of this experience. Ambiance Old-fashioned pizza spot filled with photos and memorabilia honoring the owners and local sports teams. There are 4-6 seat table tops inside and a few baby high chairs. The only downside while dining in, there were occasional gusts of cigarette smoke that made the experience unpleasant. Location Located in the El Rancho Center strip plaza with Kent's Hair & Nails, A&L Spa, and Planet Vape.

Yelp
STRICT VEGETARIANS: read to the end. Excellent home-style restaurant that hits the spot! I'm usually a fan of deep-dish/pan, but the pizza here -- despite being close to NY style crust (which I usually dislike) -- was delicious: thanks to fresh veggie toppings, sweetish sauce and a stringy melted cheese in the right ratios. Each slice is so weighed down with toppings that you need to eat the bottom of each slice with a fork and knife first (difficult to carry without it falling apart!) - you can lift a slice only after finishing the bottom half. The rigatoni and garlic bread were delicious, but I did see some morsels of sausage in my sauce, despite having ordered fully vegetarian. Maybe the pan they prepare it in wasn't fully clean. So, strict vegetarians - beware! Docking two stars for this. Service was speedy and with a smile. What a joy to see the legendary grandma out in the kitchen too :-) I'd definitely come again, but advise the owners to ensure they start with a fresh pan on vegetarian orders of pasta - or they risk losing customers. Meat cross-contamination, in this day and age, isn't very common at restaurants in this category - so this was disappointing. Otherwise, this would've been a 5-star visit.

Yelp
Yes, they reopened! I love their stromboli, offered in both medium and large sizes. Pictured is the medium. I also like their pizza and pasta.
google avatar

Helene L.

Yelp
The stromboli could have had some shrooms, olives and spinach to it. Not much on the inside. It was okay but I would get the smaller one next time. And don't get the salad if you don't want to pay $8 for a plate of iceberg.

Lovre S.

Yelp
Quick services, food was amazing and plenty of room to sit. Love that it's family owned!

Yelp
Holey moley GET THE STROMBOLI!!!! Order a large and save the rest for later. lol Great mom and pop shop. Stromboli was delicious and made with quality. Thank you!

Yelp
Sorry. I know they were out of commission for a year but we tried this old favorite years later. It was not memorable. I wanted to like it. Trust me. It's a cashier service meaning you order at the front and they bring it to you. The red flag was no hard menus just a board with no prices. I didn't want to ruin the moment so a small individual Stromboli (they are known for it) and large two topping. 45 + 10 tip (hey no waiters here...) so $55. See pics. Both tomato sauces were light not rich and robust of before. The crusts on both were really good but the sausage - I mean store bought and cut Jimmy Dean. Shame on yall. The cheese melted weird and it was just an average pie at best. Stromboli was eh. Homemade ham and cheese hot pocket. Hate to beat up a local favorite but had to call them out. The manager/owner was cool but didn't seem to want to be there. Wanted to like this place but moving on....

Yelp
I've been coming to Tony DiMaggio's for over 30 years, and the experience has been consistently exceptional. The food is outstanding every single visit, authentic, flavorful, and clearly made with pride. The service is truly unmatched; the family behind this establishment delivers a level of hospitality and care that you simply can't find anywhere else. The warm, welcoming ambience makes you feel right at home and perfectly captures the charm of this long-standing San Jose gem. Tony DiMaggio's is a rare place where tradition, quality, and genuine customer service come together flawlessly. Highly recommended for anyone looking for unforgettable food and a true neighborhood treasure.

Applebottom B.

Yelp
Service was quick, pricing was ok, the ambience is mellow but it has an authentic feel to the restaurant. Mid size dining room. I ordered garlic bread and Stromboli pricing came out to $21 which is fair. The garlic bread tastes of only garlic which makes sense lol ... but it could use some kind of herbs. The Stromboli itself was mid.. nothing that stood out flavorwise.

Yelp
It's back!! Love these guys. They're the only place I've found anywhere that makes this style of Stromboli. So glad to have you back!
google avatar

Flower R.

Yelp
Tony's is back! Reopened last Friday after being closed for almost a year after a fire. We couldn't make it out last Friday, but we picked up our pizza and Stromboli to go today. As usual great service and everything we loved about it is still there, down to the pictures on the walls. I missed the Stromboli, my favorite dish from Tony D's and I probably had more than I should have. The pizza, the sauce, everything is so good. Glad your back. No picture to share this time, since we pretty much fell on it and it disappeared.
google avatar

Chris O.

Yelp
Best stombolis in town for over 30 yrs. Sicilian not Italian. Grandma's still making the sauce. This is an old school place not for the trendy more for the locals.
google avatar

Anna-Marie C.

Yelp
Really enjoyed going back to Tony Di Maggio's. I decided to order stuffed shells with ricotta cheese, delicious except 3 noodles! I walked out hungry. So next time I'll order with a meatball and a Stromboli, that should do it. The garlic bread is outstanding. Will definitely return
google avatar

Berta J.

Yelp
Service: cashier was awful. She was short and rude with her words. I asked if they could not add the ham to the "famous" Stromboli's that i was spending $80 for 3 on and she was annoyed by my question. It was written all over her face. Food: the Stromboli's they are made the night before(according to the rude cashier they are prepared previously so modifying is impossible)so you cannot add or subtract any ingredients. The Stromboli's have NO MEAT, too much cheese and mid at beast dough around all that cheese. If you don't consume the whole thing right away, you're left with a hard piece of cheese bread. Not how I remember when I was younger. SMH.

James R.

Yelp
Always get the Stromboli, it is great. Ordered the large meatball sandwich, worst attempt at a meatball I've ever seen ! $20 bucks it consisted of maybe three small meatballs of gray meat with a minuscule spatter of sauce on a roll. That's it, Dry AF ! No cheese or flavor. Unbelievable, the pic is only half the sandwich, fed the other half to the Dog.

Sam F.

Yelp
We bgan coming here when we moved to CA in 1973. We loved this place and the stromboli WAS the best. We no longer live in San jose and last weekend drove down to the area and stopped by for a stromboli. THEY HAVE GONE DOWNHILL the strombolis were soo skimpy, 1 slice of ham and hardly any sausage. In addition, the wonderful sauce momma used to make there tasted watered down and horrible. Idk what happened but for $25.00 a stromboli, totally not worth it anymore. Sad..... will not be stopping by on our drive anymore.
google avatar

E L.

Yelp
So happy to see them re-open after the fire. This place is a San Jose staple and the neighborhood and city just wouldn't be the same without them. The stromboli is my go to. Never disappoints and has always had plenty of meat in it. The old school vibe at Tony D's hasn't changed since I was a kid and that's what I love about the place. Great food, Great people and a great come back story. Highly recommended if you haven't tried it you should.

Ken L.

Yelp
Ordered the infamous "Stromboli" (large) Didn't have any meat. Basically cheese bread? With a dipping sauce? Outrageous pricing for $25+ Stop skimping..
google avatar

Howard B.

Yelp
I called yesterday and they are scheduled to reopen on Saturday!!! I miss the Stromboli!

Yelp
Why didn't I find this place sooner! I gave up on finding a good pizza in Nor Cal years ago as being from the East Coast can't find anything that can stack up to the best. Between the teenagers and myself we didn't leave a crumb. The crust, the sauce, the texture makes this my only pizza place going forward. One word of CAUTION, they put mustard in the Stromboli . That didn't fare well with any of us. It's such a shame you can't customize your order as the sections without mustard were indescribably perfect. Plenty of tables seating 4-6 comfortably inside
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
Haven't come here in a while. The workers here are nice and friendly. The first thing you do when you come in is order your food and pay then go seat down at a table or take out. The food here are delicious. Their Stromboli is very good and flavorful with a lot of red sauce on top. I love how they make their spaghetti. The spaghetti is perfect with their large meet balls. The meat balls cost extra though. The spaghetti plate is big and I took it home. They even give free garlic bread. The restaurant is kind of small with limited seating. Located of this restaurant is not the safest at night.

Yelp
Still closed due to a fire last month :-( hope they reopen soon!!! We love Tony D Maggio's.

Yelp

Yelp
We've ordered take out from here several times. And we've never had any complaints. The food is beyond amazing! Always well seasoned, tastes fresh, and delicious! We've ordered the spaghetti and meatballs which was a super hit. The pizza has never disappointed.

Yelp
If you live in the South Bay, and never been to Tony Di Maggio's Pizza, you are missing out! Tony's has been around for over 45 years, and as one of the staff members mentioned, their Nonna is still there making the Stromboli by hand! If there's one thing you come for it's the Stromboli, which comes in small and large sizes. A small is plenty for a regular appetite and large is great for sharing. I got a regular and it was under $11, which is a steal in todays world. I was in the area and on Yelp searching for something eat. I picked a place, got on Monterey Rd and realized Tony's was down the block, so I detoured and went to go get a Stromboli. The dough was crunchy, the cheese was oozing out, and it tasted like it was made with a lot of love. Stromboli is often imitated but this one is never duplicated. I've had Stromboli in other places, and this is the one I keep coming back to. #1 on my power rankings! They were doing some construction so I couldn't eat there. If you do come, eating there is the way to go. Because they'll serve the Stromboli topped with the marinara sauce and the way it's supposed to be eaten. Getting it to go, it's still good, but if you can EAT IT THERE

Joe Z.

Yelp
Closed I called many times Disconnected phone # I heard it was the Best I hope it opens again ! I Pray for the Family

Yelp
We didn't try their famous stromboli, this review is only for the pizza. It was a good pizza, but it's def not NY pizza. We ordered the Tony's combo (small), dining room remains closed so we ate right outside the parking lot. The pizza was still piping hot, the toppings were descent and I have no complaint about the cheese. The pie was thin but the bottom was not crispy like La Bellezza, nor was it soft and doughy like Lil' Frankie's at East Village. There were no burnt blisters on the edges that typified an old fashion NY wood oven pizza. We also ordered a side of meatball, it was tender and the sauce was classic home made Italian delish. Overall the food here were descent albeit overpriced, $23 for small pizza and $5.25 for one single meatball. We have yet to discover a legit NY style pizza establishment in the Bay area.
google avatar

Yelp
This feels like your family owned Italian spot with solid everything. You order at the counter, and if you're dining in you go find a seat. Feels like a lot of their business is takeout, but they have seating for large parties (we were 9 people). We went after some of my boxing teammates fought, and we had an awesome meal. I would say that the sizes here are standard / err on the generous side. Toppings are definitely generous, and the dough that they use is good. You can't go wrong with anything you order honestly. Would return for the Stromboli
google avatar

Ana C.

Yelp
I've had this spot about 3 times. All three times were very satisfying. Mind you these were three separate times during covid and it was take out. Good amount of parking available. We love getting the Stromboli. It's filled with this mustard like sauce, ham, sausage, pepperoni, and cheese! Comes with a side of piping hot marinara as well! I love that the food is still hot and fresh when I bring it home. I'm about a 13 minute drive from the location. There's a drive in theater near by & it's a good dinner to pick up to watch a movie. (little tedious because marinara but it's good Stromboli so it's worth the struggle) Maybe just have some plates, utensils & napkins ready, not sure if Tony DiMaggios offers them but it's a good way to spend a date night!
google avatar

Yelp
**TAKE OUT EXPERIENCE** Called Tony's to put in an order for the Niners vs Saints game today :) Ordering was a breeze. Parking was easy. My order was ready when I arrived. Mom and pop/family ran, authentic Italian restaurant vibes, if you catch my drift. I was also in and out in a jiffy! By the time we ate the food at home, everything was still nice and hot. Food Ordered - Stromboli (5/5) - The hype is real! Yummy, cheesy dish with a very generous amount of marinara packaged on the side for us to pour on top. Meatball (5/5) - Everything you want in a meatball! Hearty and flavorful. Again, drenched that delicious marinara. Half Tony's Combo & Half All Meat Pizza - (5/5) Great pizza! They do not skimp on the meat or cheese! My first time ordering from Tony's was excellent! I will be back very soon :)

Yelp
This review is for my dad's visit. My dad brought home some pizza from this place. He waited ~20 minutes for the pizza. I think he ordered the large. Portions are huge!! Bigger than Costco! Although it was like close to $30 for the pizza. It did have a lot of toppings! My dad got jalapeños, pepperoni, salami, and Italian sausage. It was kinda greasy, perhaps a little too greasy because when I grabbed the pizza, the cheese and toppings was slowly sliding off. Oh no!!! Gotta eat it taco style while holding the thin slice pizza. Overall, good flavor and very satisfying after about 3 slices. Two slices was enough for my dad. I'm not a fan of the crust tho. Meh. I'd come back to try some of their other offerings as well.

Pumpkin P.

Yelp
Came here with my nephew after a show, did not really know what to order, but they were nice. It is family own business. We ordered rigatoni and pizza (pineapple, mushroom and chicken). I know, pineapple on pizza, but my nephew likes it. The pizza was good. The cheese pull was awesome! The dough and everything was perfect except towards the center it was kind too thin that everything falls apart. Not soggy taste though. The bread that came with rigatoni was good. The bread was crunchy outside and soft inside. It does not kill your teeth. Got parking and a lot of tables inside to enjoy the food while it fresh out the oven.

Yelp
If you want the real deal family pizza joint, this is the spot. They are known for the Stromboli and they deliver! Cooked to perfection with an amazing sauce, it is delicious. The service here is like going to your favorite Aunt's house. Also got the Italian sausage sandwich and it is legit too. Remember, it's a joint so don't expect modern, just expect great food and service.

Ree R.

Yelp
Tony Di Maggio's is truly one of the best places in San Jose and they have the best stromboli in the world! Stopped by today since we are craving their stromboli and was so sad to see it closed up. Please come back soon. We appreciate you & miss you!
google avatar

Diego R.

Yelp
This is our first time ordering from Tony Di Maggio's and I didn't tell my family. Just wanted to hear their responses after the first bite. I ordered a large pepperoni and Italian sausage. The family said the crust was rubbery. I thought it was too hard. I was hoping to find another favorite pizza place.

Lisa J.

Yelp
The best - hands down. This establishment is owned, and excellent every time. Support local businesses.
google avatar

Vanessa P.

Yelp
The only place I'll go to for stromboli! Delicious food, generous portions and amazing service ! Love the staff here! We always have the best time here and we've been coming for 18 years. Whether you're eating here or taking it to go to the drive inns, the flavor is always on point! Pro tip if you're eating it at the drive inns, simply dip your stromboli into the mouth watering, homemade tomato sauce like a French dip sandwich, take a bite and repeat .
google avatar

Carlos O.

Yelp
we travel from Sacramento this morning, my wife had stranboli for the first time, she love it. I started going to this delicious place back in 1979 when it first open, 40 years later the place has not change, the food is awesome delicious, it was worth the 3 hr drive. customers for life. Thank you we enjoy our selfs. Happy holidays
google avatar

Lori R.

Yelp
Well, I started writing a review just missing this place that seemed so fair away. Then my noyfriend said he was heading down to San Jose and would pick up 4 Strombolis. I waited all day and could not wait for this beautiful baby with lots of sauce. We sat on our balcony and went in on our long-awaited Stromboli. Sauce was very similar, but the filling was less. A lot less than usual. It's not as good as before. Lot of pizza dough. Maybe saving $$$ and they are not putting as much. Disappointing and there was hardly anyone there.
google avatar

Kelly B.

Yelp
I have been coming here for 20 years. The Stromboli is what keeps me coming back. It's piping hot when they serve it to you, the sauce pairs perfectly with it, the meats and cheese and high quality, and the dough is crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. You really can't go wrong. You can't customize your Stromboli order because they assemble them ahead of time, but anything you don't like you can just eat around. You need to try one of you haven't!!!
google avatar

Elijah J.

Yelp
Hands down best Stromboli out there! Love this family and what they have created. I've been going here for years and the quality has never changed. The Stromboli is second to none. Also the pizza is exquisite. Great job
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
First time my family ate here was 25 yrs ago. I ate two strombolis (1 at lunch with work friends and a 2nd at dinner with my wife). We've been eating them ever sense. Moved away in 2002 but always visit Di Maggio's when we're in town! Best strombolis I've ever had!

Sandra G.

Yelp
Not permanently closed. Hope to see them re opened soon. Great, quirky, family pizzeria serving Stromboli the way it was meant to be...with mustard...Sicilian style.
google avatar

Yelp
Classic Southern Italian Sauce ! Best mom and pop spaghetti in South San Jose at reasonable price
google avatar

Jarold C.

Yelp
Been going here over 15 years and still as good as it was back then. If it ain't broke don't try to fix it. Great food and great customer service.
google avatar

Reina C.

Yelp
First time coming here and has very high hopes for this place based on reviews. Average at best. I had the Stromboli which is what they're known for. For pizza, half Pepperoni, and half chicken and garlic. I also had the spaghetti. Someone reviewed this saying that this was like their aunt's cooking. I would have to disagree. With many pizza places in the Bay Area, I won't be back. Spaghetti was the same marinara sauce that they give you for the Stromboli as a dip. I can't seem to fathom why this has good ratings. My only guess is because this place has been around for a while so they know the owners and have built a loyal following.
