My first time here and I was super excited because so many people were telling me to try Tony G's for great southern food. It's been awhile since I've had southern food so I was definitely going to give them a try. I ordered the fried catfish with fries and mac n cheese. I also got cornbread with my meal.
Fried catfish was good, but nothing that impressed me. Nice cornmeal coating on it, very crunchy and crispy, but also flaky and moist. It was nicely fried, but I've had better seasoned catfish where condiments were not necessary. They gave me tartar sauce and I had to use it because their hot suace condiment that was on my table was empty. But I had to use a condiment because the catfish by itself seemed bland. I wasn't impressed with the cornbread or mac n cheese. It was very basic for me as if it was the result of anyone attempting to cook southern food at home without growing up eating southern food. Cornbread was made in muffin tins to give it that crispy crust that is expected from cornbread being made in an cast iron pan. But the portion size seemed small for being made in muffin tins, maybe they used mini muffin tins. It was crumbly, but it wasn't dry either. It was basic. Same with the mac n cheese. Corkscrew pastas were used, but the flavor didn't impressed me. It wasn't gooey or cheesey, it was baked, but I felt like it was a basic bakedac n cheese recipe that anyone can make ar home. It wasn't bad, noodles were cooked nicely, but I have had better. Fries were good, but basic. Definitely not homemade, sort of feels like frozen Checker's fries, which I like.
Service was great up. I was there with a friend and we talked a lot so our server was filling up our water whenever we were out. Very friendly. After we paid, we stayed to chat some more and never saw our server again. Our cups were empty, but she literally never came back afterwards. She was great and attentive up until that point. Not a big deal though as we flagged another staff for refills. Ambiance was darker than I expected, but with some semi-fancy look. The plates were colorful which made for a more homey feel, but the table booths had a fancy backrest which seemed like a weird combination to have. I would have love for more lighting, but it wasn't too bad.
Would I recommend this place, I'm not too sure. I would have to check other southern places and compare before I recommend this place. Would I come back, it's more likely a yes than a no because I do want to try their other menu items.
