The Best Mall Restaurants in the San Francisco-Bay Area | Eater SF

"Ah, the Stanford Shopping Center, where the tech elite love to belly up to the makeup bar at Neiman Marcus, Labradoodles in tow. If you’re not grabbing a salad at True Food Kitchen or a cupcake at Sprinkles, a Stanford student lunch of choice, another underrated option is Tootsies at the Stanford Barn — technically closer to the mall than the horses. Owner Rocco Scordella is originally from Puglia, and his breakfasts and lunches range from Nutella croissants to chicken panino. Either is great with a cappuccino." - Lauren Saria

After posting my review I recd a snarky reply from the owner. I am just sharing my experience. The snarky reply didn't help. The owners feedback is quite disappointing. And, you are right, we will not be returning. CIAO! It's close by Stanford Hospital, which is by some outpatient medical clinic, I believe. There's a restaurant next to it, like a wine tasting place. The place is hard to find. Parking is limited. There's an inside and outside seating areas, but limited space. You order your food, and they'll bring it to your table. Sandwich and salad is around $15+. It's kinda a self-service place. You get your own water. No one will ck on you. Yogurt with granola is the only thing I liked on the menu for $10+. Their muffins are "healthy." This place is mostly salad and quick bite to eat sandwiches. If you don't want to go far, this would be the place.

Food was pretty good, area was nice, service could have been better.

Google
It's a small restaurant with a couple of tables inside and most of the tables outside, which is where we sat for lunch today. We had the Tuna Panino made with Tuna, capers, radishes with arugula and hard boiled egg. The Pollone is organic chicken breast, endive slaw. capers, onions over a ciabatta roll. Both were very tasty and the chicken breast was very tender and moist. We also ordered some plain croissants and bombolini to go. We ate one of the bomolinis at the restaurant and it was really good!

Google
Delicious well-made food. A casual plave to order lunch or breakfast at the counter and have your food or maybe espresso drink brought to a table inside or outside amidst the blooming lavender. The food is authentic but fresh California-Italian hot sandwiches and salads. I enjoy the porchetta sandwich with small side of green salad and the fried chicken sandwich, and every time a properly made cappuccino. The staff are gentle, service-oriented, considerate and friendly. I’ve been going here for 10 years and always look forward to a stop when I’m on the peninsula. There is ample parking. A nice place to meet friends and have some space. Occasionally the pleasantness is brought down by medical staff who think it’s a great place for a conference call.

Google
Nice place to get a latte and croissant on a cool November morning. Lattes are $4, mocha are $5 for single shot. They have plain croissants, Nutella, croissants, almond croissants, and a cream croissant.

Google
So glad I stumbled across this gem today! William (cashier) was extremely patient, accommodating, and helpful. We ordered a porchetta sandwich, side of fries, double espresso, burger, and scone. Everything we had was delicious - the porchetta was one of the best sandwiches I’ve had. There isn’t a dedicated kids menu from what I saw, but they provided a high chair and most kids survive off fries, so we were fine. Parking is in a private lot and an easy walk from LPCH or Stanford shopping center. The weather was perfect for their patio dining, and staff were prompt to bring our food and clear tables.

Google
The seating and atmosphere was nice! But the food was bland, no salt.. Tasted ok after requesting some salt. Maybe my expectation was really high.. Until food came out it was all good..

Google
Review in only for the lavender field. Now is the lavender blooming season, you can see and smell the lavender. Be aware of the bees around the garden.

Yelp
I stopped by today on my lunch break and really enjoyed my lunch here! My coworkers recommended the burger and fries and they were good! I really liked the fries, and the burger is partly veal so it has a unique flavor. The cashier was super nice and they brought my food out quickly. The quality was really good! Tootsie's is fast casual and there is outdoor seating, and you can also sit under the tent at the Italian restaurant next door. Overall, I'm a fan!

Yelp
I love Tootsie's because their food and service are consistent. Ambiance: clean and casual Service: warm, efficient and consistent exceptional Food: Italian inspired with California influences. My favorites: pollone with chips, porchetta with salad, tuna salad = well seasoned and cooked to perfection. My daughter's favorites: pastries and ricotta pancakes, fluffy, moist and milky!

Yelp
We ordered a bombolone, cappuccino, and the frittata. The service was kind but efficient and my cappuccino was smooth and well done. This place is a nice escape from the chaos of the hospital environment.

Humberto R.

Yelp
Custard stuff bomboloni here are really good. Seems like they run out kinda early but definitely recommend.

Yelp
Sandwich shop across Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. Small shop with limited seatings inside but they do have outdoor seatings. Service was quick. I got the Porchetta sandwich and it came with a side of salad. The salad was just salad and came with balsamic vinegar. The sandwich was a bit small. The pork was ok, good flavor but on the drier side. This place is pricy for the amount of food. Was told their donuts were good so might have to go earlier for the sweets and pastries.

Yelp
Met a friend for lunch here. It's located at Stanford University, across the street from the new children's hospital, with lots of free parking for people dining at the restaurant. The outdoor patio is lovely with plenty of seating and umbrellas for shade. Nice setting. I ordered a tuna panino. Loved it, the tuna was creamy, the bread was toasted perfectly, and I loved how slices of hard boiled eggs were layered perfectly on sliced radishes. Best tuna sandwich ever. I usually avoid coffee after noon but I saw a drink on their espresso menu that I didn't recognize (lecesse?)? I asked the cashier and he said that it's 2 shots of espresso over ice plus an almond syrup. I asked for it with a splash of soy milk. Loved it.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the area- and it's about time I write a review and tell people about it!! The food is always delicious, the ambiance is lovely and the staff is always so friendly! Parking: There is ample of parking close by. They even have reserved parking for people who come to eat here or the neighboring restaurant so that's great! Food: We absolutely love the food! Highly recommend the arancini balls (my favorite!) as well as the friend chicken (melts in your mouth!). The arancini balls are absolutely heavenly. They are paired nicely with a simple salad and homemade focaccia bread. The chicken sandwich is to die for, it also just melts in your mouth with each bite. Honestly my husband and I take both dishes and share, or just keep them for our own haha! Ambiance: This place is tucked away in its own spot. You order at the front and then you go and find a spot to sit outside - there's plenty of tables to choose from also some with shade. It's like taking a break from life and enjoying a moment of absolutely pleasure. Staff: The staff is always super friendly and nice. There's always a manager there to oversee things which is always great having someone higher up be present. You can tell the staff is super hard working! One thing to note: this place closes early at 2PM. And usually lunch time is pretty crowded as a lot of staff from Stanford hospital close by come here so make sure to come early! I give this place 5/5 and highly recommend to anyone in the area to come and experience it for themselves.

Yelp
I visited Tootsies at Stanford Barn for the first time with a few coworkers, and it's a charming spot with a cute café vibe. We went close to lunchtime, so the breakfast menu was still available. We decided to share a few baked goods: croissants, a blueberry-lemon muffin, and some kind of donut. All three were quite good, but the standout for me was the croissant. It had a delightful cream filling that took it to the next level--absolutely amazing! For my actual lunch I got the salento sandwich which was pretty good.. The focaccia was soft and it was very flavorful and hearty. My coworker tried a fried zucchini sandwich which looked really good and he gave it a great review. The service was mostly self service but they brought the food out to you and it was fairly quick and efficient! Overall, Tootsies left a great impression, and I'd definitely go back.

Yelp
Came here for lunch today. My wife and I ordered the tootsie burger and the porchetta sandwich w/ a twist. Service is always top notch and the folks here are very friendly. We arrived at 11:27 craving the panini but they stop serving breakfast at 11:00!!!! Bummer. But blessing in disguise I guess. We made the porchetta sandwich a salad (see photo). My wife and I split the meals so I got an amazing salad plus half a cheeseburger with those delicious homemade fries. I must say, I did not feel bloated and everything was very tasty. I would definitely order this again.

Yelp
This is one of the best places to grab a causal lunch on Stanford's campus! You order your food and they bring it to you. You do not have a dedicated server. I ordered the Tootsie's hamburger which was perfectly cooked medium rare and came with Swiss cheese, grilled onions, and sun dried tomatoes with fries. Talk about juicy and delicious! The Spinacio salad was delicious as well and light but filling. The chicken sandwich was dry and not good. The grilled bread was yummy but no mayo or anything on it. It was just dry. Do not recommend. They have seating outside near lavender fields which makes this place super relaxing and dreamy. Would definitely recommend while at Stanford. Very California fresh and lovely vibes!

Yelp
Loved this little piece of heaven...made us feel like we were back in Italy. The setting and service and food were perfect.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place and ending up enjoying the restaurant! First of all, loved the location! You walk into this little area that's next to the other restaurant Vina Enoteca. You feel like you are in another city too! Anyway, the restaurant itself is very cute. A little cozy place with patio seating. It's a great place for anyone, including your most beloved pets! Plenty of parking. Ordered frittata with pancetta and toast with jam. It was delicious! I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed every bite. Also ordered a butter croissant sandwich with ham and cheese paired with salad and oh my goodness the croissant was so soft and delicious! Loved how it still has a little crisp when I bit into it. Lastly, I ordered the donut stuffed with Nutella and it was so freaking good. Best way to end my meal. Service was superb! Definitely check out this spot if you haven't been to yet!

Yelp
Convenient to get food nearby Stanford Hospital. Service was average. Ambiance, inside/outside sitting areas. Order your food first, they'll bring it to your table. You get your own water. No one really checked on us after food were delivered. I love their granola yogurt though. Blueberry Muffin was healthy.

Yelp
Was in the area for work and thought why not try this cute little spot and see if it's actually decent considering its in the Hub of the Stanford hospitals. Short verdict: Very pleasantly surprised. This poached egg in toast is wayyy more flavorful than it looks. The celery and Kalamata olives work great together. There is a perfect amount of salt, pepper, and moisture. The poach egg was perfect and runny just the way I like it! This sugar donut is also fantabulous! They have the options of nutella stuffed, vanilla cream, and plain. I ordered the plain and really enjoyed it, incredible fluffy in the inside! For the poached egg toast+ latte+ donut I paid $22.14. Hunger is satisfied and happy I indulged in a great meal to start the day

Yelp
One of my favorite spots in Palo Alto. I've been coming here for over 10 years and always have a wonderful experience, whether dining in or taking out. The pollone sandwich and tuna panino are my two faves.

Yelp
Wasn't sure if this was open again but yes indeed went for late lunch on Halloween Monday & folks were lunching Al fresco. Salads were absolutely delicious & service was totally on point, fast, friendly. Arancini salad was an unusual combo & absolutely delicious. Prices are very reasonable ( for Palo Alto) Tables outside were kept very clean. Nice roses beside our table & umbrellas avail for shade. Looking forward to returning to try panini & breakfast items.

Yelp
During construction the actual Tootsies building is closed and they are accepting dine-in and takeout orders right next door at Vina Enoteca. It's a bit confusing because the actual Vina Enoteca is closed until dinner and they have their own takeout menu, but if you go to the counter after the pastry display, Toosties has laminated breakfast/lunch menus. The indoor dining area is closed unless you're there for dinner but they have shaded patio tables, and there's some more outdoor seating next to the original Tootsies building as well. Prices are a little on the steep side, but the location is convenient as it's right across from the hospital. While LPCH also has a cafeteria which is cheaper, Tootsies is a great alternative if you are sick of hospital food. I got the Spring Panzanella which was $16.54 after tax and fees. A little high for a salad without protein but very fresh and tasty. I liked how the balsamic dressing was on the side so things didn't get too soggy. Mine was chock full of a variety of tomatoes including my favorite heirloom! The bread pieces were crunchy like croutons. A bit weird, but the online menu lists the panzanella as containing asparagus, arugula, and peas, which mine didn't have. Mine was exclusively tomatoes, green onions, and minced herbs. I didn't mind because I adore tomatoes but some extra variety would've been great. Service was super quick and friendly. My order was out in about 5 minutes. You can also order online to save time but there's a $0.99 service fee. I'd be curious to grab some coffee or breakfast from them next! Of note, the Yelp page currently lists Apple Pay as a non-accepted payment method but as of August 2022, it worked for me! They have a normal Square contactless payment reader that works with Apple Pay :)

Eric A.

Yelp
Way too much salt on the omelets. We're not rabbits in need of a salt lick. The coffee was, however, excellent. The payment screen ask for tips (20 percent, 15 percent, etc.) at the front end, but know that there is ZERO service so it makes one wonder why the cashier is asking for such a high gratuity for simply taking your payment. UPDATE: manager got back to me IMMEDIATELY after reading my review and said that he would ask the cook to tone it down on the salt. That is great news, and excellent customer service. So the part of my review about the armor being salty is probably already obsolete :)

Josh H.

Yelp
Nice place with extremely friendly service and good food. Extremely limited seating indoors but outdoor seating is plentiful and very nice. Ambience is very laid back and quieter.
google avatar

Priscilla R.

Yelp
Looking for a delicious lunch by Stanford? Well, look no more! The arancini salad is delicious! I get it every time. The fried chicken sandwich has also been a favorite. They also have a full service espresso bar and delicious pastries as well. There is limited indoor seating and the outdoor seating is usually full during lunch time so plan accordingly. There's also no place for a group larger than 4 or 5.

Yelp
Discovering Tootsies is like discovering a piece of art, so no coincidence it is housed at the Cantor Arts Center in Palo Alto. Tasty tomato basil soup accompanying a delectable bounty of roasted vegetables and pumpkin seeds found their way to our table. Such an affordable treat for Mom and I on this crisper day at $10 a meal. Then before strolling the land after lunch, we enjoyed some homemade biscotti that cafe staff member named Eva recommended. Tootsies is a lovely welcome to Palo Alto!
google avatar

Lola Z.

Yelp
I heart you too, Tootsies!! From the latte (best latte in town) to their cream filled bombolino and savory offerings and their staff, everything here is awesome.
google avatar

Heying D.

Yelp
They just reopened and it's bad. I had the Arancini salad which was extremely overpriced for what it was. The Arancini balls were pretty big, crunchy but just tasteless. The rice was mush, lots of cheese but not flavor. It literally tasted like nothing. Extremely bland and boring. Not even the salt on the table could add much to it. The arugula salad was too full of parmesan cheese and vinegar. Very overwhelming and not at all balanced. Small bowl with two arancini balls for a total of nearly $17. Pass. Staff was ok, but not friendly or welcoming. Just wanted to get their job done. Never again. Not worth it.
google avatar

Malika K.

Yelp
Such a cozy place, great coffee and service. Interior is the top. The only sad thing that it closes at 3pm
google avatar

Bee S.

Yelp
Tried the tuna panino for the first time. Not ordinary, very delicious. Some radishes, hard-boiled egg slices, capers, arugula on a delicious lightly toasted ciabatta bread. It was quite substantial, couldn't finish it. Also included some lightly dressed salad. I'll order that one again.
google avatar

Sonya B.

Yelp
How did it take me so long to discover this excellent breakfast and lunch spot? Coffee is available in more than one roast and is awesome. They offer a mix of baked goods, including croissants and scones, and heartier items made to order in their kitchen. Lunch offerings include soup, salads, and sandwiches. So far, everything as been delicious. This is a primarily outdoor seating venue, which is what I love most. Its garden-like setting and tasty food options make me feel like I am on vacation.

Clark G.

Yelp
Beautiful food. Pleasant setting with lavender beds. Patio seating. Kind people. Dog friendly.

Jiying Q.

Yelp
Delicious Special salad not on the list, you should ask Sunshine comfortable Located at Stanford

Yelp
Favorite brunch / lunch spot. Really wish they were opened on the weekends. My daughter loves the ricotta pancakes. The side salads are tasty and I also liked the tuna sandwich.
google avatar

Jeff C.

Yelp
got a 1.5 hours wait in between appt by stanford early in the morning. Stroll over here for a quick breakfast in between. The donut/bombolini is good, has the vanilla one, also had nutella flavor. The building is quaint and cute, good to seat outside and wait instead of by the hosptial. Plus they have a big bucket of self serve water outside for anyone, very nice touch.
google avatar

Debbie H.

Yelp
Scrumptious and different salad! I enjoyed the arugula with risotto balls, very tasty. The staff was friendly and we were able to see them making our food. The outdoor seating was ideal.

Jon S.

Yelp
Tootsies is a wonderful lunch spot. Love the location and food, especially the Brussels sprouts salad. My only disappointment was the hot chocolate was no longer special. It used to be a decadent treat made with cream and intense chocolate. It was now made just with regular milk and so-so chocolate. :(
google avatar

Jeanne-Marie A.

Yelp
Went here to grab lunch here recently. Beautiful setting filled with colorful flowers. Parking was easy and service was quick and friendly. Food was decent. The fried chicken sandwich ended up being a little drier/blander than I had hoped, but there was a breaded zucchini sandwich that we also ordered and it was 10/10. I'd return and try something new next time.
google avatar

Yelp
Met up with an old friend in the Palo Alto area and we wanted to grab quick bite to eat, I had remembered being recommended this place so we decided it was worth checking out. Nice and cozy spot with a menu that seems to change regularly based on what they have, the sandwiches all looked so good and the staff were super friendly. I ended up getting the Porchetta sandwich which was absolutely delicious, super juicy, the caramelized onions and the lemon dressing was fantastic. All the elements of the sandwich worked perfectly together and was one of the best cuts of porchetta I have had in the bay area. The side salad left something to be desired, minimal dressing but besides that the meal hit the spot for me. I would definitely recommend Tootsies to anyone who is either looking for a quick bite to eat or a nice café breakfast spot before work. You can't go wrong as they have a wonderful selection of coffee as well that would go great with either a simple breakfast sandwich or one of their pastry options.

Q Q.

Yelp
Food was very simple but good. Small menu. We really wanted to try their lunch menu but we were too early. Lots of parking. Beautiful area. Outdoor seating only I think. I don't recall seeing any tables inside, but I could be wrong. Great service and fast, too. We'll be back for lunch.
google avatar

Micah W.

Yelp
Super good lunch spot on campus ... the sandwiches are to die for .... The porchetta and the copa are both go tos .... Everything on the menus is good

Yelp
I have been dining here since 2010. The best Mocha, pastries and sandwiches. They also have the best burgers and beers as well. Rocco is a great guy and remembers his customers.
google avatar

Sandee L.

Yelp
With a last minute change of plans and also wanting to try something new in PA, we ended up at Tootsie's for brunch. I think the dining options in this particular area cater more to the hospital (staff, patients/family) than the general public. I got the poached eggs with brussels sprouts and my gal pals got the burger and hot coppa. All were very mediocre. This is a fast casual restaurant. The staff was very slow taking our order at the counter, although apologetic. The server who delivered our food was also very confused as to what tables the orders were going to despite the numbers on the table. There's nice outdoor patio seating with a few umbrellas. Indoor seating is also available. I can see Tootsie's being a nice menu change for patients/family, staff of the hospitals due to location, but it's a little out there for anyone else especially for the food just being mediocre.

Maureen C.

Yelp
Their arancini is delicious as are their almond croissants. Would highly recommend going there for lunch.
google avatar

Kristin L.

Yelp
This place is open fyi, having breakfast here right now while waiting for my family member to get sinus surgery at Stanford

Miles C.

Yelp
Used to come here 10+ years ago when we first lived in the Bay Area. We're back again and so happy to see Tootsie's is as good as ever. Really great food and wonderful pastries, and some of the best coffee on the peninsula. Lovely spot to hang out when our kids were little and could scooter around.
google avatar

Teresa C.

Yelp
I came here to pick up breakfast for my boss. The staff is super friendly and very tentative. I got a Nutella croissant for myself. It was so good. I plan on coming back to try more dishes.

Yelp
Yummy breakfast. loved the look of this adorable find. Come try it for yourself. Blue skies, birds chirping, and very peaceful.

Yelp
Delightful in every way. Recommend. Beautiful setting. Sit out in the sun. Great coffee. Delicious pastries. Easy parking.

Yelp
My favorite place to get croissants they Bay Area! They only bake a few and typically run out by mid afternoon. They have told me before that if I call ahead or perhaps the day before they can make a larger batch to order. I'm not sure if this is still true , but apparently they order them frozen directly from a manufacturer in Europe. I've been here for lunch and enjoyed my meals here as well. The latte I had this morning was perfect. On the pricey side, but typical for this area!

Yelp
This is a great place near Stanford to get food. Very cute!

Yelp
I'm still in love with spending a late morning on their patio near the lavender field. Still love the pastries and focaccia. It's a small cafe and many are surprised it's not like Stacks. It's a small cafe and it's quaint. It's not a restaurant.. and it's why I probably prefer it.
