On the recommendation from an Armenian friend, I decided to stop in to check out Torinos during a weekday lunch.
This nondescript shop off Washington in Pasadena has been at the same location for over 50 years, serving up some outstanding homemade Mediterranean-inspired food.
I went with the classic, flagpole item: Garlic Chicken Sandwich ($9.95).
The ladies who welcomed me were very nice, working feverishly to fulfill a large catering order. The shop is small, with about a dozen seats inside.
The sandwich came out fresh in a plastic basket within ten minutes, wrapped up in neat paper. Right away, you notice very simple ingredients: Chicken, Pickles, Tomato and Garlic Spread.
That's all you need for a very tasty sando.
The bread is fantastic. Pressed firm, with a slightly crispy exterior and soft interior, deliciously wrapping the premium ingredients and making each bite delicious. The chicken is great, no frills and no fuss. The star here is the garlic spread. Wow. This is incredible.
In Los Angeles, Zankou Chicken is probably the most well-known restaurant for their chicken wraps, but I have to tell you, this sandwich blows them out of the water. The garlic paste is so good, combined with the sweetness of the pickles and tomatoes, each bite is outstanding. After finishing throw sandwich quickly, you'll be craving more.
Torinos delivers fresh, tasty fare with a simple chalkboard menu of classic items. Next time you are in the Rose City, stop by to experience great food at a very reasonable price at this Southern California institution.
